Greetings North CountyBy Catherine Powers

Curry County Animal Shelter Supervisor

The Curry County Animal Shelter and Pennies for Pooches would like to invite you to join us in a food and fun filled afternoon at the Riverview Restaurant over looking the beautiful Rogue River for an all you can eat Pizza and salad fund raiser. All the proceeds go to our spay and neuter program. It has been a little over a year ago that Pennies for Pooches was formed and the hand full of volunteers wanted a cleaner, happier and better place to “house our hounds.” We have come such a long way in that short year and could not have done it without the communities help. We have paid to date almost $23,000 in veteri-nary bills. We have tried to spay and neuter every pit bull we can find, shelter dog or not. In Florence, Oregon if you own a Pit Bull their shelter will pay to have it altered. We would love to have the ability to do that too. That’s why we are doing the pizza fund raiser, funds are low and we need to replenish. Please join us for a really great cause. All the

Senior Center NewsThe sun shone down on us Saturday, September 12, for our second annual Senior Center picnic at the Humbug Mountain State Park Day Use Area. Be-sides members from our local center, a sizable group from the Gold Beach Se-nior Center came to join us. The Park Service loaned us their great barbecue so we could cook ‘what we brung’. Be-sides the hot dogs, steaks, and chicken that were consumed, lots of delicious

fun will happen October 3rd, Riverview Restaurant 541 247-7321 from 4-8pm. Call the shelter for more details. 541-247-2514.

Thank you for the space in the paper and to the people of Port Orford, thank you for your constant support. I have told the Sheriffs department more than once the little town of Port Orford doesn’t see me much as South County but the support the shelter gets from your small commu-nity is fabulous.

Hope to see you at the Riverview on the 3rd.

potluck dishes were shared by all. If you weren’t there, you missed a fun day.

Our September 29 member meeting at 11:00am will feature a guest speaker from the Curry County Home Health and Hospice. A brief meeting, lunch and dime bingo will follow, as usual. Pleas join us.

The Center purchased and installed a dishwasher that was sorely needed for our much-used kitchen facility. A big thanks to all of the members who trans-ported and installed it for us. Donations are still being taken to cover the cost of the dishwasher.

The Bargain Basement at the Center is in need of kitchen items such as sil-verware, bowls, skillets, pans, etc. Do-nations can be brought to the Center Monday through Friday from 9:30am to 1:30pm.

Travel DocumentaryThe Langlois Public Library is pleased to present Rick Steves’ Personal Impres-sions of Iran, a one-hour travel docu-mentary. Steves, a popular travel writer and public television host, explores past and present Iran and its people. You’ll discover the splendid monuments of Iran’s rich and glorious past, learn more about the 20th-century story of this per-plexing nation, and experience Iranian life today in its historic capital and in a countryside village. Most important, you’ll meet the people of a nation whose government has so exasperated and challenged our own.

Join us at the Langlois Library on Fri-day, September 18 at 7:00PM to watch the DVD and ponder questions for a post-viewing discussion. Free of charge. Sponsored by the Langlois and Port Or-ford Public Libraries working together to provide quality programs to our com-munities.

Letter to the Editor,Port Orford! What do we have going for us and how can we use it to grow wise-ly? First, we have location. We are the midway point between Gold Beach and Bandon and could be the staging stop for bus tour companies; we are the farthest west town on the coast. We have his-tory. We are the oldest town on the coast having been established in 1851. Then there is the Battle at Battle Rock and the Japanese submarine during WW2. We have heritage as settlers, ranchers, log-gers and fishermen. Our town reflects this history in its layout, construction and its very atmosphere or ambience. Our population is made up of everything from native born to transplant retirees, bringing together tradition and a rich variety of social, educational and busi-ness backgrounds. We are a town where many step forward as volunteers to do a tremendous amount of the work that keeps our community functioning. We have some of the best climate in the world and world class hunting and fish-ing within a half hour drive.

We have all of this going for us and yet our local governments, past and present, have been unable to intelligently formu-late the necessary plans and lead us for-ward so that we may more fully realize our town’s true potential.

What are some of the things that are holding us back? Let’s start thinking about those and exchanging some ideas.

it would be like, Curry County Hospice will be providing volunteer training this Fall giving you an opportunity to see what hospice volunteering is all about. The training consists of nine action-packed, informational sessions covering end-of-life care, choices, communica-tion, grief and loss and much, much more.

The classes are also beneficial for any-one seeking to improve their under-standing of the needs of those facing a terminal illness, as well as to better understand the dynamics of grief and loss. Although, potential patient care volunteers are required to take the train-ing, persons attending are not obligated to volunteer with Curry County Home Health & Hospice.

Trainings will be held in both the North and South County. On Fridays in Brook-ings at SWOCC (420 Alder Street) classes will start September 25th until November 20th from 12 pm-3 pm.

Battle Rock Planting ProjectThe Sunset Garden Club began their Battle Rock Planting Project last Sat-urday morning. Several garden club members showed up to remove weeds and the old irrigation system which is no longer working. The next step in the project is to work in compost improve the soil, apply a bark mulch, and install a new irrigation system. The Garden Club plans on putting in a few big boulders in the planted area nearest to Jefferson and Highway 101 and then plant grass and low plants that do well in the wind and salty air environment and that don’t need much water in summer or mainte-nance. The Planting Projecting area is approximately 25 feet wide and 40 feet long and is adjacent to the Battle Rock Wayfinder Point sign. This project is en-tirely funded with private donations and if you would like to contribute you can sent a check to the Sunset Garden Club, PO Box 204, Port Orford, OR 97465 and put Battle Rock Planting Project in the memo so that it will go to that fund.

