Parents’ Bulletin No 3 December 2014

Christmas Message  

“Peace be with you! Do not be afraid! There is nothing God cannot do!”  These three sentences have formed the message of school assemblies during Advent. The words may be familiar to many of you. These are words that the Angel Gabriel spoke to Mary as she was asked to become the mother of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Very o en huge things are asked or demanded of us and some mes it’s difficult to know how to respond or where to even begin.   

Christmas is a very stressful  me for many families and it should be a  me of great joy. When things get overwhelming, remember the words of the Angel to Mary and trust in them and recall them o en.  

This shall be my last Christmas message for our bulle n so I am really relying upon these words too, trus ng in them every day as I move on to pastures new leaving the wonderful community of English Martyrs this Christmas, but I believe only physically as nobody ever really leaves English Martyrs. It will always remain a special place in my heart.  May this Christmas be a special, blessed and beau ful  me with those you love the most, but re-member to spend  me with the One who it is all about, without whom, we wouldn’t have it! May Christ be born anew in you this Christmas. Peace be with you, do not be afraid, there is nothing God cannot do!

Headteacher’s Message  

I would like to wish all parents and students a Happy and Holy Christmas and I would like to thank everybody for their support during the last term.  As ever, it has proved to be a very busy term and I have been delighted with the enthusiasm shown by our students for the many ac vi es in which they have taken part.  We have faced some challenges this term and the death of Rhys Hewi  was something which had an impact upon the whole school community.  I would like to thank every-body for the way in which they rallied round and supported the school and Rhys’ family during what was a very difficult  me.  

2015 will be my last year as Headteacher of The English Martyrs School and Sixth Form  College since I have informed Governors of my inten on to re re at the end of the Summer term.  There is s ll a lot of work to do before that  me and I can assure parents that I have no inten on of winding down.  Towards the end of the year I will share reflec ons of my 38 years at English Martyrs which have been happy and tremendously rewarding.  Governors are in the process of appoin ng a new Head to start in September 2015 and parents will be informed of any developments.  

At the end of term we say goodbye to our Chaplain, Anne Marie Lavelle and to Maths teachers, Mrs McGuire and  Mrs Robson. I thank them for all they have given to English Martyrs and wish them well for the future. 

Adverse weather and publicising unplanned school closure  

With colder temperatures on the way I thought it would be useful to remind parents of our procedures regarding any school closure as a result of adverse weather.  Parents should be aware that we will do everything possible to keep the school open and we would only close the school in extremely rare circumstances.   If we do need to close the school we would make the announcement via our website and via BBC Radio Tees.  These are the only ways in which we would make such an announcement and parents should disregard a message by any other form of media. 

Catholic Partnership Spelling Bee Two teams, combining eight Year 7 and 8 students, a ended a Catholic Partnership Spelling Bee compe on on Friday 28th November. All eight students preformed excellently and enjoyed a fun day of exci ng games and tough compe on! Eighteen teams took part on the day and the standard was excep onally high; a huge well done to all who par cipated! Eve Plant, Joshua Cain, Rose Allen and Thomas Wills made it through to the second round whilst George Relton, Mia Simpson, Luke Stokel and Michael Winship ba led through the heats to finish in third place! Further congratula ons to George Relton who was awarded a Spirit of Spelling cer ficate for his outstanding speed and precision throughout the  compe on. 

Year 9 visit to  Cologne Christmas Markets 

On Friday 5th  December a total of 39 students from English Martyrs and Manor College set off to experience the tradi onal German Christmas markets in Cologne and Aachen.  We arrived in Cologne on Saturday morning and spent the day ge ng to know the city and shopping in the markets as well as comple ng a town quiz.  In the a ernoon we visited the chocolate museum on the bank of the river Rhine where we saw the produc on  process and of course sampled the chocolate!  On Sunday we travelled to the border city of Aachen and visited the local market and bought Christmas decora ons, novel es and 'Printen' - the local Christmas biscuits.  Students were also able to prac se their language skills and enjoy  Bratwurst, Currywurst and Pommes!  It was a great  experience and really got us into the Christmas spirit! 

