Brenda also handled the reservations for the Port Orford Community Building for the past many years. This was another thing that went on here that was part of our volunteer efforts and one can only hope someone at the City wakes up and has the courtesy to thank Brenda as her efforts made it possible for people and organizations to rent the building. It brought in a few thousand dollars for the City coffers and it was Brenda who handled the transactions so professionally. So Long! And thanks

for all the crabs!

Thank You Port OrfordBy Evan Kramer

This is our final issue of Port Orford Today and also the final week our store is open for regular business and mainly I want to remember a few people and events and thank the people of Port Orford who supported us for 21+ years.

We started our paper, Port Orford Today!, in our house using a copy machine with the first issue coming out on November 2, 1990. It was one 8 ½ by 14 gold sheet folded over. We had seven display ads including one from the Silver Door, owned by Paul and Pat Lee, which became known for the slogan “Remember the Silver Door”. The only one of the seven original advertisers still in business is the Rick Cook Gallery. Rick Cook had enough faith in us to put in ad for his latest art show and it helped us get started. Thank you Rick. Looking back at all the businesses that have advertised in our paper reminded me how many stores, restaurants and art galleries have come and gone over the years. The pace of change even in Port Orford is relentless and it continues to this day.

Our second issue featured eight advertisers including the Port and Starboard Restaurant. The Smith Family

have been constant advertisers in this paper and we appreciate the early help. They are the only business left of the eight in that paper and I was constantly reminded of the amount of change in Port Orford since 1991.

We’ve had many people work with us at the Downtown Fun Zone over the past 21 years. We opened the store in February of 1991 and soon thereafter Glenna Smith started working for us. She was a very popular and well-loved person in Port Orford and did a lot to help us with the paperwork and billings. She was tragically killed in a one car auto accident on her way home for lunch on June 2, 1993 and is still missed. Later on Nancy Broadhead came to work at the DFZ and added her talents to the store. She was a dedicated, hard worker who later went on to work at the library. She moved to California after having had successful surgery for a cancerous tumor and later passed away down there.

Many other people have worked at this store but the one who has lasted the longest and had the most effect is Brenda Dell. She has been here over twelve years and has managed to focus on many areas and really made them her own. She handled the UPS shipping, business cards and rubber

stamps, the “front” room, ticket sales for different organizations, and much more. She is really more the face of this store than Valerie or I. And while the city is thanking Brenda how about them reconsidering their purchasing practices and shopping locally.

So many other people worked here over the years including Levi Thompson who has been holding up the fort on Saturday since we decided not to work on that day. Thanks to him and Ginelle Weber, Holly Klein, Sandy Eisman, Greg Broadhead, Flo Lichtig, Carol Malley, Larry Rhodes, and Tammy Fanning for their time here and for putting up with Valerie and I which was sometimes no small task. with her husband Michael was the heart and soul of this building and we miss her a lot. She was an excellent cook, businesswoman, friend and helped out so many people with their nutritional needs and questions.

Thanks also to Port Orford City Councilor Caroline Clancy for her efforts on behalf of the people of the City of Port Orford. She questions and probes city business on a level the other councilors don’t and for that she is much appreciated. Keep asking questions Caroline and be a voice for Port Orford and remember to ask about the water rate study.

People keep asking me if we own the whole building at 832 N. Highway 101 which we bought in 1993. The answer is yes and we have two long time tenants and friends in the building who will continue to be here for your business. They are Carol Malley at Uptown Frames and Michael McDonough at the Seaweed Grocery and once our closing out sale is over remember this building

will be far from empty. The phrase “shop local” is spoken and written about constantly and is worth supporting but often many of us are all too willing to sacrifice our local businesses for supposedly lower prices. The quest for the best deal out of town or on the Internet cost the Borders bookstore chain their business but they are just a big example of what is happening in America as all the big video store chains collapsed as well along with countless small owner operated businesses.

