Jodie and Steve to mention to a contact that may be able to assist.

COMPLETED

Strategy 4: Regional marketing Progress on Trails Marketing Concept & funding applications (Project Team reps)

Lotterywest grant had been approved. Further documentation on the project outline including funding application can be found in google drive at https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B0RomrSRh_rmMDFhdDRzZTdVZ2M. Refer to folders Strategic Planning and Funding Applications. File name is Trails Marketing Project – PTG strategic plan action 4. Jodie advised that the project is likely to commence in late July following the appointment of MAPTO’s replacement.

Strategy 6: Promotional events Planning & funding for upcoming events – Peel Paddling Carnival Sept 2016; Walk Over October 2016 (Barry Small & Robyn Lister)

Peel Paddling Carnival is being held, thanks to supporting funders. It is not proposing to seek additional funding from PTG. Last year 627 people participated and of these, approximately 250 people new to canoeing or into a new discipline. For 2016 the Eastern Foreshore won’t be available due to bridge works. Nanga Challenge is the major event and are keen to be included again.

Walk Over October is in the planning phase and PTG has lodged a funding application through City of Mandurah for $2000. Dwellingup Adventures would like an invitation to be involved. Last year over 2000 people attended a walk. Copy of application is within the Google Drive.

Barry Small briefed the group on the proposed ‘Eco Venturer’s Journal’, an activity booklet for kids organised by the Mandurah Environment and Heritage Group. Dudley Dolphin is the mascot to clean up the waterways and is designed to help educate kids on the estuary and waterways. Information is available on website and facebook pages. Booklets distributed through the Mandurah Museum and Visitor Centre. Also looking at PDF version. Will also look at educating through schools. They looked at promoting an environment event at Stretch festival and they are going to look at being Mandurah Tree Advocates as well - to promote trees within the urban area eg verge trees, streetscapes etc. For copies of the document, email Barry and he will provide them or visit Mandurah Museum or Mandurah Visitor Centre.

Strategy 7 & 8: Trails & Map Development Progress on Rail Trail Dwellingup to Boddington proposal (Project Team reps)

In the last Minutes, it was reported that Peter White hosted an exploratory trail ride to Inglehope. Peter reported that many of those that participated were locals but would be future advocates for the trails. At this point there is not much more to report.

8. Additional updates from PTG members

Shire of Boddington Completing an existing trail, originally proposed by Lions Club but now through the Shire. Lions will maintain. The trail starts at the Boddington foreshore, there is a boardwalk extension to the trail and then it heads over King Road and includes a Bird Hide. There were private easements that had to be dealt with. There was interest in the process and/or compensation that Boddington used to obtain permission to access private land and address public liability issues. This led onto general discussion around liability issues surrounding the creation and formalisation of trails. This will be important moving forward and creating additional trails. It would be interesting to research what was in place in other countries. Suggestion: Development of a state government policy relating to access through private property State trails strategy being undertaken. Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale Submitted a Lotterywest funding application to renew a wetlands walk on DPAW land but working in partnership. Want to promote and rebadge as no longer a wetlands walk, so needs to be refashioned. Lotterywest advised they were not interested in funding anything that’s on someone else’s land other than applicant. This has huge implications to Shires and trails funding. DSR supported the application. Lotterywest seems to be heading in a different direction for trails. Action: This concern needs to be further investigated. Vanessa provided feedback on the Perth Peel Mountain Bike Plan. Her concern was around the other users of the trails vs mountain biking. Were others being pushed out to develop the mountain bike trails? Note: There is a state bridle trails strategy recently developed. South Metro Population Health Unit Robyn advised that there was no further information to update, just the promotional events that are detailed above. Shire of Murray Jodie is now a representative on the State Trails Reference Group. The Pinjarra Heritage trail is now open and has QR codes. Dwellingup Tourism Trails Concept is still progressing. Not much to report at present, currently collecting information and getting ducks in a row. Economic Analysis is currently being undertaken. Jodie provided very few comments on the draft Perth Peel Mountain Bike Plan, looks good overall. Jarrahdale Heritage Society. Following on from previous Minutes, the ghost trail walk was a success with a profit of $1615 being made from ghost walk with 250 people. It’s not scary, it’s more historical. Held annually in April. POW walk and Mundlimup held in May and June. July is Kitty’s gorge. Mr McCrumb is presenting a talk in August.

Peel Development Commission Kelvin advised that the Peel Tourism Economic Development Strategy is nearly finalised. There has been a lot of consultation as part of developing the strategy. It follows on from MAPTOs Anytime Adventures theme. Trails have been a priority from this report. A Steering Committee has been established with LGA reps, DPAW, DSR and WAMBA. Dwellingup Trails Hub is one of the projects currently being considered. Kelvin is trying to secure some funding through Supporting Our South.
