THE KING JOHN SCHOOL NEWSLETTER No: 50 - March 2013 The King John School 2013 Ski Trip to Courmayeur Italy We left for Courmayeur on Saturday 16 th February to begin what turned out to be an amazing week. We arrived in Courmayeur at the Hotel Telecabine with a coach of smiling students. It was a very convenient 10 minute walk to the gondola which took us up to the mountain. The hotel was really nice as were the rooms. Each day the hotel provided us with breakfast and din- ner which consisted of a 3 course meal every day. The kitchen staff, led by Antonio, were very polite and did an amazing job with the meals. Every day we went up to the mountains, collected our skis and poles and then headed off in our groups for a day of skiing. Skiing started at 9.30 and finished at 2.30. After a day of skiing, we would make our way back to the hotel to get ready for dinner and our evening activity. On day one we had a quiz led by our rep Nick which was very funny. Day two involved us going to a pizza restaurant where we experienced Italian pizza at its best, Wednesday saw us go bum boarding. This was one of the funniest activities. Thursday’s activity was ice skating – this seemed to prove quite an obstacle for a few of us and involved a lot of falling over, however all in all it was a fantastic evening. It got to Friday and it was time for the presentation evening; each instructor gave out a certificate and badge to each of the stu- dents in their group. A couple of afternoons after skiing we went straight into town from the slopes. The town was very pretty with its cobbled streets and old style buildings. I think I can speak on behalf of all the students when I say that it was an amazing week and we didn’t want to come home. On the coach home a number of awards were given out by Mr Webb; these included skier of the week nominated by the instructors, tourist of the week, best beginner, best ad- vanced skier and more. The whole area was incredible and we were very lucky to have had the opportunity to spend the week there. I’m sure I’m not the only one who now has the skiing ‘bug’. I would highly recommend it!! Duke of Edinburgh Bronze 2013 Presentation Evening On Tuesday the 5 th December the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards evening was held. For yet another year run- ning all students completed and achieved the award! The evening was a great chance to celebrate the success of all the students and what they had achieved to reach their goal. Congratulations to all the students involved. It is an absolutely fantastic achievement and shows a high level of determination and motivation. This year’s group were particularly up against it as their qualifying expedition had some terrible weather conditions. Even though it was July, it did not stop raining for the whole of the weekend!

The King John School 2013 Ski Trip to Courmayeur Italy

We left for Courmayeur on Saturday 16th February to begin what turned out to be an amazing

Summer Uniform

Dear Parent/Guardian Re: Summer Uniform 2013 From Monday 15th April Students are permitted to wear the school summer uniform. This will mean students will be allowed to wear the official school polo shirt which has the school’s logo and red edging instead of a shirt and tie. For a small minor ity of students uniform can at times be a source of conflict. In order that everyone is fully aware of our expectations please note that no alternatives to the official school polo shirt will be accepted. Students who do not wish to take up this option will be ex-pected to wear the standard uniform as per our usual requirements. During this time students will be expected to have the polo shirt tucked in at all times and blazers worn in accordance with our normal expectations. Summer polo shirts are available from the school uniform shop and an order form can be found on the school website. Any student failing to wear the summer uniform correctly will be requested to return to the standard uniform during this time. May I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support with our school uniform expectations and if you have any further comments or suggestions please feel free to contact me. Yours sincerely,

S. Watts Deputy Headteacher

Bad Weather This is the time when severe weather may cause problems for

teachers and students trying to get into school. Please listen to

local radio (BBC Essex and Heart) for up to date news from the

school. School closures will be posted on our website by 7.30am

www.thekjs.essex.sch.uk. It would be helpful if you did not

telephone the school directly—the line gets jammed and teach-

ers trying to contact the school cannot get through.

Message Board From Dr Margaret Wilson, Headteacher

I am delighted to confirm that the school’s

planning application for a two-wing exten-

sion to the Sixth Form has been successful and building will

start in September 2013 to be ready in time for the increased

leaving age to18 which comes into effect in September 2015.

Through prudent financial planning the school has sufficient

reserves to build one wing and has applied for additional

funding to complete both wings at the same time. This will

cause the least disruption to the school and, most importantly,

students’ learning. We hope we are successful in our bid.

Prior to the start of the project the existing car park will be moved and the number of parking

spaces increased. The caretaker’s house will be demolished to make way for the extensions.

