Wind and Hail insurance Claims Soon to be on Dept. of Insurance Website

As we enter August and the peak of hurricane season, many will be reflecting on the 2005 storm that changed everyone’s lives. The emotional and physical damage caused by Katrina is unforgettable; and so are the mental stresses property owners faced when insurance companies fought paying claims (saying it was water, not wind that caused the devastation). Since then, insuring a home on the coast has been marked with delays, sometimes rejections, but always with insurance companies and those living inland claiming that coastal residents should pay higher for wind and hail insurance. Where is the data to back up the increased-coastal-risk claims?

No where.

But thanks to the Insurance Clarity Act (HB 909), sponsored by Plaquemines’ own Chris Leopold, State Representative of District 105, the Louisiana Department of Insurance will now collect and post on its website, all the data on wind and hail losses and premiums, organized by zip code and parish, as well as the number of policies private insurance companies have in each area.

Alabama passed a similar bill several years ago, and Leopold said he worked with Alabama State Rep. Joe Faust, who sponsored that state’s Clarity Act.

“We were able to take their [Alabama’s] law and improve it,” said Leopold.

Alabama, as a fellow Gulf Coast state, had many of the same insurance issues between its coastal and inland residents. Their Clarity Act has revealed an important fact: “As a result of their law, [Alabama] deduced that it did not cost more to insure the coast than inland, because of tornadoes,” Leopold explained.

Although there was some opposition by insurance companies and their lobbyist early on while in committee, Leopold’s Insurance Clarity Act passed unanimously in the House and Senate, and Gov. Bobby Jindal signed it into law.

Governor Bobby Jindal (seated) poses for a commemorative photo before signing into law the Insurance Clarity Act, which was sponsored by Plaquemines Parish’s Chris Leopold, State Representative District 105, (pictured to the Governor’s left).

This saves a huge step for consumers who until now would have to file a public records request to see the same data, said Leopold. Once launched, the public can be more informed if they are interested in investing in an area.

This is just a first step in Leopold’s mind. He is interested in exploring the possibility of multi-peril policies, when popular property damage coverage is combined into one policy. But the bigger picture would be an alliance between all Gulf and Atlantic Coast states, channeling that into a consumer buying block to get more value for consumers.

Leopold is now working with the Department of Insurance to create the most “accurate, useable and accessible” web page, which is set to launch in June 2015. A sunset clause was attached to the Insurance Clarity Act, letting it expire in 2017. At that point, the act would need to be renewed or the public would no longer have access to the wind and hail insurance data.

Quality Tax Preparation

Prepare for next Season! Come see us!

My name is Irvin Juneau, and I want to announce my candidacy for the Plaquemines Parish Council position in District 4. I am a lifelong resident of Belle Chasse, graduate of Belle Chasse High School, served in the United States Army as well as a deputy with the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office. I received an Associate Degree from Delgado Community College and a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Criminology from Our Lady of Holy Cross College. In 1999, I retired from Alliance Refinery after having worked there for 20 years. This year, I am celebrating 44 years of marriage to the former Kay Madere of Buras. We have three sons, who are all BCHS and college graduates, two great daughter-in-laws, as well as, four amazing grandchildren. In 2008, I was honored to be asked by the Plaquemines Parish Council to serve as the Interim Council Member for District 4. During those eleven months, I had the opportunity to become more acquainted with OUR residents and the issues affecting OUR neighborhoods. I feel this experience and the knowledge gained give me great in-sight to the duties associated with the council position and allow me to “hit the ground running” as YOUR next District 4 council representative. The next four years will be some of the most important times in OUR parish’s history! This will require YOUR council member’s full and undivided attention with no room for on the job training. Being retired gives me the opportunity to totally devote myself to YOU, this office and the parish. “I don’t want to make history…I want to make a difference by listening to, working with and echoing the wishes of the District 4 residents!” I humbly ask YOU, the voters, to give me that privilege!

A partnership between Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries & Louisiana Sea

Grant College ProgramLouisiana Fisheries Forward (LFF) is a voluntary educational program for members of the commercial seafood community. A collaboration of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) and Louisiana Sea Grant College Program at LSU (Sea Grant), LFF was established with the goal of improving the economic success of Louisiana’s commercial fishing industry.

