Memorial Day–Blessing of Cemeteries
As our nation prepares to observe Memorial Day on Monday, May 25, 2015, tribute is offered to the many women and men whose lives have been given in service to our country. Prayer is also offered for those who currently serve in the military each day that the Lord may bring them home safely to their families. It is a laudable practice to offer prayers for the deceased. Consider visiting your parish cemetery on Memorial Day. When visiting the cemetery, offer the prayer listed below:
Prayer for Visiting A Cemetery
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Let us pray.
Almighty God and Father, by the mystery of the Cross, you have made us strong;
by the sacrament of the resurrection you have sealed us as your own. Look kindly upon your servants,
now freed from the bonds of mortality, and count them among your saints in heaven.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Anyone who has completed Discovering Christ is invited and encouraged to join us for Following Christ which will begin here at Ave Maria at the end of August. Also, Discovering Christ will be offered for a second time here at the parish beginning in September of this year. Please "stay tuned" for further infor-mation regarding these enriching faith-building programs on the new Evangelization!
Repast Committee - St. Agnes
Saint Agnes Parish has a repast committee that will host and prepare a meal for you and your loved ones following funerals. You select the menu and the kitch-en will prepare and serve. The service is available for any family. For more information, contact Steve Kime at 724-632-6734.
Cemetery Perpetual Care - Labeling Graves
Ave Maria
With our cemeteries being nearly a hundred years old, various grave markers continue to deteriorate. In the absence of living family members, the parish becomes responsible for what is called: “Perpetual Care” of the cemeteries. That is why we rely upon your generosity in the cemetery maintenance collection to be good stewards and care for our cemeteries as permanent resting places for our beloved dead. As a summer project, Father Ed is looking for volunteers to take photos of grave markers that are deteriorating. The graves would then need to be catalogued and maps created on the computer so that we can keep adequate updated records. If you are interested in assisting with this project, please contact Father Ed at the administration center office by telephone: 724-239-3591 or via email: [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your kind consideration of this important request!

Girl Scout Projects - Ave Maria / St. Agnes
Senior Girl Scout Troop 54138 is participating in two special service projects:
Dress For Success This is a project that collects gently used “nicer” attire to help women in disadvantaged situations when they need to dress for an interview or job related situation. It assists them to feel more confident as they enter into the next phase of their lives.
Newborns in Need This project helps in providing a “special outfit” to take a baby home from the hospital when your finan-cial situation prevents even this need. “Special outfits” are also provided for families who babies did not survive - still-born or illness. Bereavement clothing and keepsakes are provided for the family.
Marked Boxes are located in Ave Maria Church basement and St. Agnes Church vestibule. Your donations will be greatly appreciated. Also, information packets are available in both churches.
Once again, special thanks to the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Dolores who provided the delicious meal of chicken & biscuits for the sixth session of the Discovering Christ evangelization program this past week.

Passing on the Faith - Ave Maria / St. Agnes
As baptized Catholics it is our right, as well as our responsibility, to provide opportunities for the faithful of all ages to grow in wisdom and knowledge concerning our rich and inspiring Catholic faith tradi-tion. Recognizing that parents are the ‘first” teachers of their children, the Church nonetheless asserts that formal religious education programs are a “must” for our youth. In order for religious education to “work”, we need spirit-filled parishioners who have a funda-mental knowledge of our faith and our Church to be the teaching cate-chists for our programs. Anyone interested in teach-ing, helping as an aide, helping with Children’s Liturgy of the Word or helping with our Family Assemblies is asked to call Kathy Heino at the parish office at 724-239-3591.

