Restrictions on the number of days an organization can hold Bingo were also lifted, and pre-draw Bingo—where players purchase concealed Bingo cards and numbers are randomly generated—is now allowed. Non-profits must still pur- chase licenses to offer Bingo. Bye-Bye Bingo Supplies, and Cheese Over a period of several months, Assump- tion of the Blessed Virgin Mary church in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, was robbed of thou- sands of dollars’ worth of Bingo supplies by someone with a key to the facility. The loss was so significant that the church’s Bingo had to be cancelled. Blind Player Demands Payment A Connecticut man who is blind claims that a local Bingo operator in New Hamp- shire accepted his Braille Bingo cards but did not pay up when he won a $20,000 jackpot. The man involved said he was visiting the area and went to play Bingo at local Bingo facility where games are run by charities, with a different organization for each of the four days the Bingo parlor is open. The charity running the games the day of the man’s win was a youth hockey organization. The player says he paid the required fees to play and was given per- mission to use his Braille Bingo cards, and even won a small prize, which was award- ed. But when he hit the $20,000 jackpot, he says the Bingo supervisor declared him the winner at first and congratulated him in front of everyone. Then, as some in the crowd started grumbling, he claims the supervisor started raising concerns. The youth hockey group says it is working with the state gaming commission to validate the win, at which point it will make a final determination of the player’s win. Bingo Comes to Martha’s Vineyard The U.S. Supreme Court has chosen not review a case regarding the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head’s (Aquinnah) plans to build a Bingo hall on Martha’s Vineyard, an island off of Cape Cod in Massachu-setts. The court decision left intact a federal appeals court decision, which said the 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act superseded the 1987 Massachusetts Set-tlement Act’s provisions restricting gam-ing. The tribe says it will build a “modest” class-two Bingo facility, with the long-term goal of creating a large casino facility on the mainland. Local representatives say they plan no further legal action to stop the gaming facility’s construction.

Knowing all this, it is not surprising that not one employer or co-worker, business person or other male has ever made an inappropriate pass at me, invited me out to dinner, or even made a suggestive re-mark…until last week. I never confi rm a friend on the computer unless I know the person, by name or repu-tation. I don’t know what went wrong, but this stranger knew how to get the attention of a plain Jane right off. “Is that you and your sister in your pro-fi le picture?” “The pretty one is my mother.” “You both are beautiful. Which one are you?” “I am on the left. This was taken in New York at Jack Dempsey Restaurant.” “I knew it. Can’t get that lovely smile out of my mind.” “Thanks.” “What is your profession?” “Oh, I play Bingo with a bunch of girls. By the way, that picture was taken over sixty years ago. Enjoyed our visit, but it’s time for my morning nap now.” Some friend. He didn’t even say good-bye.

Plain Jane gets Hit On My vision of myself has never been a problem for me. I am not, and have never been a raving beauty. I fi gured that out when I was sixteen and discovered that my eyebrows are almost invisible. The color of my hair has always been questionable—somewhere between the hue of butterscotch pudding and a faded dishrag. There were a couple times in life when I wanted to be thinner, or at least a bit dain-ty, but that just doesn’t fi t me so I went on with life a little on the “healthy” side. St. Francis de Sales says, “Be who you are and be that well.” People expect more of you if you are good lookin’—so I kind of go along with St Francis. I’ve never been to a manicurist. I’ve used a nail fi le and a handy clipper for years and if I needed a clip while away from home, I had my incisors. This was a good system until I got dentures. I could never sit still long enough for a manicure. A clotheshorse I am not. I recently shopped for a pair of shoes and the least expensive pair was $50. The last new pair I bought in 1965 was $14.95. That was for “top of the line” in those days, but I de-cided to splurge since I was in New York. My Mom never let me forget that I griped

Dear Aunt Bingo: My husband, Larry, passed away some years ago and my kids are all grown and scattered around the country living their busy lives. Because of this, when I reached retirement age in 2017, I decided to make a huge change and sell my house and move to Arizona—a place Larry and I had trav-elled to several times and had discussed maybe retiring to one day. It was a really big step for me: The town where I lived was all of eight miles away from the town where I was born, and I had lots of friends and wonderful support in Michigan. But I also had spinal issues, back problems and achy joints that made six months out of the year really hard to manage. My doctor strongly recommended that I move to a warmer, dryer area for the sake of my health and wellbeing. I discussed the idea with my kids, who were all for it, and with my friends in Michigan, who hated the idea of seeing me leave but understood I’d be healthier if I did. Plus, as one friend said, if I didn’t like it, there was nothing wrong with packing up and returning. My kids helped me shop for housing. I chose one of the condo developments rela-

