This is a summary of my most representative works as a student and as a young architect. A conceptual display of 16 projects with the purpose of exposing my reflections about the world where we are living from the anthropological, spatial, formal and creative point of view that architecture may provide. The projects are located in a variety of scenarios, examples of the relationship between human beings with ourselves and with our environment and its reciprocal and constant transformation. They talk about the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the contemporary western metropolis (as an alternative to

the urban sprawl); about spaces of high complexity where economic, cultural and bio-environmental dynamics, don’t seem a priori, to achieve a meeting point; about the disappearance of the city limits and the unstoppable domestication of wild nature and landscape colonization. These topics are treated at different scales depending on the project demands, from the dwelling to the building, the city and its hinterland. Hereby I declare willing to reinforce my responsibility and compromise as an architect towards society to build a worthy and comfortable human space and a more sustainable world.

Barcelona Sports Institute is a city coun-cil organism responsible for the mana-gement, upkeep and promotion of the sport buildings and events of Barcelona. Some remarkable events in the city, such as the European Athletics Championship or the last stage of the “Tour de France”, were the reason for the improvement and renewal of their headquarters. The wor-ks and maintenance department of the IBE was in charge of the interior renewal and the supervision of the work as well as the design of some furniture. The offi-ces are part of “Picornell” Olympic Pool

Complex. A two story, sixty meters long, block with a façade towards the east, fa-cing the Olympic Stadium and the other, the west one, is looking towards the in-door Olympic pool. Both levels are simi-larly organized. A central reception lobby divides the building into two parts. One is an open office space with a row of pri-vate bureaus like theatre boxes leaning out to the pool. The other has a restroom core linked to the lobby and protecting the institutional area, with political, ma-nagement and press offices as well as meeting rooms.

Building density and activity mixing tur-

ned this place into one of the smallest,

most transited crossings. When the city

council limited the cars entry, their num-

ber considerably decreased leaving a

street furniture surplus, an invisible palm

and an inadequate pavement. The pur-

pose was to get rid of the obsolete tra-

ffic equipment at the time we provided a

special entity to the space. We used the

fact of the palm to turn it into the symbol

of the crossing.

The granite stone pieces circular arran-

gement makes obvious the presence of

the palm tree and gives the impression

of unique, single and outstanding place.

Street furniture elimination allows the

space to breath. The aim to achieve is to

perceive it as a square more than a sim-

ple crossroad. This is just the first phase

of the project. A public space does not

belong to the collective conscience un-

til it offers a long-term activity in which

users who live there can take part.

There are two overall horizontal systems in the proposal. The rst system is the surface itself, divided by usage strips. The second one are the recuperated medieval paths. The plot and the square shelter three and two uses, respectively. In the south of the plot is placed the activity fringe with a playground and small terrace that today belongs to a small cafe. In both centres there are two sojourn areas that work as a sponge which absorb the tensions produced by façade plains’ distortion. In the north, the strips are connected to the façade activity. In the plot, it totally surrenders to the aqueduct and the new equipment entrance. In the other, it is related to a Thai restaurant.

Every system and every strip have their own pavement. The medieval path is reproduced by a yellow sandy stone. Red asphalt is extended all over the most static areas, while soft pavements such as rubber gravel and granitic sand are used on the playground and on the square centre. The ramp in front of the aqueduct is covered with a wiped out stone called “Montjuic”, very common in historical buildings of the city.

Floor Plan 1/200N

The central district is a high-density area

in which public space and their uses are

very bad distributed. The site consists of

a plot of 750 m2 and a square of 550 m2

linked together by a very narrow street.

Both the plot and the square appeared

after the demolition of two XVIII th cen-

tury residential buildings. This area be-

came a backside of the tourist business

and commercial activity of the city cen-

tre. Particularly, both spaces turned into

a 200-300 motorbikes parking lot.

