The numbers are based on the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office (PPSO) FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR). Since Sheriff Greco took office in 2012, overall crime has been reduced in the Parish by 15.65%. For 2015, violent crime or persons crimes (homicide, rape, robbery and assault) saw an increase of 3.8%. Total non-violent or property crimes (burglary, theft and auto theft) were down by 5.9%. Of the seven reportable offense categories, four saw increases: rape, assault, burglary, and auto theft. Plaquemines Parish did not record any homicides in 2015, compared to one in 2014. The number of rapes in the Parish increased by six; however, all nine crimes were solved with arrests being made. In each of the incidents, the crimes involved juveniles being victimized by someone they knew or were related. Robberies remained unchanged with a total of two incidents. Arrests were made in both of the 2015 crimes. The Parish saw a 1.7% increase in reported assaults during 2015. Four more assaults were reported from the previous year. Of the 236 total assaults, only 27 fell into the category of aggravated, or committed with a weapon. All, but one of those cases, or 96%, have been solved. 142 of the 209 simple assaults, or 68%, have been closed. For 2015, there were five more burglaries committed compared to 2014, resulting in a 5.4% increase. A review of the crimes determined that nearly one-third were committed because the home or business was apparently left unlocked. Sheriff Greco said, “As Plaquemines Parish continues to grow and develop, we urge all citizens to help by keeping a watchful eye out for your neighbor and personal surroundings. As a reminder, never leave your property unattended and when possible lock up belongings. The best way to prevent a burglary is to not become complacent.” Theft was down 34 incidents compared to the previous year, resulting in an 11.6% reduction. The total number of auto thefts for 2015 compared to 2014 was up by five incidents, or a 26.3% increase. Per the FBI, the auto theft category includes offenses in which an individual borrows a vehicle, but fails to return it. In Louisiana, that crime is considered unauthorized use of a movable. In 2015, almost half of all Plaquemines Parish auto thefts, or 10 incidents, were considered unauthorized use of a movable. The PPSO’s 2015 overall clearance rate, which is the rate that shows how often a crime is solved, was 37.8% compared to 36% last year. Our deputies solved 72.8% of all violent crimes and 15% of all non-violent crimes. The 2014 national averages for those two groupings are 47.4% and 20.2%, respectively. Weeds in the home lawn can be a nuisance to those who put in the time and effort needed to keep a nice, clean green space around their home. Even though we mow at the proper intervals, irrigate when needed, and fertilize at recommended rates, sometimes annual weeds pop up and cast a shadow on all of our hard work. Crabgrass is one of the most commonly

talked about weeds in the whole country. How can one weed be a common problem throughout all of the climatic regions throughout the United States? One reason to explain the commonality of crabgrass issues across the US is the fact that it is botanically classified as a grass plant and all of our lawn grasses are also considered grass plants. Selective herbicides have the ability to eliminate grasses or broadleaf plants. There are many options available today. Fertilome Weed Free Zone, Ortho Weed B Gon Max for Southern Lawns, and Spectracide Weed Stop for Lawns are wonderful examples of herbicides that control broadleaf weeds without harming the lawn grass. One question left to be answered is how do you eliminate a grassy weed from a grass lawn?

The first line of defense should be to amend the soil according to what species of grass you are growing as a lawn. This will benefit your lawn by giving it the growing advantage and can be done through soil sampling and analysis. Provide the proper care and maintenance for your species of turf through supplemental irrigation, fertilizer applications, and proper mowing practices. Herbicides can add yet another layer of protection. Grassy annual weeds like crabgrass, goosegrass, barnyardgrass, and yellow foxtailgrass can easily be prevented using “pre-emergent” herbicides. This type of herbicide works by eliminating newly germinated seedlings before they grow into mature plants. There are several products available to the home owner including Scott’s Halts Crabgrass Preventer, Hi-Yield Ornamental and Grass Stopper II with Dimension, Sta-Green Crab-Ex, Greenlight Amaze, and Preen Weed Preventer. All are offered in granular form, should be evenly applied to the lawn, and watered in to activate as per label instructions. An application in mid-February will help reduce crabgrass later in the season.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect reminder to prune garden roses.

