My name is Scratchabelly! I am a 4 year old girl looking for that special someone who will scratch my belly and spend time loving on me. And don’t worry, I have plenty of love to give too. I have been at PAWS since May 2012. I am so ready for my forever home. I would love to sit in your window and watch the world go by. Sitting on your lap for naptime would be awesome! If you have toys I can chase, I’m ready to play. I am up-to-date on shots, spayed and micro-chipped. P.A.W.S. • 455 F. Edward Hebert

PPSO Offers Free Rides HomeThis Holiday Season
In an effort to prevent impaired driving and related fatality and injury crashes, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office (PPSO) will once again offer free rides to parish residents who are departing from a location within the parish.Residents who have had too much to drink at parties or other events can call 911 or the Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center at 504-564-2525. A deputy will be dispatched to their location and they will be brought home safely—no questions asked. This free service will be offered from December 14th through January 4th and does not extend into any other parishes.
“It’s time for all drivers to get the message,” said Sheriff Lonnie Greco. “Drunk driving is a choice you make, and when you make that choice, people get hurt or die. That’s why we’re joining with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to share the message: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”In 2013, 10,076 people were killed in crashes involving a drunk driver across the United States. In December 2013 alone, there were 733 people killed in crashes involving at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. 23 of those deaths occurred on Christmas Day.Law enforcement agencies across the country will be participating in the National “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” Campaign from December 18th through January 3rd, 2016. Sheriff Greco urges drivers to never drive impaired and reminds all vehicle occupants to always buckle up.Plaquemines Parish deputies will be out in full force this holiday season looking for those who do not heed the advanced warning and drive drunk.Plaquemines Parish drivers are encouraged to please follow these tips to keep the holidays safe and happy:• Even one drink can impair your judgment and increase the risk of getting arrested for driving drunk—or worse, the risk of having a crash.• If you will be drinking, do not plan on driving. Plan ahead; designate a sober driver before the party begins.• If you have been drinking, do not drive. Call a taxi, phone a sober friend or family member, or the PPSO Dispatch Center.Remember, driving after drinking should never be an option.

On 16 December 2015, Mr. Robert M. White, the First Assistant District Attorney for the Plaquemines Parish District Attorney’s Office, prosecuted a “multiple offender” proceeding against Mr. Myron Turner, who had been most recently convicted of four counts of crack cocaine distribution in October 2015. The proceeding sought to prove that Mr. Turner, who has been convicted repeatedly of felony narcotics charges and violent crimes, was a “multiple offender” under Louisiana law, and thus subject to a higher sentencing range.
After a bench trial, the Honorable Michael D. Clement held that Mr. Turner should be categorized as a “third felony offender” under the relevant sentencing statute, and as a result was subject to an increased sentencing range of between twenty and sixty years of incarceration. His original sentencing range had been between two and thirty years of incarceration. Judge Clement then sentenced Mr. Turner to forty years’ incarceration, and ordered that this sentence run consecutive to the ten year sentence that Mr. Turner was already serving as the result of separate felony convictions from 2013. Ms. Monique Zito and Ms. Viktatjia Dekovic assisted Mr. White in the multiple offender proceeding.
Deputy Chief Curtis Bowers of the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office testified on behalf of the State, and was qualified as an expert in the field of fmgerprint analysis and comparison. His testimony (which compared the fingerprints that were contained in the earlier court files with the fingerprints obtained from Mr. Turner in open court) confirmed that the individual before the court at the trial was in fact the same person who had previously been convicted.

