Simple Ways to Manage Pain

To help reduce and prevent pain, try these easy tips to keep you doing the

things you love while helping minimize pain and keeping that spring in your

step this winter:

Sit Tall: If you have a desk job, proper posture can help to reduce back pain

as you age. Sit with your back straight with your shoulders back; distribute

your body weight evenly on both hips, bend your knees at right angles and

keep your feet flat on the floor.

Be Flexible: Whether it’s weekly yoga, or standing up and stretching

between long periods of sitting, flexibility can help you stay fit and strong.

One simple stretch: stand with your feet shoulder width apart, place hands

on your lower back with finger tips pointing down, slowly lean back as far

as comfortable while looking up at the ceiling, then return to start. Repeat

five times.

Eat Smart: Reduce the risk of inflammation by incorporating anti-

inflammatory foods such as tomatoes, olive oil, nuts, fatty fish, fruits and

vegetables into your diet as much as possible.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Diabetic Foot Ulcers Deservedly Feared DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is an 84-year-old diabetic. He has had a wound on his foot (on the inner side of his right foot, near his big toe) for about five months. He has been treated by a podiatrist, who has debrided the wound every week. He prescribed antibiotics when the wound has looked infected. A visiting nurse and my mother have changed and dressed the wound regularly during these months.

This week, the podiatrist said he could see the bone in my dad’s foot, and recommended hyperbaric treatment. Could you tell me what your opinion is of this treatment in my father’s case? Do you know if it has a high percentage of success? -- C.O.

ANSWER: Foot ulcers in diabetes are common and feared. Diabetes damages blood vessels, both large and small. Also, longstanding diabetes decreases the effectiveness of the inflammatory response and immune system. Finally, poor nerve function in people with diabetes combines with these other factors to predispose one to developing breakdown of the skin and development of ulcers. These ulcers can get large and deep, and when the bone is visible (and sometimes even when it’s not), the bone is infected. In this case, there is a high risk of the need for amputation.

By far, the best way to deal with diabetic foot ulcers is to not get them in the first place. Good control of diabetes, proper footwear, regular checks by a professional and daily self-checks of the feet for people at high risk can reduce the likelihood of developing ulcers. Early and aggressive treatment of precursor lesions, even mild redness of the skin, ingrown toenails or fungal infection of the feet, should prompt urgent evaluation by a podiatrist.

Once the ulcer has progressed to the point where your dad’s is now, aggressive measures are called for. In addition to care by a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon, evaluation by a vascular surgeon and a wound-management specialist may be limb- and even life- saving.

While hyperbaric oxygen has indeed been shown to be beneficial in several studies (reducing amputation rate from 33 percent to 9 percent in one study), only an expert with detailed knowledge of your dad’s case can decide whether this is appropriate treatment. If you trust your podiatrist, I think it may well be a useful treatment. However, I would be sure that he, or a vascular surgeon, has looked at the quality of blood flow to the foot.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your position on the shingles vaccine for people in their 70s? We have been told that some doctors do not approve of it. Yet we know of so many people who suffered terribly from shingles. Thank you. -- J.T.

ANSWER: I’ve written about the vaccine lots of times. I am a strong believer in it and think anyone over 60 should get it unless they have a medical reason not to. The older you are, the more important it is to get the shot, since the complication of pain (postherpetic neuralgia) is so devastating and tends to lasts longer the older you are.

***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger.

Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.

Christmas wrapping is

done…THANK YOU, Thank

You – thank you to the

person who came up with

the gift bag idea…they’re

great!

The red building with the

animal silhouettes just

south of the Lima four

corners always puts a smile

on my face! Thanks to the

Lima Veterinary Center for

having it done.

Thank you to Daniele for

organizing the Christmas

boxes for the Livonia Food

Pantry and for her work all

year long. Also thank you to

the others in local towns

who head up their pantries.

Many thanks to those who

donate to their local food

pantries. I always hope that

the families getting food

boxes truly appreciate the

donations of food and time

by their “neighbors.” P.S. –

Please do not donate

expired items as they can’t

be used.