tively close to Phoenix because I wanted to be near a city, but not too near. I was super nervous when moving day fi nally came, but within a week I was in my new home with all my stuff and pretty relieved and proud that I’d made such a big change. Every day I would venture out to get familiar with the area and get more com-fortable with my new home. Overall I was happy with everything, except that I began to regret that I hadn’t chosen one of the senior community settings, which had built in activities and places for meeting people and making new friends. I was getting a lit-tle lonely. One day I picked up a small community newspaper at the food store, which I fi g-ured would have listings for things going on around town. One of the fi rst ads I spot-ted was for Bingo right up the street from me. I hadn’t played Bingo since forever, and decided to go. It turned out to be a small charity Bingo in an activity hall and there were a lot of players my age. I bought my Bingo paper and dobbers and sat at an empty table. Af-ter several minutes, two ladies came to my table and asked if the seats were free and I said yes and they sat down. One of them asked me if I was new to the Bingo hall because she didn’t recall seeing me there before. I said that I was new to Bingo and the area and explained that I’d just moved here. They were very kind and welcoming, and it turned out that one of them lived in the same condo devel-opment I did. We chatted throughout Bingo and walked together back to the development after-ward. I was very excited and happy when they invited me to join them for lunch the following day. And just like that, thanks to a quick trip to Bingo, I met two of my dearest new Arizona friends who are help-ing me settle into my new home. So I am writing today to share my ex-

perience and encourage people who want to meet new people and maybe make some new friends to take a look around the Bin-go hall. It worked for me!Connie F., ArizonaDear Connie: Congratulations on your new life adven-ture! As I’m writing this, it is cold and gray outside and there’s a foot of fresh North-east snow on the ground. Needless to say, it makes me want to pack my bags and grab the next fl ight to sunny Arizona! Your letter makes an important point—along with chasing those cash jackpots, Bingo really is a great opportunity for get-ting out of the house, doing something so-cial and possibly making a new friend or two along the way. I highly recommend it! —Aunt Bingo

Recent evidence points to the important role of hearing health in maintaining qual-ity of life long-term. Better hearing starts in the brain. Your brain processes and interprets the sounds your ears receive. When you have hearing loss, your brain doesn’t get all the sound information it needs to understand what’s being said and it spends more energy try-ing to fi ll in the blanks. A study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that people with hearing loss who wear hearing aids had the same risk for age-related cognitive decline as people without hearing loss. When you actively use hearing aids, you are more likely to stay socially engaged, one of the primary ways to stimulate your brain. Like any exercise, the mental give-and-take of social interaction helps to keep your brain fi t and slows down accelerated cognitive decline. That’s the idea behind the BrainHear-ing™ technology built into Oticon hearing aids. With BrainHearing, Oticon hearing aids deliver sound with the clearest, purest signal possible — in the way your brain is best able to understand it. Because this innovative technology pre-serves the important details in speech, your brain doesn’t have to strain to fi ll in the gaps. There’s less effort involved in listen-ing. You enjoy a more natural, more effort-less listening experience, anywhere, any-time so you can stay active and engaged in all that life has to offer.

woman, showed up to fi nd out what was going on. The man repeated his story and this time the women in line stared him down but said nothing. The Bingo direc-tor then entered the men’s room, escorted the handful of women out, then let the men go in and use it. She then made a quick announcement asking any other men who needed to use the restroom to please come now, so that the overfl ow of women cus-tomers could use it. Two more male volunteers, one other male player, and I sheepishly slipped into the restroom. When we had fi nished, the director reopened the men’s room to the women. After about 15 minutes, everyone had done their business and was back in their seats for the second session. Before the session started, the Bingo director got on the loudspeaker and an-nounced that during the second intermis-sion, the men’s room would be for men fi rst, and afterward could be used by the women. I got stuck being bathroom door-man in case another clash erupted, which it didn’t. Lucky me. Do you think this incident was handled correctly? I personally felt that the women should never have been allowed into the men’s room in the fi rst place. Now, I’m concerned that this is going to happen eve-ry time there is Bingo. And what if this had happened in reverse and a group of men invaded/took over the ladies’ room? I’m sure all hell would have broken loose!Robert, Colorado