The store is closing for business reasons as our business “model” so to speak was heavily reliant on video, DVD and game rentals and that part of the business has dropped way off. The other things we sell like computer parts and ink sales, photocopies, stationary, UPS, and Port Orford Today do not generate enough money to keep the store going any more. While we could reinvent ourselves and continue, we have both reached retirement age and chose not to make the effort. We appreciate the support the town has shown for us over the years but the main piller holding us up moved over to NetFlix, streaming,

Red Box, free rentals and 250 channels on cable or satellite. The demographics of Port Orford have changed radically since 1991 with far fewer families with children coming in our store. The Port Orford Today free weekly paper was in the long run our most popular offering which has been proven to me over and over again in the past three weeks with an outpouring of support that has been overwhelming. It took a long time to gain this kind of acceptance as our paper isn’t put out on newsprint, was never the paper of record for Port Orford or other government entities but over the years the people took it to heart and accepted it and looked forward to the latest offering. It started out as a free paper and ends up that way and is part of the trend in this country for free weeklies which you can find everywhere from Portland to Los Angeles. We printed more than a few letters to the editor over the years that upset many people but we always tried to print all sides and as much as we had room for in this small format paper.

What’s next? We will reopen next Saturday and Sunday but only to sell off

the videos, DVDs, games and what we have left of the stationary and computer supplies and then we will decide whether to attempt to sell the building and land or rent our part of the building. We will continue to be part of the community but won’t have much of a voice anymore without the Port Orford Today! It’s an odd feeling but all things must pass as George Harrison once sang and so must the Downtown Fun Zone. The owners aged quite a bit over the years and it’s time to retire. Thank you and thank you again for your love and your support over the years. Things are good in Port Orford so let’s enjoy what we have here and all our fine people and businesses. And good luck to Theresia Hewitt who has purchased our duplicator and plans to have the first issue of her paper out by next Thursday. We wish her well.

Bag It Comes To Port OrfordCommunity leaders at Rogue Natural Living are hosting a screening of the new, award-winning environmental documentary Bag It at the Port Orford Water Festival, noon, Saturday April 14.

Bag It follows “everyman” Jeb Berrier as he tries to make sense of our dependence on plastic bags. Although his quest starts out small, Jeb soon learns that the problem extends past landfills to oceans, rivers and ultimately human health.

The average American uses about 500 plastic bags each year, for about twelve minutes each. This single-use mentality has led to the formation of a floating island of plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean more than twice the size of Texas.

The film explores these issues and identifies how our daily reliance on plastic threatens not only waterways and marine life, but human health, too. Two of the most common plastic additives are endocrine disruptors, which have been shown to link to cancer, diabetes, autism, attention deficit disorder, obesity and infertility.

School Board ChangeThe regularly scheduled Port Orford-Langlois School Board meeting for April has been postponed from April 9 and has been rescheduled to April 16, at 7:00pm.

The screening at the Port Orford American Legion Hall, 421 11th Street, is part of Bag It’s campaign to urge towns across the country to become “Bag It Towns.” Doing so would require Port Orford to ban plastic bag use voluntarily or via ordinance and/or to pass an ordinance that places a small charge on single-use disposable bags. Cities including Washington, DC and San Francisco, as well as Ireland, Italy and China have already implemented similar policies to curb their plastic use.

Rogue Living recognizes the importance of reducing single-use plastic use for the safety of our community and environment. Rogue Living specializes in Organic Baby, Mama, Family, Detoxify Your Home, Office, School, Green Consultations, and we are soon to be a certified Holistic Health Coach. Rogue Living is located at 103 N. Redwood Hwy. Suite B, Cave Junction, Oregon or online at www.RogueNaturalLiving.com .

The Port Orford Water Festival and the Bag It Screening is open to the public.

