Outcomes
• • plan and participate in professional presentations in groups, using PowerPoint.
Why presentations? • usually brief discussions of a focused topic • to an audience in order • to share knowledge and • encourage a discussion. Making a good oral presentation is an art that involves attention to the needs of your audience, careful planning and attention to delivery
Features of Oral Presentation These are the features used in the presentation itself. Using different features how to do the presentation: • hands, • body, • specific words, • material,
Content Structure Know who forms your audience. Some basic questions to ask about an audience are: • Who will I be speaking to? • What do they know about my topic already? • What will they want to know about my topic? • What do I want them to know by the end of my talk?
Tips on content & structure A good introduction does four things; it: • attracts and focuses the attention of the audience. • puts the speaker and audience at ease. • explains the purpose of the talk and what the speaker would like to achieve. • gives an overview of the key points of the talk.
Tips Body • presented in a logical order to enable the audience to
follow • divide your content into sections • good idea to pause between main sections of your talk • examples, details and visual aids add interest to a
presentation and help you get your message across.
Tips Conclusion A good conclusion does two things; it: • reminds the audience of your key points • reinforces your message. Your conclusion should end the presentation on a positive note. Don’t be scared of answering questions, it shows the audience had listened to you.
Delivering your Presentation People vary in their ability to speak confidently in public and almost everyone gets nervous. Voice quality involves attention to • volume, • speed and fluency, • clarity and • pronunciation

Tips on PPT Benefits: • reinforce a point you have made • show what something looks like • illustrate relationships • show information patterns • present figures or graphs • summarise key points • help the audience follow passages or quotations that you read aloud.
Tips: Design Some basic rules are: • use large fonts and images • present one key point or example per PPS • use headings and bullet points in preference to lines of text • use strong, legible colours and don't use too many • use simple graphs in preference to tables of figures • pay attention to layout. Use the centre of the PPS rather than the edges.