Hi Robert,In my opinion, these women were out of line in simply taking over the men’s re-stroom and then putting up a fi ght when men tried to use it. At the very least, one of them should have asked a person in charge if using the men’s room was okay; after that, some kind of supervised arrangement could have been put in place, as your Bin-go director arranged. To your second point: What if it had been men who took over a ladies room and banned a handful of women from using it?Frankly, I cannot imagine that happening in a million years. —Guy

Hi Guy, I am a Bingo volunteer and wanted to get your opinion on an incident that took place at our charity Bingo that caused a lot of trouble and ill will. During a recent Bingo night we had a large turnout. An unusual thing about it was that almost all the players were wom-en. The count was like 120 women and 5 men. We actually didn’t notice the gender count until at the end of the fi rst session and fi rst intermission. A large line formed at the women’s restroom and after a few minutes the men’s restroom was left un-occupied. Several of the female players noticed this and made a quick dash to the men’s bathroom. Eventually these quick dashes turned into a second line, even though there were only two stalls in the men’s room and one of those was for disa-bled. For 10 or so minutes no one had any issue with this, until one of the male pa-trons, an older gentleman, came over to use the men’s restroom. My understanding is that when he was confronted by the line of women at the men’s room door, he po-litely said he needed the facilities, but the women refused to give up the restroom. A second male player then walked up, de-manded to be let in, and the women again refused. The second man was much less polite than the fi rst, and began shouting that they had no right to be using the men’s room or blocking his entry. This angered some of the women, who began shouting back. I overheard the raised voices and ran over to see what the problem was. (In all honesty, I was about due to use the facili-ties myself.) The male player told me the women had taken over the men’s bathroom and refused to give it back. At this point, several of the women suggested (loudly) that the men should go urinate in the park-ing lot. I didn’t know what to do. But things were getting out of hand. That was when our Bingo director, a

Dear Mary Sue,Here’s one of my favorite recipes for swordfi sh. Don’t forget to marinate the swordfi sh at least one hour ahead of cook-ing. This swordfi sh recipe is from a very good restaurant. It is included in one of my many cookbooks. The fried grouper is moist and delicious. Enjoy! —Annie

New HorizonsDear Dream Guy, In my dream my good friend and I are at a carwash, waiting outside for my car to appear on the exit ramp of the wash. But it never arrives. We keep waiting for my car and then fi nally I go to fi nd the manager of the car wash to ask him what happened to my vehicle. And he says to me: “Lady, didn’t you see what all the commotion was about earlier? A little kid got into your car and drove away in the opposite direction.” I was so shocked I woke up from the dream instantly. What do you make of this?Fran M., Baltimore, MD

Dear Fran, Cars are important in dreams; very often a vehicle represents the manner in which we motor or maneuver our way through life–but in a very public way. Unlike cloth-ing, which is a much more personal ex-pression of our image, cars can symbolize how we strategize to get ahead, how we attempt to reach our goals directly, mov-ing from “Point A” to “Point B.” Because a small child took over your vehicle in your narrative, and ended up taking off in the “opposite direction,” it’s probably a good time to rethink how you’ve been formulat-

ing your goals—the path you have been following. The dream seems to suggest that you “wash away” your old efforts and return to the start of your journey to try out a fresh approach, which is what children often indicate in our dreams–new begin-nings. —Dream Guy

Dear Dream Guy, During Christmastime last year I dre-aed that I was alone on a beach but could see a very bright white star hanging over the horizon. Although time passed, the star never wavered or set. When my alarm went off for work I awoke with a deep sense of peace and joy. Was this just the holiday spirit moving through me?Rachel R., Seattle, WA

Dear Rachel, The simplicity of your dream is love-ly, and no less potent for it. Horizons and shorelines often mark a willingness to re-consider the entirety of one’s situation, be that a job, relationship or puzzling riddle. When we are moving about on land we have the option of going any direction we choose, but when we arrive at the ocean we pause, usually in awe of the grandeur of nature. A kind of time out. The unwavering star marks your dedication to seeing and exploring the unknown, to remain open to a revelation or new insight. That the star is constant in the sky indicates that a silent sort of spiritual guidance could be leading the way. What a wonderful holiday gift this dream gave you. —Dream Guy

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why do cats do what they do? Why do they tear orna-ments off the Christmas tree, knock glass-es off the coffee table, attack our shoelaces and knead their claws into our sweater? Is there any way to get mine to stop doing, like, all of these things? — Frayed Sweat-er, and Nerves, in Toronto

