Sheriff Lonnie Greco is warning the public of another Internal Revenue Service (IRS) telephone scam that made its way to at least one parish resident late last week. The resident reported receiving two automated phone calls saying that the IRS was going to sue the resident and they should call telephone number 425-329-8669. That number is a spoofed number, which is subscribed to someone in the State of Washington. Since Friday, August 21, citizens from across the country reported receiving the same call. The calls apparently originated from scammers overseas. If anyone received a similar call from this number or any similar ones, please report the incident to the real IRS at the following:

• Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484 or, • File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Add “IRS Telephone Scam” to the comments in your complaint. Residents may also contact the Sheriff’s Office at 504-564-2525.

SHERIFF WARNS PUBLIC OF IRS TELEPHONE SCAM

The IRS will never: • Angrily demand immediate payment over the phone, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.

• Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

• Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

• Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.

• Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good! With all this hot weather and storms around we spent a few hours at the dock. Our goal was to find live bait and get some amberjack first. The bait was nowhere to be found so I went to plan B. We had jigs but these guys were not interested in the work involved. I set up a bait rig and dropped down with what we had. The way I rigged it we were in business.

We had to break out the tape measure for this one but he was legal by 2 inches. Much to our surprise we had some bonus fish coming aboard to go in the box. We were into a few almaco jacks and this 24.6 pounder is the biggest I have ever caught or seen around here.

Because of our late start we were limited on time and the storms were forcing us to change our plans as they started building up again in the afternoon. We decided to run into state water and see if we could pick up a limit of red snapper.

This time the sharks were not as thick and we found the red snapper easily. There were some sharks around looking for a free meal and I dealt with a few of them. As we were finishing up our snapper limit we were lucky enough to land a nice cobia to add to our box.Once again we had to dodge the storms. We did not want to get trapped in the river in this mess.

We were able to ease around the back side of this just getting a little wet. Another one was forming just behind this and we were able to thread the needle between the large one on the lower part and the small one at the top.

Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Enforcement Division agents arrested six subjects on board two vessels for alleged oyster violations in St. Bernard Parish on Aug. 28.Agents arrested Glenn J. Cascio Sr., 54, and Glenn J. Cascio Jr., 35, both of St. Bernard, from one vessel and Baron T. Navarro, 40, of Mereaux, Sotelo A. Galdino, 36, of Seabrook, Texas, Rigoberto Badillo-Gomez, 38, Mereaux, and Jose Camalgo, 18, of of Seabrook, Texas, from another vessel for taking oysters during a closed season. Navarro was also cited for failing to comply with refrigeration requirements.Due to numerous complaints of illegal oyster harvesting on the State Seed Grounds in Drum Bay, agents set up surveillance nearby and at 3:30 p.m. observed two oyster vessels enter the area and begin dredging. The Drum Bay public grounds are currently closed to all oyster harvesting.

Agents stopped both vessels and found each to have loose oysters on their decks and in their dredges. Agents seized all four dredges and a total of 136 sacks of oysters, which were returned to the water. All men were booked into the St. Bernard Parish Jail.Taking oysters during a closed season brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Any person convicted of this violation may only harvest oysters from a vessel that employs a vessel monitoring system monitored by LDWF for a period of one year. Failing to comply with refrigeration requirements carries a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail.Agents participating in the case are Capt. Stephen McManus, Lt. Scot Keller, Sgts. Keith Francis, Adam Young, Mike Garrity and Villere Reggio, Agent Jason Gernados and Senior Agent Richard Clark. For more information, contact Adam Einck at 225-765-2465 or [email protected].

LDWF’s License to Win! Sweepstakes Winners Announced

As part of it’s first annual License to Win! promotion, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries in partnership with the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation awarded five lucky winners for its July saltwater license holder drawing. Winners drawn on August 1 include John Burke, Candice Gussman, Sheila Lapeyrouse, Carla Pratt, Sanford Roy and Timothy Scanio. The winners were among thousands of names entered when they purchased a 2015-16 recreational saltwater fishing license. The sweepstakes includes fives monthly prize winners of a YETI Tundra 45 ice chest, Shimano Curado G-Loomis Combo or gift cards from Academy Sports and Outdoors, Texaco and Whole Foods Market. The License to Win! sweepstakes encourages anglers to provide accurate contact information to participate in a survey (LA Creel) that helps LDWF manage their fishery. LA Creel is the data-gathering survey that allows LDWF biologists to manage our fisheries at localized levels across the state. The success of LA Creel will not only allow the Department to better manage fisheries, but will ultimately maximize the amount of fishing opportunities for Louisiana anglers. This promotion has just begun, so visit your nearest license vendor or go online (www.wildlifelicense.com) to purchase your recreational saltwater license to be eligible for next month’s drawing. The department will continue to select five winners each month, and one lucky angler will take home the grand prize, a 22 foot bay boat, trailer and motor donated by Venice Marina, Mercury Outboards and Mike Gerald’s Trailer Depot.Rules and additional information can be found at http://www.fishla.org/license-win-sweepstakes/.

