Behind the Curtain: An Insider’s View of Jay Leno’s Tonight ShowBy Dave Berg • Foreword by Jay Leno

Experience the wacky antics and ground-breaking appearances of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno from a backstage perspective. Gain an insider’s view of how Leno changed the face of late-night, inviting not just actors but also journalists and politicos to the show. What happens behind the scenes is sometimes even more revealing than what happens in front of the camera. Serious and shocking, author Dave Berg proves that these memorable moments can still surprise and entertain.

Called “the best booker in the business” by Bill O’Reilly, Berg delivered a vast array of high-profile guests, including Barack Obama as the first sitting president to ever appear on a late-night program. Berg tells what really happened during the show’s most legendary moments—Hugh Grant’s mea culpa, the live Boston show with an inebriated Cheers cast, Jerry Seinfeld’s appearance with John F. Kennedy Jr., and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s surprise political announcement. The witty and engaging anecdotes in this collection feature such personalities as John Kerry, Russell Crowe, Bill Clinton, Willie Nelson, Teri Hatcher, Garth Brooks, and Dennis Rodman.

Newcomb Pottery: A Visual TreasuryA stunning pictorial history of an enduring New Orleans legacy.

Founded in 1886 and connected to Tulane University, the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College was created as an institution to prepare women to be financially independent community leaders. In 1896, pottery was established as a separate, for-profit branch of the art department, quickly earning international acclaim for the striking variety of ceramics produced by talented young ladies under the direction of the Woodward brothers. The fruits of the art department also included calligraphy, textiles, jewelry, and other crafts. In this collection of beautifully photographed images resides a history of the artwork that established the Newcomb movement as one of critical artistic importance.

Chronicled in 150 photos from the collections housed in the Louisiana State Museum and the Newcomb Art Gallery at Tulane University, the images are presented with captions providing details on their origin and the date of creation. Devoid of commentary, the stark photos provide a clear record of the breadth of complexity and talent that defined the art of Newcomb College. From the most graceful of early Newcomb pieces awash in delicate hues of blue—with clear Art Nouveau influences—to the more modern pieces in natural and metallic tones that embrace the geometric trends of mid-twentieth century modernism, these images provide a stunning record of an astounding achievement by the women of Newcomb College.

The Battle of New Orleans: But for a Piece of WoodBy Ron Chapman

What would have happened if the British won?

The Battle of New Orleans was unknowingly fought after the signing of the Treaty of Ghent, but the American victory had important consequences. This fascinating examination of the long campaign up the Mississippi River and the final battle of the War of 1812 details the high stakes and explores the true British motivation for their bloody offensive. They attacked to claim New Orleans for their Spanish allies, which would have voided the Louisiana Purchase, robbed the United States of a valuable port, and antagonized France, Britain’s ancient foe. The American forces—a disparate group under Gen. Andrew Jackson—could have been crushed, but for one British commander’s fatal error.

RON CHAPMAN • Hometown: Chalmette, LAChapman is the recipient of the Spirit of 1812 Award from the National Society United States Daughters of 1812. He is a history professor at Nunez Community College and a popular speaker. Chapman’s articles are regularly featured in Louisiana Life and New Orleans Magazine, and his weekly column in the St. Bernard Voice earned eight Best Regular Column awards from the Louisiana Press Association. An accomplished boat builder, Chapman avidly explores the history and culture of his home state.

Civil War LimericksBy Charles H. Hayes

Rhyme your way through the history of the Civil War.

Generals, politicians, spies, and more played a significant role in the Civil War. Author and cartoonist Charles H. Hayes bares their strategic gaffs, political feuds, and daring deeds in scathing caricatures. Accompanying each of the ninety-six images is an original limerick and a brief biography with details of the individual’s role in the Civil War. Hayes’s goal with this, and with his first book The Gray and the Blue: A Comic Strip History of the Civil War, is to encourage readers to look beyond the simplification of the Civil War as a conflict between the virtuous North and the evil South. He uses a dry sense of humor to achieve this and engage readers in a wider understanding of history.

The Buttermilk Biscuit BoyBy Amanda S. Nelson • Illustrated by Laurie Klein

Yee-haw! It’s breakfast time!

It’s a laugh on every page when two cowboys try to make breakfast and instead make a buttermilk biscuit that comes alive! The buttermilk biscuit boy is sure he can outrun the cowpokes and takes off like a shot. They are joined by hungry pigs, cows, ponies, and a wily coyote as they pursue the smug pastry through pastures far and wide. When they come to a wide canal, it looks like the buttermilk biscuit boy might be stuck with no way out. Will he escape the famished, grumpy group? Or will his plans melt like hot butter on a crumbly biscuit? This spunky country twist on the classic tale and bright, playful illustrations will delight readers of all ages.

Alligators & Crocodiles

Cajun ’Ti Beau and the CocodriesBy Cay Gibson • Illustrated by Colleen D’Antoni

Never trust an alligator’s smile!

Young ’Ti Beau dons his snappy new Mardi Gras clothes for a walk through the swamp. Five alligators catch sight of ’Ti Beau’s elegant attire and decide that he looks quite tasty. The clever boy figures that being alive is better than looking good, so he bargains away his new clothes until he’s left in nothing but his conson. But each gator believes he is the handsomest, grandest, fanciest, swimmiest, spiffiest cocodrie in the bayou, and ’Ti Beau gets trapped by their loud argument. Can ’Ti Beau escape, or will he become the sauce piquant for the night’s dinner? Hilarious illustrations of alligators decked out in ’Ti Beau’s finery will delight readers. A French-to-English glossary and a recipe for Alligator Sauce Piquant are included in this trickster tale.

Kelley serves as associate director of Innovative Evangelism, Inc. She is the co-author of Don’t Miss the Blessing and the author of Baptist Dishes Worth Blessing, also published by Pelican. Burroughs is a well-known Christian speaker and author.

One of the most celebrated writers of his day, George W. Cable creates a vivid picture of the South and an insightful look into a person’s soul in this collection. Entitled “The Solitary,” “The Taxidermist,” and “The Entomologist,” each story is set in Southern Louisiana and embraces Creole culture. Told with an unmistakenly Southern voice, Cable exposes the heart and soul of the Pelican state. Cable helped lead the local color movement of the late 1800s and is the author of Creoles of Louisiana, Old Creole Days, and Strange True Stories of Louisiana, among other titles. Harvey is the author of a biography entitled The Life and Selected Letters of Lyle Saxon, also published by Pelican.

Bozeman and Smith’s e-book companion to Interpersonal Relationship Skills for Ministers provides insight into challenges church leaders face. Topics include the true meaning of discipleship, nurturing relationships in a technology-driven world, and embracing social media to reach people. The overall message is one of spiritual and personal reflection. Bozeman is a senior professor of social work at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and Smith is the associate dean of Christian ministry and dean of chapel for Louisiana College. Bozeman and Smith are the authors of Interpersonal Relationship Skills for Ministers, also published by Pelican.
