How a Sugar Addict went Paleo - and so can you

Carolyn Heneghan

Freelance WriterSlidell

Thanksgiving 2013. At the edge of my fork sat the last of Mom’s beloved pumpkin cheesecake. I stared at it with a deep, wistful yearning—my cheesecake was off to war, and I might never see it again. But it was actually me that was going to battle. With my own sugar addiction.

“You know that’s your last bite of anything sweet for the next 30 days, right?” (Lip quivers) “Yes.”“And you know you can’t keep a candy stash in your desk anymore?” (Hands tremble, eyes dart nervously) “Yeah...”“Are you sure you’re going to be able to kick sugar for good?” (Collapses)

That may not be exactly how my boyfriend remembers the day. It was our last dessert together before we officially started the Whole30 that kicked off our new Paleo diet, a diet devoid of my ultimate weaknesses—refined sugars and carbohydrates. But in my sugary holiday haze, I’d believe it.

Hi, I’m Carolyn, and I’m a sugar addict. But when my boyfriend and I decided after weeks of research to elevate our commitment to healthy living and go full-blown Paleo, it was something I knew I had to do. We all laugh about our sugar addictions, our sugar cravings. But to your brain, sugar is a drug like any other, firing off your brain’s reward and pleasure centers like crazy, so even when you down a carton of ice cream, you still want more. I wanted to take back control, and adopting the Paleo lifestyle was one way to do that. I was in.

It was difficult, don’t get me wrong. Once a fruit lover, I became a fruit monster, gobbling up sweet berries and satsumas to satisfy my cravings from the get-go. After the Whole30, I got friendly with refined sugar substitutes, like honey, coconut sugar, and coconut nectar, which let me indulge while still keeping to my new diet.

But once you’ve looked a Twix bar in the face enough times while saying, “No, you chocolate-covered caramel cookie goodness, I do not want your refined sugar and glucose syrup in me!” (Yes, out loud. Yes, in public.), your mind and body start to change. The cravings you thought would follow you to the fridge forever fade into the background. When you hit the self-checkout line at the grocery store, you don’t even see the candy stands anymore. You’re free. For now.

I certainly have my days where temptations overwhelm me. Mom’s Thanksgiving pumpkin cheesecake. My sisters’ dueling banana breads. A late-night chocolate bar when I’m backed up against deadlines. And, general rule of thumb: When a precocious 11-year-old baker makes you crème puffs from scratch—you eat one. And when they (honestly) turn out to be the best crème puffs you’ve ever had, you eat four.

Nobody’s perfect, and I’ll be the first to admit it. But being Paleo more often than not has taught me a lot about the mental and physical efforts behind staying in control of your cravings. And for those times that you do reach for a juicy organic apple or honey-drizzled almonds instead of cheap and easy refined sugar, being in control makes it that much sweeter.

Curry’s Personality is Changing the NBAIIf you look at the National Basketball Association as a casual fan, you wouldn’t get as involved as you would in the NFL or Major League Baseball. The NBA has been a place where the petulant and the predatory athlete seem to exceed those performers who offer star power and prestige, such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal and Tim Duncan. There are too many spoiled children, super jocks with little history of time in a disciplined environment, many of them coming into the league with one year or even no years of college experience. No wonder those fans focus on the misadventures of Kobe Bryant and others while admiring the small cadre of players such as Duncan, John

Stockton and Kevin Durant, just to mention a few.

A few years ago, a spindly, injury-prone youngster signed with the hapless Golden State Warriors out of tiny Davidson College in North Carolina. This less than imposing physical specimen was Steph Curry, a 6 foot, 2 inch bundle of moves and maturity that has transformed the NBA into a must-see ticket at least once a week. Curry is one of two guards on the Warriors, known as the Dubs (short and cool for “W”, the Warriors) who lead a sizzling attack every game which has placed their team on the cusp of basketball immortality. Curry and Klay Thompson are known as The Splash Brothers because they splash the NBA nets with a regularity only matched by Oklahoma City Thunder teammates Durant and Michael Westbrook, the second best guard in the NBA behind Curry. They do so, leading their team to a 53 and 5 record with 24 regular season NBA games to go. No team has ever had such a record at this stage of the season and it projects to a 75 and 7 final regular season record. The best performance came from the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls in the mid-90’s which won 72 games and lost just ten.

The best game of the year in the NBA was played Saturday night in Oklahoma City as the Warriors beat the Thunder, 121 to 118 in overtime. Curry led the team with 46 points, 36 on 12 3-point goals, which only two other players have ever shot in NBA history. Curry is the greatest 3-point shooter in the history of the league, shattering all season records for the past two years and breaking his own record on Saturday with 24 games in which to shoot, ostensibly, another 110 to 130 3-pointers, bringing his total to over 400. Compare that performance to all but three TEAMS in the NBA - 26 teams don’t have 288 3-point goals this year, which is what Curry has.