Spring/Summer Brings Family Fishing Action at LDWF’s Family Fish Fests

Fall is just around the corner, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced they will again host a series of Family Fish Fest events across the state. In its second year, this program provides a unique opportunity for families to learn fishing basics and participate in activities to increase fishing knowledge and skill. The first 50 registrants for each event will receive a complimentary rod and reel, and the first 100 registrants will receive a fishing goodie bag. Competitive categories are available for nearly all legal fish species, and every participant is automatically entered into a raffle for outdoors prizes courtesy of event sponsors. Entry for each event is $10 per participant (except for the September 26 event), and includes a t-shirt and lunch. Participants must provide their own fishing equipment and bait. Events will begin shortly after sunrise and will conclude by noon. The competition portion of each event will include divisions for all ages and fishing categories for multiple species, with a boat division at locations that have launch access. Live redfish and speckled trout will be tagged and released by LDWF biologists in conjunction with the Louisiana Cooperative Marine Fish Tagging Program at all saltwater locations. Outside of the competitive arena, numerous additional outdoor activities will be available, including a mobile touch tank, fish identification, fish ageing, knot tying, casting tutorials and arts and crafts. Robbie the Redfish, LDWF’s fish tagging mascot, will be onsite for photo opportunities and to greet guests. The 2015 Family Fish Fest series is made possible by the following sponsors: CCA Louisiana, Pure Fishing, Dufrene Building Materials, Jeff Davis Parish Tourist Commission, Myrtle Grove Marina, Friends of Grand Isle, The Angler Magazine, Coon Neck Wildlife and Art Gallery, Faux Pas Prints, Marsh and Bayou Outfitters and Emprint Moran Printing.Family Fish Fests are also made possible by the help of dedicated volunteers who devote time to share their fishing expertise with event participants. Volunteering with the department provides an opportunity to share your passion for fishing and other outdoor activities with anglers of all ages and levels of experience. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please email [email protected]. The series is hosted in conjunction with Pure Fishing, CCA Louisiana and the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation. For more information and sponsorship opportunities, contact Danica Williams at [email protected] or (504) 628-7282. Hope you have been crafting away. We have been busy going thru things in the craft room. Did not realize just what I had stuffed in corners and closets. Yes, it is definitely time to put things where they belong and get rid of some things I know I will never use. But, than again, it is so hard to say I will never use those things again. Because the minute you get rid of it, you need it. Isn’t that always the case?

I am waiting on a painting pattern I ordered from Renee Mullins. I promised I would donate a

couple things for the Archbishop Shaw Car Show that will be held on Sept. 12. They

will be raffling off all sorts of great prizes. They are planning a fun filled day with all sorts of things going on. Of course there is the Car Show, and the Alumni Association will be hosting their Shrimp & Jambalaya Cook Off. And those boiled shrimp and the jambalaya

sure taste good! But wait, besides all that, the Parent Association will also be

hosting a Craft Show! That sounds like one a fun filled day to me! So…f you have a car you

love and want to show it to everyone, and possibly win a prize for that beauty. Give Archbishop Shaw High School

a call and I know they will give you all the details. If you are a crafter and would like to take advantage of being part of the craft show, they will gladly tell you about to. You can also pick up your tickets for the Cook Off at the school. Or, for an application for the car show or craft show you can email me at [email protected] and I will make sure you get the application. So come on out and help support a really great school and have a wonderful time!Remember a little while back when I showed you the Halloween piece I was working on? Well, it’s finished! Now I only have to make two more. Getting the first done is always the hardest part for me when I know I have to make more than one. But, it’s done now so the rest should be easy. I just love the bright colors. I just love Renee Mullins’s designs. She is such a talented artist! I can hardly wait to get the other patterns in! That’s it for this time. Hope you have a crafty couple of weeks.Well, that’s it for this time. Hope you all have a craft couple of weeks. So what will your next project be? Mine…I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun.

