LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

THE COLLECT Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel and the administration of the Holy Sacraments, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE FIRST READING: READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Acts of

the Apostles Chapter 2 beginning at the 1st verse

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Par'thians and Medes and E'lamites and residents of Mesopota'mia, Judea and Cappado'cia, Pontus and Asia, Phryg'ia and Pamphyl'ia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyre'ne, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God." PSALM 104: 25-37

25. O Lord, how manifold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

26. Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great.

27. There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it.

28. All of them look to you* to give them their food in due season.

29. You give it to them; they gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.

30. You hide your face, and they are terrified;* you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.

31. You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth.

32. May the glory of the Lord endure for ever;* may the Lord rejoice in all his works.

33. He looks at the earth and it trembles;* he touches the mountains and they smoke.

34. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; * I will praise my God while I have my being.

35. May these words of mine please him;* I will rejoice in the Lord.

36. Let sinners be consumed out of the earth, * and the wicked be no more.

37. Bless the Lord, O my soul. * Hallelujah! V. Glory to the Father, and to the Son;* and to the Holy Spirit; R. As it was in the beginning is now:* and shall be forever. Amen

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians Chapter12 beginning at the 4th verse. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body -- Jews or Greeks, slaves or free -- and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Reader: The Lord be with you. ALL: And also with you.

Reader: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour.

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the

sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

Reader: The Gospel of Christ ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

Today is the Feast of Pentecost, also known within the Christian world as Whitsunday because of the early church custom of the newly baptised being clothed in white at their baptism on this day.

Pentecost, meaning fiftieth day as a Jewish Festival predates the christian church; but came to have new meaning for the followers of Jesus after the event recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. (See Acts 2)

The Holy Spirit is with us daily, we come to an understanding through the lived experience of the abiding power and presence of God in our decision making and our actions.

We also experience the Holy Spirit in the context of the liturgy and in the liturgical year.

Mark Morozowich in a scholarly update draws our attention to the intimate link between Pentecost, cross and resurrection of Christ.

For him the unity of Pascha and Pentecost demonstrates the depth o f the myste ry o f Chr i s t and the interconnectedness of these events surrounding our salvation.

Morozowich states that there is then that central understanding of of the role of the Holy Spirit in the

!6

Page 7: Pentecost 2015

liturgical life of the assembly as we go through the liturgical year.

Sacred scripture helps us to connect the Holy Spirit to the great events in the life of Christ such as the incarnation, the baptism, the temptation in the wilderness, the teaching and healing ministry and of course the paschal events.

So likewise we locate the sacramental presence of the Holy Spirit in our rites of initiation, the making of our communion, which is intricately linked to initiation and and all of the other sacramental rites of the church.

We pray that the Holy Spirit would shed a ray of divine light on the church, our nation and the world so that the various institutions would be engaged in communication and dialogue.

It is only by allowing the wind of the Holy Sprit to flow through the corridors of church, home, school, the workplace and all other enterprises that the true humanity created in the image of God will be able to reason together.

May God almighty grant us peace at this blessed Pentecost.

Your friend and priest,

Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER By Sophia Marshall Being active can make you feel better, reduce your stress levels, keep your weight down and protect your health. Here are a few tips to help you become active and stay active:

TIPS FOR KEEPING ACTIVE

➢ Create opportunities for activity. Instead of trying to get that parking spot which is right near to the supermarket door, park your car farther away. If you usually catch the bus, get off one or two stops early and walk.

➢ Walk while you talk, if you're using a cellphone or cordless phone. You may be surprise at how much walking you do this way!

➢ Doing yard work or household chores counts as physical activity. Add some fun to it by turning on some upbeat music to help you do chores faster and speed up your heart rate.

➢ Use stairs instead of the elevator or escalator.

➢ Consider active vacations that will keep you moving, such as sightseeing on foot or bike.

➢ Don't let rainy weather keep you from exercising. You can find activities such as indoor fitness classes or exercising to a workout video. Make it more fun, invite friends or family members to join you.

➢ Want to do strength training but you don't have hand weights, then use canned foods or bottles filled with water or sand.

➢ Make your children/ grandchildren run around outside and do it with them. If there is no safe area to play on the outside, go to the nearest park or pasture.