LFF provides a structured mechanism to develop and deliver, over a three-year period, relevant and timely information to the seafood industry. Content is presented via the Internet, using training videos and fact sheets, and directly to communities with hands-on workshops, training days and demonstration projects that showcase new technology and best practice methods.

“Louisiana Fisheries Forward is about establishing a method to communicate important information to our commercial seafood community,” said Robert Barham, secretary, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. “This communication will help our fishermen, dealers and processors stay abreast of global trends, new equipment, handling practices, technology and rapidly evolving regulations. This program will help our seasoned veterans as well as newcomers to the industry improve their already high-quality Louisiana seafood, and help them take their product to the next level.”

Robert Twilley, Ph.D., executive director of Louisiana Sea Grant College Program, concurs, “Louisiana is the second largest seafood-producing state in the U.S., yet the commerce and culture of our industry is at risk. We believe the time is here for a fisheries renaissance, as more and more consumers look for locally sourced and sustainably managed seafood. Louisiana is already well positioned to meet that demand. Working together, we can enhance product quality, promote innovative business practices, and reduce our environmental footprint to ensure the continued success of commercial fishing.”

Though officially unveiled today, Louisiana Fisheries Forward initiatives are already in motion. LFF enhances the current outreach programs of Sea Grant, including the two-day Fisheries Summit in Houma and Dock Days along the coast. Working with LDWF and seafood industry leaders, these training days present a wider range of diverse and challenging topics and reach a greater number of people.

Four, 30- to 45-minute training videos are in production, that address: • How to be a commercial fisherman • How to be a seafood dealer/processor • Seafood business finance and management

• How to be a crab fisherman

Another six videos are planned over the next two-and-a-half years. Fact sheets, available online, will complement the videos with more detailed, time-sensitive information. Three demonstration projects, over the course of three years, will study gear efficiency and product quality; research findings will be presented at training and industry events.

Leaders at LDWF and Sea Grant are confident that the Louisiana Fisheries Forward program will help those in the seafood business thrive in a constantly changing marketplace.

“Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and Louisiana Sea Grant have a successful, 45-year history of developing targeted educational programs for the seafood industry,” said Twilley. “This partnership marshals the strength of community-embedded marine extension agents with the subject matter expertise of university scientists and fisheries resource managers. Together, these experts pinpoint timely and challenging issues facing our industry and more importantly, offer options and solutions that overcome those issues.”

Barham believes that offering our seafood community the knowledge to compete in the marketplace is the key.

“To be successful, our harvesters, docks and processors need the proper knowledge to compete in the marketplace, we have an opportunity to help provide this to our industry. We have already begun a successful branding initiative of Louisiana Wild Certified Seafood; Louisiana Fisheries Forward is an extension of that effort—helping our seafood industry increase consumer confidence and receive a premium price for their catch.”

A U.S. Armed Forces veteran, Mitch Cota has announced his candidacy for the District 4 Council seat of Plaquemines Parish. A longtime resident after his family moved to Belle Chasse in 1968. He joined the United States Air Force Reserves in 1978, moved away after marring his first wife and moved back in the mid 90’s to accept an Active Duty position with the Louisiana Air National Guard at the Navy Air Station in Belle Chasse. Mitch is currently married to Desiree A. Cota. They have three daughters and seven grandchildren together.

Mitch served the remainder of his almost thirty year career at the base, retiring as a Master Sergeant in December 2007. Since his retirement he has held several leadership roles, presiding over various volunteer organizations, two within Plaquemines Parish, one over multi-parishes, and is now serving at the state level as the State Commander and Chairman of the Council of Administration for the largest combat veterans organization in Louisiana.

Mitch is a Life/Legacy Member of Post 6706, of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, having served as Post, District, and State Commanders and as a Post/Area Commanders for the American Legion.

A lifetime Republican, Mitch is committed to giving the council his full-time commitment since it will be his only job. He intends to be accessible to the people by being seen in and around the district and available to be contacted by his cell phone: 504-460-8860 or his email at [email protected]. He is also committed to being accountable for the decisions he makes on behalf of the residents and the parish, by creating a website to be informative to his constituents before and after a council meeting if information and time allows. This website would be operated and funded by Mitch and not the residents of District 4.