Catholic Partnership Eurovision Song Contest A big cheer goes to the pupils who took part in the Catholic Partnership Eurovision Song Compe on held at Carmel College, The Headlands, Darlington on Wednes-day 10th December.  They came a resounding second place singing in French.   Bravo!  

Hartlepool Art Club Compe on Nov 2014 Each year the Hartlepool Art Club runs a town wide compe on that is open to all secondary schools in the town. They set two categories: The Stephen Crowther award for the best GCSE coursework and The Walter Parker award for the best GCSE Exam.  There is also a special award called The Atkinson Print Trophy for Excellence to be presented to the student showing the most crea ve poten al.  We are happy to announce that Emily Ward gained first prize for the Stephen Crowther award and was also chosen to receive the Atkinson paint Trophy as well! Jenny Wilson also gained second prize in this category.  We are also delighted that Olivia Ward gained second prize for the Walter Parker award.  The awards were presented at the Hartle-pool Art gallery on Nov 16th at 6.30pm and the girls received £100 for first place and £50 for second. 

Christmas Card Compe on 2014 This year we had a fantas c response to the Christmas card compe on and the Art  Department would like to thank all students for taking part. All of the entries were won-derful.  The winning entries were Andrea Lopez 9MC1, Nikola Widynska 8TM2, and Robyn Thompson 9MC2 who produced spec-tacular entries. All girls will see their cards printed professionally with her name on it and these cards will be used by Mr Lee to post to friends of the school. All girls will receive art equipment for their wonderful and crea ve entries. 

Trench Art 100 Years Commemora on  Each year the Catholic Partnership decides upon a theme for all Art departments to  develop and create different types of artwork for a major exhibi on at Durham Cathedral. This year the theme is ‘Awe and Wonder’.  This year we looked at artwork associated with the 100 year remembrance of World War 1. The idea was to produce 100 pieces of ceramics to mark each year of the war. To achieve this we focussed on ‘Trench Art’. This was a collec on of empty  shell casings that the soldiers worked into to produce quite decora ve and personal artwork. We also decided for the first  me this year to involve everyone: pupils, teachers, school staff, and the extended community. Everyone got on-board and all worked together to produce some wonderful pieces of ceramics that looked like shell casings that had carved imagery or personal messages on them. Some of the 

work produced is truly remarkable. Years 8 / 9 / 10 / 12 / 13, 18 teachers and 20 members of the community  produced work for this project. We intend to arrange all 100 pieces into the shape of a poppy, have the central pieces painted black and the poppy shaped pieces in bronze/gold. To add to this we will also include all the poppies worn by the students on Remembrance Day, sca ering them through the work. These poppies have personal messages wri en on them by the students. The exhibi on will open on the 17th January at Durham cathedral for a private viewing for those who took part in it and will be on public display for 2 weeks a er that. we fully encourage you to visit it as you will not be disappointed.  

Hexham & Newcastle Catholic Partnership Design Technology Show On Monday 17th November we displayed  students’ outstanding Design and Technology work at the Na onal Glass Centre in Sunderland. The innova ve display formed part of an exhibi on of work produced by students from all schools in the Hexham & Newcastle Catholic Partnership. The evening started with a couple of talks, then everyone was invited to look 

around the exhibi on, many people complimented the quality and crea vity of the work produced by English Martyrs students. During the evening people were invited to a end one of two glass blowing demonstra ons and we were delighted to hear we would be given the bowl we had watched being blown.  This was an amazing oppor-tunity for our students to showcase their work in such a fabulous space. The quality and diversity of the work was breath-taking and the students should be very proud.  

English Martyrs Students Host Masterchef 2014. On Wednesday 19th November  The Food Technology Department hosted this year’s Catholic Partnership Masterchef  compe on. A fusion of food from across the globe filled our kitchen as seven pairs of young chefs took to the stoves to ba le out this year’s Partnership Masterchef. Each team was given two hours to produce a two course meal on a budget of less than £5. With a variety of dishes from all over the world students demonstrated excep onal culinary flair and synergy, showcasing skills of bread making, pastry work and flavour balancing. The English Martyrs team of Niamh Barker and Amy Callaghan cooked Chicken roulade surprise served with lemon couscous, courge e ribbon and tomato with garlic sauce. For dessert they made melt in the middle chocolate pudding, served on raspberry coulis with a crème anglaise sauce. We were thrilled with the results as the standards were excep onally high this year and all teams produced some fabulous food. Our girls worked with enthusiasm and determina on and were awarded 2nd prize! Well done to Niamh and Amy.