By the beginning of 2010, the neigh-

bours’ organization began negotiations

with the city council to bring back the

space to the neighbourhood’s everyday

life. They did not want to be the tourists

and global brand shops rubbish bin any

more. The administration promised them

they would have the space back in a year

term. The presence of the roman aque-

duct attracted the attention of the City

History Museum and the Urbanism Cen-

tral Department. (continues in the next page)

They were interested in the archaeo-logical buried remains of the site and the rehabilitation of the aqueduct. The challenge of the project was to give the public space back to citizens, increase the number of playgrounds in the city centre and emphasize the presence of the aqueduct while replacing the bikes of the parking lot. There are two overall horizontal systems in the proposal. The first is the retrieval of the medieval paths. The second is the surface itself, divided into usage stripes. The southern fringe

is the circulation area. In both centres,

a sojourn area domintes the place: in

the western square is a playground and

a small terrace of a café; in the eastern

square is a shaded parterre. They work

as a sponge that absorb the tensions

produced by the façades distortions.

The last stripe is the zone connected to

the activity of the buildings: a space ded-

icated to the aqueduct and the entrance

of the new social facility and a zone relat-

ed to a Thai restaurant.

The project began with a ground floor

plan provided by the clients and the con-

dition of a possible posterior construc-

tion of a mezzanine. Due to administrati-

ve restrictions, we were able to build just

a single-story house. A good control of

the house’s height was necessary to dis-

semble the intentions of the owners. The

challenge was to make the space under

the roof as tall as possible while preten-

ding the house to be as low as we could.

A succession of three different volumes

respond to the different functional divi-

sions of the plan. Inside, spaces of diffe-

rent height are expressed, outside, with

different roof composition. Imperfect

symmetry unifies the volumes keeping

the same façade height in the entire pe-

rimeter. This fact added to a hipped-sha-

ped roof give the impression of a lower

construction. Eventually, the client assu-

med the risk of a gabled roof in order to

gain more for its mezzanine space.

Ruins of Can Salvi

Opened space / closed space sequence, first floor

Just three exterior walls rise up from the original building. They enfold an 80 m2

surface close to a square. Next to the west façade is possible to intuit a small annex. The ruins show the existence of a two-story house with a gabled roof. The rests of the building are located in the «Solà de Badós» neighbourhood, on the sunny slope of a mountain, in a big clearing of a forest reserve. There are more house, some ruined, some resto-red. Can Salvi, together with the other cottages, belongs to the rural landscape and its history.

The proposal is based on the town-plan-ning regulations and the client’s will. He does not want the exact restitution of the building, but he wants to keep the old cottages’ style. The volume leans on the existing walls, without big windows and following the formal criteria of the area’s rural architecture. The day zone is in the ground floor, it conserves the original space, in the exception of the ba-throom and the stairs. The night zone in first floor, it is much more comparted in rooms and an open space that can be closed up too.

Fort Kochi is the most important island (a peninsula indeed) in the harbour of Ernakulam, the ancient delta of the Pe-riyar River. Due to its good climate and strategic position, it has been for centu-ries a global commercial port in which even Roman merchants sailed to buy pepper and sell it in the Empire. Nowa-days all the commercial activity moved to the prosper city of Ernakulam and Fort Kochi remains as an Indian colonial ves-tige for its visitor delight. Spice Harbour was and old Dutch warehouse of Fort Kochi, rehabilitated into a small hotel of

14 rooms + 2 suites. The square-shaped plot has a main road in one side and the sea in its opposite. We can distinguish four different parts: two long blocks by the sides facing each other, a newer buil-ding in blue and a central garden. The bigger block became the room area and the other a restaurant, while the blue buil-ding turned into the staff/logistic core. The old custom court is now a green lawn with a pool opened to the fabulous harbour waterscape in one end and an outdoor lounge/reception protecting it from the street in the other.

Molins de Rei is a small city of 24.800 inhabitants in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. To maintain and protect its architectural heritage, the council of the town ordered an architectural heritage conservation plan. A catalogue that co-llects all the ancient buildings and its singularities of the densified area and its surroundings within the administrati-ve limits of the municipality. It is also a set of regulations and legal mechanisms to improve the architectural and urban heritage protection and ensure a better urban development in the target areas.

This catalogue provides a protection le-vel to a list of buildings and explains faça-de by façade, all the elements to be pre-served, modified or removed in each one of them. During the process, more than 500 buildings where measured, photo-graphed and analysed. Part of the analy-sis consisted in flatting the buildings to 2D in Photoshop, pic by pic and then match them up in more than 20 explica-tive façades, called urban fronts. I directly assisted Carme Bosch Arauz in this pro-ject, architectural heritage specialist and director of the heritage urban plan.