COUNCIL SEAT

Hope things are going well for you and you have been doing a lot of crafting. Things are still crazy for me but, they are settling into a routine once again and I am adjusting to the changes. I have even been able to find time to do some much needed crafting. I will be doing a some crafts starting in Sept. so I really need to get on the ball with things I plan on having at the show. As they get closer I will let you know when and where they will take place. I will have many different Christmas ornaments, Thanksgiving and Halloween pieces. I am really excited about the new patterns I have been able to get. I may even try making a few wreaths. We shall see.

But, for this time let me tell about the Kitty Birdhouse Welcome sign that I painted. This is a Renee” Mullins design. I just love her carefree homey style, and the colors she chooses. For this design we used a total of 25 different colors of paint. The first thing we did, as always, was to seal our piece of wood. Than we traced on our main pattern lines and did our base coating. We applied two coats, sanding the first coat before applying the second coat of paint. After that was completely dry we traced on the heart opening, flowers, opening to the bird houses and everything else. The shading and highlighting is the last thing that needs to be done.

I went down and visited my DTR ladies and we started this piece. After three and a half hours of painting,

eating and enjoying each others company, we were not done. But, we do plan on finishing this piece at our next get together. So be looking for our picture in one of my future columns. I am looking forward to it!

Oh, by the way, if you have a child in grades Kindergarten thru sixth, be on the look out for a new monthly magazine that will going home with them. There is going to be a craft column in each magazine that you and your child/children can make together.

Well, that’s it for now. So what is your next craft project going to be? Mine…I think I will be doing a lot of painting and having fun!

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS 8.07.14GENERALLY SPEAKING - Not much difference since late July but we are approaching the white shrimp season soon. Trout catches are way down from the past and hopefully the mid to late summer season will help kick in what has been a mighty slow speck season for many fishermen, experienced or not. Captain Bobby Dugas is getting ready to do some fishing in the Dominican Republic and so his reports may even be a little more erratic than usual, although they are still full of great fishing results and on-the-water fun. The Wounded War Heroes’ 5th Annual Fishing Outing will be under way at Cypress Cove Marina on August 22nd and 23rd. Tide movement is still later in the day, so with trout catches down and reds and offshore species hitting all day, there’s no reason to be on the water at sunrise. However, the heat and humidity are still there, so unless you hydrate well and dress with a hat, sunscreen, a cooling cloth or towel, sunglasses and have plenty of water, electrolyte and non-alcoholic beverages, you could be asking for trouble. Also take a lightweight long sleeve shirt or waterproof jacket as a strong summer shower can lead to hypothermia, especially if the wind is up.

MGM MARINA - Leona Squarsich. 504-656-2267. Fishing has been spotty at MGM but Leona says charter captain Zack Mouton took some clients out the other day and had 100 trout in the boat by 10 AM in Four Bayou Pass. Others have been finding luck on the northeast side of Bay Round. The active rain showers have been playing havoc with the summer routine in Myrtle Grove. Trout have been harder to come by as fishermen are reluctant to make a long run out to Manila Village and nearby locations with the nasty thunderheads that have dominated much of this summer. MGM is also a great place to launch if you are making a run to Grand Isle. It’s only about a 45 minute run to the Isle and you get to avoid speed traps and a two to two and a half hour boring ride through St. Charles and Lafourche parishes. And you can always fish the dock at MGM, where carefree fishing at an affordable price is always available, especially with a boatload of overheated kids. Dad will love it too. MGM MARINA 504-656-2267.