The LSU Tigers have had an up and down 2015 but you can’t say they’re not in a giving spirit. For openers, they gave up their “just down the road” future at quarterback when Felipe Franks decommitted to the Purple and Gold in favor of Florida. Yes, the handwriting was on the wall earlier in the month with Franks but Franks, being no dummy, was hedging his bet as the Tigers entered November with the gauntlet of four SEC powerhouses to face. Once the first chip fell (at Tuscaloosa) and the second one slid off the table (Arkansas at home, with the accompanying decline in quarterback play and lack of substitution or adjustment by Les Miles), the die was pretty much cast that Franks would change his mind. Then the school gave Miles the cold shoulder for a couple of weeks until it realized it couldn’t get the shinier (but shopworn) coaching gift of Jimbo Fisher from Tallahassee and the Florida State Seminoles. No new (allegedly new and improved ) Star Wars offensively for LSU so they settled for Mr. Potato Head once again for 2016….and beyond!
A recent report about offensive coordinator Cam Cameron not being able to answer a question from another sought-after dual threat quarterback prospect has reared its head recently. Supposedly the prospect asked Cameron to “name one quarterback that the school (LSU) has developed in the past several seasons” when Cameron promised the kid development at LSU leading to a shot at the NFL. Guess what? There was reportedly no answer from Cam. We realize that the number of NFL quarterbacks from LSU or Alabama is severely lagging behind other positions but Nick Saban at least converts his QBs into confident game managers and allows his offensive coordinator to do his job. The last quarterback to lead LSU with confidence past seven games in any one season was Matt Flynn and that’s been eight years ago.
Another jostle came this week when…ooopps!…LSU higher-ups admitted ‘I guess we really did alter former LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis’s contract “but just a little bit”. Hey, six and seven digit dollar figure brain trust: that’s like being a little bit pregnant. Now, Chief will probably get his lawsuit settled in his favor while LSU takes it in the shorts again. There’s a new pain reliever ad on t.v. where one man offers a coach six other pills for his two Aleve tablets. The coach says “No”. I wonder what LSU would say if someone offered them anything for their one Alleva. But we know the answer to that question, don’t we? Speaking of Chavis, his current employer, Texas A&M, is a welcome addition to LSU’s life for a couple of reasons. One, the Aggies can’t beat as a member of the SEC even a disheveled LSU team and two, those guys lost not one but both their true freshman and redshirt freshman quarterbacks to transfer.
Even LSU can’t duplicate that feat and so the Aggies could possibly have a worse quarterback situation than the Tigers in 2016, who must depend on an inconsistent Brandon Harris, a third-string transfer from a second-rate Big Ten football program school and a head case former starting quarterback from Marietta, Georgia, who will be a junior and probably in charge of the clipboard one more year, if indeed, he even returns for more grief and being ignored. Until LSU can convince a developable prep quarterback that the school can actually do it, there won’t be any serious signal caller enrolling in Baton Rouge for some time. The school’s public relations team is now reduced to equal parts cah-cah and candor trying to explain to the public how the never-changing and never cutting-edge Les Miles Show continues to baffle most fans and football experts while the school itself tries to even outdo the confusion from the head coaches’ office.
We’d like to dedicate a few Christmas carols to members of the LSU family after this year (actually the last few years, but whose counting?).“Silent Night” - to Cam Cameron for his answer to the prospective quarterback recruit who asked about developing him as a next level quarterback at LSU. And also to the LSU Board of Supervisors and Joe Alleva for their deafening lack of response before the LSU/Texas A&M game this year regarding the status of Les Miles. “Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful” to the thousands of LSU fans who will continue to back averageness bordering on mediocracy as long as the Tigers are above .500. “Joy to the World”. Well, you see where this is going. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” - a song that could reflect where LSU might spend its future postseasons without some major changes in philosophy and execution. “The First No ‘L’” (season without a loss). Under present management: Never!

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTSWe still had other fish joining the mix as well as the trout. I put 2 redfish at 28 and 29 inches in the box and tossed back 3 other redfish that were a lot bigger.People worry about hurting fish and killing them. I don’t know if this fish was born this way or lost most of it’s tail when it was very young and grew another as it got older. Could not resist taking a picture of this sheepshead.
By the time we left I had no idea how many trout we had in the box. I knew I was not over my limit but my fishbox was so FULL.
