Greetings from the CoronetGreetings from the CoronetGreetings from the CoronetGreetings from the Coronet Unto the glorious populace of Atenveldt,

A big THANK YOU to everyone for coming out to the 40th Anniversary of the Barony and our Investiture. It was wonderful to see both old and new faces and listen to the stories of how our group started and the changes that

have happened throughout the years.

It has been an amazing couple of weeks since we have assumed our new responsibilities. The Populace of Atenveldt has embraced us warmly and we

feel very honored by all the love and support you have shown us.

Our first Baronial Champions event is approaching quickly. We hope that everyone will join us on October 31st. We promise to wrap up the activities of the day in a timely manner for everyone to have time to enjoy All Hallows

Eve in the manner in which they choose.

If your group wishes to compete for the Best Land in the Barony at Estrella War, bring your period tents and heraldic displays to Baronial Champions or Southern Crusades. We will be judging the most period view when looking through the gate of your camp at both these events. The winner will be awarded the most visible and best location in the Barony. For more details on this competition and competing for the honor of Baronial Champion, see this

issue of the Palm Prints.

We also want to take this opportunity to thank Lord Harry Rudkin for making more lights to fight by and Lord Marcus Finelly Bond and his crew for setting up the lights and generator every Wednesday night. Without your efforts, our

fighter practice would be in the dark.

In closing, remember…

“If you never did you should. These things are fun and fun is GOOD!!”

...Dr. Seuss.

Estrella War looms in the very near future, and all those planning to attend know the importance of land and its location. This year, Their Excellencies will be holding a contest that will give a house, clan, village or group the honor of camping in the best location in the Barony of Atenveldt. This is the

Baronial land nearest to the battle fields and Merchants Row.

At Baronial Champions or at Southern Crusades, Their Excellencies ask that you bring ambience by flying banners, pennants, walls to show your espirit de corp for your group and Barony. You only need to display at one of these events. Their Excellencies and Their Cousins will be judging the best period display as seen from the road passing your gate. An announcement regarding

the winning group will be made at Southern Crusades.

For questions regarding this competition, contact Lord Roland Childeric de Laon at [email protected].

Champions, a HistoryChampions, a HistoryChampions, a HistoryChampions, a History Article adapted from Wikipedia and Historic-UK web sites.

By Ailleann Inghean Fhrangaigh (mka Mariann Holder-Webber)

The Champion of England, according to the Random House Dictionary, is –

a noun, meaning:

A hereditary official at British coronations, representing the

king ( King’s Champion) or the queen (Queen’s Champion),

who is being crowned, and having originally the function of

challenging to mortal combat any person disputing the right

of the sovereign to rule.

The office of Champion is a hereditary office in the UK that apparently dates

back to William the Conqueror. The first Champion was granted to Sir Robert

Marmyon in 1066. Sir John Dymoke (married to an heiress of the Marmyon

family) exercised the office at the Coronation of Richard II. The Dymoke

family of Scrivelsby, Lincolnshire, has continued to hold the office up to the

present day.

Originally it was the champion’s duty to ride, on a white charger, fully clad in

armor, into Westminster Hall during the Coronation Ceremony. There he

threw down his gauntlet and challenged any person who dared to deny the

sovereign’s right to the throne. The Champion was rewarded with a gilt cov-

ered cup, the King or Queen Regnant having first drunk to the Champion

from it. If the Champion’s challenge was accepted by any person (and rumor

has it that once a disguised Jacobite swordsman actually did challenge the

Dymoke of the day to combat the next day in Hyde Park … although this

story is apparently only a rumor), and the Champion fought, and won, he got

as his fee the armor he wore, and the horse he rode (both of which were on

loan).

By the way, the Champion’s armor used for coronations of James I to George

IV still exists and is on display in St. George’s Hall, Windsor Castle.

The words of the challenge used for the Coronation of King George IV were

these:

“If any person, of whatever degree soever, high or low, shall

deny or gainsay our Sovereign Lord George King of the

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Defender of

the Faith, son and next heir unto our Sovereign Lord the last

King deceased, to be the right heir to the imperial Crown of

the realm of Great Britain and Ireland, or that he ought not

to enjoy the same, here is his Champion, who saith that he

lieth, and is a false traitor, being ready in person to combat

with him and in the quarrel will adventure his life against

him on what day soever he shall be appointed.”

At the Coronation of the present Queen, a member of the Dymoke family was present, but he did not throw down a gauntlet or challenge anyone … instead

he had the honor of carrying the Royal Standard in the Coronation procession.

would like to contribute please email the Chronicler at [email protected]

This month’s “Have you ever wondered was submitted by Her Excellency Annalies. Thank you.

