attitude of ‘country-rst', that is a general inclination to think about the country's safety rst, and this at the time of a diculty which calls for shared action, could prove to be detri-mental. These tendencies suggest that forces like nationalism and individualistic approach to prosperity are likely to get more inuential in the post-pandemic era.

At the same time, on the other side of the coin, there are high chances that new world soli-darity would emerge. The foundation is already being created through the shared concern, global cooperation, mutual trust and common interests that are perceptible during this period of gloom. The creation of this solidarity is facilitated by international organisations, social media, and the connected eorts of frontline workers and warriors working from the early morn to the dewy eve to cure the world. Countries around the world are sending med-ical aids to one other to save lives – shades of regionalism have been transcended by the need to save humanity. This emerging solidarity is embellished by the sweat of the scien-tists and researchers, around the globe, risking it all, to discover a vaccine and by the sincere and pure prayers of the global citizens, which ask for deliverance from the darkness of uncertainty to the light of assurance and certainty.

In the potter's quarters of the world, the several nations resembling the distinguished vari-ety of soils are being given the shape of a Universal Mother. As the idol nears its comple-tion, an image of world solidarity emerges that includes the intrinsic fragrance of the all the nation states. The post-pandemic era would be such a transitional phase – the idol in the making. A transition from hard core nationalist feelings resembling various soils, to a global solidarity that would be the realization of the Goddess within.

Essay Topic: Stronger together and a new word for us: Solidarity

Solidarity, to me, is an extensive term that encompasses much more than just togetherness in thought and action. I believe that solidarity involves coming to terms with the fact there is a deep connection between us, human beings. This bond unites us even in the hardest of times, keeping us aware of the struggles of those around us, inspiring us to be seless and care for others, irrespective of their backgrounds and beliefs.

Being a tness enthusiast, I relate the concept of solidarity to a marathon rather than a sprint. People will not choose to stand in solidarity overnight. It will not be easy to over-come our dierences - the biases and prejudices related to caste, creed, “race”, gender, and sexuality. Rather, it will be a slow and steady process that takes eort and the willingness to do what’s right; the willingness to ght for humanity as a whole.

What better time to reect upon one’s actions and beliefs, than this national lockdown that has forced us to stay home for the past few months and continue to do so for the near future?

We now have time galore be it against our will to introspect and actively change the way we look at the world. We are starting to show solidarity in some ways, helping our vulnera-ble elderly neighbors, providing shelter and donating to displaced migrants, and vid-eo-calling our friends and family to take care of their mental health and our own as well. The pandemic has brought about a newfound sense of camaraderie and appreciation of fellow human beings. However, the marathon is not even close to over. There are miles and miles yet to cover, necessitating us to stand together against the many social issues still plaguing the world today.

Amidst this real lockdown, we have seen issues such as racial proling and police brutality with the murder of George Floyd, and xenophobia against people of Chinese or other East

Asian origins because of the coronavirus. However, we are not at a standstill - fortunately, we are still running. A great example of this is how the United States citizens are standing in solidarity and protesting against police brutality and white supremacy. Although racism is far from being eradicated, this is a step in the right direction.

Our generation of youth holds a lot of power, more than we know.

Drawing from the example of the Black Lives Matter protests, the youth of India must come together to condemn and battle social injustices in our country. Spreading awareness on social media is essential, we should actively participate in movements by actively attending rallies and protests, having debates with our friends and relatives, and preventing ourselves from performing selective activism.

As a 14-year-old, I cannot do much neither eradicate the coronavirus nor change the world. However, by penning my thoughts and having an audience to read them, I hope that I can stimulate my fellow youth in bringing about change in our society. Let us stand together in solidarity as humans, and complete this marathon.

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” Mahatma Gandhi

It was March, the month of exams. I was excited for the nals, thereafter being promoted to the next class, new session last-ing few weeks and nally summer vacations. This year we had plans to visit my maternal grandparents in the village far from the hustle-bustle of cities. Likewise, other children certainly had things planned.

However, the world was caught unaware of the rapid spread of COVID-19. To contain it, a nationwide lockdown was declared. My rst reaction was of disappointment as all my plans were shattered. I asked my parents about the possibility of going to our hometown. They patiently helped me understand about the virus, how it spreads, and why lockdown is important. It had a calming eect on me and made me think.