I had to stuff some into the corners just to make room for the last few trout we caught. I was hoping to find a redfish or 2 on the way in but the area I went to was dirty so I headed to the barn. If I had found any slot reds they would have had to go into my live well. Had absolutely no room in the fish box. What a way to finish the season. 2 totes required to empty the fishbox. 85 trout, 36 sheepshead, 2 redfish and 4 black drum.
I am stripping the boat down and having some major work done on
it. A whole new transom and several other things being done. Should be ready to run by Feb. I will still be fishing on my Glacier Bay targeting Wahoo and I will be running on other boats also.
Wishing everybody a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Above all Stay Safe!

Capt. Hoop -- Continued
Unfortunately this will be my last trip for my bay boat for the year. I squeezed out a good year and ended on a high note.
My last trip started out with 4 guys that just wanted to fish and have fun. We met at the dock and I chose to wait out the fog a bit and have some light in my favor. My radar is very good but with the amount of small boats running the river I wanted to give me a chance. As it was the thick fog was only on the west side of the Mississippi. The east bank was clear as could be.
I did encounter some patches of fog and it was not as dense as the Tiger pass and Jump area. Once we made the 20 mile run I had my first chance to see what I had as fishermen. This one guy Joe was definitely not familiar with a fishing rod at all. He held the spinning reel up and reeled with the right hand backwards. He had trouble casting past the shadow of the boat. Another was holding the spinning rod at the butt end instead of at the reel. The 4 of them on my boat slinging hooks around also kept me on the alert. Time for me to become an angling instructor before I become a doctor extracting hooks or worse yet have all my equipment broken.
Our first stop was in Sheepshead territory. We were on them thick. There were an occasional trout but the sheepshead kept hitting the deck. Doubles were on order at times. The competitiveness was there as well as a lot of “jaw jacking”. We had a few black drum in the mix also.
Unfortunately Joe hooked on to a big fish. This is where he got indoctrinated into the proper way to use a spinning rod. The many sheepshead
had him doing things right but this fish was not coming to the boat at all. He never experienced anything like this before. With him running all around the boat as the fish would drag him another guy hooks a good size fish. I netted Joe’s bull red first and then get the black drum. From there on Joe and Edward kept at each other. Joe had the redfish and biggest while Edward had the most. It never stopped even after they got to the dock.
With well over 20 sheepshead, a few trout and 2 or 3 black drum in the box the dirty water moved in, the bite went south, and I had to make a move.
Last trip I developed a gremlin in my charging system for the trolling motor batteries so I had to use the big motor that has a tendency to spook the trout. I have a 250 Yamaha with only 750 hours on it that is running quiet and smooth so once I was in position I drifted a few feet into the spot I wanted and we were on trout almost at once. As our live shrimp were getting low I set up a Vu Du shrimp on a spare line and cast it out. First cast nice trout right away. Second cast and I put #2 in the box. Once the bait ran out everybody was on Vu Du and the box filled up fast. Plastic out fished the live.

I had nothing all week until Saturday. Once again the phone rang. Thomas was coming down with his 26 Calcutta for 3 days and wanted me to fish with him the first day Tuesday. With the continuous high winds nobody had been offshore for about a week so this was a crap shoot to say the least. The plan was to look for tuna early then go for snapper and try anything else that we found. We already knew where the blue water was and were hoping to find a good rip line to troll. Everything was flat calm.
We did find a bunch of shrimp boats but none were pulling. Just getting out to the places to drag. We hit a salt dome first. The water was still a bit dirty but we gave it a shot. We never deep dropped deep but he would try it the next day with his buddies. A bit farther the clean water blended in without any sign of a line. Too calm and no current. We made it out to a drill rig and set up shop. Our first troll around it produced a nice
blackfin on a purple Russelure deep diver. A few more passes and we had a good mark on the bait with an occasional tuna or two in the mix. Nothing incredible but enough to make an effort.