The PHS Board of Trustees

would like to thank the

many individuals,

organizations, and area

businesses, including many

Fairport-Perinton Merchants

Association members, who

donated fifty-eight beautiful

decorated trees, wreaths,

gift baskets and other

unique items for their

second annual “Yuletide

Traditions” fundraiser. Very

generous bidding on the

items during the three week

silent auctions ultimately

netted over $2100 (a 62%

increase over last year!) to

support future PHS

educational programs and

activities as well as exhibits

and operation of the

Fairport Museum.

I am a senior and was

going thru the drive thru

at Taco Bell in Penfield on

Friday 1/8/16 around 1:30

PM. When I got to the

window to pay I was told

the car ahead had paid for

my lunch. Thank you so

much to the driver of the

yellow car. What a

thoughtful thing to do and it

was so appreciated. I will

pass it on.

Disappointed about my

home town; when I drive

through our town, it makes

me sad. Our Christmas

wreaths are pathetic. I have

been to a lot of towns that

look amazing, but when I

drive in my town all I want

to say is omg.... The wreaths

are puny and half are not

even lit. Shame on you for

even putting them up; this

town does not put any effort

at all to make it look

welcoming. If I did not live

here I would just drive on.

Please, next year, put some

effort in to making our town

nice. Again, shame on you

and I think you all know

what town I am talking

about.

To the person who stole

our Siamese kitten/cat on

Saturday 12-26: What were

you thinking? She was loved

and taken care of. Please

return her! Just drop her off

like you took her.

Broken hearts in Bristol

Thank you to those who

throughout the Christmas

Holiday wished everyone a

“Merry Christmas.” I’m so

sick of the political

correctness. Bullying by a

few to change the ways of

all. There’s hope for

common sense yet.

To ALL people driving who

stop in the middle of a

busy road to make a right

hand turn. ... what are you

thinking? There’s no traffic

light, no yield sign and

there is no stop sign.....Did

you get your license from a

Cracker Jack box? A right

hand turn is a smooth

motion...no reason to come

to a screeching halt and

look 4 ways!!

To those with roadside

memorials... We are truly

sorry for your loss but “take

it to the grave.” Imagine if

everyone set up roadside

memorials....there would be

no place to walk. Leaving

them up for 3 to 5 years or

replenishing them is not fair

to the community. That’s

what grave sites are for and

what YOU paid for; please

move your memorials to the

grave and out of public

domain.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Jan. 28, 1973, a cease-fire goes into effect in Saigon,

Vietnam, but military operations quickly resumed after each side

claimed the other had violated the truce. What resulted was an

almost endless chain of retaliations, averaging 2,980 combat

incidents per month.

Marge, like some people her age, can’t drive anymore. She gave up her keys. But she could use a lift... a visit to a doctor, a trip to the grocery store, a stop at the bank. If you have a couple of hours a month to help, please call us to volunteer. We’ll provide you with training and supplemental insurance.

LIFESPAN 244-8400, ext. 142

Age doesn’t have to stop older men and w omen from enjoying their favorite sports. In fac t, remaining ac tive can improve physical and mental health. If a doctor has confirmed that it is okay to partic ipate in sports, these activities can help men and w omen 50 and older enjoy friendly competition and physical activity.

Renovations for senior safety As adults approach their golden years, the homes they once

thought of as sanctuaries can become unsafe. Families wrestle with the decision to keep parents and grandparents in their homes or move them into assisted living facilities or other senior residences.

Modifying seniors’ homes to make them safer is another option. The National Institute on Aging says that families may be able to have a senior stay at home by helping older relatives remain independent but safe. The following are a few ways to do just that.

• Remove fall hazards. The NIA reports that six out of 10 falls happen at home, where people spend the most time and fail to think about their safety. Seniors who want to be independent may overestimate their physical abilities. Because falls can be so dangerous, leading to cuts, abrasions, broken bones, and more, seniors and their families must take steps to prevent falls in homes. Improve lighting, especially at night when sight may become diminished. Install hand rails and grab bars where possible. Pick up clutter and remove tripping hazards, such as slippery rugs or electric cords. Install an electric stair climbing seat to make traversing stairs less risky.