Several people have asked me what my second favorite organization was in Port Orford after I mentioned my favorite organization is the Common Good after I wrote about them in the paper. I have voted over and over with my donations of money, food, and clothing to the Common Good and with money and books to the Port Orford Public Library

so these are the two organizations closest to my heart, wallet, and mind. Food is the building block of life and making sure people are fed is very important to me but the care and feeding of the mind comes in a close second and that’s where our library excels. This doesn’t take anything away from our other fine organizations like the Rotary Club, Community Ambulance, Senior Center and so many others which all deserve our support.

City Council MeetsThe Port Orford City Council meets in a workshop session on Thursday, April 19, at 1:00pm, followed by their regular meeting at 1:30pm, in the city hall council chambers. This is a change in the council meeting time because of a League of Oregon Cities meeting later that day in Bandon.

Letter To The Editor,It’s hard to think... to really think and process information today. It is a cogni-tive process that doesn’t confuse “feel-ings” with critical thinking. It doesn’t confuse sound bites, hearsay and just crap with the facts. When someone pref-aces their comments with “I feel”, you might be suspect of any factual content to follow.

Recently in the Port Orford Today, a claim was presented that the recently signed Executive Order (EO) of 16 March, 2012 is akin to some sort of dictatorial coup by the Obama admin-istration. This uninformed conclusion is crap.

In 1950, President Truman signed in to law the Defense Production Act of 1950 (the “Act”), at the outset of the Korean War, to ensure the availability of the na-tion’s industrial resources to meet the national security needs of the United States. As recently as 2009, a bipartisan vote by unanimous consent, affirmed the reauthorization of the Act. The 2009 reauthorization was co-sponsored by Christopher Dodd [D-CT] and Richard Shelby [R-AL].

Title 1, Section 104 of the Act clarifies the limitations and constraints of the Act without having prior “Congressional Authorization”.

Additionally, without further congres-sional action, this Act terminates on September 30, 2014.

The Executive Order of 16 March is titled, “National Defense Resources Preparedness”.

The EO’s “Sec 103” specifically ad-dresses the “Act” with the intent to improve preparedness, communication, efficiencies and response within the Act.

This EO is not markedly changed from previous EO’s related to the ACT.

Presidents since Truman have had the powers of this “Act”.

Let that sink in for a moment...

541-260-2703 Bandon, OregonHappy National Library Week

(April 8-14)First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries - school, public, academic and special – participate. The first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme “Wake Up and Read!”

So wake up from a long winter and visit the Port Orford Public Library. Stop by this week to enjoy the new art display, attend Game Time on Saturday, read magazines, play chess, check your emails, read poetry in the kid’s room, and—oh, yes—check out some books!

Letter To The Editor,Since taking office, Commissioner Waddle’s “management style” has been a series of petty pay-backs and personal vendettas.

Most public have been the departures of the former elected County Treasurer of twelve years, Izzy Brock, and the former Economic Department Director, Susan Brown. After many publicized incidents and the stripping away of her staff, Izzy Brock suffered health issues, took leave and ultimately resigned her office last year.

Waddle and Rhodes tried twice to get rid of Susan Brown and the Economic Development Department. The first time, while former county commissioner Georgia Nowlin was still on the board of commissioner, the public outcry and push back stopped their efforts. Last year, with David Itzen on the BOC, they succeeded. Now the lottery funds

for Economic Development go to the Commissioner’s Office.

Less public, but equally disturbing are other incidents of attempted intimidation of county employees and department heads. In March, 2010, county planners bravely investigated and wrote up county and state violations involving a contractor and Commissioner Rhodes at the Brookings Airport. In response to their diligence, Waddle went down to the department looking for the director and “expressed his displeasure” in several ways, per a dept. memo. The two planners are no longer with the county.

Former Veteran’s Service officer, Frank Van Meter also felt “an attempt to intimidate” expressed in a May 2011 county email to Waddle shortly before he retired four months later.

It’s time to Vote Out Waddle and end his mean-spirited brand of “management.”

This Week In The GardenBy Jennifer Ewing

It has been a lot of fun writing these gardening articles for the Fun Zone paper this year and last year. Evan has been so kind and gracious to me as he deciphers my Underwood typewriter peckings and I want to thank him for allowing me to be a part of his newspaper.