Our chunking only produced one good hit that may have been a good yellowfin or a big black. It threw the hook and we will never know. We continued our exploration and headed to Elf. There were a lot of fish there and we had clean water but still not mush current. Problem was all the fish were very small. The day was burning away so we checked out 109 on the way in. We left as the rig had it’s resident sharks come in to say hello and see what we were going to put in the water. With the early sunset we now have to call it about 2:30 just to beat dark. We hit the 7 mile rigs for red snapper and the first drop produced a nice amberjack that was just legal under this years regulations. The feds are most likely going to up the size limit to 34 inches fork length next year. Just a heads up. This new size is about 99% there. I was deep dropping to the bottom using a 4 inch long lead weight. One time I came up there was a shark hanging on to only the weight all the way to the
top. We never found a snapper there and our day was successful knowing where not to go in the near future.
As I was getting into my truck at the marina Mike Jeffcoat calls and asked if I was open Thursday. I said yes and he said book it. We left the dock in a bright sun and patches of thick fog.
Once at our targeted rig we set up a troll with 2 different Russelures while we tried to find something on our depth finder worth targeting. Almost at once we get a hit on the purple one and we have our first yellowfin on board that just made the legal 27 inch minimum size. Lines back in and another pass produces a good blackfin. This also came on the purple Russelure deep diver. As quick as it started it stopped.
We found some good marks in front of the support vessels at the rig but that also produced nothing. We hit a few other rigs with nothing good happening. The rest of the morning was a complete
bust. Everybody on board was getting bored. I was starting to think another bad day on the water. Later in the day we found some monster bonito. At least after a dull morning we finally had some action. I knew we had good fish below them but getting the bait past the thick school of hungry speedsters was very difficult. About every 10th fish would produce a good fish. I was too busy to get any pictures. Our next to the last fish turned out to be the best of the day and the angler brought this 72 pounder in all by herself
At this point one person on board had gotten nothing for the box. Some had put 2 in the box but he kept getting only bonito. This was our last drift and we had to head in when he hooks up to a good fish. I knew it was not a bonito. Now we had to get it in the boat. Our last fish in insured everybody put at least one in the fish box. It turned out to be a nice big blackfin. Last minute luck made this another successful day on the water.

By Paula JohnsonHi Everyone! email me! [email protected]
Are you ready for this wonderful holiday? Are all your hand crafted gifts wrapped and under the tree for those special people in your life? Or did you make something for yourself and family that is hanging on the tree, sitting next to the fireplace, on welcoming your guests on the porch or front door? I just love Christmas!! I love making things to give to my family and friends. I love being able to share what I have learned over the years with my granddaughter and others who want to learn to craft. I have learned from many very talented people, some who are still here with us and others who are now in their Heavenly homes. I can remember the first time I held an embroidery needle in my hand as a child, being taught by my aunt. I pricked my finger many times before I learned to move it out the way. The first time I held a crochet needle and making a chain, being taught by my friend’s grandmother and again later in life by husband’s grandmother. I learned the basics of decorative painting from a very talented artist who lives right here in Belle Chasse. My list goes on and on. But most of all I have to thank God for giving me the ability to learn and placing those talented people in my life. With that being said, let me tell you a little about what I did this time.
You all know I love painting for Carlea’s class, so back in September we chose what she wanted to gift to her classmates. Since this particular artist is a Canadian and all her wood is cut there, I thought we had ordered the wood way early enough. WRONG!!!! The piece we chose was a new item and was very popular. By Thanksgiving I still had not received the wood blanks and my husband couldn’t cut the ornament because of the
corners and cutouts on the inside of them. So it was crunch time! We went through ornament blanks I had here on hand and as much as we hated to, it was decided that she would choose which classmate would get each ornament. I am pleased to say, that I was told, each student loved their ornament. Carlea’ knows her classmates. Well, I guess she should, they have been classmates since kindergarten. Oh, and I did receive an email stating that I should receive the wood blanks by the New Year. Looks like I will be starting next year’s gifts way ahead of time and everyone will have the same.
