Muscatine Ranks in the Top 100 in POLICOM Economic Strength Rankings

The Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry is a catalyst for advancing our region’s economy, improving our quality of life and enhancing our members’ success

New economic strength rankings released by POLICOM Corporation in June of 2014 ranked Muscatine among the top 15 percent of micropolitan areas nationwide, placing the city 68th among 536 micropolitan areas.

Muscatine’s POLICOM ranking has been on a positive track over the last decade. POLICOM specializes in studying the dynamics of local communities and state economies. From its research it determines if an economy is growing or declining and what is causing this to happen. The economic strength rankings are created to study the characteristics of strong and weak economies. The highest ranked areas have had rapid, consistent growth in both size and quality for an extended period of time. The lowest ranked areas have been in volatile decline for an extended period of time.

Micropolitan Statistical Areas

Once looked upon as quasi rural areas, a Micropolitan Statistical Area must have an urbanized area (city) with a population of at least 10,000 but fewer than 50,000 and must be at least one county. There are now 536 micropolitan areas, 40 fewer than in 2013. As a result of re-defining statistical areas by the federal government

in 2013, 23 former micropolitan areas became metropolitan areas.

Methodology for Economic Strength Rankings

To create the rankings, POLICOM takes into account 23 different economic factors over a 20-year period. The formulas used to determine economic strength measure how the economy has behaved, not what caused it to perform. Three different data sectors are used to create the ranking. Group 1 sectors reflect the overall growth in size and quality. The quality of the economy is based upon what people earn.

The sectors in Group 2 reflect how the economy is behaving. Small businesses and the construction and retail industries are extremely reactive, and typically grow or decline in direct proportion to the condition of the economy. Group 3 contains negative sectors, and growth in these reflects a poor economy, areas such as per capita income support and per capita medical assistance.

Muscatine has a powerful and diverse economy. The POLICOM Rankings show what we already know. This is a great community in which to live, work and grow, and we look forward to seeing it become even better.

The Muscatine History and Industry Center hosted a Throw-Back-Thursday inspired Business After-Hours on Thursday, June 12, at the museum’s location at 117 E. 2nd St., Muscatine. Guests enjoyed an old fashioned mussel boil inspired by Muscatine’s Pearl Button history while networking with old friends and new ones. Over 50 members attended the evening’s festivities, and there was plenty for attendees to see and do. Visit Muscatine Magazine, Muscatine Arboretum, Pine Creek Grist Mill, and Weed Park Zoo Garden had different areas where guests could visit and gain more information about the various organizations. Guests also enjoyed the opportunity to browse the expanded gift shop containing Muscatine merchandise and beautiful hand-made items from local artists.

The door prizes of the evening were drawn in a unique way- members had to participate in order to have a chance to win. Upon arrival, members were encouraged to visit the postcard writing station. At this station attendees wrote a postcard to someone they knew from out of town to encourage them to visit Muscatine. Completed postcards were put into a basket to be drawn for the door prizes! The door prizes given were two t-shirts from the Muscatine History and Industry Center’s gift shop. The winners were Misty Carver and Holly Thomas-Koehler. Way to go! There was also a drawing for $100 Chamber Dollar$ and all it took to participate in the drawing was to buy a raffle ticket for “Sparky”! The winner of the Chamber Dollar$ drawing was Ed Spellman. Congrats Ed! Ed’s ticket will be re-entered into the main drawing for the 2014 Chevy Spark, to be drawn on July 4.

Next month’s Business After-Hours will be co-hosted by Rebuilding Together Muscatine County and Crossroads, Inc., located at 1424/1424B Houser Street, on Thursday, July 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. See you there!

Local SCORE Chapter Updates

Popular SCORE Online Workshops When Social Goes Local Listen anytime! Using Social Media to Grow Your Business with SCORE and HP Listen anytime! Savvy Social Media with Jeanne Rossomme Listen anytime!

Robbin Block has been evangelizing the benefits of marketing strategy for over 25 years. Part geek, part creative, she’s brought her in-depth knowledge of the Web and its strategic application to business to companies of all sizes and to thousands of readers via her book, Social Persuasion: Making Sense of Social Media for Small Business. This month, Robbin discusses some of social media’s many implications on the crafting and execution of winning small business marketing plans.

What’s the biggest misperception about social media’s role in marketing, and what should entrepreneurs really be doing as they map out a new small business?

Social media can’t solve all your marketing problems. For a business, it needs to be thought of like any other communication tool. You need to understand the fundamentals of marketing — who’s your target audience, where do they get their information, what do they care about, etc.— to find the right media mix that makes sense for you.

What is the most underutilized non-social media marketing method today?