Pastor’s Corner
Reverend Michael A. Zavage, Pastor St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and St. Joseph Parish
Director of Campus Ministry, California University of Pennsylvania
Our Catholic Faith is so rich that we need devotionals to help us express our love for the Church. A beautiful devotion that has been a part of our traditions is the Corpus
Christi Procession. On Sunday, June 7th, we will have a Eucharistic Procession from St. Thomas Aquinas Church to the Convocation Center at California University directly following the 10:30 am Mass. All Catholic Churches will celebrate the feast day, some will have Eucharistic Adoration, some will have an indoor procession, and only a few will have an outdoor procession. Our church is the only one in the area that will have a Eucharistic Procession through the main streets of California Borough.
Weather permitting, I will carry the Most Holy Eucharist under a baldacchino (processional tent) from the
church on Union Street, to Third Street, and the procession will end at the Convocation Center of California University of Pennsylvania. The distance of this procession is approximately 10 blocks and participants can stop at any point along the way. We will have a police escort and song sheets with Eucharistic hymns will be provided at this event. Our choir will lead us in song as we walk along and due to limited parking at California University, participants will need to walk back to their vehicles. We are inviting you to join us in this public devotion-al. This is a great way to celebrate our faith as Christians and be a public witness of Jesus to those in our neighborhood. While we as Catholic Christians are celebrating our belief in the True Presence of Jesus’ Body and Blood in the Eucharist, we are also inviting all of the other Christian churches in the area to join us in proclaiming our oneness as Christians united in Jesus Christ.
Parking in our church lot is limited, but you may park at any legal parking spot along the route and join in the procession as it passes. You will have to walk back to your vehicle after the procession commences with special blessings for everyone at the Convocation Center at the end of Third Street. Please join us as we publicly honor the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ and celebrate our Christian Faith.
A SIGNIFICANT DAY
“And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the en-tire house in which they were” (Acts 2:2). The Holy Spirit’s arrival on that first
Pentecost was signaled by a rush of wind. We all know what it’s like when our windows are open just as a summer storm rises up. Curtains fly, papers be-come airborne, house plants shudder, dust is scat-tered. A rush of wind disrupts the orderliness of our home. The coming of the Holy Spirit, as celebrated each year at Pentecost, can also disrupt ways that have become comfortable and orderly. The Church always needs Pentecost. We need the breath of God’s Spirit to blow away any complacency or malaise that has settled into our faith. Jesus breathes on his disciples and they receive the Holy Spirit. With that reception comes the power to share the Good News of salvation. Today, this is no less true for us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Importance of Sunday Mass - All Parishes
As the academic year draws to a conclusion and many people begin traveling on vacation, it is important for Catholics to ensure that appropriate plans are made to ensure that if the vacation days include Sundays of Holy Days of Obligation, that arrangements are made to participate in Mass at a nearby Catholic church. To aid you in your planning, visit the following website: www.masstimes.org or by telephone: 1-800-Mass-times. The internet and telephone option allows you to click on churches by country, by place/city, by postal zip code, or by the telephone area/exchange code ANYWHERE in the world. The web site provides worship time infor-mation and identifies the Mass schedule at Catholic churches, Eucharistic Exposition/Adoration, the available times for the Sacrament of Penance (confession), other particular Catholic devotions as well as services in lan-guages other than English. For each church, the listing of name, location, contact information, and web site/ email addresses (if applicable) are provided. You may click on the church web site to acquire the current infor-mation or telephone the particular church in the area you are visiting. Also, when traveling on vacation, kindly remember to make arrangements to ensure that your monetary offerings for your parish are dropped off or sent via U.S. mail to your parish administration center.

Weekly Offering Contributions - All Parishes
A reminder that if you are a registered parishioner at Ave Maria, Saint Agnes, Saint Thomas Aquinas or Saint Joseph Parish and attend a Mass that is convenient to your schedule during the weekend at another parish other than the one where you are registered, if you utilize the weekly offering envelope that you receive in the mail at your mailing address and deposit it in the collection basket, it will be recorded as a contribution at the parish you are currently registered as a parishioner. If you place loose change or loose cash in the collection basket, those monies will be collected by the parish at which you attended Mass and applied to that parish as there is no way that loose change and cash can be tracked.