Young Enterprise On Wednesday 19th November, six students from English Martyrs Sixth Form College travelled to Northumbria University to par cipate in a Young Enterprise Trading event to sell their product ‘Twas the night before Christmas...in a jar’.  This was a fantas c opportunity for students to prac se their trading skills as well as meet up with other students taking part in the Young Enterprise Company Programme and size up the compe on of course! Highlight of the day was the team winning ‘Best Trade Stand’ at the event. The students taking part were Connie Sullivan (Managing Director), Anna Cook (Company Secretary), Keiran Robertson (Opera ons & Marke ng), Adam Thompson (Opera ons & Sales), Kieran Tait (Finance  Manager) and Michael Hay (Sales).  Students are s ll taking orders for their Christmas design so if you would like one please ask to speak to Mrs Hughes (Head of Business & Enterprise) or alterna vely one of the students involved.  

Hartlepool Mail Poetry Compe on Congratula ons to Riya Nighoskar of 11TM2 who won the Hartlepool Mail’s Young Writer’s Poetry Compe on. Young people across the town were asked to pen a poem to commemorate the bombardment of Hartlepool which took place 100 years ago on 16th December 1914.  Riya won first prize in the over 11 category; runners-up from English Martyrs School were Catherine Wates 11JI2, Lily Hannon 11MC2 and Lauren Howells 11MC2. Riya has been invited to a end the celebra ons at the Borough Hall on Tuesday 16th December where her poem will be read aloud.  

Trench Le er Wri ng Congratula ons to Dominic Timlin 7JB1 who won the Trench Le er Wri ng Compe on; also a huge well done to Melanie Blair 7JI1 who was runner up. Thank you to all students who  entered.   The next Literacy Wri ng Compe on is en tled ‘New Beginnings’: students are encouraged to write a short story of no longer than 200 words. Entries to be handed to Mrs Fox and Mrs Brown.

U13 Town Volleyball. Congratula ons to the boys and girls who took part in the town volleyball tournament on 3 Dec. The boys finished equal top on points but unfortunately in second place due to points difference. The squad included:  Ben Weighill, George Relton, Alfie Bingham, Josh Ward, Noah Newcomb, Elliot Dawson. The girls finished town champions and will represent Hartlepool in the Tees Valley round. The winning girls squad included: Klaudia Kubrak, Wiktoria Borowicz, Emily Buckley, Elizabeth Skidmore,Grace Gilhespy. 

Year 8 boys and girls represented the school at the Hartlepool Schools Sportshall Athle cs compe on. The girls came 1st with High Tunstall in 2nd place, Dyke House 3rd and Manor in 4th. The boys were narrowly beaten by High Tunstall, with Dyke House in 3rd and Manor 4th. Both teams will go on to represent the district in the Tees Valley Compe on in the new year. Well done to all compe tors and good luck in the next round! 

Cross Country On Saturday 8th November, Cross Country teams from Years 7 - 10 competed in the English Schools North East Finals; the only school from Hartlepool to qualify.  Compe on was extremely strong with representa ves from many public and boarding schools. The students  conducted themselves in an exemplary manner having reached this high level of compe on. Teams from all year groups represented the school at the Town event on 19th November, held at High Tunstall School. The students performed admirably. Team results saw the Y7 boys come 3rd and the Y7 girls 3rd. Boys in Y8 and 9 came 1st with the girls finishing as runners up. The teams in Y10 and 11 both were crowned Town Champions. Notable boys’ performances came from Sonny Smailes and Nathan Cross who won their races, with Sam Tyers claiming a  second place finish, closely followed in 3rd by Keaton Robbins. Adam Stokle also managed an excellent 3rd place. For the girls, Jodie Walker claimed a 2nd place spot closely followed in 3rd by Laura Temperley. Ellie Waddup was runner up.  The older girls managed the best performance of the day with the first 4 runners all hailing from English Martyrs. Winner was Lucy Johnson, followed home by Niamh McMorris, Grace Lambert and Mia Crawford.  These performances combined gave the teams an overall victory by a massive 124 points.  Well done to all involved. 

