Every third Saturday of the Month at the White House

SCORE welcomes Dr. John A. Wojtecki, as the new author of SCORE publications within the Pearl City Progress. Doctor John will be taking over for Jane Daufeldt, the previous SCORE author. He plans on continuing to share with the Chamber audience, insights on SCORE, the value of using the resources available and many observations from a SCORE’s volunteer’s perspective. Please help us in welcoming Doctor John. Just a reminder about SCORE

SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals through education and mentorship. They have been doing this for nearly fifty years. Because their work is supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), and thanks to their network of 13,000+ volunteers, they are able to deliver their services at no charge or at very low cost. In late September, John will be traveling to Austin, Texas to visit the SCORE chapter there, and spend time at what is called an incubator there that is associated with the University of Texas. He plans to take plenty of pictures and share them with everyone in the October newsletter.

SCORE offers mentorship, counseling, business templates and workshops. Don't forget that SCORE volunteers are ready, willing and able you offer their years of experience, their keen insight, all within a supportive environment.

I look forward to sharing additional insights in the coming months.

Robbin Block has been evangelizing the benefits of marketing strategy for over 25 years. Part geek, part creative, she’s brought her in-depth knowledge of the Web and its strategic application to business to companies of all sizes and to thousands of readers via her book, Social Persuasion: Making Sense of Social Media for Small Business. This month, Robbin discusses some of social media’s many implications on the crafting and execution of winning small business marketing plans.

What’s the biggest misperception about social media’s role in marketing, and what should entrepreneurs really be doing as they map out a new small business?

Social media can’t solve all your marketing problems. For a business, it needs to be thought of like any other communication tool. You need to understand the fundamentals of marketing — who’s your target audience, where do they get their information, what do they care about, etc.— to find the right media mix that makes sense for you.

What is the most underutilized non-social media marketing method today?

By far, it’s public relations. Many people are afraid of it, or don’t know what it is. Instead they’ll spend money on poorly placed ads that will almost always fail.

What are two or three go-to resources for finding data about your market?

The U.S. Census. A lot of valuable information from the latest census is now being released. Industry associations. Industry trade publications and consumer magazines. Their media kits have great

information about their readers’ demographics and interests.

And many more resources are available at my website, www.blockbeta.com.

Coupons are gaining popularity as a means for luring potential customers. If this option appears right for a small business, what is needed to help turn coupon users into regular customers?

Understand what attracted them in the first place. People who just want a deal are tough to convert. But many customers use coupons to “sample the goods.” To get them to come back and pay full price, use strategic messaging at each touchpoint to help push them down the purchase path. This messaging can be done verbally, through printed materials, online, and even reinforced with “gifts”.

Can you provide an example of how this works?

A Pilates studio I work with has used social coupons to bring in new customers, offering a 7-week program at a discounted rate. Each week, the studio reinforces the benefits of membership and the results the customer would get if they continue taking their classes. Communications include a comprehensive orientation, an introductory gift of a branded water bottle, follow-on emails, etc. It’s a planned program designed to positively reinforce the customer experience. This in combination with excellent service may be enough to convince the customer to continue at full price.

Expert Tips: Beyond Social Media

Robbin Block Seattle, WA www.blockbeta.com [email protected]

Why should entrepreneurs work with a SCORE small business mentor to develop and monitor their marketing plans?

Marketing needs to be flexible, because the environment within which a business operates is always changing. And the business itself is evolving as new opportunities or threats come to light. A SCORE mentor can help filter the information and focus the entrepreneur on what’s important.

Member Spotlight: Musco Sports LightingWho: Musco Sports LightingWhat: Musco provides outdoor and indoor lighting for various applications specializing in the sports lighting market.Where: 2107 Stewart Road, MuscatineWebsite: www.musco.comMember Since: January 1, 1982

The story of Musco Sports Lighting began in Oskaloosa, Iowa in 1968, with two men sharing one vision. Joe Crookham was practicing law and Myron Gordin was running a tool-making business out of his living room. The two met, and in the spirit of entrepreneurship, formed a partnership.

In July of 1976, they purchased the failed Muscatine Lighting and Manufacturing Company. Knowing nothing about lighting, Crookham and Gordin studied the factory’s product lines, as well as potential markets. Research and development has continued since then, leading to technological breakthroughs that make lighting systems more efficient and trouble-free for owners, easier to

install for contractors, better to compete under for players, and less obtrusive for neighbors.

In 1982, Musco introduced their mobile sports-lighting system, allowing stadiums without permanent lights to hold televised events at night. Musco credits and affiliates now include NASCAR, NFL, the NBA, Major League Baseball, the Olympic Games, Little League Baseball, National Recreation and Park Association and many more.

Along with providing lighting to many different venues, Musco has a history of supporting efforts that improve the quality of life in our community. They encourage their team members to volunteer their time in the community, as well as being active, making contributions to non-profit organizations and participating on community boards.