DEAR FRAYED: Having a cat means making a few compromises in your life, particularly in the interior-decorating department. It means being more care-ful about setting expensive glassware on the countertop. It means a Christmas tree whose bottom third remains undecorated, or adorned with unbreakable, pet-safe or-naments. It means patiently retying your shoelaces after your cat has pounced on them. It means buying a new sweater eve-ry fall, or keeping your favorite ones in a drawer to wear on special occasions only. The tradeoff, however, is that you have a companion for many happy years. A cat kneading his or her claws on your sweater while curled up in your lap is an expres-sion of contentment, an acknowledgment that you’re family. You don’t have to give up all the breakable things that you love in order to live with your cat, you just need to make a few concessions to keep both your cat and your glassware safe.

The unknown soul who made the fol-lowing sage observation must have been a keen observer of events: “A politician can appear to have his nose to the grindstone while straddling a fence and keeping both ears to the ground.”

In the 17th century, a Frenchman opened a coffee shop in London and sold chocolate, newly imported from the Amer-icas, for 10 to 15 shillings a pound. That may not sound like much until you learn that at the time, the going price of a pound gold was 20 to 30 shillings.

Are you interested in pogonotrophy? If you’re a woman, the answer is probably no. The word, derived from the Greek word “pogon,” or “beard,” and the suffi x “tro-phy,” or nourishment, refers to the growing of a beard.

Most people realize that many places in the United States were once known by different names. Here’s a sam-pling: the Potomac River was originally called Conococheague Creek, Camp David was named Shangri-La, and the USA itself was once known as the United States of Congress Assembled.

Good news for the not-so-neat among us: Making your bed could be bad for you. A study done in the United Kingdom at Kingston University showed that the lin-ens of an unmade bed retain less moisture, therefore making them less attractive to dust mites.

When you say the words “Roswell, New Mexico,” many people instantly think of UFOs and alien beings. Well, let me tell you this: Roswell may be best known for what some people say was a spaceship landing back in 1947, but today it’s a thriv-ing community, full of extremely friendly people and a great Bingo hall. I have often suggested in this monthly column that if you are planning on visiting a city, check on the Internet to see if it has Bingo. When I knew I was fi nally getting to Roswell, that’s exactly what I did. I found that a civic club called Sertoma has Bingo three times a week. Its Wednesday night Bingo coincided perfectly with my stay in “Alien City.” When I went to the buy-in window I was a little confused. The entire evening was going to consist of only eight games, the last of which was a cover-the-card. When I said I was from out of town, the woman at the window gave me a free dauber. Of course, I picked yellow.I soon found that although only eight games would be played on the pack I purchased, there were an additional 20 “side games,” those little cards that contain a small group of numbers. Bingo numbers are called and the aim is to Bingo on the small card.

Sounds simple? It isn’t. The odds are actually worse, in some ways than a tra-ditional Bingo game. So, combine the eight “regular” games with the 20 “side games” and it became a full evening. The club’s Bingo hall was large, well lighted, and full of some really fun peo-ple. And, this time around, I thought I would have some fun. I didn’t tell anyone that I have been playing Bin-go since 1957, or that I was a national Bingo columnist. I let the people sitting near me think that I really was new at our favorite game. They could not have been more helpful. An older fellow sitting across from me pre-marked my cards with the patterns for the night. Again, I played dumb. It became genuine fun. I got to sample just how much the folks there really liked Bingo and the way they took their time to make sure that I knew exactly what was going on. I can’t complain about the fact that I was never even close at any time that night. After all, I keep preaching that you “play Bingo for the fun of it, not to win.” I welcome your comments to: [email protected]. I would es-pecially love to hear your experiences in small halls in out-of-the-way places. For my money, Bingo in big halls can be both fun and lucrative; but, for my money, it’s small-town Bingo that is the best.

Mega Millionaire at Age TwentyFlorida Man Hits A Big OneA 20-year-old Florida man is the lone win-ner of a $451 million Mega Millions jack-pot. Shane Missler, who bought the ticket in Port Richey, Florida, chose a one-time, lump sum payment of $281.9 million. “I'm only 20, but I hope to use it to pursue a variety of passions, help my family and do some good for humanity,” Missler says He added that he wasn’t surprised that he had won and that he had a “feeling” that he might. His winning numbers were 28, 30, 39, 59 and 70, with Mega Ball number 10. Missler’s win is the sixth largest jackpot ever by a single lottery ticket.

