Applications are invited from eligible candidates from
Academics, Industry or ResearchOrganizations in India for full time
regular/ Part time Ph. D. programme for the session starting
from July 2012.

1 Eligibility for Admission
1.1 A candidate shall be considered eligible for registration
for the degree of Ph D provided
that the candidate satisfies one of the following:
i) Candidate must have obtained Bachelors degree and Masters
degree intechnology or engineering with minimum 60% marks (55%
marks in case of
reserved category) in either of the two or as equivalent
thereto.ii) Candidate is a teacher having full time teaching
experience of at least five years
and have inclination towards research which may judged with the
work carriedout by the candidate in the period of experience.
iii) A candidate from the research organizations or industry
shall be considered

eligible for registration for the degree of Ph D provided that
the candidate
satisfies the following:
a) Candidate must have obtained Bachelors degree and/orMasters
degree intechnology or engineering with minimum 60% marks.
b) Candidate must have five years experience in the field of
interest from thesponsoring organization.c) Shall have
visibility/acceptability of work by way of paper presentations
inreputed conferences, peer reviewed journals and/or research
project
completion in the field of interest.
d) NoC/sponsorship letter from the parent organization.e)
Candidate shall be selected for the joint research project from
sponsoring
organization. Infrastructural and financial support shall come
from the
sponsoring organization (Preferable with MoU between the
sponsoring
organizations and VJTI).f) Guidance shall be jointly done by a
faculty from the institute and Sr.
Scientist from the sponsoring research
organization/industry.
1.2 Candidates satisfying section 1.1(i) above shall only be
considered for Researchfellowship (teaching assistantship) as per
rules. The Research scholar with fellowship
shall be required to assist in teaching and research, as
assigned by the Institute, to the
extent of eight to ten hours of work load per week. (limited
seats will be offered forassistanceship through funded research
project of the departments only)
2 Selection process
2.1 The applicant has to undergo a written test as per the UGC
norms for Ph. D. program in
the concerned department. (see instructions for syllabus)
2.2 Department shall provide applicants with the details of
research areas and supervisors
in the department. The applicants shall have an opportunity to
discuss the area ofinterest with the respective faculty in the
department and can indicate their choices
regarding supervisor in order of preference.
2.3 The eligible candidates will have to undergo an interview by
a panel formed for the
purpose, including Head of the department and all eligible
research guides in the
department.
2.4 The recommendations of the interview panel will be forwarded
through respective
DPGCs to Dean Academics.
2.5 After approval process, the candidate will be informed
regarding selection and shall be
deemed fit for provisional admission to Ph. D. program of the
Institute.
2.6 Provisional admission shall be considered after payment of
fees to the account sectionand submission of the receipt to the
department office in stipulated time mentioned in
the schedule.
2.7 If candidate fails to do so within a specified time limit,
the admission offer shall stand
canceled and the candidate shall have no claim afterwards.

2.8 Candidate shall prepare the outline of the proposed research
work in consultation with
the guide/s and shall submit the same to respective DPGCs within
three month from
the date of provisional admission.
Registration process shall complete on the approval of the
proposal by PGAPEC and the
candidate shall be considered as a registered candidate for the
Ph D programme
(Provisionally for a year).
3 Exemption from the Written Test
3.1 The applicant who has appeared for the PET examination of
any conventional
Universities of State of Maharashtra and have valid PET score
shall be exempted from
the written examination for Ph D, conducted by the departments.
(Relevant documents
shall be attached in proof along with application).
3.2 The candidate with valid GATE score in the relevant field
shall be exempted from the
written examination for Ph D, conducted by the department.
(Relevant documents shall
be attached in proof along with application).
3.2 Approved teachers appointed in the University or its
affiliated colleges in the State ofMaharashtra, having not less
than Five years, Full time continuous teaching experience
after the date of First approval of appointment shall be
exempted from the written
examination for Ph D, conducted by the department. (The copy of
approval letter &
Experience certificate shall be attached in proof along with
application.)
4 Categories of Ph. D. candidates
The Institute admits Ph. D. candidates under following
categories:
4.1 Full-time research scholar
Institute research scholar- Shall be considered for research
fellowship through funded research
projects/teaching assistance.
Govt. / Semi-Govt. fellowship awardees- Shall be receiving
fellowship and contingency grant from supporting
organization
- Shall be released for full time research for three years on
full salary bythe organization.
Sponsored candidate- Shall be released by sponsoring
organization full time for three years
with full salary.
Self-financing
- Will not get any financial support from the Institute