Ultimately, I realized that this time is an opportunity to connect with family members and know what home is, which we sometimes miss in normal circumstances.

Still, the rst day of the lockdown was dull. However, again my parents came to the rescue. They explained that this is the best opportunity to use our reading gift, to experience the joy of it, and learn. The better way to get knowledge in understanding between the right and the wrong.

My father advised me to try writing blogs about places visited, doing sketching and partici-pating in competition by ICCR, UNESCO and other institutions. He always encourages me. My mother involved me in doing yoga and arranging the kitchen, ironing the clothes, pre-paring tea and coee, among other things. They both support each other in doing house-hold chores, and I was the learner. My father said all this will be useful to me throughout life.

After a few weeks of lockdown, school started online classes. I was thrilled to have that experience as I had seen my parents attending online meetings. Now was the opportunity for me to enjoy it. The rst day was full of excitement when I saw my peers online. We exchanged greetings, and the teachers were extremely polite. They probably knew that it would take time for us to adapt. We learned to be tidy and appropriately dressed for these classes also. Every teacher taught us the aim of ‘utilizing this opportunity to learn some-thing new everyday ’, using handouts and worksheets in the absence of books.

B.B King, the famous singer once said, ‘‘The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take away from you”. So, one should never lose an opportunity to learn.

My father often says that the mother is the rst teacher of the child, parents are guides to their children, and teachers shape their future.

During this lockdown, I learned to stay positive and constructive, healthy, and active, atten-tive in class, and respect time and opportunity.

I was also greatly encouraged and motivated by the appreciation I received from UNESCO last April, in response to an article I wrote on the occasion of ‘World Book and Copyright Day’. This motivates me to take a vow to keep learning and writing.

Let me conclude:

“Life is an opportunity; don’t waste it.Tough time would come,

But would go, only if you will;Wash your hands and stay hygienic,

Help yourself and you’ll avoid the pills.Learn what you see,

Learn what you experienceLearn from parents and teachers,

Learn from friends and elders.Life is an opportunity; don’t waste it.”

Essay Topic: Not everything we nd online is true!

Ever since the beginning of the industrial revolution in the nineteenth century, information has gained much importance. Methods of keeping records and accounts were developed along with signicant changes in the international schooling system. These methods have reached an incredible amount of sophistication over the decades. The human race now faces a pivotal point in its history, the information revolution.

News and social media now trump perhaps every aspect of our lives. Information, ranging from simple cooking tutorials on YouTube to large scale political aairs, has found its way to billions of people worldwide. Unfortunately, with the onset of this ‘Information Age’ there have been several changes for the worse.

Instead of extensive political regimes and dictatorships of the previous centuries, we are now under the inuence of the press and media. This leaves room for a large amount of bias, misinformation, and fake news to circulate freely. Not only can the heads of large news companies interweave their personal biases into the mainstream media, but politi-cians and large corporations may also attain full control through corruption.

It has been widely theorized that information will become the most important asset short-ly. Our thoughts will be inuenced by information and, subsequently, our actions. In the twenty-rst century, whoever controls information controls the world.

In the Cambridge Analytica data scandal, a British company managed to attain detailed data of millions of people on Facebook, making it one of the biggest breaches to human privacy in history. This data was then used in political ad campaigns to allegedly cause a negative impact on the US presidential elections in 2016. Likewise, in the Pizza Gate inci-dent of 2016, a man shot a rie in a pizza place after hearing a conspiracy theory that Hillary Clinton was running a human tracking ring out of the restaurant.

Page 8: Pan India Online Essay Contest 2020 · Pan India Online Essay Contest 2020 In the quaint potter's colony of Bengal, after the monsoon, a Goddess rises from the clay, molded by human

How, then, can we prevent ourselves from being sucked into the void of misinformation? First and foremost, public awareness campaigns need to be scaled to a global level since it is the collective power of the people that can take the most signicant stride against fake news. Next, an overarching agency under the aegis of the United Nations needs to be established to protect the data of citizens around the globe and to provide transparency (while maintaining strict privacy of individuals) in how world governments handle data and whether it retains the right to privacy of each individual. On a slightly more micro-scopic level, third party fact-checkers, employees of Checkpoint Tipline, and more need to be correctly checked, so no fake news is allowed to seep through to the general masses.