Wrong Ticket Leads to Right DecisionOksana Zaharov of Edgewater, New Jersey, was shopping in New York City when she asked a clerk for a $1 New York Lottery scratch-off ticket. He mistakenly handed her a $10 Set For Life ticket, and Zaharov immediately realized the mistake. “When the clerk handed me the wrong ticket I felt bad, so I decided to just go ahead and buy it,” the 46-year-old mother of two says. “I actually used the ticket as a bookmark for a couple weeks before I decided to scratch it.” When she did, Zaharov discovered she had won $5 million—which she will re-ceive over 20 years, plus annual net sums of more than $172,000 after that for the rest of her life. “I never win anything,” she says. “I was sure the ticket was fake. wasn’t until I brought it into the offi ce that I knew it was for real.” Zaharov plans to take her family on a vacation to the Baha-mas and fund her children’s college educa-tions with her winnings.

Michigan Man Scores $1.3 MillionInvestments and retirement are on the mind of a Monroe County, Michigan, man who won $2 million playing the Multiplier Spectacular instant game. “I scratched the ticket at home and couldn’t really believe what I was seeing,” says the player who chose to remain anonymous. “I called for my wife to come read the ticket and when she saw it, her eyes lit up so I knew we were winners.” The 56-year-old man said he thought about how to handle the big win before cashing in his ticket, the prize for which he took as a one-time lump-sum of $1.3 million. “It’s an awesome feeling to win. You never think this is going to happen to you, and it’s amazing when it does.”

Trees for Good FortuneHundreds of people have been visiting Buddhist temples in Thailand to thank their local goddesses for past lottery prizes and seek more lucky numbers before the next government lottery draw. One such temple is Wat Proi Fon, where lottery enthusiasts gathered and placed colored fabrics, betel leaves and nuts, syrup and boiled eggs near a Ta-khian tree. (Locals believe that deities live in Ta-khian trees and grant favors to those who ask.) They burned incense and prayed for lucky numbers before applying powder to the tree trunk and then rubbing its bark to reveal what appeared to be dig-its. At Wat Pa Khlong temple, a huge crowd gathered at a local shrine near another big Ta-khian tree. Many visitors brought tradi-tional Thai costumes to thank the goddess of the tree for past lottery prizes. A staff member at the temple said it had received more than 300 such costumes and planned to donate them to area schools.

The following seven tips will improve your bottom line the next time you visit a casino. Tip #1.You can always tell if a video poker machine is worth playing by look-ing at the payoff schedule on the machine. For example, for a Jacks or Better (draw poker) game, ideally the single coin pay-off for the full house and flush should be 9/6 respectively (these machines return 99.54% with perfect play). Every decrease by one in either the full house or flush single coin payoff decreases the return by roughly 1.1%. So an 8/6 pay schedule would return only 97.3%. Be smart and check the pay schedules before you play. Tip #2. Suppose you’re playing a Jacks or Better video poker machine and you get this hand: 5d 7d 5c 2d 9d. How would you play it? You have two choices: keep the 4-card flush, or keep the pair of 5’s. The correct play is to keep the four-card flush and draw one card. If instead your hand contained a high pair (J’s – Aces) rather than a low pair, then you should keep the high pair and draw three cards. Remember this rule: Keep a high pair over four-card

flush and the latter over a low pair. Tip #3. You are playing blackjack and you have a 16 against a dealer upcard of 10. You say under your breath, “Ahh Shoot,” but you’ve still got to make a play. But what’s best, to stand or hit? It depends. If the casino offers surrender, then surrender is your best play. If surrender is not avail-able then you are slightly better off hitting rather than standing. One exception: If your 16 is made up of 3 (or more) cards, then standing is the better play. Tip #4. Many novice craps players like to wager on the Big 6 and 8. The rules for winning are simple. If you bet on the Big 6, you win if the 6 is rolled and lose if instead a 7 is rolled (same rules for Big 8). You can make the same bet in craps that pays more! Where? Make a Place bet on 6 or 8. A win-ning 6 or 8 Place bet pays 7-6, whereas a winning Big 6 or 8 bet pays only 1-1 (or even money). Tip #5. If you are not sure of your black-jack or video poker playing strategy, bring a strategy card with you when you play and refer to it. They are casino legal. Tip #6. There is plenty of solid informa-tion on blackjack, craps, video poker, and other casino games on the Internet that is free to read. I recommend www.wizardo-fodds.com and www.888casino.com/blog. At the latter site, you’ll find strategy guides on blackjack, roulette, craps, video poker, and slots that are free to read. Tip #7. If you like to play slots, you’ll get more bang for your bucks by playing traditional three- and five-line games rath-er than progressive games. The latter ad-vertise huge Jackpots with very long odds of winning; moreover, the overall return on a progressive game is much lower than a non-progressive game.