The Plaquemines Parish Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is collecting donations through a Go Fund Me page to sponsor large transports to other animal rescues. In total, 16 dogs, including seven currently being held at Plaquemines Parish Animal Control, are leaving on two separate transports to Virginia and Canada. The Go Fund Me can be found under “Saving Lives in Louisiana Transport”, or the following link: http://www.gofundme.com/sa2bwhk. Shelter Director Chris Beebe said, “Transports like these are hands down one of the best ways for PAWS to save lives. Transports allow us to send animals that would do better in another environment to that place. It also allows us to pull more animals from animal control as we get the open kennel space, which saves more lives.” As Beebe mentioned, some dogs do better in different environments. One dog scheduled to go to Canada is Akita mix O’Malley. O’Malley has been at PAWS since December 2014, and due to his breed would do best in a cooler climate. Beebe said, “We are thrilled to be able to send O’Malley to a place where he will not only find a home, but one that is better for him location wise. He is an intelligent and kind dog, and he deserves the best home for him.” Unfortunately, transports are expensive and PAWS does not make any money on the eventual adoptions of each dog. Including a transport from earlier this summer, PAWS will be spending over $2,000 to transport a total of 24 dogs since June. Beebe said, “It is a small price to pay to save 24 lives, but one we need help paying.” Donations can be made through the Go Fund Me page, or checks made out to PAWS marked for transport costs can be dropped off at PAWS at 455 F. Edward Hebert Blvd., Belle Chasse, LA 70037.

Words to GROW by!Introducing Will Afton, County Agent, Our New Writer from LSU AG.

PLEASE WELCOME

WILL AFTON!

ORNAMENTAL PEPPERS ADD COLOR TOWORN OUT SUMMER FLOWER BEDS.

Ornamental pepper plants have been increasing with popularity over the last several years. This definitely makes since in South Louisiana where the pepper plant has been infused with local culture for hundreds of years. Researchers currently agree that the pepper plant originated from Mexico and other areas in Western Central America. This offers a little explanation on why they are seen almost everywhere in here in South Louisiana: because they can take the heat! Most people think of peppers when growing a vegetable garden but not the case anymore. Peppers are now being grown for their fruit color, fruit size, and foliage color. They handle the heat like their vegetable counterparts but instead of providing us with food they give us good color and contrast to help add some color to late season flower beds and to add some spice to combination containers. Ornamental peppers will thrive in areas that are well-drained and receive full sunlight. ‘Purple Flash’ produces gorgeous variegated foliage in shades of purple. The ‘Chilly Chilli’ pepper produces 2-4” inch fruit in shades of yellow, green, orange and red. Another popular variety is ‘Black Pearl’. It produces black foliage and a black fruit that turns red when ripe. All are available at local garden centers and plant retailers. See which one looks the best in your landscape!

FALL BLOOMING CASSIASSHOW THEIR TRUE COLORS.

By the time late summer arrives most gardeners, and even plants for that matter, are heat stressed and bloomed out. This is not the case of Cassia. Late summer marks the start of the season for fall blooming varieties is cassia plants. Cassias, typical fall blooming plants for Southern Louisiana, are represented by several species grown in the trade. The “Candlestick Tree”, which also goes by Cassia alata, has got to be one of the largest annual plants I know of. In several months, it will go from seed to over 10 feet tall where it blooms golden yellow flowers. Another interesting characteristic of the candlestick tree is that it is a host plant for the Cloudless Sulfur caterpillar. There are two other species of Cassia grown in the industry. Known to many gardeners as just flowering cassia or flowering senna, Cassia corymbosa and its sister species C. spendida are commonly planted as evergreen flowering shrubs this far south. Both are very similar Make sure you give them enough room to grow. I’ve rarely seen them reach over 10 feet but it’s not unheard of. They will typically average in size to about 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide. Give them full sun and a well-drained soil and they will return to you with beautiful flowers from September till the end of the year.

MUSCADINE GRAPES OFFER A NATIVE CHOICEFOR GRAPE LOVERS.

The inclusion of wine making, wine grapes and wine preferences into our everyday conversations has definitely given us something to talk about but has it given us something to grow? There is an interesting fact about American wine production which many have never heard. There is a wine distillery in every state in the United States of America. Grapes however have some trouble in southern states, especially those with annual rainfall and summer temperatures such as Louisiana. Disease and insect pressure keep most all of the commercial industry out of the state but that doesn’t mean we can’t grow it.

