PARENTS NEWSLETTER TERM 3, WEEK 9 21 September 2018 Tēnā koutou katoa It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of Term 3! The past two weeks have been filled with excitement as students have visited Government House and the Beehive, learning about New Zealand’s connection to the Crown (Queen of England), the job of a Governor General and how they interface with the Prime Minister and the Government of the day. During a trip to Government House, a special (mock) Investitures Ceremony was held where nominated senior students were awarded medals for service to Maranatha Christian School. Medal recipients included Charlotte, Krisnan, Natalie and Tiari from Kotare Class. Of particular note, during a visit to the Beehive, one Maranatha Christian School group was fortunate enough to see the Prime Minister in the corridors and also spend a few minutes talking with her… what a wonderful surprise! Additionally, our Kereru and Kotare students recently visited the National Library where they had an exclusive talk with Mr Richard Foy, Chief Archivist of New Zealand/Aotearoa. This was followed by a guided tour of the He Tohu exhibition where students learned about and viewed the following documents - The Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of NZ (1835), The Treaty of Waitangi/ Te Tiriti o Waitangi (1840) and the Women’s Suffrage Petition (1893)… which celebrated its 125th year on the day of our visit! During our talk with Mr Foy, he explained the importance of keeping government records so that current and future generations are able to know New Zealand’s story. Mr Foy also shared with us the work being undertaken to digitise historic documents (there are millions of them!), however, he emphasised the wonderful experience that it is to see historical documents first -hand, rather than on a screen! Government House Visit & Investitures Beehive Visit National Library Visit & Chief Archivist My thanks to the staff for planning and attending these wonderful learning experiences, to the parents who assisted with supervision and to the staff at Government House, Parliament and the National Library for hosting our students. A special note of gratitude goes to the Prime Minister and Mr Richard Foy for taking time out of their busy schedules to talk with our students. Kia pai tō rā whakatā (Have a fantastic weekend.) Leaving Maranatha?

We understand circumstances may change suddenly and unexpectedly but if you are planning on leaving Maranatha at the end of the year, please remember that you need to give us a term’s written notice, as per your financial contract with the school.

Families who neglect to do so will be liable for a term’s Attendance Dues in lieu of a written notice.

Please do let us know if you have plans to move at the end of the year, even if you are not certain. Thank you.

Canteen—End of Term Clean We would love to have a couple of volunteers to clean our canteen on the last day of Term! If you would like to volunteer a couple of hours on Friday, 28 September we would really appreciate it. All cleaning supplies provided and we’ll even provide some morning tea to sweeten the offer! Contact the office if interested.

Congratulations to our Interzone Swimming team: Talya came 3rd in overall Freestyle. Natey, Raphy and Piper did very well in Backstroke. We are very proud of you all!!

Maranatha Basketball In Terms 2 and 3, some of the Year 3 & 4 students from Piwakawaka and Ruru classes entered a basketball team (MCS Saints) in Hutt Valley Basketball’s Monday League. The students enjoyed learning and developing new skills, working together as a team and competing against other Year 3 & 4 teams in the league. Overall, the team had great fun and represented our Lord well. Well done to the team and their whanau!
