Parenting Styles
Parenting Styles
• …The way that a parent consistently interacts with children• Results from everything that influences a
person’s ideas about raising children
1. Authoritarian (Brickwall)
• Characterized by strict discipline imposed by parents• Children’s behaviour is managed through
rewards & punishment• Rules are much more rigid & children are
expected to follow them closely
Authoritarian
• Children raised with this style of parenting may feel rejected by their parents; often have problems both socially & emotionally due to lack of flexibility •When physical punishment turns to abuse,
children suffer emotional consequences• High-risk group for sexual promiscuity,
drug abuse & suicide
2. Permissive (Jellyfish)
• Characterized by few rules & little parental control or guidance of children’s behaviour• Children control the family• Permissive parents often overindulge their
children• Guidelines or rules seldom exist
Permissive
• Children raised with this style of parenting tend to be impulsive, irresponsible, & immature in their behaviour; they have not been taught to consider how their actions affect others• High-risk group for sexual promiscuity,
drug abuse, & suicide
3. Authoritative (Backbone)
• Characterized by warmth, support, acceptance, & indirect positive control & guidance of children’s behaviour• Guidelines are in place to help children
learn to live in society• Guidelines are flexible to adapt to different
situations
