Tapeworms (Dipylidium)
• Transmission:
Intermediate host –common flea
From eating rodents/rabbits with tapeworm, eating fleas
• Symptoms:
Flea problems
Diarrhea/weight loss
Scooting on floor
Form segments called proglottids that shed as tapeworm grows
Proglottids look like rice in feces
Tapeworms (Dipylidium)
Whipworm (Trichuns vulpis)
• Transmission:From eating contaminated soil, food or water
Eggs survive in soil for many years
Hard to control
• Symptoms:Anemia
Weight loss/bloody diarrhea
Poor coat appearance
Get name from adult shape – thin at one end/thick at the other, much like a whip and handle
Whipworm (Trichuns vulpis)
Roundworm (Ascarids)
• Transmission:
Ingesting rodents or contaminated soil
Passing eggs through placenta or milk to young
• Symptoms:
Swollen abdomen
Diarrhea/vomiting/ weight loss
Poor haircoat
May appear in feces – long, skinny spaghetti
Most common intestinal parasite
Eggs can invade lungs and intestines
Roundworm (Ascarids)
Hookworms (Ancylostoma)
• Transmission:
From eating contaminated soil
Eggs may penetrate through pads/skin
Puppies can acquire through nursing
• Symptoms:
Diarrhea/Vomiting
Weight loss
Poor coat appearance