By far, it’s public relations. Many people are afraid of it, or don’t know what it is. Instead they’ll spend money on poorly placed ads that will almost always fail.

What are two or three go-to resources for finding data about your market?

The U.S. Census. A lot of valuable information from the latest census is now being released. Industry associations. Industry trade publications and consumer magazines. Their media kits have great

information about their readers’ demographics and interests.

And many more resources are available at my website, www.blockbeta.com.

Coupons are gaining popularity as a means for luring potential customers. If this option appears right for a small business, what is needed to help turn coupon users into regular customers?

Understand what attracted them in the first place. People who just want a deal are tough to convert. But many customers use coupons to “sample the goods.” To get them to come back and pay full price, use strategic messaging at each touchpoint to help push them down the purchase path. This messaging can be done verbally, through printed materials, online, and even reinforced with “gifts”.

Can you provide an example of how this works?

A Pilates studio I work with has used social coupons to bring in new customers, offering a 7-week program at a discounted rate. Each week, the studio reinforces the benefits of membership and the results the customer would get if they continue taking their classes. Communications include a comprehensive orientation, an introductory gift of a branded water bottle, follow-on emails, etc. It’s a planned program designed to positively reinforce the customer experience. This in combination with excellent service may be enough to convince the customer to continue at full price.

Expert Tips: Beyond Social Media

with Robbin Block: Owner, Blockbeta Marketing

Robbin Block Seattle, WA www.blockbeta.com [email protected]

Why should entrepreneurs work with a SCORE small business mentor to develop and monitor their marketing plans?

Marketing needs to be flexible, because the environment within which a business operates is always changing. And the business itself is evolving as new opportunities or threats come to light. A SCORE mentor can help filter the information and focus the entrepreneur on what’s important.

As I sit here writing the article for the July Chamber newsletter (can you believe it? July), we pass the half-way point of 2014. The mid-point of the year serves as an excellent time for review of

the past and the future.

The SCORE group has welcomed Victor Oyervides to our group. Welcome, Victor. Actually, I had the opportunity to speak to one of Victor’s groups last fall. I am sure

we will find his wisdom and experience valuable in helping the SCORE clients.

SCORE was mentioned several times in the advertisements run in the Muscatine Journal by the MCC Entrepreneurial Center.

I believe Jerry and Mel attended a state-wide SCORE meeting in Des Moines. No doubt there are groups across the state who are interested in one thing and one thing only, to help the individual with

an idea. Taking the idea from concept to implementation can be a challenge. The SCORE counselors bring with them the broad experience that includes: operations, accounting, sales, marketing, and human resources. When you have a question, we are here to help. Enjoy the Iowa summer!

Muscatine Radiology, located in the Muscatine Medical Center, is an independent radiology clinic that is privately owned by a group of eight radiologists from the Iowa City area. The owners started to see more patients from Muscatine and surrounding areas traveling to the Iowa City area to receive radiology services and realizing there was a need, decided to expand to the Muscatine area, opening Muscatine Radiology in 2006. The staff is made up of fellowship trained, sub-specialized radiologists, one of which is always on site, and four Board Certified, tenured technologists with over 55 years combined experience.

Muscatine Radiology is considered a full-service radiology provider, offering services such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Ultrasound (including 3D/4D), Mammography, Bone Densitometry (DEXA), and Radiology (X-Ray). Muscatine Radiology is the lowest cost diagnostic radiology provider in the Muscatine area, guaranteed. Patients can be seen on the same day they make their appointment. Muscatine Radiology utilizes voice recognition technology which provides referring physicians the exam results the same day as the test, which in turn allows the patient to receive a faster diagnosis.

The staff at Muscatine Radiology believes that maintaining a calm and relaxing ambiance is beneficial to their patients’ well-being. To accomplish this, patients and customers are welcomed into a spa-like atmosphere complete with a free coffee bar including tea and hot chocolate.

Along with offering exceptional service and care to their patients, Muscatine Radiology gets involved in the community by sponsoring events such as Muscatine High School sports and music clubs, multiple Muscatine area breast cancer awareness fundraisers, and offer free patient education seminars. The Muscatine staff is also involved with the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk to be held in Iowa City, with the hope of getting the Muscatine area more involved with such an event.

Muscatine Radiology believes that it is important to support local businesses, big or small, in order to help the community grow and thrive, and values the networking and business-to-business opportunities GMCCI facilitates, such as Business After Hours. In fact, when looking for local services, they utilize the Chamber Directory located at www.muscatine.com. Muscatine Radiology believes in GMCCI’s core values of leadership, relevance, integrity, innovation and vow to continue to uphold these values as their business continues to grow.