Badminton Congratula ons to the KS3 Badminton team (girls) who were crowned Town Champions on 20th November. They progress to the County Round of the Na onal Schools Finals which will take place in January. The KS4 boys were strong runners up to a formidable High Tunstall team the following week. The Badminton teams put on a good show at the Catholic Partnership tour-nament on 26th November. Notable  performances were the Y9 ‘A’ boys team finishing as runners up and the Y8 “A’ girls team finishing a creditable third. Overall, Y8 and 9 combined teams finished third.  Well done to all involved.

North East Regional Trampolining The EMS Trampoline Squad competed in the North East round of the  Na onal School Compe on with some outstanding results. The  compe on was held at Killingworth with the top 3 individuals and 2 teams qualifying through to Zonal Finals in Northern Ireland. Lewis  Rodgers was our top performing individual managing to secure 2nd Place in a compe ve Intermediate U14 Boys sec on. Other notable performances came from Olivia Bennison coming 9th/44 in the U16 Novice Girls compe -on. The best team performance came from the U16 Girls Novice team of 

Olivia Bennison, Olivia Atkinson, Erin Dobing and Rachel Kirby coming  over-all 3rd missing out by just 0.8 on gaining a qualifica on spot.  Congratula ons to all students who competed and good luck to Lewis in Northern Ireland. The next trampoline compe on will be the Hartlepool Schools in January.

Lent Retreat to Ampleforth Our annual Lent retreat takes place at Ampleforth Abbey on the weekend of Palm Sunday which is the 27th – 29th March 2015. This retreat is open to students in every year group and is always full! There are 45 places and the cost is £50. If you would like to go, please see Miss Malcolmson or Mr Dunn for a le er, or pick one up from the Chapel. Ampleforth Abbey is a stunning monastery in North Yorkshire, and it will be the BEST start to the Easter holidays and the greatest way to prepare for Holy Week. As usual, the retreat will be a lot of fun and will no doubt involve some kind of fancy dress. Places will be allocated on a first come – first served basis upon receipt of deposit and consent form. 

Remembrance Day On 11th November we held a short service of remembrance to remember those who lost their lives in war and to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of WWI. 

Daniel Hughes was le  disappointed at missing the annual Children In Need fun run. As a result he organised to complete the distance at a later  me in the school’s fitness suite to ensure he could support the school and the charity with his efforts. Daniel completed his 5k on the 13th of November in a fantas c  me of 30mins 27seconds. Well done Daniel on suppor ng this great event. 

Children in Need 2014 A quick update on our fundraising in November for the Children in Need charity. We had another fantas c week of  fundraising this year so thank you to staff, parents and students who have contributed to any of the ac vi es that took 

place. We raised a staggering £2925. This amazing amount of money was collected through a lot of hard work and dedica on from everyone involved. Ac vi es 

included a sponsored fun run, sponsored silence, sponsored leg wax, cake sales, hot dog sales, tombola’s and many many 

more. A group of students travelled to Stockton to hand over the cheque to the BBC. 

The English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College annual produc on of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ was a resounding success. The show featured over 60 students from Years  7-13 both on stage, back-stage and in the orchestra. The show ran for four nights to a packed audience of nearly 1000 people. Staff, parents, governors and all who a ended had a thoroughly enjoyable  evening.  Notable performances included Amy Chapman and Georgia  Lennon ( Y11) who played Dorothy on two nights each; Sean McCloskey  Y13 ( The Lion); Ellis Miller Y11 ( Tin Man) and Sam Burrell Y12( Scarecrow)

and Alex Mailen ( The Wizard). In addi on Poppy Stuart Y12 and Olivia Carey Y10 played a deligh ul Glinda and Nikita Nighoskar Y13, a very scary Wicked Witch of the West!!  The costumes were wonderful and a  dedicated team of staff led by  Mrs Liddell-Fisher ensured all the cast looked fantas c on stage.  The orchestra deserve a par cular men on for coping with an extremely difficult score of which not many schools would be capable!  We are already looking forward to next year.   

