Disappearing Water Demo

1. Get three identical paper cups and a babies nappy. Cut out a disc of

nappy to fit in the base one of the cups. Make sure the outside of the

nappy is to the base of the cup. Stick with doubled-over tape.

2. Work out in advance how much water the disc of nappy can absorb and

how long it takes.

Sodium Polyacrylate is a white

powder in mixed in with the cotton

wool in nappies. It is a Super

Absorbent Polymer and can absorb

200-300 times own weight in water.

Suggested trigger questions: Let’s look at the evidence. Did everyone see the water

going into the cup? Did anyone see the water coming out of the cup? If a woman

goes into a house and no one sees her come out, where might she still be? What

might hold water in an upside down cup? What word beginning with ‘A’ is used to

describe things that suck up water?

Help develop children’s science knowledge

and understanding

Help children to develop scientific skills

Help children develop skills in making things

Help children develop positive attitudes to science

Working Scientifically

Science is about finding answers to questions.

“I wonder what would happen if....?”

“I wonder how could we...?”

I wonder what would we need to do to...?”

“I wonder what is the difference between...?”

“How do we know that...?”

“I wonder would it make any difference if...?”

What ideas does

your team have

about how we could

move Fred and his

little vehicle?

Page 14: PDST Primary Science Training - Home - Scoilnet · People have their own plant like green skin, so that they can create their own food in sunlight. Living Things Thinking, Doing,

To move things you need to give them either a

push or a pull which in science we call a force

Lots of different ways to push and pull (to apply forces)

Push or pull with your hand or something else

(Could be a push from something you can’t see like wind)

Weird pushes and pulls (forces) where nothing is

touching you - like magnetic forces, and the pull

from the very planet under our feet (gravity).

Úna Leader, June 2016

Forces – It is all about moving things

Living Things – Growing Seeds

Úna Leader, June 2016

What is a seed?

Look closely at the different seeds. Are

there any similarities or differences?

Can you think of any other types of seed?

What do you think might happen when

you add water to the seed?

What do plants need to grow?

Which seeds do you think might grow the

quickest? Why?

Does your group

know any interesting

facts about magnets?

Take two magnets

and see what

discoveries your

about magnets?

What is going on?

Put a magnet on top of something

that floats, in a dish of water.

Watch the magnet move around

until it stops moving.

Turn magnet around, watch again.

Do you notice anything?

Why do you think this might be

happening?

Magnets

Úna Leader, June 2016

Magnets are actually

grey in colour.

Often the red and blue

on school magnets is

coloured plastic in a

sort of cover.

Break open the plastic

cover and you see the

grey magnet inside.

Has anyone had any new ideas

since we made our predictions?

Has anyone changed their minds?

If so, why?

What did you think of, that caused

you to change your mind?

When did you think of that?

Can you think why you got the

idea?
