You’ve seen her hit show It’s Me or the Dog on Animal Planet. On October 10, 7-9:30 at Mason Murer Art Gallery in Buckhead you can join Victoria Stilwell for an evening of behind the show stories, dog training tips and tales about bad owners. All of the proceeds from this evening will benefit PAWS Atlanta.

For the past two years Victoria Stilwell has helped train some of the dogs at PAWS Atlanta. She was also instrumental in establish-ing the temperament tests that we utilize with every dog upon intake. Just like her teaching methods on television she made certain that we adhered to 100% positive reinforcement when it comes to training the dogs.

Victoria Stilwell will share exploits about her many years in taping one of television’s most popular and talked about shows.

For the past year PAWS Atlanta has been the Dekalb County distribution point for the Save Our Pets Food Bank. All of the food donated from the Victoria Stillwell event will go toward SOPFB. This is a pet food bank for owners who are having dif-ficulty paying for cat or dog food. By allowing them to feed their pet it can help decrease the number of strays or animals that are turned in to shelters or animal control.

Emory Group That Volunteers

Girl Scouts Love Paws Atlanta!

Every Thursday, for the past year and a half a group of students from Emory have put studying on hold to come out to PAWS Atlanta. The group has ranged from 8 to 20 students and always comes to volunteer with the right attitude. They’re flexible, enthusiastic and are here to do what needs to be done. Some weeks the shelter wouldn’t have any pressing needs and the group would walk most of the dogs. However on some weeks they helped clean the food shed, move cages or landscape.

This particular group of Emory students is just one example of folks that volunteer at PAWS Atlanta. Everyday we’ve got individuals who come out here to walk dogs, socialize the cats or clean cages. Every volunteer at PAWS Atlanta is appreciated. If you’ve been through orientation and haven’t been out in a while come see us this weekend.

The PAWS Atlanta volunteer orientation is the 2nd Sunday and 4th Saturday of every month at 1:00. For complete details on volunteering just check out our website www.pawsatlanta.org and visit the “Volun-teering” section.

Become a PET PAL and have your very own “online” pet. You can select an animal by visiting the Adoption Center or looking through the current photos on our website. Just $20 per month, helps provide for the care of one of the PAWS Atlanta animals while he or she waits for a permanent loving home. You will receive acknowledgement as a Pet Pal on our website; you can even come by the shelter and visit! If the pet is adopted during the time frame you are sponsoring him or her, we will let you know so you can select a new Pet Pal.

We post internet only specials and updates on Twitter! There’s a Linkedin group, just search for PAWS Atlanta when you’re there.

Charity NavigatorWhen I donate to a non profit organization I want to be certain the organiza-tion is going to spend my money wisely and respon-sibly. Their fundraising expenses should be low, the administrative expenses

should be reasonable and the bulk of the donation should go to their programs.

We agree, and so does Charity Navigator. For the fourth time in five years PAWS Atlanta has been awarded a Four Star rating from Charity Naviga-tor. Charity Navigator is the nation’s premiere charity evaluator, thoroughly analyzing every financial aspect of an organization. They rank non-profits from a one to four star ranking, with only 25% of all organi-

zations earning a Four Star rating. Based on their reputation for due diligence, Charity Navigator has helped educate donors who have given more than $10 billion to non profits.

PAWS Atlanta can always use your support and we encourage any donor to compare us against other organizations. It’s a challenging time and we recognize that. However, to the thousands of animals that rely on PAWS Atlanta it’s just another day and they’re just looking for a home.

Be confident that the majority of your financial dona-tions go towards caring for homeless animals, rather than administration costs. PAWS Atlanta only exists off of the donations from the public, with no support from the state or government.

• Girl Scout Junior Troop 24251 recently paid a visit to PAWS Atlanta. They collected pounds of newspaper, made some cat toys and spread some love (see page 2).

• A couple of months ago PAWS Atlanta received a very heartwarming letter that was attached to a check (right).

GOOD NEWS!

• Rascal had been in and out of homes, but now he has a forever

family that is absolutely smitten with him. Rascal was found trying to

cross a busy street and quickly showed his appreciation to the staff at PAWS Atlanta. Here are some shots of Rascal and his new family, the Daeglings (left).

