International Speaker Dr Rob Jonquiere Visits Wanganui

Over 85% of Dutch people now support Voluntary Euthanasia (VE). Yet opponents quote the Netherlands experience as evidence against the practice. The opportunity now presents itself to hear from a medical doctor who has been involved in the practice and monitoring of the assisted dying law in the Netherlands for many years.

As part of a New Zealand tour, Dr Rob Jonquiere is to speak at a public meeting in Wanganui at 2pm on Sunday 1st March 2015 at The Grand Hotel, Corner Guyton and St Hill Streets, Wanganui.

As a Family Doctor in the Netherlands his duties included looking after dying patients. As a consequence of that he trained himself in the necessary skills and attitudes of palliative care by attending a workshop with Dame Cecily Saunders of St Christopher’s Hospice in London. He became involved in requests for “help” when patients could not stand their suffering any longer, because they considered their life at that moment no longer “worth living” and because they were afraid of a non-dignified final hour.

Dr Jonquière graduated in medicine from Leiden University. He was a family doctor until 1985. He was Head of vocational training for General Practitioners in Amsterdam and Leiden from 1985-1995. From 1995 -1999 he was Chief Manager of the Mental Health Department for the Elderly in Leiden. From 1999 – 2009 he was Chairman of the Dutch Right to Die Association (NVVE). In this way he contributed to legalisation and helped make it more possible for patients to ask their doctors for assistance in dying. He has been involved in many presentations on the Dutch experience(s) with groups all around the world.

He is now Chairman of the Registration and Education of SCEN doctors (the legally required second doctor for VE cases). He is also currently Communications Director of the World Federation of the Right to Die Society.

This is a great opportunity to hear the genuine facts from an expert with years of experience and a great knowledge of assisted dying across many countries.

Patea Night PatrolThere has been some talk on social media recently about the need for a night patrol in

Patea. There used to be night patrol here, loosely associated with the Business Association, with the roster organised by one of the members. Night Patrol has been running again for the last few months, at the request of some locals and with the support of the Patea Community Board and Patea Police.

Volunteers go out one night per month each, for a couple of hours. Their job is to keep an eye on what is happening and report any problems to the Police – it is not their role to deal with problems directly, although talking politely to the youth is fine. This information helps the Police keep an eye on patterns of behaviour.

If you are interested in volunteering you need to have one night a month spare, a car or bike, and be a responsible adult. The Police are supplied with the name and contact information for all volunteers, and a copy of the monthly roster. A Christian WordI read a quote on Facebook which said “Buddha was not a Buddhist, Jesus was not a Christian, Mohammed was not a

Muslim, they were teachers of love”. Th e only thing I can agree upon is that they were all men! But it stops there! Why?Because Jesus was not only human, He was also divine. Th e words Jesus spoke/taught were life, they were not and should

not be, a template to follow and woe betide anyone who didn’t! His teachings were primarily for our future to begin today!Love is purely who God the Father is – we cannot manufacture love that can overlook other people’s shortcomings or sins,

if we have a love built upon our own experiences through life and therefore we will determine whom we shall give it to and we will take it back on whatever grounds we choose under whatever exceptions! Love that comes from God is pure, Corinthians 1 chapter 13 v 4-7 tells us (do read this) but the teachings of Jesus tells us how we can be saved. First we have to repent and be baptised every one of you, (Peter’s fi rst sermon!), this teaching of Jesus is still applicable today, as it was over 2000 years ago. H

e never said if you do good things or paid a signifi cant amount of money you would be saved. No! It was based upon God’s great and signifi cant mercy to you and not your eff ort. As the Bible says, “it is by grace you are saved, not by works so that no man may boast”. Jesus was showing us the way to enter into our rightful inheritance that is ours to just ask for, a beautiful indication of God’s love for us even though we are sinners! Nobody else who has ever walked this earth can give you this, this promise of love can only come from God Almighty! Nobody else!

All those previous men, and including everybody else on this earth, are born sinners! Th e only exception was Jesus! It is at this point that Jesus becomes separate from humanity and therefore became the ultimate human sacrifi ce for our sins. God shows his love to us all in this way by allowing Jesus to be sacrifi ced so that all mankind now has an easy path back to the Father (God).

Jesus is more than a man / teacher, He is part of the Divine God head and we would do well to not only remember this, because He is seated above all things on this earth, above it and below it as well – victoriously! But to take hold of this promise while we have the opportunity to do so. One day (and only God knows which one) Jesus is coming back to reign here on earth – best we get our house in order before then!

Come Lord Jesus! Ted Reeves, Patea

Th e Museum has been a hive of activity in the last month or so, with fun craft events for the kids, some interesting research inquires, and installation of a new temporary exhibition.

Th e Portrait Show: Capturing Gender Th rough Portraiture. In common use, the word gender may refer to biological sex, self-identity, perceived identity, or imposed identity. Gender can be both fl uid and ambiguous. Many of the ways we express and identify gender are based on visual clues. Aotea Utanganui is proud to present this exhibition which explores ways gender has been presented in photographs, ranging from archetypal to non-traditional to subversive representations, with an emphasis on the performances that photography can encourage or capture.