LLOYD LANDRY - 504-912-8291. FISHING THE MIDDLE WITH LLOYD. August in Plaquemines Parish is a nerve-wracking time of the year with everyone keeping their eyes on the Tropics. But it also brings us plenty of new and exciting opportunities for fishing. Trout have slowed up on the inside on the west side of the river, so turn your attention toward the Sandy Point rigs. You can catch reds, speckled trout, white trout, cobia, triple tail and many more species. You never know what’s bona bite once you drop your lure down on the side of the rig legs. Remember - you can’t keep any redfish past the Green Monster. If unsure, ask someone and pay attention to where you are so you don’t make a mistake, get in trouble and ruin your outing. The east side of the river is still red hot with redfish. Fish all points from Ostrica to Baptiste Collette with Gulp! or dead shrimp under a cork. Watch the thunderstorms because they sneak up on you fast this time of year. Be safe and tight lines. LLOYD LANDRY. OUTCAST FISHING CHARTERS 504-912-8291

BOBBY DUGAS - BC CHARTERS LTD. The Caribbean is calling Bobby and Bobby is answering the call this month. We will continue to contact Bobby for reports from the shores of the Dominican Republic for a little variety and spice in these reports. We ran into Bobby for the first time in a couple of years in Belle Chasse last week and there is a lot less of the new Bobby than the old Bobby. Dugas says the tides are falling later in the day, so between quiet water movement and early morning thundershowers, the sunrise trips are not that much fun for him and his clients. The specks are still not cooperating and they’re not that big as compared to past seasons. So to the south Bobby goes for the rest of the summer and into the fall. Must be nice! Clean water is a problem right now. Bobby says to continue to try Double Bayou and Riverside for red action in August. BOBBY DUGAS. BC CHARTERS LTD. 504-912-9724.

BESHEL’S BOAT LAUNCH - Robert says catching trout is still a hit and miss affair but fish are being caught around Black Bay, Iron Banks and the Black Tank. Balidore Reef below Black Tank is also a good spot. There are reports of redfish in Bay Gardene and a few redfish boats are out during the day. The water is clearing up but it’s still kinda murky and green. Tides are gradual - no more than a foot or under and the high tides are early AM - around 7:00. Meanwhile, the last of eight boat slips under construction at Beshel’s are just about ready to occupy. Robert says the launch has never had boat storage in the past and there is no local storage in their area. Seems like those units will be snatched up quickly, if there’s even any left at this time. If you fish Beshel’s, check with Robert for the best spots that week. If you go there, send us some pictures and a story or two about your success on the east bank. Beshel’s is still the place to catch your limits on the east bank and they have all your launch needs seven days a week. BESHEL’S. 504-333-4469.

VENICE SPORTSMAN’S LODGE AT THE MARINA - DAN SKERMETTA. Captain Dan went back to the place he caught 40 trout and said he had no luck at all, even with weather and water conditions the same. Those finicky specks have been maddening this year and only thoughts of a cooling late summer keep the optimism going for this species. However, if you can swing it, go for a yellowfin excursion and you won’t be disappointed. Tuna have been hitting regularly to spectacularly all year long back into 2013 and the weather and sea conditions are ideal, with calm water and little wind. It means it stays hot and humid but most fishermen will take the discomfort over a bad weather/bad fishing outing. The specks are acting like they’re in a mobile witness protection program this year….chase them, they move. Hit or miss. Mostly miss. Meanwhile, we are expecting a report from Dan or one of his associates regarding the Faux Pas Tournament held last month at Venice Marina. Dan said it was spectacular and fishing, music, fun and food was outstanding. There are reports of scattered bill fishing catches and a few reports of early tarpon sightings. Mangrove snapper are plentiful both inside and outside. CAPTAIN DAN SKERMETTA. 504-481-2320.

CAPTAIN JAY QUIROS - OUT OF VENICE ALONG THE PASSES. 504-228-5895.

JAY QUIROS. ON A MISSION FISHING CHARTERS. 504-228-5895. No report this week.

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

My offshore trip for today was pushed up to Sunday due to the storms forecasted for Monday. Good call because it has been thundering and raining for over 2 hours. I have been fishing six days straight and almost over slept. Getting up at 4 is not my problem. Getting to bed before 10:30 is where I mess up. When I got there the guys were waiting. We headed out and went right past the other boats looking for live bait. We gambled on finding some at the rig. About 12-15 miles from the river we found a water color change and there were threadfin on it. We quickly made bait and continued on.

When we got there we had 5 boats but the conditions were not what we had 2 days ago. We set out our baits and settled in for the action We soon got a hit and lost that one on the strike. Upon checking we also lost our other live bait. The fish are winning today. Our first fish turned out to be a small blackfin. Definitely a different day. We also got bit off by a shark or barracuda. The fish started coming up and busting all over. The only thing we got on a popper was a bonito. It hit a Russelure Tuna Bomb.