Now Curry left Saturday’s game for about six minutes to tend to a twisted ankle and still scored 46 points. He has missed the entire 4th quarter of more than 20% of his team’s games, which has reduced his league-leading scoring average at least one and a half points per game. He is the second-best free throw shooter in the league, he is in the top 15 in assists, top ten for steals and rebounds very well for a guard. His passing ability might be his best talent of all. But in a league where three-point shots are usually taken within a foot of the 22-foot arc, Curry hits his 3’s from anywhere from 22 feet to 37 feet on a regular basis. He has hit several 3’s from mid-court of farther, which is well over 40 feet. And he looks and acts like your little brother, a leprechaun in blue and gold, with a few juke moves and shimmies but nothing really over the top and nothing in “your face” like so many professional athletes are wont to do.

Curry is the reigning MVP of the league and is a shoo-in to be the virtual unanimous repeat pick. No one can possibly challenge him, even in a league featuring at least a dozen Hall of Fame shooting and point guards. For these mere mortals are not the complete package of Curry, the spiciest player in sports. Westbrook is more explosive and physical, but he’s more business-like. Chris Paul has to be too serious in carrying the LA Clippers’ scoring load and gets annoyed too quickly. Kobe Bryant is walking out the door, James Hardin has no on-court charisma and the rest are just great athletes, plagued by uneven performances, injuries and attitude. Curry has it all. You can’t hate a kid who spent his formative years having fun, following his NBA father around the country and learning the game. Fellow Splasher Thompson’s father also was an NBA player but Klay was too young to be around the NBA courts when his dad played.

It’s so refreshing to hear a guy like Curry approach the game as a genuine person, not full of himself or trying to promote on-court showdowns between him and other players. Curry is just amazing at what he does. We are watching the Babe Ruth of long-distance basketball shooting, the casual seriousness of a driven player who has revolutionized the game and the league. He’s the studiousness of Peyton Manning, the playfulness of Cam Newton (without the Superman b.s) and the clutch of Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. His work ethic is close to Rice’s, who, along with Walter Payton, had the toughest training regimen in recent sports history. He makes it look easy and effortless. And he makes it fun. He’s the “ooooh and ahhhh” of Ruth, Jordan and Rice. He is Steph Curry and there is simply no one close to him. Even Pete Maravich couldn’t get off shots like Curry, although Pistol Pete was probably the equal of Curry in 3-point goal percentages and a better passer. But Maravich never played in the 3-point era, which is a shame because Curry would have to break all of Pete’s records. Watching Stephen Curry is by far the best entertainment value in professional sports. There simply hasn’t been anyone so dominant like him in what he is paid to do.

By Paula JohnsonHi Everyone! email me! [email protected]

Hi Everyone, Remember the paint cabinet I mentioned that my husband was building for me? Well it is almost fi nished! I am so excited!!! All he has to do now is seal the wood. The wood is so beautiful I really don’t want to cover it up with paint. He built the cabinet out of Pecky Cypress. Yea, I’m not really sure I know what that is either, other than the wood is beautiful! At fi rst he was just going to make it with one door but changed his mind in the middle of the stream. Actually he had the door all made. And when I came home, he asked me how I liked the doors now. Well, needless to say the door was cut in half. I must admit, I do like the two smaller doors better than the one big door.

Let me tell you the story about how this cabinet came to be. They are doing some remodeling at the apartment complex where our daughter works (she’s a leasing agent) and they were going to throw this beautiful wood away. She quickly told them her Daddy would take some of the wood. They told her no problem, give him a call. And he was all too eager to bring some of those boards home. (These boards were actually the walls of the lounge at that complex. If only walls could talk I bet we would be hearing some really good stories!) He had no idea what to build at fi rst. I am so thankful he decided to build me a paint cabinet. He actually got the handles and the hinges from a friend of his down the road. They also are very old. The top drawer will hold my 8 oz. bottles of paints, varnishes, and sealers. The other drawers will hold the 2 oz. bottles. And at the very bottom I will put my favorite books and pattern packets along with extra brushes and supplies. I can hardly wait to get it totally fi nished so I can store my painting supplies in it. Seems as though Carlea’ and I are not the only crafty ones in this family. Before Katrina Ronnie used to build swings. rockers, bathroom

vanities, just a whole array of things. He built Kelly a bunk bed that had a desk, small closet, and drawers under it when she was very young. We had seen one at a furniture store and she wanted it. So he built. That was many years ago. I am so glad Ronnie has not lost his love of building things. Just took a long time for it to surface again. And yes, he is still very picky about his work. I so love that in him. Oh, by the way, Carlea’ has already claimed the cabinet when I am no longer able to enjoy it.

