a presidential candidate, and then Secretary of State under presidents

University of Rochester Lecture and Course Descriptions:
Stalinist Russia
Mondays, July 11th – August 8th at 2:00pm
During Stalin’s rule Russia lost millions of people who perished as a result of Stalin’s
political and economic policies. When Stalin died, however, people’s grief was profound
and sincere. How can one explain such paradoxes of Stalin’s regime? This course will
attempt to answer this question as it explores "Stalinist Russia" from the perspectives of
economics, society, the arts, politics and war.
Tatyana Bakhmetyeva, PhD earned her graduate degree at Moscow State University in
Moscow, Russia. She received her Ph.D. in 2006 at the University of Rochester with a
concentration in Modern European History/Russian and Soviet History; History of Catholic
and Orthodox Churches; Women/Gender History. Tatyana is currently a Lecturer at The
University of Rochester, Department of History and at the Susan B. Anthony Institute for
Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies.
The Human Brain in Health and Disease-New Insights from the Laboratory and the Clinic
Mondays, August 22nd – September 12th at 2:00pm
Learn about new research and the latest techniques used by scientists and clinicians with
guest speakers Dr. Brad Mahon and Dr. Bogachan Sahin. Brad Mahon is a graduate from
Harvard University, receiving his Masters in Cognitive Neuroscience in 2002 and
Doctorate in 2009. He is presently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Brain &
Cognitive Sciences, Neurosurgery Department, Center for Visual Science and Center for
Language Science at The University of Rochester. Brad teaches undergraduate and graduate
students on Cognitive Neuroscience, Plasticity, and Cognition. Bogachan Sahin majored in
molecular biology as an undergraduate at Princeton University. He completed his M.D. and
Ph.D. training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. After
completing his neurology residency and stroke fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, he
joined the faculty of the Department of Neurology at the University of Rochester School of
Medicine and Dentistry in 2013. He is currently serving as the Associate Director of the
Vascular Neurology Fellowship Program.