In conclusion, fake news and misinformation should be curbed. Only then will society prosper on various fronts.

COVID-19, an unprecedented crisis with catastrophic impact on both livelihoods and lives of folks across the globe, blow for the world economy and has made seven million people its prey until date. However, it has beneted nature and its resources in ways no devised mechanisms ever could. Images

of the crystalline waters of the Ganges were oating on social media. The endangered Dol-phin was seen roaming in the uncontaminated river waters. The quality of Yamuna has ameliorated. This is suggestive of our contribution to dirtying our water bodies by forcing euents into them. The skies are brighter than ever; they have changed shades from grey to cobalt. Pollution levels have dropped signicantly, and CO2 emissions have attained levels last seen in 2006. They have dipped by 26% in India. Mount Everest being visible from Bihar is a testimony to those above. All of this combined is a true depiction of the saying, “Every cloud has a silver lining.”

As we advance back to normalcy and free economic activity resumes, this environmental recovery may fade away. Economic growth is vital to pull people out of poverty and bestow them to position themselves better. The question here is about making a transition to sus-tainable economic growth. Instead of just running after numeric targets of growth, let us also make sure we are not depriving ourselves, and future generations of a good quality of life. The pandemic has provided a window to realize our capacity to conserve our resources and save our planet. If we all religiously abide by the Sanskrit phrase “Vasudhaiva Kutum-bakam” literally translating to the world is one family, we can surely stitch up the wounds of mother earth gradually.

Recent apocalyptic incidents like the forest res in Uttarakhand and the early arrival of the locust swarms and their attack after that have all been attributed to climate change. Since

Essay Topic: Do you think that the COVID-19 pan-demic will force us to redene the quest for a better use of our natural resources? Will there be a before and an after for environmental issues? If so how?

Page 10: Pan India Online Essay Contest 2020 · Pan India Online Essay Contest 2020 In the quaint potter's colony of Bengal, after the monsoon, a Goddess rises from the clay, molded by human

only three months of behaving considerately cannot help us, avert the years of degrada-tion. All of this is hinting towards the need to wage war against climate change and is call-ing for a new normal. Tracing the post-recession times for observing the trends, there was an explosive rebound in the carbon footprint. This unfurling environmental emergency will endanger our survival. Mr. Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has rightly said, “The current crisis is an unprecedented wake-up call. We need to turn the recov-ery into a real opportunity to do things right for the future.”

During the lockdown, we have all managed to curtail our recreational desires and unneces-sary travels, and with that our spending, have cut down and life is still going on. We have found alternatives for leisure at home and discovered real essence of life, which we had forgotten amidst our everyday hustle-bustle. This trying time has not only made us frugal but has also taught us that lesser mobility can enable the planet to regenerate.

It can be a good tiding for the wildlife too if we grab this chance and contemplate on the fronts of illegal wildlife trade and consumerism, it can go a long way in bringing tracking of wild animals to a close.

Economists are proposing ‘Degrowth’, meaning a society, which aims at the well-being of all and sustains the natural basis of life. It is a plausible new direction for us, where people will use fewer natural resources, organize, and live dierently from the present day. There are attempts to prepare such a model. Will it come to play any soon? I choose to be optimistic in this regard. We must use this crucial juncture to bring in structural reforms, build a sturdy tomorrow for electricity, and swiftly swinging to renewable energy.

This pandemic has reiterated the importance of global solidarity in containing the spread of viruses, not just SARS-CoV-2 but also our actions leading to ecological dwindling. “Timeless truths are always timely,” and it is high time we absorb the cues that we are receiving. I hope that we paint our recovery packages green and do our bit to dierentiate our then from now.

Essay Topic: What will be the role of young peoplein addressing the crisis caused by the pandemic and related issues, such as new balances in power, raising inequalities and reduced employment opportunities?

Where the world is facing pandemic due to the spread of the novel Coronavirus, there has been a signicant change in domestic households. Earlier, where men were the bread-earners and women were the housemakers, the lock-down has brought equity in terms of shared household

chores. The present situation suggests that an improved model has been introduced in human lives. The notion of sharing is caring makes sense and is turning into reality.

