AIM : To determine the value of gravitational acceleration , g

APPARATUS : Ticker timer, power supply, retord stand, plasticine, g- clamp and soft board

ARRANGEMENT OF APPARATUS :

PROCEDURE :

1. A ticker timer is clamped to a retord stand with a g-clamp and placed on table.

2. One end of a carbonized ticker tape ( about 1.5 m) is attached to a weight holder with a total mass 200g.

3. The other end of a ticker tape is passed through the ticker timer.4. A soft board is placed on the floor below the weight to stop its fall. 5. The ticker timer is switched on and the weight is released so that its

fall onto the soft board.6. Six strips are cut off from the middle section of the ticker tape with

each stripe containing 2 dot spaces.7. A tape chart is constructed and from the chart acceleration of gravity

is calculated.

Result :

1. Plot a ticker tape chart2. Calculate the value of g.

Initial velocity = x cm 2 x 0.02s

Final Velocity = y cm 2 x 0.02s

3. Time taken, t = ( 6-1) strips x 0.04 = 0.20 s4. Gravitational g is calculated formula g = v - u

t

Discussion :1. It is found that the value of g is less than standard value of g = 9.8 ms-

2. This is because the weight is not actually free falling. Its affected by the following

a) Air resistanceb) Friction between the ticker tape and the ticker timer
