Hillsdale’s refusal to accept government funding, even indirectly in the form of taxpayer-subsidized student aid, means it is free to admit the best students, hire the best faculty, and stay true to its educational mission. It also means that Hillsdale students are dependent on the generosity of parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends of the College for the grants, scholarships, and loans that make their Hillsdale education possible.

Since 1985, Hillsdale has awarded more than $119 million in government aid replacement funding through the Student Independence Grant and Loan Fund, and it will cost the College $5.2 million to replace federal and state student aid for 2019–2020. While the net cost to attend Hillsdale is $80,786 per student for this academic year, the College is able to set the price at $39,758 because of the private support it receives.

***

There are two types of student scholarships—remitted and endowed. Within these general categories, donors may specify recipient qualifications. A remitted scholarship donation can be disbursed immediately, regardless of the amount. For an endowed scholarship, the total amount received must reach $50,000 before

funds can be disbursed at a five percent rate—$2,500 per student for the school year, or more for larger endowments. An endowed scholarship of $50,000 or more provides awards in perpetuity.

For example, the State Endowed Scholarships—an initiative started by parents Barb and Tom Parell (Cecily ’17 and Isabelle ’19)—support students from a specific state. To date, two such scholarships—for students from Montana and Texas—have reached the $50,000 endowment threshold (additional donations are welcome), and 15 others are partially funded. The Parents Association has a goal to endow a scholarship for every state and to augment the existing scholarship funds so they can support multiple students from those states each year.

Parents may also choose to support other scholarship funds at Hillsdale, including the Hillsdale Tradition Awards, which replace federal work study; merit scholarships, given to students who excel in academics, athletics, or the arts; and the Frederick Douglass Scholarship for high-achieving students with exceptional financial need. Parents may also establish their own named scholarship—either remitted or endowed—with recipient criteria of their choosing.

Rich and Angela Teska, parents of Abigail ’20 and Amelia ’23, are members of the Parents Association Steering Committee. Here they share their experiences attending and hosting Summer Send-Off Parties.

HOW DID YOU LEARN ABOUT HILLSDALE COLLEGE?

ANGELA: The education of our children has always been very important to us, and we were concerned about what was happening in many of the colleges and universities across the country. As a family, we identified the most important aspects of college and so we came up with a list of criteria. We ended up with a very short list of schools. I had heard of Hillsdale through other homeschool families, and it met almost every one of our criteria.

RICH: Hillsdale seemed a perfect fit for how our children were taught and what their areas of interest were in the liberal arts.

WHAT DID YOU EXPERIENCE AS A NEW PARENT ATTENDING YOUR FIRST SUMMER SEND-OFF PARTY?

ANGELA: It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the College and meet other Hillsdale families. Mary Ewers did a fantastic job of providing relevant information about the College and explaining how parents can support the school financially and by volunteering on a Parents Association subcommittee. Talking with seasoned Hillsdale parents gave us a peace of mind that our daughter had chosen the right college. And I was also very grateful to be able to ask questions before we arrived on campus.

RICH: The whole idea that we were asked to participate in the life of Hillsdale as parents was quite appealing to us. I hadn’t seen this in many other colleges, and it all started when we showed up at our first send-off party. It was a two-hour, informal meeting of a group of parents with their students—a mini parent orientation. This was the first time the College engaged with us as parents and explained how we could get involved and help and how we could become partners in the mission. We were encouraged to be involved.

Summer Send-Off Parties Are Becoming a Hillsdale TraditionA Conversation with Rich and Angela Teska

WHAT DO YOU WANT OTHER PARENTS TO EXPERIENCE WHEN YOU HOST A SUMMER SEND-OFF PARTY?

ANGELA: We really want to give other parents an opportunity to experience what we experienced at our first party. The primary focus is the parents, but students can also come along. We take a more casual approach—“sips with snacks”—light hors d’oeuvres and people meet for about an hour. While the parents are mingling inside, the students are outside on the deck so they can get to know one another and incoming freshmen can ask questions. Providing a venue for Hillsdale families to come together and receive important information is an amazing opportunity.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT HOSTING SUMMER SEND-OFF PARTIES?

RICH: They are local events. They are for people within driving distance of our home. The people that attend are folks we want to get to know because we have something in common, because our children are at the same school. We’ve made lifelong friends with many of these families, and we continue to see them on campus. Some of them keep coming back for these send-off parties, even though their kids are upperclassmen.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH OTHER PARENTS?

RICH: Angela and I are committed to Hillsdale’s mission. We understand how difficult it is for the College to do what it’s doing—to do things the way it does. And commitment comes down, in some ways, to helping financially. Because Hillsdale is not getting a nickel from the government, and it is only because of scholarships, funded by donors, that a Hillsdale education is affordable to so many qualified students.

