    CTMS Parents, Students, and Staff,

We find ourselves right in the midst of Old Man Winters

wrath lately at CTMS. The blustery temperatures have been punishing. However, were happy to report, our studentsand staff are braving the cold like troopers and continuing to work hard in their classes! This has been perhaps ourbusiest time so far this year. The students are busy, the staff is busy, and the days have been flying by as we head intothe fourth and last marking period . Its hard to believe weve almost reached the end of another school year, but whenyou keep as busy as the Panthers, time flies!

Our students days have been full of activities and events for the past month. Eighth grad ers have participated in theNAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress). This test does not affect the participants academic records, butrather allows for a snapshot of academic progress on a state and national level. Eighth grade students have also beenable to take advantage of the Career Van over the past several weeks. Students are given approximately 90 minutes to

take part in this activity that offers them a firsthand hands-on look at a profession they are interested in pursuing.Careers in the culinary arts, computer science, and design as well as many others are represented. The CTMS Links forDiversity club recently visited Willow Tree nursing home to visit with residents and distribute Valentines. Their visit waswelcomed and lauded by the staff and patients. In celebration of Valentines Day, w e recently held a PTSO-sponsoredValentines Day dance for our students . Students received a discount on tickets if they brought a canned food item toadd to the FFAs collection as part of FFA week. W ed like to give a special shout -out to our PTSO for providingchaperones and food and drink to the attendees! Were lucky to have such a dedicated group of parents to support our students!

Our biggest event for the month of February at CTMS was the aforementioned FFA week, which CTMS celebrated aspart of National FFA week. Coinciding with George Washingtons birthday as always FFA week brought a great dealof spirit and activity to our campus. The FFA sponsored a staff breakfast on our IS day, serving homemade hot dishesalong with coffee and juice . Theyve been busy organizing and sponsoring a school-wide canned food drive, collectingover 400 cans! Mr. Pinhei ros Learning Skills class won the school contest with 105 cans!! Wed like to extendcongratulations to Mr. P and his students for their hard work at supporting such an important cause! In addition tocharitable activities, there was fun to be had as well with a week full of spirit days such as Farmer Day and JerseyDay as well as a school-wide corn hole competition with seventh graders Mason Kidwell and Dawson Cox finishing in

The saws were roaring and the sawdust was flying this past Saturd ay as the Charles Town Middle FFA kicked off National FFA Week. The ch apter enlisted the help of members, pa rents, and community volunteers in order tobuild 20 picnic tables to be donated to the Jefferson County Fair. The members really wanted to give back to

the fair in some way since many of them have benefited from it year after year. Community volunteers, BillFriend, Kyle Friend, and Tony Heflin spent the day at Charles Town Middle on Friday sawing a lot of the lumberto help the chapter get started early on Saturday. Nine members, 3 parents, 7 community volunteers, studentteacher Katlin Thorsell, and Mrs. Friend were all in attendance on Saturday. The crew worked from 8am to 3pmto get the job done.

The CTMS FFA Would like to thank the following Community Volunteers for their generosity:

Bill Nicewarner, Marcy Nicewarner, Michael Ring, Roy Dodson, John Ballenger, Eric Thorsell, Kyle Friend, BillFriend, Scott Friend, Bob Gruber . Community members donated their time and energy to help make this dreama reality. The tables donated to the Jefferson County Fair Grounds and will be used within our community for

    many years to come.

After the completion of constructing 20 picnic tables for the Jefferson county fairgrounds the CTMS FFA chaptercontinued in another honorable community service activity. They collected canned food and non-perishablefood items for Jefferson Community Ministries from a first period class completion. The class that brought inthe most items was Mr. Pinheiros first period class. They brought in a total of 105 cans for the food bank! Theywill be awarded with a yogurt parfait making demonstration. The chapter officers will teach the class how tomake them and the students will get to eat a healthy snack.

To jump start the teachers work week the FFA made a scrumptious breakfast that was eloquently displayed forthe faculty and staff at Charles Town Middle School. They hand made a dairy cow mascot from milk cartons, forthe breakfast center piece. The CTMS FFA members impressed the faculty with their cordial greetings, courteous service and earnest exit biddings. We thank the active FFA participants and community volunteersfor the wonderful breakfast: Marcy Nicewarner, Bill Nicewarner, Katlin Thorsell, Student Teacher, MaKenzieRing, McKayla Dodson, Kaylee Ruffner, Spencer Dailey, Lindsay Heflin and of course Kristin Friend!

On Tuesday, students and staff beamed in Blue and Gold for FFA Spirit Day. Wednesday the students proudlydisplayed an ensemble of camouflage. Thursday was favorite sports jersey (cow) day. On Friday, flannel andfarm attire paraded down the hallways. Meanwhile, behind the scenes a school wide corn-hole competitiontook place in the gym. Two students from each first period were chosen to compete for their class. The corn-hole champions of Charles Town Middle are Mason Kidwell and Dawson Cox. For the FFA Friday finale, the 5 th period Vocational Agriculture class had planted radishes in the CTMS greenhouse last fall, and then harvestedthem to be served on the cafeteria salad bar. FFA week is always a seemingly endless enlightening event atCharles Town Middle.

    Rehberg-7 th Grade Science

For the past couple of weeks in science we have been learning about ecosystems and organismpopulations. Specifically we have discussed limiting factors, adaptations, and evolution.

Students worked on a project in which they designed their own organism. They had to tellabout the ecosystem it lived in, 3 adaptations it had, a symbiotic relationship it had, the needs

of the organism, and also had to draw and label it. The past couple days we have talked alittle about how chemicals and pollution can affect an ecosystem. Students explored part of the EPA website and found a polluted site in West Virginia to research. They told the class

how the site became polluted, what chemicals are the main contaminants and how the site isbeing cleaned up. Next, we will move into constructing dichotomous keys and then into body

systems. Good luck to all participants in the County Science Fair on March 2! You will dogreat!