The support and recognition from the community has been overwhelming and I thank you all for that.

come for Yoga at 6pm you may stay for the extended time til 8:30pm..allocate 2.5 hours for these weds.

Beginning SAT. April14th, 21st,28th.1:45-4:15pm 2 hours-Teaching class’ of 2 of Lili’s great Teachers on recorded disc or tape...Joel.S. Goldsmith, and Barbara Mary Muhl...

Barbara’s class’ on Relationships, and SKF Script Kid and Fantasyland.” The Truth that makes you free.” This is what Barbara called these works.

I’m all about education in order to get to know a subject better and that is all I have tried to do is educate you new gardeners and the accomplished gardeners. My phone has rung with questions from the readers and I’ve gone to your homes to give advice and do consultations. The Port Orford Educational Demonstration Garden at the Senior Center is a living example of gardening for everyone to see. The Community Garden at Buffington Park is going on its third year of being sold out and I find that to be a great indicator of just how much gardening adds to your life and to the community.

Growing without chemicals, herbicides and pesticides is easy if you start with healthy soil and healthy plants. My motto is always ‘Observe’ your garden and its plants. Mother Nature will tell you what she wants and needs.

Keep up the good work, continue to educate yourselves and remember that I’m just a phone call away. Happy gardening! Thanks for reading T.W.I.G.

Letter To The Editor,Lucie La Bonte is the best choice for County Commissioner. She knows our County and she understands how government, at all levels, works. She will bring solutions to Curry’s financial problems and lead us into a secure and prosperous future.

Port Orford Jubilee NewsThe Jubilee would like to thank Evan and Valerie for their years of help. Without them who knows if our yearly 4th of July bash would have ever come off as big and smoothly as it has. Their aid will be sorely missed. To show how important they are/were, the Jubilee would like to announce that the talent/variety show has had a very large response. So big, that on June 2, 7:00PM, we are inviting our town and our neighbors to a bash of epic proportions. Dave Bartholomew, the Jubilees’s talent director has reported that we can offer a show of two and a half to three hours long. Thanks to Chris Speed and the Savoy Theater, the Jubilee is asking for a $10.00 donation, to view our talented locals and raise money for the fantastic fireworks show that we all have appreciated in the past. Let’s keep it going. Tad - VP Jubilee@541-332-0207.

P.S. On the same but different note the Jubilee has procured a dunk tank for the Fourth of July festivities. Think of the possibilities. You don’t like somebody, get them to participate. We are actively seeking out the most “hated” people in town. Tad and Milton have to make every list. Who wouldn’t want to throw at them? We are on the list. No tomatoes. Anybody else?

The Jubilee wants to thank everybody for their past participation and future participation. The Jubilee is a non-profit organization just for the 4th of July.

Student Of The MonthMarcus Scaffo has been chosen as the March Rotary club student of the month at Driftwood School. He is an outstanding student with a great attitude for learning and life. She supports our fishing industry and has diligently protected the rights of fishermen. She has always supported sustainable uses of our natural resources. She has the vision to bring development in the right way. She seeks to solve our financial problems with jobs in industries that will be supported by our natural environment without harming it.

She has proven to be honest, innovative, and hard-working. We don’t need the same worn-out suggestions to solve Curry’s problems. We need Lucie La Bonte. Please join me in voting for Lucie on Election Day.

The Rotary Club has invited Marcus and his parents to a luncheon at the American Legion Hall on Thursday, April 12, at noon to honor him as student of the month.

Letter To The Editor,Well, I’ve been sitting here for about an hour now wracking my brain for the “right” words to express to Valerie and Evan, and yes, Brenda and Levi also, how we feel about the closing of the Downtown Fun Zone and Port Orford Today. Most of what I’ve come up with, while sincere and heart-felt, either falls short or sounds a little “hokey”.

