There have been a lot of changes in the GIS Service Bureau in the past year with more exciting things to look forward to. A year ago as part of Palm Beach County’s IT consolidation, the GIS Service Bureau went from a fulltime staff of 4 to a staff of 10. PZB, Eng and Public Safety GIS staff joined the GIS Service Bureau and now I work full time for the Service Bureau after having been their spatial DBA for 14 years. And in June Kelly Ratchinsky received a well-deserved promotion to Director of our Platform Services Division.

What were you doing in 1993? Who was doing GIS in 1993? Who was at the SF GIS Expo in 1993? In Palm Beach County we had islands of GIS None of us were connected We all managed out own data to meet our needs We had 2 people doing Countywide GIS Coordination in ISS And no GIS Service Bureau

From the 1995 needs assessment 21 different agencies used municipal boundaries 11 used land use 18 used canals 23 used roads Some used the engineering road file, others tried to use tiger or etak road files There were no standards and no coordination of updates

1995 We received the first element of our countywide basemap, the digital orthophotos and the GIS Policy Advisory Committee (GISPAC) and Project Management Team were formed 1997 The digital parcel map became available 1998 the Operational Data Model was delivered recommending Oracle Spatial as our GIS database solution 1999 Kelly was hired as the Countywide GIS Coordinator and Acting GIS Service Bureau Manager. Kelly was the project manager for the Operational Data Model and our first Intranet mapping application, GeoNav 2003 The Enterprise Addressing Plan Design was published
