    Charles Town Family and Friends,

Well, the time has come. The last month of school, the last newsletter, and the last hurrah at CTMS for

the 2011-2012 school year! We're all looking forward to lazy days by the pool and sleeping in, but we've

got just a little while longer until we can truly bask in the glory of summer vacation. Until then, we'll be

busy preparing for the Westest, which begins the week of May 14th! Last minute review and

preparations are taking place in all classrooms and students and teachers are wrapping up end-of-year

projects and units. You can feel the impending break in our halls, but the students have been doing a

fantastic job maintaining focus and drive. The end of the year is always a busy time for students, staff,

and families. What follows is just a brief look at what's to come in this-- our last month-- of the school

    year.

Westest will begin on May 14th. Students will be testing for the majority of that week in their fourth

period classes. Students will spend the morning in testing sessions and rotate classes in the afternoon.

We do ask that our teachers not load the students with work during this time so that they may focus on

the tests. On the home front, we ask that you ensure that students maintain a healthy diet (healthy

food makes for a healthy intellect!) and get plenty of rest so that they can be prepared on the testing

days. Of course, attendance during this time is of primary importance. While make-up sessions are

offered to those who are forced to miss, it is preferable to take the test on the testing day. Students will

be tested in four key subjects: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Each test

occurs on a different day. Students will only be taking one test per day, however, these tests take

several hours to complete so it is important that students are mentally prepared. We have supreme

confidence that our students this year will continue CTMS' tradition of excellence! The Writing

Assessment that took place several months ago is a component of the Language Arts Westest score,

comprising approximately 33% of that particular score. All other test scores are based solely on the

testing that will take place the week of the 14th.

The Farewell Dance has been scheduled for May 19th from 6:00pm - 8:30pm here at CTMS. The dance

is being sponsored this year by our Band Boosters. All students and staff are invited to attend! Break

out your warm weather attire because the theme is: Luau!! We're turning CTMS into a tropical

paradise! The track season will be wrapping up soon as well, so be sure to catch some of our best track

stars in action during the coming weeks.

While we have one month of school left, that only includes less than twenty school days. We're primed

to wrap-up another great year at CTMS and finish on a high note as we send off our 8th graders to thebig leagues of high school and usher our 6th and 7th graders into their new stations here at home. Have

a great summer everyone and thanks for an amazing year!

    6th Grade Gold Language Arts

Students on the sixth grade Gold team are currently reading a variety of novels

which include the following:Summer of the Swans, Last Summer with Maizon,Among

the Hidden, Dark Life, The Hunger Games, and Hatchet. Various themes among thebooks include many different topics such as: friendship, family, self-esteem, death,

physical disabilities, population control, and social classes.

Please do not forget to continue reading over the summer. It develops vocabulary

and comprehension skills and can take you to places you have never been before.

    Social Studies and Science

In Social Studies we are working our way through the World Wars. I plan on having

the students do a report on one aspect of either war. Also we are touching on map

skills and economics before the Westest.

Science is all about review. We are breezing past the human skeletal and muscular

systems. The next nice day we will be doing a plant lab outside and I still want to do

    acids and bases.

MathOur class will soon be studying the mathematics of home design in a unit called From

the Ground Up: Modeling, Measuring, and Constructing Houses. During this project,

students will become apprentice architects. They will use geometry and measureto design and construct a model home and then estimate the cost of building an

    actual-size version.

School Entry ImmunizationRequirements for 7th Graders

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

Vaccines save lives and protect our children. When young children are about to enter Pre-K andkindergarten for the first time, parents have to make sure that their child is up to date on their shots.

However, young children are not the only ones that need shots.

Starting with the 2012-2013 school year, students entering 7th grade will have shot requirements. Theserequirements must be met before they can start school. Children that are current with their adolescent shots

may have already met the new requirements, however many have not. Before the beginning of the 2012-

2013 school year, students entering 7th

grade must show proof of a booster dose of Tdap vaccine, which

protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) and a dose of the meningococcalvaccine.

Although Tdap and meningococcal shots are required for entry into seventh grade, they are recommended

by the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices

(ACIP) for adolescents beginning at age 11. Parents are encouraged to have their children immunized afterthey turn 11, rather than wait until right before the start of 7th grade to ensure that they are fully protected

from these vaccine-preventable diseases throughout their adolescence. Seasonal influenza and the HPV

vaccine are also recommended, although not required for adolescents.Vaccines are one of the most cost-effective preventive measures available and have saved countless lives.

The new adolescent immunization requirements will not only lengthen the time for which immunized

students are protected from vaccine-preventable diseases, but will also lower their chances of passingdiseases to the elderly, children and infants, classmates with weakened immune systems, and others.

Immunizations help keep adolescents healthy and prevent problems as they grow older.Take your child to their health care provider for a routine adolescent check-up to determin e if your childs

shots are current and to meet the 2012-2013 school entry requirements. Children who are found to be

missing shots can receive them during that visit. Children without a family doctor or health care providermay visit a local provider or the Health Department.