Bouquets of roses are often given as gifts on Valentine’s Day and what better way of reminding a gardener when to prune their own roses. Garden roses should be pruned late winter to encourage optimum growth and flower production. Over time, an unpruned rose will eventually become woody and will not flower like it once did. Make sure to use the proper tools when pruning roses. By-pass style hand pruners are very common along with loppers for larger cuts. Some roses have more thorns than others so hand and arm protection is a must. To start with the pruning process it may be helpful to know what type of rose you have. Shrub roses are more compact and can easily be pruned using hedge shears. Some examples of common shrub roses would include Drift and Knockout Roses. Climbing roses grow long stems to cover trellises and fence lines. Grandiflora, floribunda and hybrid tea roses all have the traditional growth when one thinks of rose bushes: old, thorny canes entangled in a mess.

Pruning should be thought of as a revitalization procedure aimed to remove old growth and allow for new growth to take over and flourish. Start with the hand pruners and remove up to 2/3 of the above ground growth from each cane. Try to make angled cuts directly above an outward facing bud without cutting into that bud. Examine these canes for health, good color, and spacing. The idea is to keep about 4-5 main canes coming out of the crown with fairly even spacing. This will promote good airflow later in the season when the plant begins to leaf out. Always remove broken and diseased stems during the pruning process. You can finish the process by watering in an application of a general all-purpose fertilizer. All that is needed now is time and patience. You will soon reap the rewards of proper timing and care as your rose bush puts on a show later this spring.

Pre-emergent herbicideshelp control grassy weeds.

Is There A Statesman in the House? The 2016 Presidential campaign has been the most childish and boorish of the 15 contests I’ve seen in my teenage and adult years. On one side,we have an elderly Socialist sparring with a beleaguered former Secretary of State and nearly estranged wife of a former President while on the other we have a super-rich New Yorker who defies the courtesies of civilized discourse while attacking at will whichever candidate enters into his sights. We also have the last of the Bushes, which is sort of like having the last of the Kennedys, a slightly rumpled, slightly exasperated governor of Ohio, a super laid-back neurosurgeon and the scions of two Cuban immigrants. This motley crew of eight

may be joined by a Democrat or two before it is over but it is not looking pretty for the United States. We have more than a quarter billion citizens and this is the best we can do? The moderators of these debates are hardly moderators; the deeper we get into the debates the weaker the controls become from those hosting the events and asking the questions. Never has a campaign produced so many insults and insulting lines of questioning and never has a series of comprehensive, productive and clear platform points been so hard to come by. The Waffle House should sponsor all the debates. Many questions are loaded from the hosting network’s perspective and equal involvement of all candidates went out the window several debates ago.

What can we do about this sad state of affairs? Well, for one thing, the hosts should enforce their rules like an NBA referee and disallow a rude or uncooperative candidate to speak. Or give them a technical and usher them off the stage. The other thing we could do is to post the questions behind the candidates on the stage and require answers to them, not some political rhetoric that avoids the question. One political posturing could be allowed before the candidate would be ruled ineligible to continue. Why should America listen to what amounts to a dumb reality show when the stakes are so high? So what if the candidates know the questions beforehand? Then they could possibly format an intelligent, concise response not being influenced by someone else on the stage. Rebuttals could come once all candidates fielded the same question and the rebuttals would have to be conducted with decorum and clarity.

For me, there are way too many Republican debates and watching a strident, platform-lacking, sartorially challenged candidate against a short term folk hero senior citizen with even less of a believable platform than any candidate from either party on the Democratic side is just too much. Richard Nixon might have sweated on camera but he wasn’t insulting; Jimmy Carter fielded shots from Ronald Reagan with restraint, George Bush and John Kerry’s meetings weren’t an embarrassment to either candidate. Even Barack Obama and Mitt Romney’s 2012 face off seems light years away in decorum and courtesy compared to 2016. Is it too much to ask the grownups to come back in and run this country?