Meanwhile down below the park out in the ocean there were at least nine surfers enjoying the waves while the gardeners did their thing.

Letter to the Editor,Had a busy weekend in and out of the news! First, a big event not much re-ported on by the papers or TV news channels, a 9/12 event. What’s that, you say? It commemorates the day after 9/11, when America came together to stand united against tyranny and terror-ism. Big happenings in our nations capi-tal, people coming together to protest “big” government and excessive taxes, repeated around the nation in many state capitals and major cities. Where was the coverage??? Second, this got lots of press time, Congressman Joe Wil-son interrupting President Obama with the words “You Lie” during a speech. What wasn’t reported was that after he apologized to the President, he went on record saying “I will not be Muzzled!”, meaning his First Amendment Right to Freedom of Speech. And that is what many Americans are saying these days, “We want our voices heard, and you bet-ter listen!” Folks, the best way to make ourselves heard is to vote the bums out who insist on spending us into abject poverty! Smaller government=better government!

Nesting Season EndsThe nesting season for the western snowy plover has ended. Dry sand clo-sures are lifted for habitat sites at Ban-don Beach State Natural Area, New River area and other beaches. The ac-cess restrictions affected 18 miles of beach in Oregon.

Even though the official nesting season is over, biologists caution plovers are still active and ask people to pay atten-tion when they are on the beach. “There are still several plovers out and about on the beaches, raising their family. The weather has been warm lately, and the plovers may have nested later this year because of summer’s later arrival,” said Kerrie Palermo, Wildlife Biologist with the Bureau of Land Management. Popu-lation numbers for this summer are still being tabulated, and the results of this year’s nesting season will be available later this fall.

Additional information on plover habi-tat and beach restrictions can be ob-tained from the Forest Service, (541) 902-8526, or the BLM, (541) 756-0100.

City Council MeetingThe Port Orford City Council meets on Thursday, September 17, 6:00pm, in the city council chambers.

No CabezonSport boat anglers may not retain cabe-zon after Sunday, September 13, 2009. Fishing for other bottomfish – such as most rockfish species, lingcod and greenling – remains open.

Cabezon harvest in Oregon has been limited in recent years by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission because health of the stock is uncertain. Land-ing data for the sport fishery indicates that the ocean boat harvest cap of 15.8 metric tons for cabezon has been met.

Sport boat anglers may continue to har-vest other legal species, but may not re-tain cabezon in the saltwater boat sport fishery. Shore anglers, including shore-based divers, may still keep cabezon.

“Cabezon have an excellent survival rate when released,” said Lynn Mattes, assistant project leader for marine rec-reational groundfish fisheries for the Or-egon Department of Fish and Wildlife. “Unlike rockfish, cabezon do not have swim bladders and therefore do not suf-fer from barotraumas (expansion or rup-ture of the swim bladder when the fish are brought up from deep waters) that can cause stress, injury, and sometimes death in rockfish.”

Hearing on Raising FeesA public hearing on the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s proposal to raise state park camping and day-use fees will take place Sept. 21 at Cham-poeg State Heritage Area.

Classic Car CulturePort Orford’s Show and Shine event sponsored by the Port Orford Rotary Club registered more than 60 cars de-spite a morning downpour. “Neither rain or snow or dead of night” could deter this year’s enthusiasts at the car show held on September 6 on 11th street out-side the community building. The event featured cars from as far away as Rich-field, CA; Dallas, OR; and Grants Pass, OR and visitors as far away as France.

Big winners included a 1930 Model A Ford owned by Carl and Sharon James from Gold Hill, Oregon, with the Rotary President’s award. Both the Chamber of Commerce award and the Best of show belonged to the purple 1931 Ford Coupe belonging to Jim Baldwin from Gold Beach, OR.

Not to be outdone, smiling Leon Brown from Myrtle Point, Oregon won the cov-eted metal chicken raffle prize and the 50/50 money award plus his 1961 Chev-rolet Impala bubble top was among the people’s choice awards.

The hearing will run from 6-8:30 p.m. in the park’s visitor center, 8239 Cham-poeg Road NE, near St. Paul and New-berg.

The fee increase, the first considered in 13 years, would raise camping rates for most sites by $4 per night and boost day-use fees collected at 26 parks from $3 to $5 per carload. Details and a link to the complete text of the proposed rule change are online at http://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/PARKS/fee_increase.shtml. OPRD is accepting written comments on the proposed change until 5 p.m., Sept. 23.

The Champoeg visitor center is acces-sible to people with disabilities. Special accommodations may be arranged up to 72 hours in advance by calling 503-986-0655.

Library Friends’ NewsThe Friends of the Port Orford Library held their first meeting after a short summer break. Among topics under dis-cussion was the upcoming book sale on October 10 and 11. As always, we wel-come donations; however, we are not able to sell encyclopedias, textbooks, Reader’s Digest Condensed or Harle-quin romance novels, so please don’t give them to us.

Letter to the Editor,Reading Jim Hajek’s weekly letters make one wonder what made Jim move to Port Orford in the first place.

If Jim feels that Port Orford is lacking in so many aspects why did he not find a more suitable town for his needs?

Sincerely,

Jay Morrow