The school was delighted to be asked by Rebecca Harris MP and the local Council to host an

event for survivors of the 1953 floods which devastated much of Canvey Island. It was a won-

derful afternoon with people sharing their experiences of the event, but sad that many of them

had suffered so much loss in their own family. Full details of the event are included within this

newsletter.

This year the school is introducing a graduation ceremony for our current Year 11 students and

their parents. The event will take place at the Cliffs Pavilion on Friday, 28 June and

will be an excellent opportunity to celebrate the achievement of this talented

year group.

It has been a very busy half term with an amazing number of events taking

place and great achievements in sporting events. As usual at this time of

year I suggest that students take time over the Easter holidays to start revis-

ing for those all-important exams which start very soon. Good luck to you

all and enjoy the Easter break.

Impression of new build

The King John School Examination Office now publishes all important examination information on the school website. Look in the Main Entrance section and you will see the new examinations tab on the right-hand side. We will be regularly updating the site with deadlines, times, venues, booklets and guidelines etc. Please keep checking the site for the latest information about the current and forthcoming examination sessions. Please contact the Exams Officer, Ms. S Newton, with any enquiries.

Canvey Floods

Reunion with the Flood victims of 1953

On Friday, 8 March the school was very privileged to host a reun-

ion for the survivors and some of the dedicated school staff that

cared for them during the 1953 flooding which endangered so

many lives of the residents of Canvey Island. We were honoured

to have Councillor Ray Howard attend, who kindly made a mov-

ing opening speech, in which he recalled his personal experiences.

In respect of the survivors and to commemorate the sixtieth anni-

versary of the school’s involvement we have put together a log of

events leading up to, and following, the flood.

Most of the information has been taken from the official school log along with paper cuttings held

in the school office and speaking to some of the survivors that attended the reunion.

Saturday 31st January 1953

Many islanders gathered together to celebrate the opening of Canvey’s new War Memorial Hall.

MP Mr Bernard Braine gave a short speech and the celebration dance was soon underway. Leaving

the hall and in high spirits the people battled their way home against the strong wind.

Sunday 1st February 1953

With few owning a television or telephone, the news of the two metre double tide or spring tide was

relayed to Councillor Leach of the Canvey Urban District Council by an Engineer of the Essex Riv-

er board. He immediately contacted the Island police who took action. The breaching of the sea

wall was already underway.

Monday 2nd

February 1953. Official opening of the school

The cakes were baked, and every preparation made to ensure the proud opening of the school would

run as smoothly as possible. Nobody knew that the cakes would prove to be more valuable than

feeding the numerous VIPs due to attend.

Betty Finch, a twenty two year old Domestic Science teacher, receives a phone call at 7.30am on

Sunday 1st February from the Headmaster Mr Evans, asking her to come to school as a matter of

urgency. Betty knew the seriousness of receiving such a request, which was something that rarely

happened in those days.

Two days later Betty went home, after serving tea, biscuits and the only other food available, the

cakes that had been prepared for the school opening.

Betty attended the event with her carer who had herself been a pupil at the school at the time and

remembers baking the cakes.

Mr Evans’s personal secretary Jean, had received a call at 3.30am, and was instructed to call a taxi

and come to the school without delay. After sleeping on her office floor, Jean finally went home

three weeks later.

Jean also came to the reunion and could recall many memories of that fateful night. After a tour of

the school, Jean said her goodbyes. I asked her where she had parked, and offered to escort her with

an umbrella to her car. Her reply was, “Don’t worry dear I have parked in the same place that I

used for the forty years I worked here!”

With the opening postponed, the school took on the role of a rest centre for the evacuees. Over

1,500 islanders came through its doors. Most of these people were soaking wet, shoeless and had

lost contact with loved ones.

In the school theatre, a member of staff set up an emergency register of the people who came in,

while another searched for blankets and clothing. Although fifteen hundred people passed through

the school that night, only eight hundred slept in the school.

Page 5: Parents newsletter march 2013

5

THE KING JOHN NEWSLETTER—No 50 March 2013

Whilst the evacuees were in residence, visitors to the school included The Queen Mother

accompanied by Princess Margaret, The Home Secretary (Worwell Fyfe), David Maxwell Fyfe,

Viscount Kilmuir and various other cabinet ministers.

To keep their spirits up they were entertained by the Salvation Army Band, The Palm Court Or-

chestra, Richard Attenborough, Ethel Revnell and Wilfred Pickles who all made guest appearanc-

es. So it was no wonder that the local neighbourhood renamed the school ‘The Grand Hotel’.

March 2nd

1953

After only one month the school reopened to pupils, and education took place in one wing of the

building, while the flood victims used the other wing.

