Year 1 Assignment 1 Observation of a Teacher
Assignment Overview
Teaching is a very individual activity. Most teachers develop their own style for delivering learning and find individual approaches to their learners. This assignment provides you with an opportunity to watch others at work, reflect on how they work and use the information to develop your own skills. You also need to show that you can relate your reading about teaching and learning to this whole process.
This assignment falls into two parts; the first part is to carry out the observation, recording and describing in note form what you observed and the details of the lesson you watched. Include these notes as an appendix to your assignment. The second part is an evaluation and reflection on the observed session; this is the main body of the assignment.

Assessment Criteria
In order to complete this assignment successfully, you must show that you have met all of the following criteria:
Subject Knowledge and Understanding
Recognise and identify key steps in the teaching and learning process Demonstrate understanding of some theories relating to teaching and learning.
(LSR1/2/3) Demonstrate an understanding of issues relating to inclusivity relevant to the observed
session. Demonstrate an understanding of how English, maths and/or ICT and employability skills can
be developed through core delivery.
Analysis and Application
Give a detailed analysis of the teaching and learning making clear what you saw as strengths and weaknesses in the teaching and learning process
Make clear links between what you have read about teaching and learning and what you observed.
As a direct result from your observation and analysis show how you could improve your practice in the classroom.

Year 1 Assignment 2 Case Study of a Learner
Assignment overview
For this assignment you will interview and initially assess a learner with the aim of informing future learning. The purpose of this is to enable you to discover how the previous learning experiences of your learner and his or her present life situation impacts on current skills and learning. You will need to speak at length with a learner about their previous learning in order to produce a critical reflection on the learner’s experience and to make recommendations about future learning.

Assignment Overview
Making effective use of assessment, in all its forms, is a key skill for teachers. This assignment will develop your understanding of the key principles of assessment and the range of assessment activities. It will also ensure that you have the opportunity to create an assessment activity relating to your teaching and to make the links between the practical assessment you have carried out and the theoretical principles of assessment.

Assignment Overview
Understanding the learning process is the most important skill a teacher should have. Theory and practice go hand in hand, so you need to show how you use your knowledge of the theories and principles of learning to understand, develop and inform your teaching. This assignment is focused on theories about teaching and learning, particularly in the FE and Skills Sector and requires you to make explicit the links you see between those theories and your own practice. You will need to read a range of different texts.

Year 2 Assignment 1 Economic and Political Influences in the FE and Skills Sector
Assignment Overview
For this assignment, you will be exploring changes in the sector and the effect these may have on the professional teacher and the learner. You will then share this information with your peers. In your taught sessions you will consider which recent Government initiatives (including policies, legislation, reports) relating to teaching and training in the FE and Skills Sector have had an impact on organisations and learners. You will select one of these topics to research and explore in more detail. You will both lead a seminar, and take part in other seminars, as well as writing a report.

Year 2 Assignment 2 Curriculum Design
Assignment Overview
There are three themes to this assignment: curriculum design, innovation and inclusivity. You are asked to devise an appropriate curriculum for a group of learners which promotes inclusivity and incorporates English, maths, ICT and wider employability skills, innovatively into your teaching. You will also need to make specific reference to theories relating to curriculum models or design.
The curriculum you design can be either an entirely new programme of study for a group of learners or you could choose part of an existing programme which you would like to alter, update or enhance in some way.
In promoting inclusivity you should show an awareness of ways in which learners may be disadvantaged in the classroom and aim to make your curriculum one which recognises the individual differences and needs of your existing or potential learners. Evidence of this may be seen in your learning materials, teaching approaches, use of differentiation and your active engagement with equality and diversity issues.
You will give a presentation to your peers on your new or adapted curriculum.

Assignment Overview
Reflective practice is an essential tool for developing and extending the skills needed to teach in a sector which has to be responsive to change. You have practised thinking in a reflective way throughout your course. This assignment requires you to draw together aspects of reflection and self-evaluation from your Professional Development Portfolio, with new research into various models of reflective practice, to complete a summative statement at the end of your teacher training programme.

Year 2 Assignment 4 Action Research
Assignment Overview
You are asked to carry out an Action Research project on a topic which you choose yourself (but must be approved by your tutor). It must feature the planning and implementation of a clear intervention strategy (you may want to link this assignment to Assignment 2 Curriculum Design by implementing the curriculum you designed).
Your assignment should be presented as a structured report using appropriate headings.
You should choose a topic which is of interest to you and of relevance to your teaching and learning context. You will need to plan ahead and adhere to timescales, particularly as the nature of your research is a classroom-based intervention and will involve learners. Keep your tutor up-to-date with the progress of your work so that you can get early advice on the best way to plan and carry out your research. Early on you will draw up an Action Research Plan which you will need to discuss with your tutor.
