Highlights from the Portfolio

Over 10,000 pounds of schools supplies were reallocated to 120 teachers representing 48 schools on March 23rd.
Hamilton Education Program
Starting last spring, OPSB Staff worked with the Gilder Lehrman Foundation, and members of City government, to coordinate with and recruit High Schools to participate in the Hamilton Education Program, which culminated last Friday, March 29th at the Saenger Theatre.
The program is offered nationwide for High School students taking US History. Each participating class engaged with a specific hands-on unit of study, focused on reviewing primary sources from the time period covered in “Hamilton” and submitted videos of original student performances related to the content, in hopes of performing on stage. 15 New Orleans High Schools participated.
On Friday, March 29th, students joined others from the region to view student performances, engage in a discussion with members of the cast of “Hamilton” and watched a matinee performance of the show. Five of our schools, Edna Karr, The Net, Abramson Sci Academy, Warren Easton and Livingston
had students chosen to perform onstage.2

Student Leader Summit – Saturday, April 6th
Over 50 students joined us this past Saturday for the inaugural Student Leader Summit, presented by the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council (SSAC). It was a great opportunity for the students to network with each other and learn about our system.
According to survey results, the student leaders' favorite activities were engaging with the Board Members and Superintendent Lewis, the Student Hearing Office exercise, and the group discussion on student experiences.

Alternative Programs and Intervention Planning Working Group
The working group of school leaders (representing 25 schools) and OPSB staff have been convening meetings since January with the objectives of:
Identify characteristics of current alternative program students and of students in need of alternative settings or interventions
Articulate a continuum of student supports that should exist to ensure students are able to thrive in their regular school placement
Have a constructive, out-comes focused discussion on how we can make systemic changes to ensure high quality educational settings for all students
The group identified a need to create a solution for 2019-2020 for middle school students who are expelled