July 13th

1953

The school log records; The last of the evacuees left today Mr Higgins, Mr and Miss McGilli-

vray. The school had been a rest centre for twenty three weeks.

At the meeting I spoke to Margaret Parkinson who remembers the events of that night. Margaret

was 10½ years old, and at the time lived in a bungalow in the Park Way. Realising that the fami-

ly was in danger, her father piggybacked both her and her brother across the road to a house that

was partially built. After climbing a ladder to get to the first floor and safety, the family were

joined by neighbours. The first of February was an important date for the family; it was

Margaret’s brother Anthony’s fourth birthday. So trying to keep a dangerous situation as light

hearted as possible, they sat down and celebrated with cockles and a birthday cake!

The family were taken to the Haystack Public House, and from there transported by lorry to the

school. Where they were given blankets, shoes and a drink of hot chocolate. After a short stay the

family travelled to Poplar and stayed with relatives.

Margaret still has close ties with the school, as her grandson is a year nine pupil, and her grand-

daughter is currently in year seven.

Whilst looking at photographs kindly bought in by the Benfleet Community Archive,

www.benfleethistory.org.uk, I spoke with a gentleman who told me he was 7 years old when the

flood waters came. I asked him if he could remember this happening. His reply was quietly spo-

ken and only two words. They were, “Yes…..everyday! “

In recognition of his work Mr Evans was mentioned in the 1953 Coronation Honours list, and re-

ceived an M.B.E. Also, Mr Farwell the school caretaker was not forgotten and received the

B.E.M.

Local MP Rebecca Harris closed the

afternoon with a short speech thanking

Dr Wilson for allowing such a poign-

ant gathering of people allowing time

for reflection and remembrance.

The School is very concerned about the safety of the

students on our site. With this in mind we would ask

that cars DO NOT DRIVE ONTO THE SCHOOL

SITE to drop students off or pick them up. This in-

cludes the car park at the Benfleet Road entrance. In

future the gate to the Benfleet Road car park will

be shut between 3.00pm and 3.45pm. This car park

is intended for staff and visitor parking only. A large

number of students have to cross this area to get into

school and the presence of cars driving through the car

park greatly increases the risk to students. Please take

notice of the signs on the gateway and drop your chil-

dren off outside the school site. A

small walk up the road can only be

good for them!!!

Student Services lend small amounts of money to

to lend to students.

NB. This facility will be withdrawn from

On Monday 25th February, 88 Year 7 students went to the Globe Theatre with nine members of

staff. When we arrived at the Globe, we were split into three groups and each group was given a

tour and took part in a workshop led by actors who work at the theatre. We were given brief

histories of Shakespeare’s theatre and of how the actor Sam Wanamaker’s vision came to be

part of the landscape of the South Bank. During the tour we were able to take a look at the

backstage area which is called the tiring house. Our students then went onto the stage and de-

livered lines from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

After the tour, we took part in a workshop where students had great fun acting scenes from A

Midsummer Night’s Dream. They learnt how actors and directors work with Shakespeare’s lan-

guage which gave them lots of ideas about how to interpret the extracts they were given.

After lunch, we went into the exhibition area. While they looked at artefacts from the Elizabe-

than era and from the Globe Theatre’s archives, students completed a quiz which gave them fur-

ther understanding of Shakespeare’s world.

Thank you to Mr Lister, Mr Morley, Mr Salkeld, Miss Inglis, Miss Graham, Miss Marino, Mrs

Cahill and Mrs Jeffery for helping to make the trip run smoothly. Well done to the students

who came on the trip – you were great company , and the staff at the Globe said that they were

very impressed by your enthusiasm and knowledge of Shakespeare’s world!

Raise Your Childs Attendance — Raise Their Life Chance

Good Attendance

What does your child's percentage attendance mean? Parents/carers often become con-fused about what good attendance is. As a school our target attendance percentage is 95%. Does your child have an attendance level of 90%?

• 90% attendance = ½ day missed every week! • 1 school year at 90% attendance = 4 whole weeks of lessons MISSED! • 90% attendance over 5 years of secondary school = ½ a school year missed!