After losing about 4 fish I decide to get dirty. We had the blackfin and several bonito for red meat as well as a flat of pogies. Although the red meat usually produces the best it was not happening. I switched out one bait for a chunk of pogie and the drag starts singing.

By the time this one got in the boat the kids whole body was shaking. He wrestles and has the ability to find an inner strength so he sucked it up and stuck with it till the end. He had to get himself together before taking this picture.

The action was there but simple things like pulling the rod out of the holder and setting the hook, letting the line bunch up in one place and getting a backlash etc. were making things frustrating. Those are the things we have to deal with. Instead of blowing up at the customers we just try to get them into the program. There was also the barracuda and sharks that kept us in action by cutting us off. It was a very long time before we had another good fish on. This was noticeably bigger and beat one guy down. He had to switch due to cramping but took the setup back after a short break and finished the fish off.

We stretched it out as long as we could but had to take a fish and mental beating for our days efforts. We stopped in state waters and quickly put a limit of red snapper in the box to end our day.

A fitting end to a busy week of good fishing.

Life is Good.

Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more

important than that.

SLIME MOLDS ON TURFGRASSESUSUALLY NOT SERIOUS PROBLEM

Slime molds cause concern to many home gardeners when they occur suddenly in warm weather after heavy rains or watering.

Slime molds are primitive fungi that grow on low-lying vegetation, such as lawn grasses, bedded flowers, mulches, ground covers, bases of trees and some other areas. The fungi feed on decaying organic matter, bacteria and other fungi.

During or after humid, wet weather from late spring through fall, the slime mold comes to the soil surface and creeps over vegetation in round or irregular patches that vary from several inches to several feet in diameter.

The reproductive stage is the only one most gardeners ever see. The fruiting structures are usually a grayish-white, bluish-gray, black or white. They are filled with dark masses of powdery spores that easily can be rubbed off the leaf or stem.

Slime molds are nonparasitic and, technically, do not cause disease. They merely use plant leaves and stems to support their reproductive structures. However, slight damage may occur when leaves are smothered or shaded for several days to a week or longer by the molds.

No control is necessary. If practical, break up the unsightly spore masses by vigorously raking, brushing or hosing down with a stream of water. Mowing grass usually removes most of the spores.

For further information contact Alan Vaughn, County Agent, Plaquemines/St. Bernard Parish at (504) 433-3664 or (504) 278-4234.

DOGS MAY BE POISONEDBY COMMON HOUSEHOLD ITEMS

Mushrooms that are appearing in lawns pose a toxic risk to dogs. Dogs of any age can be affected, but young animals are more curious, so they may be at greater risk. Some may need an unpleasant experience with mushrooms to learn not to eat them.

The effects produced by toxins in mushrooms vary from mild signs of an upset stomach to lethal organ damage. Poisoning in cats occurs less often, probably because they are less likely to eat fungi.

There are a number of types of mushroom poisons. If a pet is seen eating toadstools or vomits pieces of them, action is needed. Samples of each type in the yard and the one known to have been ingested should be collected for identification. Put the samples in a paper bag and bring them to the veterinarian with the pet.

Most exposures result in mild stomach and intestinal upset because the type of mushroom eaten was not highly toxic. Signs of poisoning may be delayed for several hours after ingestion. When that happens, the illness that develops may not be related to mushroom exposure. In fact, when amanita species are involved, onset of vomiting and diarrhea are delayed, lasting for a few hours only to be followed by signs of liver and kidney failure.

Treatment for mild cases of mushroom poisoning may not be necessary. Vomiting can be induced to eliminate some of the material if done within two hours. Activated charcoal and a laxative can speed elimination from the bowel. When nervous system signs are pronounced, sedation may be necessary.

Pet owners should dispose of toadstools by putting them in the garbage. Removing the temptation may save a trip to the animal hospital.

Some ornamental plants are potential sources of pet poisonings.