Don’t Eat This if You’re Taking ThatDear Savvy Senior, If the prescription label says “take with meals,” does it matter what you eat? I cur-rently take eight different medications for various health problems and would like to know if there are any foods I need to avoid.—Over Medicated

Dear Over, It depends on the medication. Many meds should be taken with food–any food–to in-crease their absorption and reduce the risk of side effects. But some foods and medi-cations can interact, reducing the medica-tions’ effectiveness or increasing the risk of harmful side effects. To stay safe, you should always talk to your doctor or pharmacist to learn the ins and outs of your prescriptions, along with what foods and beverages to avoid while you’re on it. In the meantime, here are some foods you should stay away from for some commonly prescribed drugs.

Cholesterol Medications: If you take a certain statin drug to control high choles-terol like Liptor, Zocor, Altoprev, Meva-cor, or generics atorvastatin, simvastatin or lovastatin, you should avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice. Grapefruit can raise the level of the drug in your bloodstream and increase the risk of side effects, especially leg pain.

Blood Pressure Medicine: If you take an ACE inhibitor drug like Capoten, Vasotec, Monopril, Zestril and others to lower your blood pressure, you should limit food that contains potassium like bananas, oranges, tomatoes, spinach and other leafy greens, sweet potatoes, and salt substitutes that contain potassium. ACE inhibitors raise the body’s potassium levels. Eating too many potassium rich-foods while taking an ACE inhibitor can cause an irregular heartbeat and heart palpitations.Blood Thinning Medications: If you are taking Coumadin, Jantoven, or the ge-neric warfarin, you should limit kale and other greens, including broccoli, cabbage, spinach, and brussels sprouts that contain

vitamin K. These foods can block the ef-fects of these blood-thinning medications putting you at risk for developing blood clots. You also need to watch out for garlic, ginger, vitamin E and fish oil supplements because they can increase these medica-tions blood-thinning abilities putting you at risk for excessive bleeding.

Antidepressants: If you take a monoam-ine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepres-sant like Marplan, Nardil, Emsam, Par-nate, or generic isocarboxazid, phenelzine, selegiline or tranylcypromine, avoid aged cheeses, chocolate, cured meats and al-coholic drinks. These contain tyramine, which can raise blood pressure. Normally, the body controls tyramine levels with an enzyme called monoamine oxidase, but the MAOI antidepressant block that enzyme.Thyroid Medications: If you take a medi-cation for hypothyroidism like Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid or generic levothy-roxine, you should avoid eating tofu and walnuts, and drinking soymilk. All these can prevent your body from absorbing this medicine.

Anti-Anxiety Medications: If you take medication for anxiety like Xanax, Klono-pin, Valium, Ativan, or generic alprazolam, clonazepam, diazepam or lorazepam, you should avoid alcohol. These medications act as sedatives, binding with the brain’s natural tranquilizers to calm you down. But when you mix these drugs with al-cohol, the side effects intensify, and can cause you to feel lightheaded, sleepy and forgetful.

Antibiotics: If you’re taking an antibiotic like Sumycin, Dynacin, Monodox, or ge-neric tetracycline, doxycycline or minocy-cline, you should avoid dairy–milk, yogurt, and cheese, and calcium supplements and fortified foods–for a couple hours before and after taking the medicine. Calcium in dairy products binds to the antibiotic and prevents your body from absorbing it, making it ineffective. To find more dietary guidance on the drugs you take, see reliable health sites like MedlinePlus.gov or MayoClinic.org, or consider the excellent new AARP book Don’t Eat This If You’re Taking That: The Hidden Risks of Mixing Food and Medi-cine available at Amazon.com for $11.