Inspired by a similar exhibition, Th e Gender Show, at George Eastman House International Photography & Film Museum in Rochester, New York, this exhibition spans over 100 years of photography and enables viewers to thoughtfully examine our changing cultural and social landscape, in which evolving ideas of gender portraiture are framed as photographic images.

Th e Portrait Show: Capturing Gender Th rough Portraiture off ers the opportunity to view historical portraiture from our collection in a reinvigorated context.

If you would like to see this new exhibition, along with our permanent displays, and Port-able in the temporary gallery, we are open 10am-4pm Monday to Saturday.

We have two family events for the kids, and their parents or caregivers, during January – if you are looking for something diff erent to do during the holidays we’d love to see you. A Conversation between Lauren Aiken and Caitlin Currie

School leaders 2014

Caitlin: Hi I’m Caitlin Currie.Lauren: and I’m Lauren Aiken and we are the Waverley school leaders. C: Lauren, what do you remember about your fi rst day at Waverley Primary School?L: It was a very exciting day for me Caitlin! My brother was already at this school and I was so excited to walk through the school gates and make new friends and that’s just what I did! And you?C: I remember being really confi dent and saying that my Mum could go as soon as we were through the school gates!! Which teachers will you remember fondly from Waverley?L: Th is is a hard one as all my teachers have helped me achieve my goals and they all have great standards. Th ey’re all diff erent in their own way but a “stand out” would have to be Mr. Priest. We all enjoyed his “spooky stories”... How about you Caitlin, who did you enjoy the most?C: I can’t really choose just one or two – I enjoyed all my time with every teacher I was with as they all brought something special to the classroom! Did you have any really funny times that stick out for you Lauren?L: One cracker was when we went to young leaders conference last year in Palmerston North. We were in the mini van and Mr Caff ell decided we should park in this carpark. But he hadn’t realised there were height restrictions and the van ended up getting stuck. With the help of Seth and JayKay we got unstuck and found another parking spot! What about you Caitlin – can you think of any funny times?C: My funniest moment would have been when Mr Priest said “Ya bo” and “Spooky” to us for the fi rst time when we were in his class. We all laughed our heads off . So what were your highlights over the last 8 years at school?L: A few would have been going to school camps and trips! I really enjoyed the recent year 8 Wellington camp. It was also exciting riding for the school equestrian team at the interschool competition over the past 2 years. But being awarded school leader was a huge highlight as that meant taking responsibility and having the opportunity to care for everyone and everything at school. What about you Caitlin? What were your highlights?C: I have had a great many highlights but my favourite would certainly be being awarded the school leader position and attending the National Young Leaders day

with Mr Caff ell, some parents and all of the other leaders from our classroom. So now that our time at Waverley is over, what are you doing next year and what do you hope to be when you fi nish college?L: Next year I’m off to Nga Tawa, a girls’ only boarding school and because it off ers a range of equestrian subjects, I hope to succeed in something equestrian or become a veterinarian as I have a passion for animals. What about you? What will you be up to?C: I am going to High School and will be taking part in their production of “Annie” and I’ll be involved in many other fun things. And like you, I hope to be a veterinarian when I fi nish college. So is there anything else you would like to say Lauren?L: I would like to say a huge thank you to the staff at Waverley Primary for helping me to get where I am today! I would like to give a big “thank-you” to all my friends who have been amazing through the ups and downs. I am going to miss everyone sooo much but I have a lot of memories to cherish! Good luck to everyone for next year – especially those picking up leadership roles. If you’re given that opportunity – take it with both hands. Lastly a big thank you to my family, as I wouldn’t be here without their love and support. What would you like to fi nish by saying Caitlin?C: I would like to say a big “thank-you” to all the teachers for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, my parents for being with me along the way, my friends for sticking with me through everything and lastly a “thank-you” for giving me the chance to be leader for our school!

Patea KindergartenWhat a wonderful year we have had here at Patea Kindergarten! We have welcomed a lot of new families to the Kindergarten over the year and it is always

as exciting getting to know a new child. It is so rewarding to see the sometimes shy three year olds blossom and develop into happy, confi dent fi ve year olds ready for school!

We have had a lot of fun activities at Patea Kindergarten this year, a visit from Zappo the Magician, Wacky Wednesday, Funky Friday and Wacky Hair Day to name a few!

Th e children have spent a lot of time in our wonderful garden, helping to plant and harvest vegetables and berries. Th ey oft en get to bring vegetables home or even an egg laid by our Kindergarten chooks! Th ank you Kere, for spending many hours in the garden with the children.

On the 24th of November we had an International Luncheon where parents and caregivers were invited to come along and share some Kai. We had a great turnout and there was a yummy selection of food from diff erent parts of the world.

In Term four Carol from Sports Taranaki came as part of the “Let’s get Going Program”, which is a cycle skills program. For fi ve weeks our older children learnt about bike safety, bike care and balance development. It was great to see that some of the children even learnt to ride a bike by themselves for the fi rst time during this program!

