How Do We Stack Up? By Bill Phelan

CEO Magazine recently issued a special report on the “Best/Worst States for Business”. With over 500 CEO’s contributing, Iowa placed 22nd in the nation. This is down from the 17th ranking received last year.

CEO Magazine ranked Texas as the best state for business, while California came in last. CEO Magazine’s special report goes on to rank states on several major factors under the heading of: Ratings, State GDP and Unemployment, Domestic Migration, State Government and State-Local Tax Burden. On a grading scale of 10 as excellent, 5 as average and 1 as poor, Iowa ranked as follows:

Iowa’s sixth-place ranking in productivity growth helped place it 10th this year, down two spots from last year. The state shows balance across the board, with five more top 25 performance rankings and no ranking lower than 33rd. Iowa remains a strong, productive economy.

Its agribusiness, food processing and technology cluster remains the largest cluster in the state, encompassing 190,000 jobs. While employment in this cluster remains essentially flat since 2002, it is significantly better than in the rest of the nation, making agribusiness one of the state’s most competitive industries. Other important clusters in the state include machinery manufacturing, which has

gained 2,000 jobs since 2002, advanced materials, computer and electronic manufacturing, defense and security, and transportation and logistics.

The HON Company Wins Product Innovations Award

Allsteel Wins Four Best of NeoCon AwardsAllsteel Inc. walked off with four 2011Best of NeoCon honors for its development of furnishings for collaborative

workplaces. Gather, a clever yet practical furniture collection for the “we” public areas of the workplace, earned three of the prestigious honors: Silver in the Education Solutions category; Silver in the Seating/Sofas & Lounge category; and, Editors’ Choice in the Seating/Benches category specifically for its Mind-Share and Rise. Additionally, Involve, which uniquely supports user preference, including collaboration in the “I” workstation, took the Silver prize in Casegoods, a

coup for the company in its first-ever venture into laminate casegoods. This year’s competition drew 321 entries in 42 product and furnishing categories, and was sponsored by Contract magazine, Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc., the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), and McMorrow Report.com. It was Allsteel’s own collaboration with industrial designers IDa Design in consultation with HOK that yielded Gather, a series of unprecedented designs unlike any other conventional contract furnishings. The collection supports the evolution of chance encounters into full-fledged meetings. Involve, designed by Q Design, uniquely offers a solution for the more than

50 percent of collaboration that happens spontaneously at the primary workstation. It’s designed to work with Terrace DNA or Stride, two Allsteel system staples, and includes an offering of freestanding desks, casegoods, and banquette-like seating for open plan and private office. “Best of NeoCon is putting the icing on the cake for Allsteel and the launch of these two innovative collections,” said Kris Yates, vice president of marketing. “We’ve been experiencing such strong customer response to both Gather and Involve, so to know that they’ve been awarded this prestigious honor is tremendously exciting. Our thanks to the judges for this recognition.”

The HON Company’s Voi™ collection

earned the Grand Prize Product Innovations Award, sponsored by BUILDINGS Magazine, in the Furniture Systems and Accessories category. Announced during NeoCon, the office furniture industry’s leading trade event, the award recognizes excellence in products for commercial buildings

with high-performance, aesthetic, and functional features.

Voi is a collection of layered worksurfaces and storage components designed to meet the personal needs of any user in any type of workplace application—from private and semi-private office to teaming, touch down and open plan. Voi creates a unified, cohesive aesthetic for an entire workplace community.

“To be acknowledged for product innovation with this award is greatly appreciated,” said Mark Roumfort, vice president of product design and development.

Stanley Consultants Wins National SAME Sustaining Member Award

The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) recently named Stanley Consultants the winner of the Seymour S. Greenfield Sustaining Member Award at the 2011 SAME Joint Engineering Training Conference (JETC) in Grapevine, Texas. The award is given for continued, noteworthy contributions to SAME.

Stanley Consultants provides program management, planning, engineering, environmental and construction services worldwide. The Society of American Military Engineers is the premier professional military engineering association in the United States.

“Over the years we have developed a rock solid kinship with SAME, working side-by-side to help meet the mission of SAME, which is to promote and facilitate engineering support for national security by developing and enhancing relationships and competencies among uniformed services, public- and private-sector engineers and related professionals, and by developing future engineers through outreach and mentoring,” said Gayle Roberts, president of Stanley Consultants. “It means a great deal to us to be honored for helping to make the world a safer place.”

A sustaining member of SAME for over 35 years, Stanley Consultants began its association with the organization by helping to charter the Washington, D.C. post. The firm is now active in over 45 posts domestically and internationally, with over 200 staff members enrolled in SAME membership. Stanley Consultants supports the mission of SAME through exhibits, advertising, serving on post committees and supporting SAME’s regional conferences, post meetings, scholarship activities, and mentoring activities. Currently, Stanley Consultants’ members represent top roles as the chair of the young member’s council and as a member of the senior executive group (SEG). In addition, Stanley Consultants has participated in and sponsored several small business outreach events across the nation.

