OSU Working Papers in Linguistics# 27
Preface
The six papers in this volume deal with various phonological and
morphological issues from a diachronic or philological perspective.
Wallace's contribution (to appear in Die Sprache) is an evaluation
of the philological evidence for the development of PIE mid-palatal
vowels in Palaic. Churma proposes a new account of the diachronic develop-
ment and synchronic description of tone alternations in the Etsako verb
system. In his first contribution, Green applies phonological naturalness
as a criterion for evaluating a proposed reconstruction of the PIE
stop system; in his second paper (his 1982 OSU M.A. thesis), he discusses
the implications of Tocharian palatal alternations for the theory of
phonology. In her contribution (her 1977 OSU M.A.thesis), Hazelkorn
reconstructs a set of deictic particles for Proto-Finno-Ugric and discusses
their development as a heterogeneous class of granunatical morphemes
in the attested Finno-Ugric languages, Stump's survey (a seminar paper written in 1978) classifies the comparative evidence for a postulated
'drift' in modern Indic morphology.