On Tuesday 4th November we held our very first EMS FolkFest! Local folk band ‘The Young Uns’ spent a day working with our GCSE and AS Level Music students and the evening gig featured performances from the day and also specially 

formed groups and soloists, including some special staff appearances! Well done to all involved!  

DVDs of the show are available form the School Office priced £7.00. There are two op ons, Wednesday night  featuring Amy Chapman as Dorothy and Thursday Night featuring Georgia Lennon as Dorothy.   

History London Trip This year was a par cularly poignant year for the History London trip, as we were able to see the clay poppies at the Tower of London to mark the Centenary of the Outbreak of World War 1.  As usual, we thoroughly enjoyed the Churchill War  cabinets and the london dungeons, as well as seeing the spectacular show Wicked.  The students were an absolute credit to the school, and they learnt a lot from the very busy two days! We already have a number of students asking to go again next year!  

Bombardment Project On Wednesday 10th December, a group of Y7 students worked with the folk music group The Young Un’s in prepara on for a performance for local dignitaries at the Borough Hall on Tuesday 16th December. Students learned a series of songs inspired by the Bombardment of Hartlepool 100 years ago. Titles include ‘Billy the Butcher’s boy’ inspired by a local butcher’s boy who ran to West Hartlepool with two cows and some saveloys while Hartlepool was being shelled. The students also took part in some role play ac vi es and 4 students; Daniel Hughes, Shola Buckle, Gary Bolton and Bekkah Jackson have been  selected to perform their role play at the Borough Hall on Tuesday 16th December. 

The Christmas Day Truce.  We were lucky enough to be able to take part in the 100 year commemora ons at Durham University Palace Green library this December, and took 14 yr 8 students to this event.  During the day, we were able to research and take an ac ve and 'hands on' approach to the study of the outbreak of The Great War, and the Christmas day truce that occurred on the No Mans' Land of the Western Front in 1914. Students had a fantas c day, learning so much in a different environment.  

On Thursday 11th December, 7 Y10 students a ended a range of commemora ve workshops at Hartlepool College of FE. The morning was designed to give students a detailed understanding of Hartlepool’s role in World War One. The morning included lectures from keynote speakers, film and voice clips of survivors of the bombardment as well as an examina on of artefacts and art work inspired by the War.

Catholic Partnership Media Oscars. On Tuesday 25th November, sixteen of our sixth form students put on their glad–rags to a end the annual Catholic  Partnership Media Oscars. Having had their outstanding work nominated by their teachers, Rebecca Sco , James Irvin,  Olivia Anderson, Emily Ward, Julianne Manit and Chloe Harvey all beat off s ff compe on from all of the schools in the partnership, taking home Oscars for their work. Amber Williams and Hannah Ferguson narrowly missed out on achieving an award for their magazine front cover and ar cle, coming away with cer ficates for highly commended work. The winners were decided by lecturers in Media Studies from the University of Teesside. This was a fantas c occasion and achievement for the students and a great night was had by all!

Sixth Form Christmas Market and Jumper On Friday 5th, Year 12 and Year 13 had their annual Christmas Market and Jumper day.  Students arrived wearing their Christmas jumpers, in the hope of being judged the best or even gaining recogni on from being the most  

tasteless! Some jumpers were full of sparkling lights, whilst others boasted jingling bells and  nsel. Some students decided to go one step further and wear onesies or even bring Father Christmas to life! Students worked in form groups with their tutor, running their own crea ve Christmas themed stall to raise funds for the Leavers’ Dinner. The stalls  included the opportunity to chat with Santa himself, feast on hot turkey sandwiches, a fes ve themed photo booth and lots and lots of delicious cakes! All had a ‘jolly’  me and managed to raise over £600.  A big thank you to all involved. 

