Portfolio of best work done at University of Sunderland.
Citation preview
This portfolio represents the highs of my fashion experience. The ‘collected works’ are those pieces of work that gained high marks, but also represent the ones that i enjoyed the most, gained greater satisfaction in creating from concept to product.
In each piece of work I have tried to explain what I like about it, a sense of achievement. The Fallen Magdalen title represents the last project of my de-gree and this portfolio develops the narrative of my journey that ended with the fallen magdalen.
Sarah Frankland April 2013.
I guess the first glimmer of realising my potential, ambition and acheivement in fashion was during the Chanel project. Although this was a highly creative and emotional process, thinking of my design, getting it down on paper and finishing a product was the most frustrating and yet satisfying journey.
I travelled to Manchester to visit a Chanel concession for primary research into the brand, target customer, colour range and style of clothing. I spent many hours with a sketchbook and pencil developing ideas from my research on the Chanel No. 5 perfume bottle. I must have done a hundred sketches but used my original sketch. There was blood sweat and tears as I made the dress. The final product was my finest hour to date.

From the frying pan into the fire...
Film making is a creative process like that of the Chanel dress, the brief was to create a fashion film based on an item of clothing or a fashion brand. I chose for my iconic product, the leather jacket as it never seems to be out of fashion. My research led me to the 1980’s film, ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’, starring Madonna.... and of course the iconic leather jacket!
I used images of American felon photographs, used the concept of rebellion set in an urban kaliedoscope of colour and lines, structures and buildings. Working with model’s was hugely satisfying. They are both graphic students and contributed immensly to the look and feel of the film. The directing mind was mine, harnessing a ‘team’ to produce a high level of performance and achievement.
The images here are stills from 3 minute film which is now on youtube.

I have used youtube, linkedin and my tumblr blog as a self promoting media to put my work out there!!
The pen is mighter then the sword.
So far I have showcased two different fashion media, dress design and manufacture and fashion film both of which have been born from a brief through university. Here I hope to demonstrate my command of another media, fashion journalism. I received an email from a MA student asking for contributions to a men’s magazine project. He chose the subject for my contribution, men’s travels bags for an autumn/winter issue. I enjoyed the challenge of researching the style of writing needed for this kind of journalism. I got into the mind set of factual reporting, humour and the world of men’s fashion. I have reproduced the full text and layout of the article.

All these bags are available online but be wary they might be out of stock (because there a HOT ticket),
but I am a keen enforcer of primary shopping, head to the store! There is nothing like seeing the bag in real
life, you can get a feel for the fabric, check all the treats the bag has in stall for you! Also taking a long look in the
mirror with the bag is also encouraged how else will you know if it looks good. BE AWARE of sales consultants
they will try to sell you anything! Stick to your guns about what you know will be comfortable and wearable for
you.
One of many men’s favourite designers is Paul Smith his collections
are easily stated as cool and current. So this bag is made for the regular cool
and current customer, always down to earth, loyal and stable, who works hard.
Smith’s Boston collection. In a sleek grey and black colour scheme,
this epitomizes masculinity with a fashion twist. The placing of the
leather trimmings is unique and eye appealing. Perfect
for the bag man. With two large zip compartments,
shoulder straps, side compartments and interior
pockets what more could we ask from a bag! Its
size is a little shorter then the Gucci bag and you
may have to be a little more conscious in how
much you pack but if you’re a gadget bag man
this is perfect for you with compartments for
everything!!
If you have been following trends in men’s fashion then you
certainly have seen the back pack come back!! This is another victory
item from Burberry. The large cotton canvas backpack is ideal for the
adventurer bag man that needs something hard wearing, durable and
stylish. This man is always looking for the next fun and exciting
experience, think James Bond!
The back pack as all the safety features with the invisible drawcord
and multiple pockets and with the choice of colours you really can
coordinate with your current wardrobe. Perfect for hiking weekends
away or exploring the ancient ruins of European cities. Packing for
the day and the night has been made easy with this backpack.

Still on the Journey...
I think I have demonstrated my endeavour, creativity and skills developed over a number of fashion media. I am never going to stop developing this attributes so I guess I will always be on a journey, there is no final destination, only stops and starts on the way. My final degree project is close to combining many of my showcased work but I hope it is at a higher level. My ambition here is a design based project using art and poetry as the background and inspiration for a womenswear collection. At this stage of the project I am turning my research into a coherant collection that demonstrates the skills I have developed over the last three years.
I took inspiration from Vivienne Westwood’s use of art in her S/S 2013 advertisment. I’ve used Pre- Raphaelite art and poetry not just as the background but brought it into the fashion design, fabric and branding to create a visually stimulating project.
The branding in this project has become a driving force behind the concept. Past, Future, Perfect sums fashion up.
Understanding the past is what makes the present understandable and meaningful and future improvement on the present is the ambition of artists and designers.
The name of my brand, ‘Fallen Magdalens’, was found when I read a book by Jan Marsh on Pre-Raphaelite women. It was a title for a range of paintings done by the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood.
Fallen Magdalen is the representation of the reality of imperfection as part of the human condition but does not deny the possibility of improvement and progress.