However, on the contrary, this has created a lot of problems. It is indeed implied that misery does not demand pity, but it requests acknowledgement. The problem here is the dark side of the global pandemic that one can ever think of, especially in the areas least discussed. The concept of patriarchy has corroborated as the principal explanation behind male behavior. Although role-playing has been an important aspect of human families, there is a stereotyped man having a pre-decided role in the name of patriarch.

On the one hand, there can be witnessed shared household chores by the spouses. In con-trast, on the other hand, the contagious virus has raised worldwide sexual orientation bru-tality, considerably increasing domestic violence cases. The dilemma pertains to the increased paces of private accomplice savagery during the pandemic. A woman, being curbed within the state of internalized lockdown that is more emotional, economical, and psychological than physical, has transgressed the liberty, which was at its peak from the past few decades. The ultimate repercussion is that they are forced to suer silently, left with no hope.

Moreover, where there lies an altogether dierent ideal in the name of working women, then why not the same to be followed in cases of men? It can be divided proportionately

Page 12: Pan India Online Essay Contest 2020 · Pan India Online Essay Contest 2020 In the quaint potter's colony of Bengal, after the monsoon, a Goddess rises from the clay, molded by human

to the extent that the other spouse does not face brutality. For a ritual, rather than the term practice, to display long-lasting consequences, the stereotype has to be eradicated to an extent that it never remains a matter of discussion in any part of the world. The situation turns graver after the abuse as the victims suer both short-term and long-term psycholog-ical eects, namely depression, anxiety, panic attacks and post-traumatic stress disorder. For others, this might be just chaos within the human mind, but in psychological terms, this requires counselling, which is not an option during lockdown. Meanwhile, where the United Nations Chief, Antonio Guterres is urging the governments of the nations for mea-sures to stop the ‘ceasere’ amid of the ‘horrifying global surge in the domestic violence’ during this global pandemic, we, as the general public, can possibly gain ground in fore-stalling savagery against women.

Hence, it is conclusive that while a few men are a piece of the issue, all men are a piece of the arrangement. It is at this moment also suggested; the immediate solution is to work with men rather than women. Raising the bar for men is essential in making them realize their harsh attitudes and encroachment in women’s dignity and modesty. Whereby having an outer approach, it might seem to others that the husband-wife relationship is progres-sive, but in practicality, the tendency of men to show ignorance is questionable. The dire need is of pulling out the tree, namely the stereotyped mindset, rather than cutting it. For a better future, we need a pleasant present and that is only possible when the household sharing persists as if lockdown never happened. Humans have evolved since time imme-morial, and not this lockdown can become an end for the concept of the evil patriarch, lead-ing to the emergence of a more civilized future generation.

Essay Topic: What will be the role of young peoplein addressing the crisis caused by the pandemic and related issues, such as new balances in power, raising inequalities and reduced employment opportunities?

“The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.” -Nelson Mandela

The COVID-19 pandemic has aected people from all walks of life else ways. Every country, including India, is taking all pos-sible steps to confront this pandemic. Who thought that a

virus would make us locked up in our own homes for months? Majorly people have resort-ed to technology, they have started working from home; educational institutions have begun conducting online classes, the courts have started virtual hearings, etc. The role of youth in combating coronavirus is crucial. India had already been facing several challenges such as unemployment, mob-lynching, overburdened judiciary, and so on. The responsi-bility of youth has even enhanced in reshaping the future of the country post-pandemic.

This pandemic has brought with it several signicant challenges. Apart from reviving the economy, another dominant challenge before India is an ‘infodemic.’ It is not merely prof-fering us false information but is severely aecting our choices and thereby posing certain-ly a big threat to our democracy because people shape their opinion based on fake news. All the social media platforms today are lled up with furphy, hoax content, and rumors. For instance, a widely circulated fake video of a Muslim vendor’s unhygienic handling of fruits falsely linked with spreading coronavirus. All these aairs disturb the communal har-mony in the country hence must be dissuaded. Therefore, the youth is required to be dili-gent in relying on any such information and must- read from the authenticated sources and inform others in their circle timely.