ANGELA: I would add that Hillsdale College has exceeded our expectations. It’s been a tremendous opportunity for our daughter, and she’s taken advantage of it and developed great relationships with professors. And from our perspective, the people are just so nice. Everyone’s delightful, and we love getting to know more and more people from the Hillsdale community. ■

Christ Chapel Raises the Soul to the Sublime

Larry P. ArnnPresident

As I write, Christ Chapel nears completion. What began as a hole in the ground now stands as a

structure some 27,000 square feet in area and nearly 90 feet in height. It was modeled after an English church, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and named for Christ Church, where the Founding Fathers worshipped during the Continental Congress. If you have not yet seen it, I encourage you to visit. It is sublime.

In The Abolition of Man, C. S. Lewis recounts a story of Samuel Taylor Coleridge observing a waterfall with two tourists. One tourist calls the sight “sublime” and the other calls it “pretty.” Coleridge finds himself agreeing with the first and despising the second. He does so, Lewis says, because the waterfall is noble and grand, so much so such that it raises the soul to sublimity. To call it “pretty” is insufficient, a slander against its majesty.

For the same reason, Christ Chapel is sublime. Hillsdale is a Christian college with a duty to render praise to God, as is His due: the Chapel stands at the heart of campus as a monument to His goodness. But the Chapel also inspires us, elevating our hearts and minds to God. The ceiling, columns, and windows are high, generous, and tall—transcendental and directional, the architect would say. The chancel and nave are built so that voice and instrument resound beautifully, divinely even. In the Chapel, one cannot help being filled with a sense of awe and wonder at the Lord’s majesty. We could not have built it in any other way.

Christ Chapel will serve as a place of prayer and worship for the College and its students for decades and centuries to come. We are blessed to have had the means to build it as we have—not many do. I hope that you will come see it after its completion in the fall. You will not be disappointed. ■

When Trenton Richardson ’20 made his decision to attend Hillsdale, his parents Kristen and Dave didn’t know how deeply they would be involved in his college experience. It wasn’t until they attended a Summer Send-Off Party that they realized their involvement was not only welcomed, but encouraged.

The more the Richardsons learned about Hillsdale, the more they wanted to know and to be involved. They joined The President’s Club as a way to support the College’s mission. They became chairs of the Parents Association Steering Committee. They attended Parents Weekends and hosted Summer Send-Off Parties of their own. And they visited campus to attend CCAs.

One of their favorite activities has been volunteering

for the Career Services Office. Their goal there is to prepare Hillsdale students for the professional workplace. They do this by conducting mock interviews and helping students build their resumes. “I find it so rewarding,” Kristen says. “The students are so open and eager for feedback. And it’s fun.”

Trenton is a senior now, but the Richardsons will continue their involvement with Hillsdale through The President’s Club. “The beauty of being members comes from taking advantage of the invitations and attending events, whether it be in your local area or on campus. We’ve gotten so much out of it and continue to learn from it.” ■

Leave Your Mark on the Liberty Walk

Here and there around Hillsdale’s campus are statues of Washington,

Jefferson, Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Churchill, Reagan, and

Thatcher. They are connected by a bricked pathway known as the

Liberty Walk. The number of bricks along the pathway total 14,000,

and more than 10,000 have already been purchased and inscribed

with the names of individuals, families, and businesses that support

Hillsdale College. Each brick is 4” x 8” in size and can include three

rows of text and up to 14 characters per line.

Mr. and Mrs. Stephen M. Barney Sr. have issued a $500,000 challenge grant through the Barney Family Foundation. Mr. and Mrs. Dan and Kellie Peters have

issued an additional $100,000 challenge grant through the Lovett & Ruth Peters Foundation. Together these grants constitute a $600,000 $1-for-$1 matching gift challenge.

Funds raised through this challenge will go toward the endowment of the Barney Charter School Initiative (BCSI), which helps to launch and provides ongoing guidance to classical

K-12 charter schools nationwide. There are currently more than 20 Hillsdale-affiliated K-12 schools in eleven states, with more schools opening each year.

To qualify for the challenge, gifts and pledges must be designated to the BCSI Endowment Fund. All pledges must be paid in full by June 30, 2020. If you would like to contribute to the BCSI Endowment Fund, please contact Vice President for Institutional Advancement John Cervini at [email protected] or (517) 607-2569. ■

“What made the cruise really special was the Hillsdale part of it. Both the agenda with the lectures—they had really good people to do the lectures and the seminars—and the other fellow Hillsdale cruisers. It was wonderful to have dinner and conversation with them. It’s like we had 300 friends, even though we didn’t know any-body on the cruise.”