Dogs, especially puppies and dogs that are home alone most of the day, often chew on plants. Pet birds may eat bits of leaves put into their cages by a child. Many ornamental plants contain one or more toxicants capable of harming these animals.

The important factor that prevents this from being a frequent problem is the amount eaten—the dose consumed. Azaleas, for example, may be fatal to a 60 pound goat that eats 1 or 2 pounds of leaves. A dog suffering from boredom generally will not eat a comparable amount of a plant. An exception was the miniature poodle that wolfed down a potted miniature azalea and was sick for two days.

A German shepherd was severely poisoned after eating more than 50 berries and other parts of the plant yesterday, today and tomorrow. Alkaloids in the plant produced convulsions and then coma, which persisted for days.

Seeds produced by the palm-like Cycas revoluta plant caused life-threatening liver damage in a young dog years ago. A cocker spaniel chewed and swallowed the root of “mother-in-law’s tongue” which resulted in persistent diarrhea for a week.

Veterinarians occasionally receive calls from dog owners concerning dieffenbachia or dumbcane. This plant contains irritants that cause an intense burning sensation of the mouth and lips.

Dogs are protected by their ability to vomit readily, resulting in the elimination of some toxicants before much is absorbed. Highly toxic things like the nuts of the tung oil tree or castor bean seeds can be fatal.

A pet budgie offered a bite or two of some of these plants probably will not survive. The birds also are sensitive to the avocado.

READY FOR THE TIGERS? DON’T WORRY ABOUT GETTING A TICKET FROM NOW ON

By Tony Onellion The annual trek to Baton Rouge to watch our beloved Tigers play football begins in September - a week after the Houston area LSU fans get their wonderful loyalty reward by having the first LSU game in their city since Gerald Ford was the president of the United States. The overwhelming generosity and marketing acumen of LSU continues to astound anyone who actually knows how to market and be generous. For if you want to spend upwards of $5,000 per year per seat for the privilege of watching the Tigers in Death Valley, you can get booze in your seat and parking reasonably close to the stadium. For the 90,000 or so regular Joes and students - well, screw us! LSU will continue to patchwork a venerable stadium, not use the former dorm rooms for expansion and basically insist you be happy with the gorgeous entrances that we didn’t pay for nor did the university as generous donors and the TAF took care of that tab. Now the school wants to place “tier pricing” on the remaining non-Alabama tickets this year. That means some faceless entity determines the price of your ticket based on variables such as opposing school ranking, stadium location, weather, weekend and probably the stock market closing bell on Thursdays before each game (unless the game is on Thursday. Or Friday. Or even Monday like the Tennessee game nine years ago). Who cares? Geaux Tigers and Geaux to Hell Old Faithful blue collar fans.

For the first time ever, every visiting school except for Alabama returned part of their ticket allotment to LSU to sell to the Tiger faithful. The SEC Network comes on board this year and this means the average non-rabid fan won’t bother fighting the b.s. that accompanies a trip to Baton Rouge but will stay home and watch the games on the tube. So, the less than stellar concessions and Tiger merchandise will sit on the shelves for a longer time. The overwhelming success of the SEC has been built on the unbridled support of millions of Southerners who will do anything and spend anything to “Roll Tide, War Eagle, Go Big Orange, Gator Chomp or Geaux Tiger!” The overwhelming greed of the SEC now comes into play but those who have built facilities like Bryant Denny Stadium, the new Texas A&M stadium and the changes at Mississippi State will continue to feed off the benefits, at least partially, of a red hot product. Those schools like Ole Miss, Tennessee and LSU will begin to suffer. Especially LSU. For the powers that be in the Athletic Department of the Old War Skull don’t give a damn about what you and I think about anything unless the check to the school’s athletic department contains at least five figures to the left of the decimal point.

Me, I have a choice. I’ve put my money where my mouth is and sold my season tickets to a good friend whose son starts LSU this fall. I took that money and a bit moreand purchased two SBLs for the new Levis Stadium in Santa Clara. So- you joined the rich set, you Left Coast Hippie! Well, not really. Yes, I’m from that area. Yes, I’ve been a 49er fan a few years longer than I’ve been an LSU fan. But as I explained last year, this is as much of a business move as a fan move. For those not easily bored, let me reiterate.