The pandemic has shown the mirror to us regarding the rising inequality; we have seen hundreds of thousands of starving migrant laborers walking barefoot hundreds of miles struggling to reach their homes and some even losing their lives. The underprivileged of the country has suered the most from the pandemic and this gap between rich and poor

Page 14: Pan India Online Essay Contest 2020 · Pan India Online Essay Contest 2020 In the quaint potter's colony of Bengal, after the monsoon, a Goddess rises from the clay, molded by human

is rising drastically. The youth is responsible for the overall development of a nation, and by the active participation of youth in policy formulation and decision-making, this gap can be reduced.

Unemployment is at its peak in recent times. Woefully, many people have lost their jobs on account of this pandemic. Thus, this problem can majorly be countered only by stimulating innovative and skill development programs amongst people. Further, instead of seeking jobs, the youth of the country should be encouraged to become head hunters.

As per statistics, more than half of the Indian population is less than 25 years of age; howev-er, its staggering that the participation of youth in policymaking is very nominal, which must be changed for the country’s growth.

Further, I believe that as most of the persons are at home right now, it is an excellent oppor-tunity for us to follow our passion and brush up the skills.

As Mr. Yuval Noah Harari says “This storm will pass. But the choices we make now could change our lives for years to come”. Thus, the government must introspect their policies and focus on real issues like food (given that the latest rank of India in Hunger Index is nega-tive), health, and proper education to all, further the youth has a great role to play in achiev-ing these goals and bringing in the change.

Let us be positive and take this pandemic as an opportunity to learn and educate ourselves and set our priorities accordingly.

Inventions and discoveries are the languages of science and foresight, and when one speaks of them, the 21st century immediately comes to mind. We, on earth, think of the cosmos as an immensity embodying everything we know and much that we cannot imagine. For millennia, we have

endeavored to make sense of what we observe. We have examined, evaluated, and conjec-tured, trying to articulate a justication for a mystery whose pieces are slowly being disclosed with every scientic breakthrough.

The 21st century is making the miracles of science easy to understand for the doubtful and evident for the rest. From 1999 everything started to snowball in the fantastic realism, with the GPS for the phones, Facebook in 2004, the Articial Intelligence accessible even where we least anticipate it, to name a few. Animals migrating and breeding, tides rising and falling, plants blooming, and from early on, we have witnessed the correlation of these epi-sodes with the planetary movements. We assembled our understanding of existence with the connection between biology and astronomy, which led us to the Moon and to launch the Mangalyaan to study the Mars- The Mars Orbiter Mission.

Though, as usual, the fact that the impediments are errant, inconspicuous, and certain evoked no glance from us, which caused one of the most disastrous pandemics of all the times: The COVID-19. It hit us arduously and chocked the very existence of humankind. It originated as a point and ended wrapping up the entire globe in itself. We, as humans, do not have any prociency that allows us to foresee. Still, we have indestructible permanent gift of learning and thus, for anyone who has pondered the relativity of the prevailing situ-ation with the parallel ones in history has understood that today is embarrassingly a frac-tion of the recurrences of our negligence. All the times that we made any headway, there came hindrances and unpredictability at the pinnacles.

Essay Topic: The 21st century, with all its science and technology, allows us to go to Mars and develop Arti-cial Intelligence. Yet, one virus brings us to a com-plete standstill in a few weeks? Do you think there should be changes in priorities for science and research in future?

Page 16: Pan India Online Essay Contest 2020 · Pan India Online Essay Contest 2020 In the quaint potter's colony of Bengal, after the monsoon, a Goddess rises from the clay, molded by human

If we look deep in our advancement’s chronology, we will undoubtedly end up having a multitude of answers for our problems today and steer ourselves towards their solutions. Although, we have a defence mechanism, provided by science and technology, we usually have banged our heads against the wall, all thanks to no prioritizing.

The past, however, cannot be xed, but the present can be amended for the future. We are combating the diminutive spherical virus today, to ensure our future for exploring the spherical Mars tomorrow. Medical is unquestionably been associated with physics, geology and so on, the future perspective and that if it suggests any probability of any slight disrup-tions in any nonmedical elds. This is one of the best examples of how too much for good, but without prioritization can ruin everything. The brightest minds were always born with ideologies and a subtle sense of prioritization. Unbeknownst to the world now, the future of science has to be well intertwined with the prospect of priorities. Such is the requisite felt now when our shortcoming is eating us up.