View of the tower from the beach

Calzarello is a leisure and touristic spot on the east coast of Corsica. The buil-ding is isolated but not far away from the main touristic focuses and next to the mouth of the Fium’Orbu River in the middle of an endless sandy beach. This protected environment offers an exceptional and privileged location to carry out activities related with tourism. The preliminary design attempts to give the owners an idea of how to materialize their dreams.

The tower must be an iconic attractor. It gets rid of their annexed volumes and its structure is undressed leaving the tower as it is. The purpose is to let people feel the purity and majesty of the tower while it opens towards its surroundings. The rehabilitation of the slabs and the roofs creates a close-to-open gradient of spa-ces giving the user different possibilities of experience with several degrees of communication with the environment. A new light outdoor stage, next to the tower, completes the gradient sequence.

View of the estructure with cross-laminated timber

The project is composed by three modu-les that search the best orientation de-pending on the activities that they hold. In the ground floor the room’s module turns towards the east, protected by a circulation stripe in the west. The collec-tive zone of the house opens completely towards the south. The last module is a mezzanine that looks to the landscape.

The building structure is made of cross-laminated timber panels. This ma-terial makes walls thinner, that is to say, a higher surface efficiency. The weight of the main structure is reduced nearly to the half, lowing the foundation costs. It also accelerates the construction and makes it smarter.

Green Spots linked to the accessible paths

The project takes place in Girona’s downtown, an old neighbourhood lo-cated between a river and the foot of a mountain. The steep slope completely conditioned the urban landscape, its mobility and accessibility. The urban pro-posal consists of the creation of two big green spots and three accessible paths that begin at the other side of the river and end at the highest points of the old town. The paths play with the void and the full trying to preserve the medieval landscape. This concept is developed

in a derelict theatre. The building shel-

ters a multipurpose cultural facility. The

aim of the project is to extend the pu-

blic communication into the “full” space

achieving a continuous and fluid path

that mechanically connects the streets at

different levels. Moreover, it is supposed

to create a distribution space -void- that

works as an active element capable of

bringing the centre -full- activities into it.

An intervention sequence is followed in

order to reach the goal.

Analogy between the function of a kidney and the function of the lagoon park

The intensive exploitation of the lagoon

and the continuous decrease of the river

flows has entailed the degradation of a

unique habitat, increasing water salinity

and the probability of floods. There are

three main factors to care about: the na-

tural space, its inhabitants and tourists.

The intervention must reduce salinity

to augment the vegetation that stops

the floods while keeping the lagoon as

a commercial and industrial support.

We divided the project into two parts. A

central void that constitutes the urban

park: a natural water treatment plant of

macrophytes, plantation of robinia pseu-

do-acacias and the recovery of the Sac-

ca as ancient terrain of fruit cultivation of

the lagoon. And a ”full” proposal which

consists of a coastal membrane that ma-

nages the processes depending on their

intensity: an ecopark that works as distri-

butor and separator of waste, a harbour,

a show room pavilion, a natural museum

and new dwellings.

The bed of macrophytes slows down the water flow, helps the settling of suspen-ded solids and keeps the water partially oxygenated. Their stems provide support for bacteriological cultures, the main element for natural water purification. These plants also hold the sea tide and help towns to prevent floods.

3D Model of the proposal

The project is developed in a ruined

sanctuary. It is located at 1500 meters

high next to a ravine followed by a plain.

The high presence of vultures and len-

ticular clouds in sunny days reveal the

existence of hot rising air currents. The

orography and the weather conditions

make the place ideal for hang gliding

and paragliding. The plan is to rehabi-

litate the ruins not only in meanings of

construction but also recover the sanc-

tuary as a place of our times.

The concept consists in an integrator

element that provides reinforcement to

the sanctuary’s walls and the base struc-

ture for the new uses. The base structure

is an expanded steel platform that regu-

larizes the ground letting the place to be

visited, giving continuity to the GR paths

and creating gliding springboards. The

mountain refuge is totally integrated with

the sanctuary, constructed on the foun-

dations of the hermit’s old house.