But then, looking over the last few issues of Port Orford Today and reading the “Say it isn’t so” notice and the letters from “Reader in Bandon”, Elijah and Beverly Hawk, and Jennifer Ewing I sense sincerity and warmth: nothing pretentious or self-serving. I can do no better.

Valerie and Evan, thank you for your civic devotion and unflagging integrity. You will be missed.

Damn! (or Darn!) I’m also going to miss those great travelogues. I think

Pistol River ConcertThe Pistol River Concert Association proudly presents: James Keelaghan, at the Pistol River Friendship Hall, April 14, 2012, 8:00 pm

James Keelaghan is an artist who has proven to be a man for all seasons. As the calendar pages have turned, for almost a quarter of a century now, this poet laureate of the folk and roots music world has gone about his work with a combination of passion, curiosity intent and intensity.

Possessed of an insatiable appetite for finding the next unique story line, Keelaghan forges his pieces with bril-liant craftsmanship and monogrammed artistic vision, making him one of the most distinctive and readily identifiable voices on both the Canadian and inter-national singer-songwriter scenes.

“I’ve always had the urge to write,” says the Calgary native who has been calling Winnipeg home for the past few years. “Some things weren’t being said in the way I wanted to say them, some thing were not being written about at all. That’s why I started to write the histori-

cal material. That led me to writing my own personal narratives as well.”

Keelaghan is a disciplined visionary with several aces up his sleeve. He loves language and history, a subject in which he earned a degree; he is a skilled thes-pian, which explains his ability to make an immediate connection with a live au-dience; and he has an ear for memorable melodies and harmonies that make those melodies glisten.

“ ... Performance-wise, James is as classy and compelling as ever, his gor-geously rich baritone voice and exem-plary guitar work the hallmarks of an artist in full command of his material and his resources.” - Netrhythms

Tickets are $15.00 and available at Wright’s Custom Framing in Brookings, and Gold Beach Books in Gold Beach. Tickets may also be reserved online at www.pistolriver.com/tickets or by call-ing 541-247-2848. A $5.00 student dis-count or refund available at the door with student ID.

Ocean Frontiers Documentary:

Ocean Frontiers: The Dawn of a New Era in Ocean Stewardship, a new film by Green Fire Productions, is premier-ing across the nation—to inspire and mobilize communities from coast to coast to better manage and conserve America’s vital ocean resources. Ocean Frontiers will play at Southwestern Or-egon Community College on Monday, April 23, 2012, 6:30 to 8:30 pm, at the Hales Center for Performing Arts on the Coos Campus. Oregon First Lady Cyl-via Hayes and Co-Speaker of the House, Representative Arnie Roblan will both be joining us to introduce the film. The film premiere is free.

Green Fire Productions’ executive di-rector and producer of Ocean Frontiers’ Karen Meyer stated, “At a time when conflicts over ocean resources dominate

State Explores OptionsThe Oregon Office of Emergency Man-agement (OEM) announced today that the Governor’s final appeal to FEMA for financial assistance for private homes damaged during the January 17 – 21 severe winter storm has been denied.

It was determined that the impact to Oregon residences did not meet the criteria established by the Stafford Act to qualify for the Individual Assistance Program. The state will explore all other options to assist people who had dam-age from this event. This includes other federal agencies, voluntary agencies and the private sector.

FEMA is currently working closely with the state and its local governments to provide assistance for damaged public infrastructure which was approved for 12 counties along with hazard mitiga-tion grant money for projects statewide as requested.

the media, we are excited to present the solution-oriented, bi-partisan stories of Ocean Frontiers. Ocean Frontiers clearly conveys that people across the country want to work together to sustain their coastal and ocean economies that depend on a healthy ocean.”

The Ocean Frontiers film premiere in Coos Bay, OR, is co-hosted by South-western Oregon Community College Associated Student Government, South Slough National Estuarine Research Re-serve, Coos Watershed Association, and Green Fire Productions.

This will be a great oppor-