4.2 Part-time research scholar
External sponsored candidate- Shall have to complete at least
one/two semester of residential
requirement at VJTI
- Shall have to work under VJTI Guide (internal) and/or external
guidefrom IIT or other research organizations (optional
withrecommendation from respective DPGCs).
- Shall produce no-objection certificate from parent
organization alongwith application.
4.3 Part-time Internal research scholar
- Shall have to work under VJTI Guide (internal) and/or external
guidefrom IIT or other research organizations (optional with
recommendation from DPGC).

6 Course credit requirements
6.1 All students registering for Ph D programme are required to
acquire minimum of 12
credits (03 theory courses including Research Methodology course
and a Seminar)
within first two semesters after provisional admission.

6.2 Candidate admitted under the clause 1.1(iii) for a programme
in the department with B
E/B Tech qualification has to undergo, all courses offered in
the first two semesters of
the M. Tech. programme in the specialization available in the
department, immediately
after admission (with recommendation of respective DPGC). In
addition the course on
research methodology shall be mandatory for such candidates. The
candidates shall be
deemed eligible for confirmation of registration after a year,
subject to his/heracquiring CPI of 6.0 and above in the course
work. If a candidate fails to fulfill the CPI
requirements, his/her provisional admission to the Ph D
programme shall stand
cancelled.
6.3 The course on research methodology will be compulsory for
all the research scholars
admitted in the Institute.
6.4 The courses may also be taken from other departments of VJTI
or from IIT on the advice
of the Guide and recommendation of respective DPGCs. (Internal
candidates shall
preferably register for the courses in IIT or other research
institutes.)
6.5 A Seminar shall be related to the field of research and
evaluation shall be done as per
the process of evaluation of Seminar in M. Tech. program and
carry maximum of 03credits.
6.6 The candidate should acquire a minimum CPI of 6.0 in the
registered courses for
confirmation of the registration to Ph. D. programme.
6.7 Students who fail to satisfy clause 6.6 within first year of
admission shall have to
discontinue the programme.
7 Research Progress Committee (RPC)
7.1 The DPGC will form at least three member Research Progress
Committee (RPC) for
every research scholar. RPC shall consist of members, who are
conversant with the field
of research and shall include;
- guide/s,- professor/approved guide from VJTI and- external
member from IIT or other R&D institutes of repute
The names of RPC members along with the courses to be completed
by the scholar shall
be communicated to PGAPEC within six months of provisional
admission to the
programme.
7.2 The research scholar shall submit progress report through
Guide, to the RPC at the end
of every year.
7.3 At the end of every year, the candidate will present the
work in Annual Progress
Seminar (APS) to the RPC, students and faculty. Such seminars
are required to be givenevery year until the submission of
synopsis.
7.4 The RPC will monitor the progress of research work of the
candidate until completion of
the programme.
7.5 The continuation of registration of scholar is subject to
satisfactory progress and
recommendation of respective RPC on annual basis.

7.6 The delay in submission of progress report and presentation
may lead to
discontinuation of Institute assistantship or/and cancellation
of registration for the
program.

Ph D Entrance Test
Ph D Entrance Test shall be conducted on 10th
July 2012 between 11.00 to 13.00 hours.
The test will consist of one paper of 100 marks in the relevant
discipline.
Pattern of question paper:
The question paper shall consist of three sections of
objective/multiple choice questions.Section I: Technical: Related
to specific discipline (40 marks)
Section II: Aptitude (30 marks)Section III: Logical &
Mathematical (30 marks)
Standard of passing:
Candidates securing fourty (40) or more marks in this test will
be declared as successful and will
be eligible for admission.