Meatloaf: The Ultimate Comfort Food There’s no disputing the power of food to provide consolation in times of stress, and a classic meatloaf is no exception. There are very few dishes that combine tradition and innovation the way that meatloaf does. My husband, Michael, loves meatloaf, and evidently, he’s not alone. Statistically, affl uent baby boomers or-der the entree on a regular basis when din-ing out. Whether it’s made from ground beef combined with pork or veal, or a more modern version featuring ground turkey or chicken, meatloaf is at the top of the list of comfort foods. It’s about time this humble dish got the recognition it deserves. It takes about 1 1/2 pounds of ground meat to make a meatloaf that serves six people. I’ve found that “marinating” the ground meat in a bowl with 1/4 cup of wa-ter, a tablespoon of mild to medium salsa, and a tablespoon each of Worcestershire sauce and steak sauce makes for a moister, more fl avorful meatloaf. I season my meatloaf with salt, pepper, minced bell pepper, garlic, onions and 1/2 of a shredded carrot, along with fresh herbs including parsley, thyme and basil or a ta-blespoon of dried Italian Seasoning. A cup of a starch or binder is the next component in a classic meatloaf. I use sea-soned breadcrumbs or crushed crackers, and an egg. A gentle touch when combining the mixture ensures that the meatloaf will be well-seasoned without being tough. The fi nal step in making a traditional meatloaf is adding the “gravy.” I combine ketchup with salt, pepper and medium salsa or barbecue sauce. I pour off any accumu-lated fat, and then slather the topping on the meatloaf halfway through the cooking process. Meatloaf isn’t a complex dish, nor does it make a visually stunning presentation. As a friend of mine once said, “It’s a lot of meat in a loaf, and you don’t have to chew it very much — what’s not to like?”

Meatloaf has provided a tasty way to stretch a dollar for generations of Ameri-can families. In these uncertain economic times, we could all use a plate full of com-fort.

MINI-MEATLOAVES The great thing about this recipe from the Betty Crocker kitchens (www.betty-crocker.com/recipes) is that the mini meat-loaves provide individual servings and are ready in just 30 minutes. This would make a great main-course dish for children or a unique appetizer for a retro recipe party.

1/2 cup ketchup1/2 tablespoon packed brown sugar1 pound lean (at least 80 percent) ground beef1/2 pound ground pork1/2 cup Original Bisquick mix1/4 teaspoon pepper1 small onion, fi nely chopped (1/4 cup)1 egg

1. Heat oven to 450 F. In small bowl, stir ketchup and brown sugar until mixed; re-serve 1/4 cup for topping. In large bowl, stir remaining ingredients and remaining ketchup mixture until well-mixed.2. Spray 13-by-9-inch pan with cooking spray. Place meat mixture in pan; pat into 12-by-4-inch rectangle. Cut lengthwise down center and then crosswise into sixths to form 12 loaves. Separate loaves, using spatula, so no edges are touching. Brush loaves with reserved 1/4 cup ketchup mix-ture.3. Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until loaves are no longer pink in center and meat ther-mometer inserted in center of loaves reads 160 F. Serves 6.

Substitution: While the mixture of ground beef and pork gives these little loaves a unique fl avor, you can also use 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef instead of the mixture.

Good for You and Others Too Have you broken your New Year’s reso-lutions yet? It’s not too late to try again. But this time, why not go with just two? One for you, and one for others.

Here are a few for you:* Give the local American Legion or Vet-erans of Foreign Wars a try if you’re not a regular member. You’ll get out of it what you put in. Participate in the events and help with their goals, especially if they in-volve helping other veterans.* Organize your paperwork so that when the time comes, your fi nal wishes will be known. See a lawyer and make a will, then gather your military paperwork, and let someone know where it is. Include your DD-214. * Ask questions to be sure you’re getting

all the benefi ts you’re entitled to. Home loans, education and medical are just the tip of the iceberg.

And a few for others:* Plan a visit to the closest Department of Veterans Affairs hospital to see how you can help. Contact voluntary services and see what they need. If you’re not near a medical center, search online for “veterans helping veterans.”* If you served during a war period, look into adding your story to the Veterans His-tory Project. The stories of veterans are valuable (and so is yours) and can be told in many ways. Go online to www.loc.gov/vets/ and see how how you can partici-pate. * Decide to be a monthly Secret Santa and anonymously send a grocery store gift card to a veteran you know is struggling, espe-cially if there are kids in the family. If it seems like some of the ideas above are a combination of good for you and good for others too, you’re right. Sometimes do-ing for others actually benefi ts us as well.

Arma won $600 on the Betty Boop at Palmas Del Sol East.