How unaltered cats and dogs can add up:

Spay or neuter your pet and lets fix em all! Your pet is already fixed? You can become a Pet Pal (see pg 2) virtually sponsoring

one of us who is already fixed and waiting for adoption!

Even the most ardent greenie will admit that pets are a needed, productive and helpful aspect to human life. Your pet is not bad for the environment, but they do consume resources and leave behind evidence. There are things that you can do to minimize waste in every area of your life and these eco friendly pet tips are just a start.

For you cat owners it pays to be curious and figure out the best way to lower your carbon paw print. Cat litter is one of the biggest expenses towards living with your cat and it also produces the most waste. The two common ways to deal with cat litter are to flush it down the toilet or scoop it into the garbage.

If you have the flushable kind you need to be aware that cat waste contains Toxoplasmosis, a parasite that enters cats after they eat small birds or mammals. That parasite exits our cats with their waste but can live in their excrement for up to one year. Have you ever heard that pregnant women shouldn’t handle cat litter? Toxoplasmosis is the reason why, much to the chagrin of husbands around the world.

The other thing to consider with flushable litter is how it affects your plumbing. If your plumbing system is old then flushing cat litter may weaken your pipes even quicker. Also if you’re on a septic plumbing system you should flush cat litter.

The kind of cat litter that you scoop and throw away is made by strip mining, or scrapping off a top layer of earth in order to get to the clay. There is a special type of clay called bentonite that clumps when it’s exposed to moisture. Over time crystals have entered cat litter as a means to enhance its odor fighting abilities. It’s estimated that over 160,000 tons of scoopable cat litter is deposited in our landfills each year.

There is also a misconception that you can dispose of cat litter in your back yard or garden. How-ever, this will attract any stray cats and make fruits or vegetables unhealthy for you.

That’s a handful of news about how cats affect the environment, here are some ways you can help.

• Use biodegradable bags when you scoop cat litter.

• Use shredded newspapers instead of cat litter. You can augment that with grass clippings or sprinkle some baking soda too.

• Research more environmentally friendly cat litter. There are dozens of products out there that do not contain bentonite.

• Keep your cat inside.

• Train your cat to use the toilet. It’s surprisingly easy, just Goodsearch, “cat using a toilet”.

• Spay or neuter your pet! Reproduction and animal overpopulation is the worst thing that you can do regarding the environment and your pet.

• Don’t get a pet from a breeder.

How Green is My Cat?

At least once a month PAWS Atlanta will have a discounted vaccination clinic. You can get all your dog shots for $45 and cat shots for $40. No appointment needed, but it can get busy so come early. Check the website for the next clinic date!

Volunteers NeededPAWS Atlanta needs volunteers for a variety of tasks, dog walking, cat comfort, offsite events and adop-tions. Please check the website under Volunteer to learn more!

Fortunately for the dogs their carbon paw print has more toys, clothing and fun stuff.

The one thing that they do have in common is their waste, however, for our dogs it’s easier to mitigate any envi-ronmental impact. The myth behind dog poo is that it’s natural, so it’s ok to leave it behind in the yard. Alas, that is not true, aside from the mess that you step in, the run off will go to your storm drain. The simple solution is to pick it up and from there you have many choices where to put the waste.

• Compost. Get a doggie waste composter that is to be used only for dog waste. Once it’s thoroughly com-posted use it on trees & shrubs.

• Get a biodegradable bag and flush it — bag and all!

• Bag it and throw away the poo in your toilet.

• Bag it and throw away the bag.

There are many organic and eco friendly ways to supply your best friend with everything that they need. Eco friendly dog beds consist of textiles that aren’t chemically treated or recycled materials like plastic and nylon. You can also find collars, leashes or dog clothing made from hemp or recycled cotton.

If you have used dog supplies that your pet doesn’t need, but are still in good condition, donate them to a local animal shelter. Sure the dog house may be a bit scratched up, but they can probably use it. You can also try websites like www.freecycle.com or www.craigslist.com and give the items away there.

Thanks to all the new members that joined recently and big thanks to those that are con-tinuing their support of PAWS Atlanta. It is because of your unwavering support of PAWS Atlanta that we’ve been able to find homes for thousands of animals. Additionally, our clinic is on schedule to alter 1400 animals this year, with the goal of 3000 surgeries in 2008. Increasing the number of spays/neuters is crucial towards easing the suffering of thousands of pets, as well as, decreasing pet overpopulation.