A SBL is a Stadium Building License which essentially gives the holder ownership of the seats in the facility for any and all events held in that venue. You are given ten years to pay for the licenses. You can choose to buy any or all of the event tickets, including: Paul McCartney concert tickets, major league soccer, Cal/Oregon football in October, the Pac 12 Championship game, high end high school football jamborees and any NFL playoff games in the stadium and of course, 49er season tickets. In return, you get an account where you can sell your tickets for the going market rate and entree into a football atmosphere that heretofore could only be dreamt about. So you go to a couple of games a year, sell the rest for enough profit to pay for the license fee and season tickets for the 49ers and perhaps both trips to the coast for the game. Perfectly legal and acceptable. Right now, tickets for 49er home games are going for anywhere from double to seven times face value on the aftermarket. Once a person tires of all this, the SBLs are sellable commodities like real estate and we know what appreciation real estate has in Silicon Valley. Essentially, I might be able to attend two to three games a year for free and make a profit on the licenses when I no longer want to or can go to the games. And take in an LSU game. And even a Saints game. Can’t beat Dat!

Descriptions of the new Levis Stadium could take another two columns. Suffice it to say, the place rocks. Less than 69,000 seats, no renovations for at least 30 years, if ever, all wi-fi with chair back seats and t.v.s everywhere. And a stadium app, where you can store your tickets, order your concessions without leaving your seat, watch replays on your mobile device and check out restroom usage and anticipated waiting time. Much of this technology has been in play in the NBA and one or two major league baseball parks but never implemented before in a football stadium You can drink domestic, imported, tap and bottled beer and a wide range of wines in the stadium. Plus 18 entrees. All at the concession stands. Plus a museum and team store. Public transportation less than a football field away from the North end zone gates. It’s safe, weather’s great, it’s outdoors, no crappy seats, nosebleed only on the east side and that’s 40 rows lower than Tiger Stadium. All this without buying a box or suite or having to hobnob. Yes, you should be a fan but come on!! Niner fans in South Louisiana are not too hard to find. And does anyone down here hate going to San Francisco for a long weekend or vacation? They love us South Luzianans out west as much as we love going out to San Francisco and the wine country. I mean….it could be Atlanta or Tampa Bay and who needs that? Or the relatively soulless Charlotte, North Carolina. (Note): the first event at the stadium was last Saturday - a major league soccer game with an attendance of 43,000. There were opening day glitches: problems with the sound system, long lines, traffic and parking problems - but the organization has another two weeks to work on these issues before the opening NFL exhibition game against Denver. Every new facility, including the Superdome, had an adjustment period when they opened. The Superdome was and is a fabulous venue and was a tremendous boost to a city not showing much growth at the time.

Back at Tigerland, the decision makers are talking about building a new ten to 12 million dollar athletic dorm and restaurant…..er, cafeteria. Inside Tiger Stadium the decision makers want to see if they can increase prices a dollar across the board for a limited and shopworn product line. Hell, you can’t even get a spoon half the time to eat the overpriced frozen lemonade. And when have they ever had enough hot chocolate or coffee on a cold game day or night? Or enough paper towels and soap in the restrooms? How about those condiments presented in a manner worse than at Angola? (nice 5 gallon jalapeño jar there, guys! Don’t you like the 5 gallon pump-don’t-work-half-the-time mustard and ketchup holders too! Relish? Use the community spoon! Napkins? Grab a bundle when we throw them out there. Plenty of square inches to spread out your purchase and slather on the condiments. Yummy)!

Those who want to see 100,000 fans in Tiger Stadium will have one chance to do so this year when the Tide visit in November. Otherwise, you can entertain yourself by counting the empty seats in the North end zone. And in the upper upper decks. And don’t look too closely into those expensive boxes. They might not be completely filled.

Maybe half to 3/4ths filled. While the football Tigers are tearing up the field, the bean counters will be tiering up the prices and the long-time regular guy fan will be tearing up his eyes as the innocence, affordability and fun of college football continues to erode at an astonishing rate. Just wait ’til they allow amateur players to do one and done on the collegiate football level. Won’t happen? Tons of dead presidents in green and black say it will happen sooner than later.