Sheriff Greco continues to credit higher visibility of patrols and increased community involvement as contributing factors to the overall reduction in crime. The Sheriff said, “These latest crime statistics demonstrate that our enforcement and outreach efforts throughout our community are making a difference. We will continue to work hard in hopes of removing the criminal element, as well as develop vital relationships with our youth and citizens.”

Our criminal investigators have also remained persistent in making solid cases, resulting in convictions. “Criminals be warned – we will investigate any and every crime vigorously and hold those who commit them accountable,” Sheriff Greco said.“The men and women of the Sheriff’s Office continue to perform admirably in protecting our Parish. We are committed to keeping Plaquemines safe. Furthermore, the cooperation of our citizens has been outstanding and we cannot accomplish the mission without them. Keeping crime down is an active partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and the community. Please do not hesitate to call 911 to report a crime or any suspicious activity,” Sheriff Greco said.

Hi Everyone, Certainly hope your Mardi Gras and Valentine’s Day were the best ever. Mardi Gras my husband and I stayed all warm and toasty at home while our daughter and our two grandchildren (that live close to us) braved the cold. I just can’t seem to take those bone chilling winds anymore. They caught the parades at the very beginning and were home fairly early. I had meat and vegetable soup ready for them to eat when they came over to show me what they had caught. Valentine’s Day was such a beautiful day! I opened up the windows and thoughts of Spring were dancing in my head. So I decided to see what I had to paint. I didn’t have any wood cut. Ronnie has been busy building me a paint cabinet when he isn’t doing other things. So he is pretty much occupied with that when he is around the house. He has changed the design two or three times. But that is okay, I will have all my

paints in one place when he finally finishes it. But anyway, back to the subject at hand. I did have an 8X10 canvas and a Renee Mullins pattern I had been wanting to paint so I decided to paint the design on the canvas. This went a lot faster than I thought it would. I had actually thought of showing you this one next time. But, I got it done all in one day. This one was super easy and quick. And since I was all alone and had no interruptions, except for maybe 3 or 4, and a blow dryer handy to help with the drying time, it was a quick project. I had thought about adding some flowers on the bottom of the canvas behind the bunny but decided I didn’t have enough room. Thought about pulling a few strokes for grass and I guess I just got lazy because that didn’t happen. I decided this was just fine. I wanted a simple project. And here it is, my little Spring Bunny. Hope you like it. Well, that’s my project this time. So....what will your next craft be? Mine.....I don’t know. But I know it will be lots of fun. Think the next one Carlea’ and I will do together. Sincerely, Paula Johnson

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTSCapt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

Today I had breakfast at Venice marina. I talked to Gary of the Red Eye. He said nobody did much of anything offshore yesterday either. He came in with 3 blackfin and was proud of them. Will Bradford invited me to go with him on his go devil scouting and maybe finding a hog on the way.

Once again I grabbed my travel rod out of the truck and got back on the water. With the river high things are disturbed and dirty. We have to keep looking and move with the changes in order to do good for our customers It started out a bit better. We did not find anything to shoot at but once the fishing rods hit the water a few rats bent our poles. I managed the first keeper after a short while. We moved around and the bite got a little better. We made a stop, fishing from the bank and other close places for some catfish and managed 6 nice yellow cats.

I had a free day and invited 2 of Shannon’s daughters to spend the day with me on the water. They were right on it. I went to an area that was doing well a few days ago. Conditions were good and we soon found some fish. Lonasia was the first on the board.

There were a lot of small fish to be had. We caught trout, croaker, redfish, and catfish. Some small enough for bait. Yes we actually had the hook in the mouth of this monster.

Early in the day the Bowers sisters teamed up with a very nice double.