Moreover, the point in prioritizing is too powerful. An analysis of our link of the personal priorities can deliver insights into what priorities indeed might be. Abandoning one eld of science or choosing the other is not prioritizing. The spirit of science is made up of many aspects, and leaving even one can create a huge void, unsettling the whole balance. Each facet is equally important at the same time.

We need convergence of the priorities. Crises are inevitable, but can surely, with a rap-prochement of priorities, tackle them better in the future. For that, we need to allow the full spectrum of sciences to ow, for science and its priorities are time-based. Only the intima-tions by time can dictate the prerogatives. When considering the characteristics of the time, it would be a blunder to assume that it would necessarily possess the attributes commonly associated with benets. So even the priorities are unpredictable, yet need not be changed without time’s warning, which makes rapprochement the centre of science. Thus, we need to achieve the harmonization of priorities in science.

Essay Topic: Science And Health – What Should We Change To Be More Resilient?

“We are not prepared for the next outbreak” - Bill Gates, 2015

No more lives have ever been claimed by wars, tsunamis, earthquakes, or oods than by an enemy, so familiar, as epide-miologists would have it. Its existence spans a few nanometers

in structure but a presence that knows no bounds- nationality, ethnicity, economic or social strata. The pandemic, which was declared on March 11, 2020, very plainly retells the tale of fragility of the most dominant species on this planet.

Humans have put the pandemics of the past behind with surges in science and global technology. Ironically, the growth of humanity has made itself vulnerable to more unique challenges leading to newer questions about public health. The rise in population and con-nectivity very logically increases transmission. Medical breakthroughs are evident in favor-able trends in life expectancy and mortality. However, are human beings channelizing the scope of its advances proactively to prepare for the anticipated yet unforeseen?

The quote above by one of the greatest think tanks, Bill Gates, resonates with these con-cerns. It directs the spotlight on the aicting questions on the role of science and health.

COVID-19 has and continues to claim lives by the minute multilaterally. It has deeply dented the socio-economic resilience of the people. This enemy does not distinguish polit-ical barriers, and neither should our response. The research in the eld of developing vac-cines needs prioritization beyond the control of nationalities and markets, which has driven pharmaceutical giants' incentives.

Governments, private companies, philanthropists should come together. It should be con-sidered as an investment against the economic aftermath. It is not alarmist; it is somewhat proactive. It should be collaborative, not competitive.

A very crucial science and health challenge is building up an essential literacy for funda-mental health etiquette. People are relevant stakeholders to atten the transmission curve. School curriculum inclusive of health literacy fundamentals will be an empowering methodology, especially in developing nations, to build a healthier and resilient commu-nity. The aftermath of isolation and trauma amongst sects of the society will also need help in the Year 1 AC.

The current times have demonstrated that the fragile connections, are broken, and the ones who have promised, are stronger. It is imperative to evolve promising trends in medi-cine, facilitated by articial intelligence (AI). Community-level of tracking outbreaks and infections, transparent global dashboards, and digitally powered ways of tele-consulting individuals are redening sustainability in our digital biosphere.

The frontrunners of this biological warfare are undisputed, the medical health care work-ers. And with an enemy so discreet and omnipresence, their professional hazard assumes unimaginable magnitude. The shortages of masks, personal protective equipment, and extreme conditions have severely impacted them.

We need scientic research for solutions to diminish the professional hazard, which comes with such emergencies. It may include research in the eld of protective gear, role deni-tion of dierent stakeholders in the system to make it stronger, or creating an army of spe-cialists from many disciplines to meet whatever crisis or epidemic might arise.

“Look for causes, not villains,” states Hans Rosling. Human beings have surpassed catastro-phes and moved ahead with their ability to learn from their mistakes. Looking for causes and technically addressing them is the change we need. We have constantly been chang-ing, and changing further remains the key.

We will eventually put this pandemic behind us, but for now, in the words of Dr.Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General, WHO, “We see light at the end of the corona tunnel. It is the rst pandemic that can be controlled.”