• Improve visibility and ability to communicate. Vision loss may accompany aging, but technology can help mitigate such losses. Use big-button phones, remote controls and even keyboards so seniors can keep in touch. Voice-activated thermostats or smart home technology also can make it easier for seniors to voice their needs.

• Modify fixtures and other features. Dexterity may wane with age, and arthritis can make grasping or turning doorknobs and faucets more challenging. Take inventory of areas of the home that present the biggest obstacles to seniors.

Replace knobs in the shower or on faucets with lever handles, which are easier to maneuver. Install new cabinets and doors that freely glide open and self-close. Replace toggle light switches with easier paddle-type switches that can be pushed with a hand or even arm. Motion-sensor lights also can be handy. Push-button oven controls may make cooking easier.

• Prepare for medical emergencies. Invest in medical alert systems, such as necklaces or bracelets, that can be used to contact police or emergency medical personnel directly. Make phones available in commonly used rooms in the home, such as bedrooms, the living room, bathrooms, and the kitchen.

• Install ramps and nonslip flooring. Ramps can make it easier to reach the front door or cross over elevated doorway thresholds. Nonslip flooring also can prevent falls around the house, offering more traction for feet, walkers or canes.

• Repair cracks in walkways and driveways. Safety should also extend to the outdoors. Be sure to repair cracks or uneven pavement. Replace loose patio blocks or bricks with a more stable design or with concrete or asphalt. While outdoors, trim back bushes and make sure there are no tripping hazards outside as well.

A few modifications can make it possible for seniors to live comfortably in their homes for many years.

PENNY SAVER ONLINE POLL:

Was Sean Penn wrong to interview notorious Mexican fugitive El Chapo?

Should stores stop selling products that contain plastic microbeads? Yes! They are terrible for the environment. 52.9% (17 votes)

Why bother? Products will still be sold at other businesses. 14.7% (5 votes)

Maybe, but we should also update our wastewater treatment plants. 23.5% (8 votes)

No. The 2017 ban on microbead manufacturing will take care of it. 8.8% (3 votes)

Total votes: 33 votes Comment of the week: How did the EPA and FDA ever allow them to be used in the first place??

Yes. The interview glorifies a criminal. It depends on how good the article is. No. It was a stunningly gutsy thing to do. Not if Penn helped lead to El Chapo’s capture!

Pittsford Hockey to Play 7th Annual Pink the Rink Games

On Saturday, January 23, 2016, the Pittsford High School Hockey teams will play their seventh annual games to benefit cancer. The games will be held at the Gene Polisseni Center located at Rochester Institute of Technology, 51 Lomb Memorial Dr., Rochester. The Pittsford Panthers will host the Victor Blue Devils, with the Junior Varsity game beginning at 5:00 PM and Varsity game at 7:00PM.

The seventh annual “Pittsford Panthers Pink the Rink” hockey games are the culmination of season-long cancer awareness fundraising efforts. The Pittsford JV and Varsity teams will be sporting pink jerseys and socks as a show of support in the fight against breast cancer. Many of the jerseys have initialed patches on the back. These jerseys were sponsored in memory or in honor of a loved one. All net proceeds from the Pink

games will benefit the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester.

Over the past 6 years Pittsford Hockey has donated over $32,000 from these Pink the Rink games. Pittsford Hockey continues in the effort to make these games an annual community event. Student involvement in the event has stretched beyond the hockey team and included high school students selling presale game packages and bracelets, and many local businesses and individuals contributing time and sponsorship funds.

In addition to the games there will be special activities which include a chuck a puck contest, the RIT pep band, pink spirit wear sales of T-shirts and bracelets, and a special appearance by our Pittsford Panther! Admission is $5 for both games. More information is available at www.pittsfordhockey.org.