Please be aware that every day your child misses from school through illness or holidays will significantly reduce their potential for future success. Research suggests that 17 missed school days a year = GCSE grade DROP in achievement. (DFE)

School Punctuality Lateness = Lost Learning = Minutes Days Lost

Parents/carers are responsible for ensuring that their son/daughter arrives at the school punctually. Students should arrive at the school for no later than 8.40am. Registration be-gins at 8.45am and form tutors electronically take the first register of the day (there is also a register taken at 2.25pm). Students must report to the student services to sign in if they arrive after 9.00am. Arriving after 9.00am without a legitimate reason will be recorded as an unauthorised absence. If a student needs to leave school early they need to bring a note to show their form tutor and make sure they show the note to student services and sign out when they leave. The Creative & Performing Arts Faculty

African Drum Jam Event

The King John School Music department were

proud to host an African Drum Jam event on

the 6th March. Students were treated to an

hour of African drumming, where they

learned about the different types of drum and

how to play them, which led to a group per-

formance at the end. The students thoroughly

enjoyed the experience and learned lots of

rhythmic musical skills in a ‘real’ situation.

Miss Ware

Gamelan Workshop The Year 13 BTEC Music class recently went

on a trip to the Southbank Centre, to par-ticipate in a Gamelan workshop.

Students had the chance to play Balinese instruments and record their final perfor-mance. It was an interesting day and ex-tremely helpful for the students ‘current

coursework.

Young Musician of the Year, is a new competi-

tion introduced this year to all students at the King

John School. We have already held the auditions

and the semi-finals, where students performed

pieces against each other in their instrumental cat-

egory (brass, keyboard, woodwind, strings and

percussion). The finals took place on the evening

of the 19th March, where the King John Musician

of the Year was decided. It has been really enjoya-

ble listening to all who auditioned and we are

looking forward to hearing the finalists: Tom Bell

(11-10), Allegra Webb (8-09), Lucas Ives (8-02),

Mark Tompkins (7-09) and Theo Fadayiro (8-05).

Results will be in the May 2013 issue.

Mrs Cann

Congratulations to the Senior Hockey team for reach-

ing the semi-finals of the Essex Cup. This is the third

year in succession that the girls have reached the semi-

finals of this cup. They played an extremely exciting

game against New Hall but conceded a last minute

goal to lose 2-1. The standard of play was outstanding

and the level of commitment by all players was unbe-

lievable. They gave their all and truly deserved to be

victorious on the day! It wasn't to be this year but we

have high hopes for next year as most of the girls will

still be under 16.

Squad members were: Danielle Sillitoe, Heather Jer-

man, Natasha Cheeseman, Hannah Amato, Sian Waite,

Ellen Taylor, Alice Boston, Amy Pownall, Megan

Cycling to success

Recently students have been given the chance to learn

how to mountain bike as part of an Olympic Legacy

project in Essex. The students are starting at basics

and gradually building up until they are able to go on

the course which the Olympic mountain bikers used in

Hadleigh.

An experienced mountain biker is coaching them. We

asked Luke about his opinion of this project: “ I think

it’s an excellent idea because it’s a growing sport at

the moment with the Olympics having been held at

Hadleigh and the development of the course. It’s a lot

to look forward to in the future.” We also asked the

coach if he thinks King John have any potential moun-

tain bikers. “ Well I hope so; a few guys and girls are

very natural so there is no reason why they shouldn’t

be able to develop themselves further.”

The BBC School Report team are looking further into

the Olympic Legacy projects in the area including

diving at Southend Leisure Centre. Please visit our

School Report website to see our Year 9 students in-

terviewing Olympic divers and looking at the legacy

of the main Olympic Park in London.

The Year 9 BBC School Report team have worked

extremely hard on finding original and interesting

stories from our local area. Their main stories have

been looking further into the Olympic Legacy

projects in the area including diving at Southend

Leisure Centre. Please visit our School Report

website to see the Year 9 students interviewing

Olympic divers and looking at the legacy of the

the whole country were offered the opportunity to

film with the BBC at the Olympic Park and be-

cause of the hard work of our students we were

thrilled to send Megan White and Josh Groenen-

YOUNG ROTARY CHEF OF THE YEAR

DISTRICT AND REGIONAL FINALS

Congratulations to Jennifer Grimble in Year 8, who

competed in the district and regional finals of the

Rotary Chef competition on Saturday, 9th February

and 16th March. It was a very tough competition

against three other schools and students in Year 10

and 11. Jennifer had two hours to make a 3 course

meal for two people under the cost of £15. We are

pleased to announce that Jennifer was the runner up

in the district competition and continued to impress

the judges at the regional final. The judges were

very impressed with not only the taste and presenta-

tion of Jennifer’s menu but her calm attitude and

competent preparation skills. We are extremely

proud of Jennifer and her talents. Well done!!!