As a company they want to help the community be a great place to live and grow. GMCCI wishes to thank Musco Sports Lighting for its dedicated years of membership to the Chamber. Want your chance in the spotlight? Be sure to attend our next Business After Hours, where you’ll have the chance to be chosen to be featured.

Women’s Connection Names Nancy Renkes as Co-Executive Director

Women’s Connection, one of the largest women’s organizations in Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois, announced that Nancy Renkes has been named Co-Executive Director, effective August 13, 2012. Renkes will partner with Colleen Rafferty, who has served as Executive Director since 2006, to lead this 14-year old non-profit organization.

Most recently employed as Vice President of Fund Development for Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois, Renkes has extensive experience in publishing and fundraising. Before

joining the Girl Scouts, she worked as sales manager/niche products for the Moline Dispatch Publishing Company, as sales manager for QC Magazine and in various sales management positions for the Quad-City Times. She also served as fund development director for Junior Achievement of the Quad Cities.

“In Nancy, we gain the expertise of a seasoned fundraiser and marketer, and she also brings her experience helping to lead and grow a pre-eminent member organization,” says Women’s Connection Board President Diana Zogg, who explains the two Co-Executive Directors will function as a job-share team. “We believe this is a win-win, enabling Women’s Connection to increase the talents and experience of our leadership team, while providing Nancy and Colleen the opportunity for better balance between career and family obligations.”

With a mission to inspire, educate, connect and empower women, Women’s Connection has more than 800 members and will present 13 events in the Quad Cities and Muscatine in 2012, including an inaugural women’s leadership conference in October. Average attendance is more than 300 for events, which feature nationally recognized keynote speakers such as Grammy Award-winning artist Judy Collins, University of Iowa Women’s Basketball Coach Lisa Bluder, world-class distance swimmer Diana Nyad, Georgia’s first African American Chief Presiding Judge Glenda Hatchett, Brigadier General Becky Halstead and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Geraldine Brooks, to name a few.

A non-partisan, non-religious, non-profit 501C3 organization, Women’s Connection’s key partners are Royal Neighbors of America and Trinity Regional Health System.

Trinity Recognized in Top 20 percent of Health Systems Nationwide for Quality, EfficiencyTrinity Regional Health System has been recognized in the top 20 percent of health systems nationwide in the most recent Truven Health Analytics’ “100 Top Hospitals: 15 Top Health Systems survey.” The annual survey published in the health industry publication, “Modern Healthcare” on June 18, identifies what are considered to be the country’s 15 health systems setting the highest benchmarks on clinical quality, efficiency and patient satisfaction. Sixty-four of the 321 health systems evaluated nationwide were identified in

the top quintile. Trinity was recognized in the Small Health System category, which includes those health systems with less than $750 million in operating expenses.

“Being recognized in the top quintile means you’re a high performer across the board, not just in a single service line, like cardiovascular disease. By visiting Trinity, a patient is more likely to have a better outcome, be more satisfied, receive care at a more reasonable cost and have less chance of a medical error than they would

elsewhere,” said Trinity President and CEO Rick Seidler.

“Quad-City residents have come to expect that kind of excellence from Trinity, and we strive to meet those expectations every single day.”

Leadership Muscatine Kicks Off 25th Year

Leadership Muscatine will be kicking-off its 25th year and the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GMCCI), as well as Muscatine Community College (MCC), are looking for people with drive and ability who want to enhance their community leadership skills and have a vested interest in the Muscatine community.

Since its beginning in 1988, over 500 participants have graduated from Leadership Muscatine. A significant portion of the class members are still actively involved in improving the quality of life in our community.

“The success of any community depends on many citizens who are willing to contribute their time and talents, both in elected positions and in volunteer organizations to make the community a better place to live and to work. “says Bob Allbee, President, MCC.

The focus of the program is the same today as it was during its inception; to provide participants with a thorough knowledge of Muscatine and its agencies and to identify issues and challenges facing the community. Many successful community projects have started as ideas within the leadership program. This program is an example of how people working together achieve common goals.

Participation in the program requires a serious time commitment. Fourteen sessions plus a group project requires between 75 and 95 hours (over a seven-month period) to successfully complete the program. Participants, whether new to Muscatine or lifelong residents, will gain a better understanding of

the many different organizations and their leaders that work to make Muscatine an exceptional community. Class members will build strong friendships with other future leaders and be challenged to get involved to make a positive impact on our community.

The 2012-2013 Leadership Muscatine class will begin their experience with orientation the first part of October, and will continue with two sessions per month concluding in the Spring of 2013.

Please see the two Leadership Muscatine inserts in this edition of the Pearl City Progress for further details regarding the application process and enrollment.

Loan Officer Receives Community Grant

Melanie Hinman, Loan Officer for 1862 Mortgage, has received a $2,500 Community Betterment Grant for her participation in a statewide contest.