The following stories & pictures were from trips taken last summer.

With 6 yellow cats and 3 keeper reds in the boat we moved to an oyster bed that holds some fish at times. Today was the time it held the fish. We quickly found a limit if nice slot reds and headed in with our 3 man limit of 15 slots. There are 6 nice catfish hiding under that pile in the cooler. Our shadow boat had a 2 man limit of 10 and released some waiting for us to weed through a bunch of shorts. It was a good day on the water.

Offshore trip tomorrow. Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.

Lonasia had the biggest of the day on the hook but half way through the fight she was ready to pass the rod. Being her first time fishing she did very well. Her sister Layla did not want any part of this monster but wanted to net it. I finished off this 29 incher and had my net lady do her job.

The search for good size fish did not fare well for us but we still had some meat in the box with 4 reds, 2 flounder, and unfortunately only 1 keeper trout.

It was the first time for Lonasia and only the second time for Layla. You will be hearing more from this dynamic duo soon. I will make a point of that.

The next day I had Jon from Texas. He is on the Texas Fishing Form and has never been fishing salt water at all. He wanted to bring his own setup which I had no problem with. After looking at what I had he decided to leave his bass setup in his truck.

I had an issue with my boat because of something I left on. After I bought the new battery we were all set. On the way out I stopped at one of my go to places but conditions were not right yet. would check it after the tide changes. His first fish of the day was a decent sheepshead. Every fish he was to catch today would be a first for him.

Welcome To Dogs On Deployment

Your help can assist our serving military! Visit: http://dogsondeployment.org

Military members nation-wide confront a multitude of problems during their careers, the last thing they need to worry about is their pet’s care during their service commitments. Dogs On Deployment is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit which provides an online network for service members to search for volunteers who are willing to board their pets during their owner’s service commitments. Dogs on Deployment promotes responsible, life-long pet ownership by military pet owners by advocating for military pet owner rights, providing educational resources and granting financial assistance for military pet owners during times of emergency. Join Dogs on Deployment’s mission in changing the lives of our military members and their pets. Dogs on Deployment aids pets of all types that belong to active duty, reservists, guard, honorably discharged veterans and their families. Our Goals• DoD aims at having DoD Boarders located near all major military bases in the United States. A military member should be able to find a DoD Boarder located within 50 miles, no matter what base they are stationed at or deploying from.• DoD will become a first resource for military members to turn to when they need long term boarding for their pets. This includes, but is not limited to, being recommended by military assistance organizations, base family support centers and animal shelters impacted by relinquished pets.• DoD plans to increase the rights and education that pet owners have while serving active duty in the military. This includes bringing light to the problem of pet relinquishment by military members to higher levels of the chain of command, and petitioning for annual, military-wide pet responsibility training. We want pets to be considered part of the family by military regulations, not disposable objects.• DoD will help promote the military-pet community by providing a database of partnered pet related businesses which support their troops through discount and incentive programs. Users will be able to search for local businesses which will provide them with affordable options for pet care.• DoD wants to help qualified military members with the cost of pet care during emergencies, and/or before and during deployments in order to promote responsible pet-ownership, providing financial assistance to get military pets spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and help with cost of pet care.

This is known as our Pet Chit Program.

What can I do now to prepare for the unexpected formy pets or my older family members?