Well, that’s our craft project for this time. So what will your next craft project be. Mine..............I don’t know. But I know it will be lots of fun. Love my crafty family, no matter what their special gift is!Sincerely, Paula Johnson.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTSCapt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

The following stories & pictures were from trips taken last summer.

I went with Chip on his Worldcat Saturday. He keeps his boat here and fishes out of Venice but mostly out of the West. With the Yellowfin bite good at this time we could have gone with the fleet. I was told there were 42 boats on the grounds yesterday. Glad I avoided that boat show. Most of the boats that went there caught Yellowfin tuna. This was to be a teaching trip and putting some meat in the box. I like doing a trip like this instead of trying to fill the boat with tuna and if you do the customer realizes they did not bring enough coolers.

We met at Venice Marina about 6:00. On the way out I set some way points and explained the hazards like sand bars and obstructions so that he could navigate out on his own safely. We started out trolling for Wahoo. They were not around. The Blackfin although not thick were enough to keep us happy for a good while.

We had a nice sunset to round out a very nice day with a good group of guys. Waiting for the next time Chip.

We attempted to jig up some Blackfin but all we found were undersized Amberjack. I moved to several rigs and also over some structure and only at one out of the way the Blackfin were thick enough to spend some time there.

I attempted to locate an underwater structure but with his Raymarine system I was not able to locate it. He wanted to put some red snapper in his boat before we went in so I headed into state waters. We went to a rig about 6 miles out and it was not long before we were putting some very good red snapper in the boat.

On the way in LDWF agents stopped us. They asked for our licenses and our recreational landing permit. They checked out Chip’s registration. They took a look at our fish (ONLY) because one of the guys mentioned our big croaker. He never looked through our box just a look at the croaker the guy held up. They are out there so keep your permits up to date and your catch legal. Anybody who gets caught with undersize fish or too many deserves to be caught.

We got in just before the tuna fleet came in. We were able to hang the fish and get them cleaned before things got crowded at the dock. Note the large croaker in the middle of the picture.

One of the guys had a double rig set up and he was ready to go home after one drop.

We attempted to jig up some Blackfin but all we found were undersized Amberjack. I moved to several rigs and also over some structure and only at one out of the way the Blackfin were thick enough to spend some time there.

Just before noon, with 7 nice Blackfin tuna in the box, we changed methods and moved where we could drop down for maybe a grouper or two. We lost a lot of equipment in the rig fighting heavy fish. The guys have not mastered the steady upward pull that keeps the fish away from the rig. The pull up, reel down, method allows the fish to move a few feet closer to the structure and eventually before you can get it the 200 feet up the fish has made it 30 feet to the side and into something to foul up and get loose. Tying up to the rig makes this type of fishing hard but with 5 people fishing you can not hold the boat out from the rig. Too many lines will get tangled and into the props for sure.

Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.CAPT HOOP -- Our Freedom Charters 504-247-8459

We were scheduled to fish for 2 days. Our first day was foggy as usual. The ride down the river was not welcomed. It seemed there was an unusual amount of boat traffic as well as dredge pipes being moved. A bay boat found our wake and followed us all the way to South Pass. Even in South East Pass we could not see both banks. As we headed out the water was a bit better looking. I was already feeling good about the day. I had a good catch 2 days ago and yesterday the bite was very slow. Figured the fish would be hungry again. We went straight to the tuna grounds while others went looking for wahoo and blackfin.

There was no problem getting a king on the troll while attempting to mark the fish. We set up and got into the action almost at once. Our problem was getting our bait past the kings and sharks. We may have lost a tuna or two right off until the guys got the hook set down. Don’t wait to feel the fish. Any hint of a bite let the line go, slide the lever drag up and reel like hell. The sharks were a real pain today.

About noon Dad hooks a monster but part way through the battle he taps out to his son. This big kid did everything right. Once in sight I see a very big, fat, 180 to 210 pound yellowfin. The sickles went all the way to the tail and this stud had monstrous shoulders. I had one gaff and another guy had the second. I think he got excited seeing something like that which

We never put a yellowfin in the box We ended up with 4 good size blackfin tuna 1 amberjack and 1 king I did not cut up for bait. Can’t win them all.

That evening they look at the weather and decide there will be a window to fish in the morning. I got up this morning and got a text. “Stay in bed talk to you later” I replied “Was just about to tell you No fish is worth it.” The deadly front that hit us today could have caught us out there. Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.