Q: I really like the girl who plays the sis-ter on The Goldbergs and think she has a wonderful voice. Will she try to pursue a career in singing as well as acting? — Den-ise W., via emailA: Hayley Orrantia, who plays Erica Gold-berg on the hilarious family comedy that centers on the trials and tribulations of growing up in the 1980s, began singing as a child and recorded her own songs at the age of 14. In 2011, she was a contestant on the fi rst season of The X-Factor and was eliminated in week fi ve. When she was cast as Erica in The Goldbergs in 2013, crea-tor/writer Adam F. Goldberg heard about her singing talent, and he incorporated that into her character. Hayley will be going on the road this spring in the Strong, Sweet and Southern Tour. She has been building up her coun-try/pop music career and is excited to get out and perform for her fans. Says Hayley: “I couldn’t be more excited to get a chance to meet everyone and share music that has been deeply inspired by this wild last year of my life. I’m looking forward to meet-ing and personally thanking the fans who have followed my musical journey from the beginning, and those who have found me through The Goldbergs.” Go to hayley-orrantia.com to see if she’ll be performing near you.

‘Kilroy Was Here’ Remember hearing “Kilroy was here”? Kilroy is a famous “doodle” seen during World War II. No one is sure exactly where it began, but in about 1939, the comic man looking over a fence while poking his nose and hands over it with the words “Kilroy was here” started to appear. The doodles were found in strange places where sol-diers were stationed. The character may have been inspired by an earlier bit of graffi ti used by Australians during World War I with the words “Foo was here.” He reappeared in the next war from 1941 to 1945. Kilroy graffi ti was found in barracks, inside submarines, and, it is claimed, on the beaches at Normandy when the troops landed for the famous battle. “Kilroy was here,” with or without the doodle, still is part of American slang and has appeared in TV shows, movies and even songs in this century. The face over the fence has been made into inexpensive three-dimensional, carnival chalkware fi g-ures and even banks. A red plaster bank was one of several Kilroy pop-art items featured in a Hakes auction in 2016. It sold for $168.37, probably to someone who re-members seeing a Kilroy message years ago.

Pilot Takes Flight in Lucrative TournamentBy Chad Holloway

In October, the World Poker Tour’s Best-bet Bounty Scramble main event drew 323 players to Jacksonville, Florida. The battle for the $315,723 winner’s prize came down to Paul Petraglia, a local player and airline pilot by trade, and defending tournament champion Sam Panzica. Petraglia had never cashed in a poker tournament for more than $20,000, while Panzica was a seasoned pro with more than $3.7 million in live tournament earnings over his career. It was a David vs. Goliath story, and the result was similar to the bib-lical tale, as Petraglia managed to fell the poker giant. In what would be the final hand of the tournament, the blinds were 75,000-150,000 with an ante of 25,000 when Pet-raglia raised to 350,000 holding 9s 7s and Panzica defended with Jh 3h. The flop came down 8h 6h 5d. Panzica checked, and Petraglia bet 400,000.Panzica, who was sitting with 2.35 million behind, had too large a stack to move all in on the flop. (A shove would have been for more than three times the pot.) As such, he had checked with the intention of check-raising with his flush draw. Petraglia’s bet allowed Panzica to do that, and of course Petraglia snap-called, having flopped the

nut straight. Panzica needed a heart to win, but he was left wanting as the 8c blanked on the turn, followed by the 2c on the river. With that, Panzica was eliminated in second place for $210,783, while Petraglia celebrated his championship and saw his name inscribed on the WPT Champions Cup. In hindsight, could Panzica have played his hand any differently so as not to go bust? Given that J-3 suited is a weak hand, he could have folded preflop. However, it was heads-up play, and he was in the big blind. It’s important to loosen your range in the final stage of a tournament, especially when you have a good amount of chips in-vested in the hand. A fold wouldn’t have been terrible, but most experienced tour-nament players would have called in that spot. Once two hearts come down on the flop, the hand pretty much played itself. Panzi-ca had the opportunity to move all in, but he didn’t want to chase out weak hands. He’d rather feign weakness with a check and have his opponent put in a continua-tion bet. That way, when his opponent does have weak holdings (which is most of the time), Panzica is picking up extra chips by check-raising. Another choice Panzica had was to just call and see if a heart appeared on the turn. However, when you’re the short stack, playing a strong draw passively while out of position is not a recipe for success. You’re prone to just bleed off chips when you miss and not get paid when you hit. In this hand, Panzica did what almost any pro would do. He allowed his opponent to commit some chips before jamming to maximize both value and fold equity. Un-fortunately for him, Petraglia had flopped the nuts and had an easy call. The rest was up to the poker gods.