The building had to fit in a volume of

36 x 12 x 36 m. The dwellings were su-

pposed to have a surface around 30 m2

and there should be as much dwellings

as possible. In order to follow those sta-

tements was mandatory to organize the

building in just one staircase and exter-

nal corridors. The dwellings are 3,4 m

wide, 9,5 m long and 3,8 m tall and north

– south orientated, the best orientation

possible in Catalonia. The private cells in-

clude a light and closed structure where

the wet spaces, the storage and a slee-

ping room are set up. This way, the cell

is divided into three parts. The entrance

is the most public and collective space.

The second is this light element, temple

of privacy. The third is a more private

but collective space. The light structure

distributes, multiplies and defines the

spaces; the project achieves a compact

dwelling without rejecting privacy and

without refusing comfortable and wide

rooms.

We considered this simplest structure a Fractal: an element that could be repeated infinite times to create bigger structures with the same properties.

In 2009 the subject of the festival was collapse, in all levels: economic, ecological and social.

Example image for the preselection phase

“Xarxa Delicada” -Delicate network- passed the selection to be exhibited at the CCCB museum. The installation plays with shape to express collapse. It consists of a closed and stable structure of lineal elements made with wooden sticks that represents reality. The sim-plest structure that obeys these con-ditions was an element formed by four segments that crossed one with the other, at least, three times. We repre-sented two types of nets. The first one is more extensive and flat. Shapes share

their elements to generate the net. This kind of net attempts to represent how oriental societies and philosophies work. Oriental society and its dynamics have much more collective spirit than others. The second net is compact and cloud-shaped. It has a more hierarchal struc-ture where elements work one after the other, but not together. They don’t share the content but the container. This kind of net is like occidental societies, they tend to create more egoist, selfish and individualist dynamics.

I hate the keyboard was a team of three members, Hugo Pibernat and Joan Martin as software implementers and me as graphic designer. The aim of the team was to design, implement and release Yksi, an Iphone app. Yksi consists in a social media app to take pictures and share them with others. It is a new way of enjoying a conversation without words but photographs. I hate the keyboard made an app to make people able to talk without typing a single letter. The event sequence in the program takes place as follows:

Yksi was released on the AppStore in autumn 2011 and was working during a whole year with more than 50 registered users, while all the information could be hosted in a server of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. After the final thesis defence of Hugo Pibernat, the server was no longer accessible and the experiment concluded.

(1) Take the first picture to sign up (your id will be a picture so you do not need to type down your name)

(2) Take a picture and save it into your personal gallery, this picture will enlarge the Yksi database.

(3) Check your feed to know what is the other people taking pictures to and perhaps rate them with a star.

The Yksi algorithm automatically will show you pictures based on pictures you stared, received or sent.

(4) Check your mailbox to know if somebody sent you a picture as an answer to a photo you sent----------

Impressora RepRap BCN3DR

Bust of myself - Polylactic acid (PLA) Duck - Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene

Printing sequences with a RerRap BCN3DR and a MaketBot Repliactor2.

Just a few years ago, mainly thanks to the open-source RepRap project, stereo-lithography stepped out from laser based 3D printing farms and high-standard design industry into fab@home technology. This paradigm shift make additive manufacturing nearly accessible to every small and medium-sized business. This technology opens an entirely new bunch of complex and more organic shapes, once bounded to the highest budgets, to all the design industry. In less than a morning, an architect can print its building to discuss

it with their teammates or the client.Everyone can print at home a .stl file that s/he bought and downloaded from a website of a freelance designer. I -a person who is able to develop digital models in a CAD or BIM platform- was completely seduced by this new type of machines. There are two main ways of creating a .stl file. Directly scan an existing corpus with a 3D scanner or exporting it from a built model in a computer. This page does not show a project itself, but my first steps into 3D printing.

I had the chance of printing a bust of myself after being scanned by a Kinect 3D scanner. I also drew a quick model of duck with Rhinoceros (CAD software that quickly adapted to .stl technology) and I learned how to print it out. On

the footer, you can see the model of a

mountain in the Pyrenees, printed with

a RepRap. It was part of a friend’s final

thesis about an urban plan study case of

technification of rural areas.