Halloween:

The term Halloween, originally spelled Hallowe’en, is shortened from All

Hallows’ Even ("All Hallows' Eve") [eve is an abbreviation of even, an older word for evening. Halloween gets -een as a re-sult of syncopation of even to e'en], from the Old English term eallra hālgena ǃǃǃǃfen meaning "All Hallow' Evening", as it is the eve of "All Hallows’ Day",[10] which is now also known as All Saints’ Day. It was a day of religious festivities in various northern European pagan traditions,[11] until Popes Gregory III and Gregory IV moved the old Christian feast of All Saints’ Day from May 13 (which had itself been the date of a pagan holiday, the Feast of the Lemures) to November 1. In the 9th century, the Church measured the day as starting at sunset, in accor-dance with the Florentine calendar. Although All Saints’ Day is now considered to occur one day after Halloween, the two holi-days were, at that time, celebrated on the same day.

By Bannthegn Alianora da Lysharet

(Originally presented at Barony of Atenveldt’s 40th Anniversary)

Starting with number one because old people are easily confused:

1. Red houppelandes are no longer restricted to the Seneschal/Baron.

This one is mine, you can’t have it, and it wouldn’t fit you anyway.

2. The SCA actually lasted. So did Atenveldt.

3. Living history is now mainstream and people see it as just another hobby like gardening or bowling. They no longer ask if we’re in a

play ---They assume we’re with a Renn Faire.

4. Not only did Ysgithr last, we now have 6 baronies in Atenveldt.

They are all claiming to be the first barony.

5. Being Baron of Atenveldt is a big deal these days. Barons are now elected, and they get to have super cool investitures. No more ring

toss with Baronial coronets.

6. Ironsteed now has white hair and a beard. Small children invariably

assume that he is Santa Claus’ evil twin.

7. Nobody plays clench-a-wench anymore. Our backs and knees can’t

take it.

8. The Crown now seldom holds processions. There are so many

people, I think they’re afraid of being stampeded.

9. Felicia MacChluarain now has a secret identity as an ASU professor.

10. Robert Roundpounder is an electrician who wires swimming pools. Watching other people dig ditches reminds him of his ducal glory

days.

11. Ivan of Navarette changed his name to Ivan du Grae, got a job,

married Kathleen and is now the grandfather of our future overlord.

12. Woodford of Lorien grew up to be an IRS Agent. Really! His secret

plan is to institute a tax credit for trebuchets.

13. The Kingdom of Atenveldt now has several pairs of beautiful crowns. The “ancient and uglies” (The original copper crowns) have

Palm Prints 19 October 2009

been retired.

14. There are now 19 Kingdoms, including one in Europe and one in

Australia. Those old principalities of ours bred like rabbits.

15. There is a barony on Antarctica and 3 branches in South Africa.

Really!

16. The Zagnuts have 8 grown children, 3 grandchildren, two artificial

joints and one pacemaker among them.

17. Joseph the Good and Arthur of Lockhaven were forced to graduate and take jobs, and both of them have been married to one woman each for more than 30 years. (They did get the Zagamar blondes,

though.)

18. Charles of the J.A.Q.s still has some hair.

19. Arthur of Lockehaven has no hair but much beard.

20. Robert is still Blind (Well, mostly anyway) and still wears a kilt. By sheer longevity and refusing higher awards, he has become the

premier armiger of Atenveldt.

21. Lorelei and Care-Cheri still have lots of hair and are still photogenic.

22. Joseph the Good has all his hair, but it’s now white.

23. Rapier combat is not only legal, they even have tournaments and get

awards. It is officially called “swishy-poke”.

24. Deaton, Joseph, Arthur & Poncho still plan to fight. They’ve locked

in a group discount rate on heraldic walkers.

25. Marya isn’t quite so Mad, but she is no longer skinny.

Grandmotherhood suits her.

26. Southwind is no longer printed on Salt River Project’s mimeograph.

27. Not only are the Board of Directors unrelated to each other, none of

them live at Elf Hill.

28. And…as you always dreamed, Atenveldt is once again just the State

of Arizona. Now the Iskies are demanding their own kingdom.

Volunteers are needed for Security, Troll, Waterbearing, Halfling Hall (Youth Activities), and to serve as Town Criers (the ones who let everyone know what and where things are happening!). Homemade soup, sandwiches, snacks, coffee, tea, cider and hot chocolate will be provided for all volunteers while they are on shift. Each time you volunteer, you will receive three raffle tickets that are automatically entered in a Volunteer Raffle for prizes.

COMBAT COOKERY: The time is fast approaching to sharpen your knives, grab your aprons and test your culinary skills in pan to pan combat! The 11th Annual Southern Crusades Combat Cooking Competition registration is now open! Most of the rules will be similar to past competitions. See the Website or the gatebook for more details. For more info, see the Website at http://www.southerncrusades.org.

Site fees have been reduced this year! Adult members who pre-register on ACCEPS will pay only $20 vs. a cost of $25 at the gate. The fee for youth between ages 5-17 is $8. No site fee for youth under 5 years of age. The family cap—available only for those who pre-register on ACCEPS—is $55. (To be eligible for the family cap, all registrants must be current members living at the same physical address and include no more than two adults and any number of their children.) The fee for a day-trip is $15 per day. Non-member surcharge is $3.
