A Collection of my design work

SENIOR THESIS COLLECTION: INSPIRATION“Kizette” is based on the life and work of the most famous Art Deco artist Tamara de Lempicka, and honors her neglected daughter. Many people did not know that Tamara even had a daughter as she was only recognized anonymously as a “young girl” subject in many of her paintings. The collection draws inspiration from the bold, graphic, and linear elements of the Art Deco era and architecture in Miami, FL. It is both functional and decorative; elegant and glamorous. Kizette said of her mother in her biography of Tamara de Lempicka , “she painted them all, the rich, the successful, the renowned-- the best.” Here’s to the best of her subjects, her neglected daughter, Kizette de Lempicka.
TAILORING: “TEDDY GIRL”
The inpiration for this tailored look comes from the 1950’s era, specifically that of the “Teddy Girls.” The teddy girls were young working class women who rejected post-war austerity. Their clothing was simple and more masculine in appearance with close attention to detail.
DANCEWEAR: “A BREATH OF FRESH AIR”
The inspiration for these dancewear pieces comes from the artwork of Edgar Degas. Like his work, the pieces are soft, delicate, elegant, and create a mood that exudes “a breath of fresh air.”
“EARTH MATTERS”: CFDA
The collection is based on the minerals of the earth and formation of rocks. The types of rocks include sedimentary (formed from particles of sand, shells and pebbles), meta-morphic (formed under the surface of the earth from metamorphosis, often having ribbon-like layers and may have tiny crystals), and igneous rocks (formed when magma cools and hardens). Like these rocks, the garments are constructed out of various materials with different luster, drape, feel, and look. The tension between the soft, draped fabrics and the more dense, rigid fabrics are representative of the tensions of the rock and the earth. Materials combined in a simplistic way allow the garments to conform and move with the body, as rocks conform to the earth and its surroundings.
CO-OP WORK:
The next 2 pages contain an embellishment layout that I designed at White House Black Market. The embellishment was adopted in the Spring 2013 line and is now being sold online and in stores. Below is the call out sheets that I created for the embellishment. On the following page are the technical flats and final garment image that is online at WHBM.com.