I am honored to be part of this fine group of parents and grandparents who live out the Scripture passage, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” We are grateful, as is every student. HOST A SEND-OFF PARTY NEXT

SUMMER

Each summer, Hillsdale parents volunteer to host send-off parties for incoming and current students and their parents. This past summer, there were 22 such parties hosted in 14 states. These were wonderful opportunities for freshmen and their parents to meet other parents and students from their geographic area, ask questions, and enjoy the camaraderie that comes from being part of the Hillsdale family. It is an ideal way for parents to get involved with Hillsdale College and all it has to offer them. Won’t you take a turn next summer? Our office coordinates these gatherings in response to the many calls we receive from freshman parents inquiring about such events. If you would like to host a summer get-together, please go to the Hillsdale website, click on Info

For, then Parents, then Parents Association, then Volunteer

Opportunities. The sub-committee list will appear, and you can click the email address of the chair of the Freshman/Welcome Sub-Committee. Current sub-committee chair Hua Johsens will assist you from there. You may also sign up by calling the Parent Relations Office.

HOLD THAT DATE!

Fall Parents Weekend will be October 25–27, 2019, with Phonathon dates of October 21–24, 2019. Spring Parents Weekend will be February 28–March 1, 2020, with Phonathon dates of February 24–27, 2020. Please volunteer! We look forward to hearing from you.

GRATITUDE

Scholarships are a main focus of fundraising here at the College. Without the large number of friends and supporters who donate toward scholarships each year, many of our great students would be unable to attend Hillsdale. These generous people form a partnership with the College, and—as President Arnn is fond of saying—that’s what the word “college” means. As we continue to raise money for state-specific scholarships (see below), please help to remind your students to be diligent about writing thank-you notes to their scholarship donors and meeting with them when they visit campus.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Because scholarship funding is so essential, the Parents Association Steering Committee has decided to direct its efforts toward student aid funding for the 2019–2020 academic year, with the aim of raising $3 million to support Hillsdale’s private scholarships, grants, and loans.

One way parents can contribute is by giving to an existing scholarship fund. These include WHIP scholarships for students interning in Washington, D.C., The Frederick

Douglass Scholarship for highly qualified students with exceptional financial need, and Hillsdale Tradition Awards, which replace federal work study for students who commit to excelling in academics, working a campus job, and volunteering in the community.

Alternatively, parents can establish a named scholarship with criteria of their choice.

Last year, parents came together with an initiative to establish endowed scholarships for specific states. Contributions of any size are welcome toward the $50,000 minimum goal for each state-specific scholarship. Currently, two state scholarships have reached the $50,000 goal, and 15 more are on their way. We would love to see parent scholarships for all 50 states!

NEW AUDITORIUM

An extensive renovation to Plaster (formerly Phillips) Auditorium began in summer 2018. This expansion includes new technology and better acoustics and nearly doubles the seating capacity to 700. Guests will be able to transition easily between lectures in Plaster Auditorium and receptions in the Searle Center. I encourage you to consider the Seats of Honor campaign, through which you can purchase and name a seat in the new auditorium for a $5,000 minimum contribution.

NEW ONLINE COURSES—THE BOOK OF GENESIS

AND CONSTITUTION 101

Hillsdale College has launched two new online courses. The first, “The Genesis Story: Reading Biblical Narratives,” features Professor of English Justin Jackson with an introductory

lecture by President Arnn. Dr. Jackson’s five lectures explore major narrative themes in Genesis, including the relationship between God and man, the consequences of a rupture in that relationship, and the path toward reconciliation. The College has also released an updated version of “Constitution 101,” an eleven-session course with lectures by members of the Politics Department faculty.

As with all of our free, not-for-credit online courses, these courses will be archived at online.hillsdale.edu for on-demand viewing.

2019–2020 PHONATHONS—JUST SAY “YES!”

Help us reach our goals for scholarships and for College operations. When one of our parent callers asks you to donate during the Parent-to-Parent Phonathon, please say “Yes!” Parent volunteers will be calling from 6:00-9:30 p.m. EDT on October 21–24, 2019. Next spring’s Phonathon will be held from 6:00-9:30 p.m. EST on February 24–27, 2020. We will call parents and grandparents of current and past Hillsdale students. If you wish to volunteer as a caller in the spring, please contact Cheryl Clawson at (517) 607-2382 or [email protected]. We would love to have you join us!

CALLING ALL PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS—

JOIN THE PRESIDENT’S CLUB!

We are grateful for the increasing number of parents and grandparents who have joined The President’s Club. It is a privilege to partner with those who understand that the $80,786 net cost of a Hillsdale education far outweighs the $39,758 that is charged for tuition, room, board, and fees—a cost further reduced by additional privately funded scholarships, grants, and loans. Note the chart that compares the net cost per student for 2019–2020 with the actual cost of tuition.

Joining The President’s Club is a way to follow in the footsteps of the parents and grandparents of past students who gave so that today’s students can attend Hillsdale at an

Thankful for Parents—Our Partners!

The net cost of a Hillsdale education per student is based on the fiscal year operating budget and the total enrollment for the fiscal year. Hillsdale’s annual tuition increases averaged 3.4 percent over the past ten years.