Westminster Trip The Year 13 Sociology   students a ended the Palace of Westminster on Monday 1st December 2014. They  enjoyed a tour of the Houses of Commons and Lords  respec vely. They also  experienced an educa onal visit to the Victoria and  Albert museum which  included The Disobedient Objects exhibi on and the Horst photography  exhibi on. 

Deba ng Ma ers Compe on Another year, another ‘Deba ng Ma ers’ Compe on. This year the first round was held at Teesside University and saw our students faced with topical debates around whether sports people are good role models and whether Britain should remain within the EU. Although we put up an admirable fight, we were narrowly beaten by Stokesley school, even a er winning a vote taken by the audience. We had another fantas c team this year – from those who agreed to speak to those who ably assisted in the detailed research and speeches that were presented.  The  students were superb ambassadors for the college, asking  challenging ques ons and really ge ng into the spirit of the  debate! Thanks goes to Mrs Walker too for the prepara on.  

SPEED CHESS PROVES A GREAT SUCCESS AT ENGLISH MARTYRS! Monday, December 1st, saw the first ever English Martyrs School SPEED CHESS Tournament – with 11 students playing a  series of games in St Anne’s Hall, with only 5 minutes each to complete all their moves. This was a ‘turbo-charged’ form of the game which was new to most of the young compe tors – but they coped well with the different demands of the game and the extra pressure of the  cking clock! In the end, it was last year’s main tournament winner, Brandon Casey (of Year 9) who triumphed – remaining unbeaten throughout the a ernoon – although he was pushed all the way by many of his opponents including some s ll rela vely new to chess as a game – let alone the more rapid style. Paul Lee (also of Year 9) was a close second, with a very strong  performance from Joe Spaldin (of Year 7). Nathan Liddell-Archer was the best performing Year 8 student on the day. Headteacher Mr Lee presented the trophy to Brandon Casey and a chess book to each compe tor, so they can con nue their progress in chess at home as well as the Wednesday a er-school, chess club sessions in the school library. 

Engineering Plant Visit  On Monday 20th October 2014 13 of our  Y10 engineering  students visited the Nissan Sunderland Plant.   Pupils found out how Nissan engineers are adap ng to an ever-changing world and how engineers who studied tradi-onal technologies such as petrol-powered vehicles are 

now learning about electric vehicle technology.  Students had a presenta on to find out more about STEM  careers and discovered more about the 100% elec-tric Nissan LEAF.  They were then taken on a tour of the produc on line to see how the cars were built using their con nual manufacturing and ‘Just In Time’ process. This was an amazing opportunity for your students and they had a wonderful and informa ve morning. 

EDF Energy Mentoring Scheme This year we have con nued working in partnership with EDF Energy on their mentoring scheme. This is a fabulous opportunity for our Sixth Form students to become involved with  local business and gain experience for their future careers.  This year saw the second EDF en-ergy mentoring scheme which was offered to our Science and Maths 6th form students.    The process involved a launch evening to interested students and their parents and then a compe ve applica on and  interview process. Eight of our students were shortlisted to the second phase and seven successfully appointed to the scheme.  The successful candidates will now par cipate in mentoring contact sessions with the EDF Energy Mentors and have  training days throughout the year at the power plant in Hartlepool.  This wonderful opportunity provides our students with high quality work experience, employment prepara on and work based skills alongside an insight into a market leader  industry to help prepare them for their future and also poten al for students to progress onto their graduate sponsorship scheme.  This programme is part of EDF’s strategy to prepare young people for work and begins the start of a strong  working rela onship with English Martyrs. 

Enterprise On Friday 21st November our Y10 Business students  par cipated in a town wide enterprise event as part of Global entrepreneur week which is the world’s largest campaign to promote entrepreneurship.  The students listened to an inspira onal talk from local entrepreneur Lucinda Grange and then worked with local business entrepreneurs to learn about the skills needed to set up and run a successful business.   It was a fantas c and informa ve a ernoon for our  students. 