In the confusion that accompanies a person’s unexpected illness, accident, or death, pets may be overlooked. In some cases, pets are discovered in the person’s home days after the tragedy. To prevent this from happening to your pet, take these simple precautions: Find at least two responsible friends or relatives who agree to serve as temporary emergency caregivers in the event that something unexpected happens to you. Provide them with keys to your home; feeding and care instructions; the name of your veterinarian; and information about the permanent care provisions you have made for your pet. Make sure your neighbors, friends, and relatives know how many pets you have and the names and contact numbers of the individuals who have agreed to serve as emergency caregivers. Emergency caregivers should also know how to contact each other.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) closed the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area in St. Tammany Parish as the fl ood gauge reached 16.5 feet on Saturday (Feb. 13). The closure is an automatic benchmark as set by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission. The gate at the entrance to the WMA on Old Hwy. 11 will be closed and locked when the fl ood gauge reaches 16.5 feet. Included in the closure is the Pearl River-Honey Island Shooting Range, located in the Pearl River WMA.Increasing water levels in the Pearl River has caused backwater fl ooding in the WMA. Once the gauge goes below 16.5 feet, the WMA will reopen. The Pearl River WMA, which consists of 35,618 acres, is located approximately six miles east of Slidell and approximately one mile east of Pearl River. For information on this WMA, go to http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/wma/2789 or contact Forest Burks at [email protected] or 985-543-4781. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Closes Pearl River Wildlife Management Area Due to Flooding

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water, sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.

Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops & looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent.

His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, fl ying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend fi nally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together…

National School Choice Week is celebrated from January 24-30, 2016. It is an event to raise awareness of effective education options for every child within our educational system.

Belle Chasse Academy planned many events for the week which included: daily quotes on the morning announcements provided by our school leader, Mrs. Jane Dye, a school-wide student photo (this was a momentous event), banners were hung within the school facility, the cafeteria served over 700 yellow cupcakes for a special treat following lunch Wednesday, the PE Department taught the “2016 School Choice Dance” to all students. The IT department also composed a music video that is posted on the school website for viewing, commemorative yellow NSCW scarves were distributed to parents that attended the most recent Coffee with the Principal and the Belle Chasse Academy promotional video that was created by members of our Fine Arts and IT Departments were viewed. BCA had a great week!

Karina is a 6 year old tortoiseshell. This gorgeous girl came to PAWS as a stray. Karina is the type of cat that likes to hang out by herself for awhile, then when she needs love, she’ll fi nd you. This is typical of most adult cats. As you read the newspaper or watch TV, she’d probably come sit by you to get some love. She hangs out in our General Population room with the other adult cats. You can call her independent. It just takes her awhile to get used to people. Karina is up-to-date on shots, micro-chipped and spayed. Come by PAWS to meet Karina Tuesday-Saturday 11:00-5:00 pm. If you are looking for a snuggle bug, Lady is your

girl! She is such a love. Lady was surrendered by her human because they could no longer afford to take care of her. When she arrived here at PAWS, she tested positive for FeLV, which is Feline Leukemia. This is a disease that is passed on either from mama cat or through grooming. Therefore, it is contagious to other cats, not dogs. The life expectancy of a cat with FeLV is 1-3 years, shorter if that time is spent in a shelter. There is no cure nor any medicine to get rid of the disease. Lady is such an awesome cat!! She loves being around people. She has so much love to give. Lady would be a great addition to any family. Would you be willing to open your home to an awesome, lovable, friendly cat who will give you all the love in the world?

Meet Deuce. He is a 5 year old Terrier/pit mix. Deuce is great with kids and is still working on playing with other dogs. Deuce is very treat motivated. He loves to run and play in the yards here at PAWS. He has had minimal training in the past. Deuce is neutered, micro-chipped, and up to date on all shots. Come meet Deuce here today at PAWS on 455 F Edward Hebert Blvd, Belle Chasse, LA 70037 or call 504-392-1601 for more information regarding Deuce.

Nacho Papito is a 10 month-old Terrier/Jack Russel mix. He’s very energetic and playful, but calm when he’s picked up. We’re still learning more about him, but we do know that he’s a big sweetheart! He’s neutered, microchipped, and up to date on shots.

Meet Blue Rose. She is a 3 year old Terrier mix. Blue Rose is a very beautiful and sweet girl. She loves to run and play here at PAWS. She does great with male dogs. Blue Rose is very treat and toy motivated. She is very afraid of water. Blue Rose enjoys playing fetch. She is spayed, micro-chipped, and up to date on all shots.
