The first tournament held Oct. 24, 2002, was hosted by Eagle Lake Middle School (ELMS). Students competing were Alan Shaw, Mateo Navarro, Daniel Good- win, Danny Shimek, Yolanda Cisneros, Jose Tellez, Eddie Losoya, George Pierce, Frank Cisneros, Lorenzo Mari- scal, Martin Vazquez and Sean Koren- ek. The two students who ended up in the championship round were Vazquez and Shimek. Shimek won a hard fought round. All of the students played a great game. The next tournament took place Jan. 25 at the Boys and Girls Club in Wharton. Feb. 22, the team participated in the Grand Championship Round at the Boys and Girls Club. In boys/girls ages 5-8, Rebecca Dornak was champion, playing against Chris Wesselski; girls 9-12, Lauren Shimek, champion vs Brittani Barlett; boys 9-12, Goodwin, champion vs Trent Popp, Cisneros and Joshua Churchwell; boys 13-16, Tellez, cham- pion vs Shimek; All Around Girls Champion, L. Shimek; All Around Boys Champion and Tournament Champion, Tellez. Chess Club sponsors are Ron Kari- ker, High School Club; Lois Raabe, ELMS; and chess teacher is Tony Tyler.