The Seymour S. Greenfield Sustaining Member Award was first awarded in 2010. Sustaining Member awards are presented annually to one company each in the small, medium, and large size categories. The winning firm must have made notable contribution to SAME throughout the year by: Appointing individuals to sustaining member representative positions for each Post affiliation; taking leadership positions at the Post, Region and National level; supporting Young Member participation in SAME activities and mentoring programs; supporting educational and community service activities; and exhibiting and sponsoring activities/events at national and regional conferences.

This award will join Stanley Consultants’ 2004 J.W. Morris Sustaining Member Firm of the Year award. First presented in 1981, the award is given in honor of Lt. Gen. John W. Morris, U.S. Army, for eminent contributions to SAME by a Sustaining Member firm.

The President’s Corner by Bill Phelan

On Monday, June 20th, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce held its 2nd Annual Governors Summit, in Washington, D.C. The following governors were in attendance:

The Hon. John Hickenlooper, Governor of Colorado, The Hon. Jack Markell, Governor of Delaware, The Hon. Rick Scott, Governor of Florida , The Hon. Terry Branstad, Governor of Iowa , The Hon. Bob McDonnell, Governor of Virginia and The Hon. Scott Walker, Governor of Wisconsin.

Each of these governors were asked to invite a representative from a large business, a small business and the leader of the state’s largest Chamber of Commerce Organization to attend the event.

Governor Branstad invited two representatives to attend the event with him. Gage Kent, CEO and Chairman of the Board for Muscatine Foods Corporation representing large business

and David Greenspon, President of Competitive Edge Advertising in Clive, representing small business. Also attending the event was Ken Anderson, Chair of the Iowa Chamber Alliance, representing his organization’s 14 member Chambers of Commerce, including GMCCI.

I was honored to be asked by Gage Kent to attend as his guest. This allowed me to participate and learn from the event as a Chamber President.

I invite all of you to visit http://www.c-spanarchives.org/program/GovernorsSu to watch the C-SPAN version of the event. You will learn a lot about how the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the invited governors view the current economic conditions and hear how it is affecting their individual states, along with how they are dealing with these current economic issues.

Two interesting issues discussed at the summit were the new global economy and the interaction between states to recruit new business. The first issue repeatedly conveyed that businesses in the U.S. are

no longer competing nationally, but rather globally.

It was also clear the states are all aggressively working to recruit new businesses and in effect, “the gloves are off” between states. Although all six Governors in attendance were very civil to each other, it was crystal clear that it is no longer business as usual. Every governor is actively working with their legislators and business leaders to improve their states’ economy and working to recruit from states that are less competitive. In other words, the fight is on, and Iowa needs to make sure it does not fall behind in this race.

I encourage all businesses to go to www.uschamber.com and review this year’s “Enterprising States” report.

Again, thank you to Gage Kent and Muscatine Foods Corporation for allowing me to attend this year’s summit. I know this information will provide a great deal of focus for our future Economic Development discussions and plans here in Muscatine.

Robbin Block has been evangelizing the benefits of marketing strategy for over 25 years. Part geek, part creative, she’s brought her in-depth knowledge of the Web and its strategic application to business to companies of all sizes and to thousands of readers via her book, Social Persuasion: Making Sense of Social Media for Small Business. This month, Robbin discusses some of social media’s many implications on the crafting and execution of winning small business marketing plans.

What’s the biggest misperception about social media’s role in marketing, and what should entrepreneurs really be doing as they map out a new small business?

Social media can’t solve all your marketing problems. For a business, it needs to be thought of like any other communication tool. You need to understand the fundamentals of marketing — who’s your target audience, where do they get their information, what do they care about, etc.— to find the right media mix that makes sense for you.

What is the most underutilized non-social media marketing method today?

By far, it’s public relations. Many people are afraid of it, or don’t know what it is. Instead they’ll spend money on poorly placed ads that will almost always fail.

What are two or three go-to resources for finding data about your market?

The U.S. Census. A lot of valuable information from the latest census is now being released. Industry associations. Industry trade publications and consumer magazines. Their media kits have great

information about their readers’ demographics and interests.

And many more resources are available at my website, www.blockbeta.com.

Coupons are gaining popularity as a means for luring potential customers. If this option appears right for a small business, what is needed to help turn coupon users into regular customers?

Understand what attracted them in the first place. People who just want a deal are tough to convert. But many customers use coupons to “sample the goods.” To get them to come back and pay full price, use strategic messaging at each touchpoint to help push them down the purchase path. This messaging can be done verbally, through printed materials, online, and even reinforced with “gifts”.

Can you provide an example of how this works?

A Pilates studio I work with has used social coupons to bring in new customers, offering a 7-week program at a discounted rate. Each week, the studio reinforces the benefits of membership and the results the customer would get if they continue taking their classes. Communications include a comprehensive orientation, an introductory gift of a branded water bottle, follow-on emails, etc. It’s a planned program designed to positively reinforce the customer experience. This in combination with excellent service may be enough to convince the customer to continue at full price.

Why should entrepreneurs work with a SCORE small business mentor to develop and monitor their marketing plans?

Marketing needs to be flexible, because the environment within which a business operates is always changing. And the business itself is evolving as new opportunities or threats come to light. A SCORE mentor can help filter the information and focus the entrepreneur on what’s important.