EMA Estee Lauder  Beauty and Hair Evening On Thursday 13th November English Martyrs School hosted an event to raise funds on behalf of the EMA.  The hair and beauty evening took place in the Sixth Form Common Room with lots of stalls selling their products for Christmas. Over 60  ckets were sold and the evening was a great success with more than £450 being raised for the EMA.  A special thank you goes to the Catering and Hospitality students who stayed back a er school to cater for this event.  The quality of the food produced was outstanding.   

The English Martyrs Associa on The EMA (The English Martyrs Parent / Teacher / Friends Associa on) works to raise money to benefit the school. All monies raised by the EMA are donated to the school and used to contribute to many projects across a range of Departments and 

ac vi es. As a parent of a pupil at The English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College you are automa cally a member of the EMA and are invited to a end mee ngs and events.  Mee ngs are held once per half term on Monday evenings at 7.00 pm in the Conference Room (St Anne’s Building, opposite the main school office). They normally last for approximately one

Student Safety  Would parents please avoid dropping their children off in any of the staff car parks at any  me during the school day.  It is in the best interests of all students’ safety if the number of vehicles entering the site is kept to a minimum.  

Medicines / Tablets  Please remember that students must not carry any tablets / medicines in school. If students need to bring tablets to school they should hand them in to Mr Craddy for safekeeping.  Thank you

Year 11 Photograph -Friday 9th January  All Year 11 students will have their photograph taken on Friday 9th January. Students should be in school for  8.50 am and should assemble in the Dining Hall. Any student who turns up for the photo with ar ficial  colouring on their hair will not be allowed on the photograph.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this year’s  Opera on Christmas Child appeal.  

We were able to send 31 shoe boxes to children for Christmas. 

Exam Invigilators / Vacancies We are currently looking to recruit Exam Invigilators for the Summer 2014 GCE and GCSE Exams.  The  exams run from 11th May – 24th June. Invigilators are employed on a temporary, casual basis.  You do not need to be available every day during this period but we do ask that you are available at least two full days each week.  Please contact the

Online e‐payments for school meals and other school purchases You may be aware the school is introducing online payment to help reduce administra on and cash handling in school and also to allow pupils to reduce the amount of cash they carry to school.  For school meals, each pupil has an account.  If they are to purchase from the cafeteria you will be required to top up this account with money. There are now three ways to pay money into this account:  ipayimpact web site www.ipayimpact.co.uk  Cheques made payable to Hartlepool Borough Council.  Please put pupil name and year group on reverse of cheque.  Cash payments using the revalua on unit(s) located in the school In order to use the ipayimpact web site you will need to email the school reques ng your login details.

FREE SCHOOL MEALS Children whose parents are in receipt of one of the following are en tled to receive free school meals (FSM): 

Income Support (IS) Income Based Job Seekers Allowance (IBJSA) An income related employment and support allowance Support under part VI of the Immigra on and Asylum Act 1999 Child Tax credit (provided they are not en tled to Working Tax Credit) and have an annual income which from 6th April 2013 

does not exceed £16190 as assessed by HMRC If you are in any doubt whether your son / daughter is eligible for Free School Meals (and the associated Pupil Premium payment) contact Hartlepool Civic Centre on 266522.  You will need to supply your  Na onal Insurance number before they carry out a simple test via their Eligibility Checking Service. Remember 

School can provide packed lunches or a hot meal as part of the Free School Meals service In the 2014 / 2015 financial year schools will receive £935 per secondary pupil who has ever 

been  eligible for free school meals. This could help your child in a wide range of ways. 

School finishes on Friday 19th December 2014 at 1.55 pm for the Christmas Break School re‐opens on Tuesday 6th January 2015 at 8.50 am. 

School Uniform / PE Kit All school uniform and PE kit is available from: Altered Images, Hartlepool Enterprise Centre, 

Brougham Terrace. The store is open from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm 

Monday to Friday  and 10.00 am to 2.00 pm on Saturday. Tel: 

01429 265413. If you have any items of school uniform or PE kit that your child no longer needs (which are s ll in good condi on) we would be grateful if you would send them to school. We will then keep a supply of uniform and PE kit in school which can be loaned
