Sensory processing disorder

Sensory Processing Disorder is a disorder where your

brain misinterpretes signals from your senses.

It has only recently been studied

and brought to the attention of

the medical community, however

it is a much more widespread

phenomanon than most realise.

SPD commonly occurs in those

with autism although that

is not a neccisary requirement

and is quite common. All 7 of

a persons senses can be

effected by SPD, Visual, Olfactory,

Oral, Auditory, Proprioception,

Vestibular, Tactile

“Being an occupational

therapist for SPD means

adapting to every child and parent differently...

It’s as much about the family as

a whole as the individual. We

are giving them strategy’s

for the real world.”

Elizabeth BrauerCincinnati Childrens Cincainnati Occupational Therapy

“The child always dictates

what you do in each session.

If they say no the we wont

do it. So everything has

to be engaging and interesting, as well as

sensory rich.”

Deborah Whitcomb

It’s all about strategic fun.