We recently had a visit from Santa who called in to give the children a gift . We had a great turnout of families who shared some lunch together. On the 12 of December the Kindergarten

took part in the Patea Christmas Parade. Th is year we had an International theme with the children dressed up in national costumes. Th ank you to everyone that helped and to the children who came on the fl oat. You all looked great and had lots of fun, and to top it off we got 2nd prize!

Hooper’s Engineering has very kindly made and donated a “monkey bar” for the children to swing on. With the constant restraints in government funding we are relying on the support of the community and our local businesses and we thank you all for your ongoing support!

Finally we would like to thank our hardworking Committee. In November they organised a very successful Casino

Summer is a great time of year when we can all really enjoy the warmth of the sun and make the most of the great outdoors. However our southern hemisphere sunshine is very intense and we need to remember that as well as enjoying the sunshine we also need to protect our skin. If we get too much sun without protecting our skin it can lead to sunburn and also puts us at risk of developing skin cancers. The good news is you can be safe and SunSmart this summer. “The best SunSmart advice”, say Self Care pharmacists, is to follow the five SunSmart steps “Slip, Slop, Slap, Wrap and Stay.” • Slip – into a shirt with collar and sleeves• Slop – on some sunscreen • Slap – on a hat with a wide-brim or a cap with flaps• Wrap – on a pair of sunglasses (close-fitting, wrap-around, ones). UV radiation is just as dangerous to eyesight as it is for the skin• Stay in the shade for protection

Sunburn can happen very quickly and the skin can turn red and be tender or hurt to touch. It can be very uncomfortable getting sun burnt and in more severe cases swelling and blisters can develop. Extreme sunburn can have symptoms of fever, chills, nausea and vomiting and hospital care may be needed. We should do all that we can to avoid these situations. The sun burns our skin and over time causes permanent damage through skin ageing. “We all know getting sun burnt is bad, but most people still think a tan is okay. The reality is that tanned skin is damaged skin.

Did you know that it isn’t necessary to have a very sunny or hot day to become sun burnt? Sunburn can still happen on cooler, cloudy and overcast days The Sun Protection Alert can help you here as it tells you the exact time each day when you should use sun protection no matter where you are in New Zealand. This can be found in the MetService and Sunsmart websites, your daily paper on the weather page, or on TV3 weather. NIWA also measures the intensity of UV radiation and this is known as the UV index or UVI. At nighttime the UVI is zero. During the day when UVI goes above 3 then sun protection is needed.

How much sunscreen do I need to use? Self Care Pharmacists will recommend at least one teaspoon for each arm and leg and half a teaspoon for your face, nose, ears and neck. More people get sunburned on their face and neck than any other part of the body, so apply well in these areas and don’t forget the ears!

Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going outdoors and re-apply often (every 2 to 3 hours). This needs to be done even if it isn’t sunny, as the sunscreen gets worn off, or rubbed off and comes off after swimming. Sunscreen is recommended for everyone to use, for all skin types. Self Care pharmacists are able to advise on the sunscreen product that is the most suitable for you and your family.

Look after your sunscreens. Just like our skin, sunscreens ‘age’ in the sun and heat, and their UV-protecting properties can be destroyed. So don’t leave them in the sun, or in the car’s glove box for too long. Also, don’t keep them past their ‘use by’ dates as they do lose their effectiveness.

Your Self Care pharmacist can provide you with a lot more SunSmart information and the right type of sunscreen for everyone. Pick up the new Sun Safety and Skin Cancer Self Care fact card.

Be Safe, Be Sunsmart This Summer

Remember key messages to stay safe on the road this summer

Brake, the road safety charity, is calling on New Zealand drivers to pledge to give the road

their full attention and not to take risks if heading away over the holiday period. With the road toll for 2014 already standing at 278, and many of us heading away for

Christmas and the school holidays, Brake is urging drivers to do everything they can to keep themselves and other road users safe by remembering the key road safety messages of Brake’s Pledge. Slow: Drive within speed limits, drive at 30km/h or lower in communities, and slow down on rural roads too. Avoid overtaking unless you’re sure it’s safe.Sober: If driving, don’t drink any alcohol, or take any illegal drugs or medication that could affect driving.Sharp: Drive alert – not tired, ill or stressed. Get a good night’s sleep before driving and take breaks every two hours. Have an eye test at least every two years and wear glasses or contact lenses if needed.Silent: Phone off or on message service. Minimise other distractions such as sat nav/GPS and tuning the radio as much as possible.Secure: Always belt up and insist that everyone else in the vehicle does the same and adjusts head restraints. If travelling with children, ensure you have correctly fitted, appropriate child restraints. Ensure your vehicle is well-maintained and serviced.Sustainable: Only drive when you have to.

Caroline Perry, Brake’s New Zealand director said: “The holiday season is particularly risky because families may be driving long distances, risking fatigue and speed in order to get somewhere quickly. But the outcome can be that you don’t get there at all. Slow down, take it easy, take regular breaks, and stay alive. We are also calling on families to take particular care to protect children from reversing vehicles in their driveways by ensuring children are kept well away. The holiday season can mean lots of visitors to your home and children need to be protected.”