We did hook up a good yellowfin but after about a 20 minute fight it came unbuttoned. Once in I found the problem. The customer had his own gear. He made a wind on loop and attached the fluorocarbon leader to it with his “Special” knot. The loop remained perfect. The knot slipped. The bonito were also active and occasionally we would get a blackfin. The kings kept us in the hook tying business. Fighting the big sharks and yellowfin that never made it to the boat was taking the strength out of the guys. I know we had a yellow throw the hook and another break the line or a toothy critter swam by and cut it. All these fish fight differently and after a while you can tell just what type of fish you have on the other end almost at once.

is understandable. Instead of letting the fish circle till one of us had a good head shot he reached way out as the fish was diving under the boat. The fish was too deep to hit but he managed to hit the top of the back. The fish shot away and took the gaff out of his hands. The gaff must not have penetrated much because it popped right to the surface and one of the customers retrieved it. The second mistake he made was reaching across the line. Doing that can break the line and/or prevent the gaff from sinking in properly.

Bing Cherry Cake Recipe

Tara Collier, OwnerCamellia

Produce SlidellSweet S U M P T H I N ’ S

Directions - Bake cake as directed on box. Use either bundt pan or fluted pan. Let cool. Cut cake in half and remove top layer. Place bottom half of cake on a plate and pour the Amaretto over it. Beat whipping cream with sugar until it forms stiff peaks. Spread half of the mixture on top of the cake. Place pitted Bing cherries over the whipped cream to cover. Place the top half of the cake on top of the cherries. Cover the top with the remaining whipped cream.

Next step - decide whether you want to place the nicest cherries on top or put them in the middle, filling the hole from the bundt cake pan. Then add more whipped cream, mixing with the cherries or leaving the whipped cream and cherries separate. Whichever you do, the result will be a delicious Bing Cherry cake.

Ingredients - Angel food cake, one pint whipping cream (beat until stiff peaks form), 8 tablespoons Sugar (fold into whipping cream while beating), 3 cups of pitted Bing cherries (approximately 1 1/2 lbs) preferably Olson’s (you may find canned Bing cherries pitted), 3/4th cup Amaretto liqeur).

Chill the cake mixture, cut and serve on a plate, adding more cherries for decoration and for the cherry lover in most of us. Enjoy!

From left to right: LDWF staff Toby Gascon (Analytics Specialist), Secretary Charlie Melancon, Patrick Banks (Assistant Secretary of Fisheries) and Cole Garrett (Legislative Liason)

(February 27, 2016) – While addressing CCA leadership and members at today’s annual meeting, LDWF Secretary Charlie Melancon said, “We will dedicate all of the time and resources necessary to ensure that LDWF is one of the best, if not the best, state resource agency in the country”.

“The Department will continue with the efforts of the previous administration to protect state’s rights to manage their own fi sheries. If we can’t accomplish our goals of equal and open access under the current regional management system, then we would look toward alternatives”

Additionally, Secretary Melancon said, “I would like to commend Randy Pausina for the excellent job he did as Assistant Secretary of Fisheries and I look forward to him being part of the new team going forward”.

Start the New Year Right!Adopt, Don’t SHOP!

Meet Oscar Wilde. He is a 5 year old Terrier/ Hound mix. Oscar is a very sweet boy. He does well with other dogs here at PAWS. Oscar also does really well with kids. He is very treat and toy motivated. Oscar loves to give kisses. He can be very lap loving and playful but also likes to be mellow at times. Oscar is afraid to get in cars but once he is in and moving he is happy. He enjoys being outside and playing fetch. He also likes quiet time. Oscar Wilde is neutered, micro-chipped, and up to date on shots.

Jade is a 1 year-old Dachshund/Beagle Mix. She likes to play with other dogs and loves attention. She’s mellow but always up for playtime. She’s microchipped, spayed, and updated on shots.

This is Robin. He is a 1 year-old Doberman Pinscher mix. Robin was found as a stray by Animal Control. He was adopted briefl y and brought back because the owner couldn’t take care of him anymore. Robin is neutered, micro-chipped, and up to date on all shots.

Royce & Rebecca

Salem is a beautiful sleek black 4 year-old cat who has so much love to give. She came to PAWS as a stray, was adopted, then returned because a family member was allergic. She has been at PAWS ever since. Black cats are very hard to adopt out. Don’t know why. She is one of the friendliest, lovable cats here at PAWS. Salem has been at PAWS for over 3 years! She would be a great addition to any family home. She is lovable, friendly, and would enjoy sitting on your lap. Salem is up to date on shots, micro-chipped and spayed. Come by and visit Salem and get lots of love.

SO friendly! Lovable! Purring machine! Awesome! Handsome! All of these describe 8 month-old Royce. He came to PAWS as a stray along with his sister Rebecca. He had an eye injury that has left him partially blind in his right eye. He receives eye drops everyday and will have to get these everyday for the rest of his life. This does not bother him in the least. All he wants to do is get on your shoulders and rub all over you and purr in your ear. He is such a love!! He loves being loved on and would love to sit on your lap and just snuggle. Royce is up to date on shots, neutered, and micro-chipped.