The Meaning of Homeownership Contest was a partnership between the Iowa Finance Authority and the Iowa Association of Realtors to energize Iowans about homeownership this summer. Iowa Realtors and lenders asked their clients what homeownership means to them. Answers were written on memo boards and captured by photographs (Responses can be seen online at: www.IowaFinanceAuthority.gov/Contest).

Voting took place on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/IowaFinance) and clients who received the most online votes received a $1,500 Menards gift card, while

Realtors and lenders receiving the most votes were given the community grant. There were 122 entries submitted and more than 13,000 votes cast.

“I am thrilled to receive the Community Betterment grant for our area,” said Melanie Hinman, Loan Officer for 1862 Mortgage, who is still determining what organization will receive the money. “I appreciate all the votes and all the opportunities that the Iowa Finance Authority brings through their First Home Plus Grant. We’ve had many first-time homebuyers take advantage of the grant to be able to achieve their dream of homeownership!”

The grant will be awarded to Hinman on Friday, July 27th at 1pm at the 1862 Mortgage and Ruhl&Ruhl REALTORS office at 226 E. 2nd Street in Muscatine. Other winners were Jennifer Barnett of Cedar Rapids and Debra Callahan of Skogman Realty in Cedar Rapids.

“We are excited for Melanie and our area,” said Eric Schlutz, Regional Manager of Ruhl&Ruhl REALTORS. “She works so hard ensuring our clients are pre-approved for a home mortgage and have the opportunity for the dream of homeownership.”

The Muscatine Art Center’s Annual Ice Cream Social took on a new twist, with the addition of an art show in the Japanese Garden. Families were invited to spend the afternoon making crafts and enjoying live performances.

The Muscatine History & Industry Center invited museum patrons to make their mark on three specially prepared canvasses. The colorful works of art will hang in the museum for the duration of the summer for visitors to admire.

The Musser Public Library organized two separate events for PatriART Week. The first event, Family Trivia Night, focused on participating team’s knowledge of American history. The second event was an opening reception for a collection of rarely seen before photographs taken by the late Oscar Grossheim, which was hosted by River’s Edge Gallery.

Muscatine’s Annual 4th of July Parade kicked off promptly at 5:00 p.m. with sirens echoing through historic downtown. Muscatine’s emergency vehicles led the seventy-four parade entries and floats, representing local businesses and non-profit groups, down Iowa Avenue and on to Second Street, much to the delight of spectators.

Muscatine Power and Water invited local kids to have their pictures taken with Sponge Bob Squarepants and Dora the Explorer, at Riverview Center after the parade. Hundreds of families gathered on the riverfront to meet the cartoon characters.

And finally, the Muscatine Symphony Orchestra gave a free public performance, in front of Pearl City Station, just before the fireworks were launched over the Mississippi River.

If your network goes down for

one afternoon, you could lose more than just your drive.

In the rough – that’s how it is when your network’s down. You can’t help but lose momentum,

focus and direction. And before you know it, you’re completely off your game.

Your business depends on the constant flow of an ever increasing amount of information,

which must move quickly, accurately and securely. Now more than ever the architecture of

network computing has become the norm. Just as the plumbing beneath the ground is vital

to our existence, so too your network is vital to your company’s success.

When it comes to your data network, are there:

Any leaks?

Any blockages?

Any impurities or toxins?

If you answered “no” or even “I don’t know” to any of these questions, you may

have exposure and vulnerability issues that are compromising your productivity and

leaving you risk impaired.

If this sounds like you, this could be costing you money:

• the money you’re losing now, and,

• the money you could lose down the road… sooner or later.

Page 15: Pearl City Progress - ChamberMastercloud.chambermaster.com/userfiles/UserFiles/chambers/831/File/Pearl... · January 31, 2013. The 30,000 square-foot complex will include an extended

Peace of Mind

Time is MoneyTime is Money

Peace of Mind

You could be losing money now in one or

more of the following areas:

Security

Data Protection & Integrity

Asset & Document Management

Uptime Stutter (system drag and drain)

Capacity

Backup & Storage

You could also lose money later – due to a

negative network event .

Just how much money are you currently

losing, and how much do you stand to lose as

a result of network vulnerabilities?

We can help you answer this, but one

thing’s for certain:

It’s almost always more than you think.

Which is why we’d like to offer you something

of real value.

And it’s absolutely…

As your full-service business technology partner, we’d

like to offer you a Comprehensive Network Audit –

a $500 value – absolutely FREE!

The results will show you whether and where your network

is currently at risk, and the extent and severity of each

of your vulnerabilities. When we’re done, you’ll have a

complete picture of your network’s current strengths and

main areas where potential problems could occur.

Once you have all the facts you can then decide which

– if any – of those vulnerabilities you’d like us to address,

and whether a Managed Network Solutions partnership

with ITP would benefit your company.

Remember, the Comprehensive Network Audit is

absolutely FREE. Think of it as free peace of mind

that could help your company avoid a major network

disaster before it happens.

Free!

As a subsidiary of WTC Communications, Inc., ITP has