The muscadine grape offers Louisianians a native choice, a choice where we don’t need to be so careful when caring for it. There are two types of muscadines, black or bronze, based on the color of the fruit. They will typically ripen in August and extend into September. The best time to plant would be late in the fall when leaves have dropped and the plant begins the winter dormancy period. For bronze fruit varieties look for ‘Carlos’, ‘Fry’, ‘Pam’, and ‘Sweet Jenny’. For some recommended black varieties try ‘Cowart’, ‘Jumbo’, ‘Southland’, ‘Noble’, ‘Sugargate’, and Darlene’. For further information contact Will Afton, County Agent, St. Tammany Parish. (985)875-2635Check us out on the web at http://www.lsuagcenter.com/

ABSOLUTELY THE FINAL TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY STORY ABOUT KATRINA By

Tony Onellion Iwasn’t going to do a ten year anniversary about Katrina as virtually all of you went through it and most of you had stories to tell. The one thing that got overshadowed by the Katrina saga was the 38th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley on August 16th. It took the Katrina anniversary to do that. I bet most of you over 60 remember exactly where you were when you heard of The King’spassing on that hot August day. So, to the man who brought rock and roll into the heart of America, we remember your legacy during the 21 years you held sway. It’s just about three weeks later this year.

Back to Katrina. My daughter found a couple of pictures of our old offices on Pontchartrain after the storm. I remember the lack of moisture in the air during September. But my most lasting memory of Katrina will be Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends”. Written by the band’s frontman to commemorate the death of his father, the song was only 2 1/2 months old when Katrina hit.

The lyrics were so attuned to what we went through the first month after Katrina. No song, poem or story can better reflect the emotions of those days when we were without power, transportation, restaurants, housing and income. Many of us lost loved ones directly or indirectly to the storm. Thousands were relocated, many of whom stayed in their new promised land, much like the immigrants who came to America in the 1800’s and 1900’s.Green Day’s light grunge treatment

of the song was perfect for me. “Seven years has gone so fast” was a reminder of the hurricanes of 1998 when many of us evacuated without the trauma produced by Katrina. 2004 also had us evacuate and it was probably a good thingwe did because it prepared us for the “contra flow” exercise which allowed most of us relatively quick egress from the danger zone. “The innocent can never last” really hit home as we experienced a disruption of our lives that most of us had never imagined, even during Betsy.

“As my memory rests, but never forgets what I lost” is self-explanatory. But the most chilling and insightful lyric was the title, “wake me up when September ends.” September was a series of lines…lines for Red Cross vouchers, grocery vouchers, groceries themselves, FEMA trailers, a cheap pizza, gasoline, generators, gas cans, insurance claims, blue roofs. September was waiting for a subcontractor and the garbage men, utility workers and stores to reopen. September was navigating littered streets and the stench of garbage and dead animals. September was relocated football teams and bridges to nowhere. September was no freakin’ rain at all…the Sahara Desert came to our area and stayed until October. We say we remember August 29th but we really remember September 1-30, 2005. Few neighbors. Unscrupulous roofers and tree men. Ice chests. Room A/Cs. Crowded homes when you had a place to stay. Tough to make a living. But we also remember the goodness of our friends and neighbors, family and especially strangers…outsiders who came to help, many of whom stayed and made a difference for us. Our first responders in New Orleans were Canadian Mounties and the Mossad, followed by the National Guard. Much of the New Orleans Police Department was a disgrace during those first days. But law enforcement for most of the rest of the area was vigilant and trustworthy. Although we personally had no problems, my first act returning to Slidell was to arm myself. The cleanup was the hardest thing of all. Pulling out waterlogged furniture, file cabinets and appliances. Cleaning every single surface that you encountered. Lifting, carrying, piling up, staying filthy for days at a time.I’m not looking forward to a 20th or 25th anniversary of Katrina. Since there was no further anniversary remembrance of 9/11, I don’t think it’s really necessary. My “I Survived Katrina” T-shirt is almost a rag now. I think that’s what I’ll turn it into this week.

Kindergarten students enjoyed a “photo booth” to have fun and get the first day jitters out!

Belle Chasse Academy recently welcomed their new Eagles! The 2015-2016 Kindergarten students walked the red carpet and enjoyed music and dancing and a photo booth while they waited for their teachers on the first day of school. After parents walked their students to class they gathered for a social in the school’s library sponsored by the Guidance Department. Some tears were shed…by students…and parents!