As this year draws to close, I would like to thank you all for taking the time to read my column and giving me feed back. Your wonderful comments and encouragement have kept me going when I had no idea what I was going to write about. Thank you all so very much. Each and everyone of you mean the world to me. I would like to wish you and your family a Very Blessed and Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!
So what will your next craft project be? Mine…I don’t know. But I know it will be fun!
Boughs of Holly
Wondering what to give a gardener for Christmas? Or how about this…ever wonder how to garden with Christmas in mind? Holly bushes, with their red berries and dark green foliage, have been traditional wintertime decorations for as long as my grandmother has been around. These beautiful plants look good all year around with their glossy green foliage and dark red berries in the winter time. Not only do these plants provide us with seasonal color but they also provide shelter and a food source to many wildlife. Because red berries are the reason for the season, you must select female plants and the best way to do this is to purchase plants with berries
already present. The next characteristic to think about is mature size. ‘Needlepoint’ and ‘Burford’ hollies both get to be roughly the same size at about 10-12 feet tall and 8-10 feet wide. The ‘Needlepoint’ holly is noted as being a heavy berry producer. Those looking for a nice tree-sized holly should look at single trunk versions of ‘Savanah’ and ‘East Palatka”. Both will reach a similar mature size of about 25 feet
tall and 15 feet wide with a natural pyramid like growth habit. See what your local garden center or feed store has to offer.
So I got a poinsettia…Many gifts are exchanged during the holidays and one of the most common plants given to friends and family is that of the poinsettia. For those looking for a history of how the poinsettia plant became so popular in the U.S. can look up information on Joel Roberts Poinsett, but for those looking to keep their recently gifted poinsettia plant alive please read on. The best location for your new prize is a bright room. Be wary of interior hallways and other areas void of exterior windows. It will also be important to know where air conditioner, heater vents and drafty door ways are located because poinsettia
plants can be particularly sensitive to sudden temperature changes. The proper temperature range is anywhere between 65-75°F, which is easily obtainable in any South Louisiana household. Most find watering to the most difficult part because it involves more than just adding water on a set routine. To be effective you must water the soil as soon as it becomes dry to touch. This will involve checking to see if the soil is dry several times a month. You will hear of many tricks to help avoid having to keep such a close eye on your poinsettia plant but no trick will substitute for proper care. Good luck with your new gift!
Waiting for spring vegetables? Think about starting seedlings.Though I find many gardeners who love eating everything that grows in their garden, no matter what time of year, some grow tired of eating broccoli, cauliflower and greens. Maybe it’s the grey skies or maybe it’s the lack of bright colored produce, who knows. If you find yourself as one of those were prefer tomatoes and eggplants over collard and mustard greens then look to start growing your own vegetable transplants for the oncoming spring season. You will need a few supplies in order to grow your own transplants.
First off, you will need an area that receives at least 4-5 hours of sunlight. Choose an area near a water source. Whether it is near a faucet or at least a hose’s length away from one, easy access to water will make your life much easier. Other items needed include: peat based seed starting mix, pots, seeds and labels. Fill containers with seeding mix, thoroughly wet them down and let them drain off excess water. Fill out a label for the specific vegetable seed you are going to plant and go ahead and place them in each container. Next, drop two seeds in each container and cover seeds with a layer of seeding mix. The general rule of thumb on seeding depth is to sow seeds at two times the width of the seed; smaller seeds will require a small layer of soil over the top whereas larger seeds require a thicker layer of soil. When all seeds have been sown, water everything thoroughly and place in your previously designated growing location. Check the back of each seed packet for the “days to germination” section. This information will give you a general idea on how long it will take the particular flower seeds to germinate. I recommend recording this information into a garden journal to stay organized. It will take 4-5 weeks to grow proper transplants of lettuce and up to 6-8 weeks for proper tomato and eggplant transplants. Discuss with your local county agent for additional information.
