A retreat in Karuizawa is located in the middle of a deep woods in Nagano prefecture.
The request from the client is to design a hut that could be used as a peaceful resting space for the visitors who visit the
wild f lower garden that she has been working on in collaboration with a landscape architect for years.
The client is a painter who has been painting the wild f lowers of Nagano for decades. The act of maintaining and invit ing
visitors into the garden is her way of showing her sense of gratitude towards the plants.

02 _ Y HOUSE
Y House is planned for a couple and three children in Kamakura that is one of old towns in Japan having residential neigh-
borhood and green. We proposed bundles of columns not only to support the structure but also to make the continuity of
the environment that is row of trees and shrubbery. The diagonal columns are tied together at the bottom and connecting
the base plate with the grid of the roof structure. On the ground level, these columns appear as trunks of trees making
the space open and one continuum with the garden. On the other hand, on the first level, they become dispersed and
one may feel surrounded by branches of threes where family stuff l ike books, clothes and miscellaneous things fulf i l l and
separate space loosely.Pursuing architecture as the continuum of the environment, the diagonal columns characterize the
difference between ground level and first level that was treated as homogeneous space in modern frame.

03 _ INFORMAL PRINCIPLE
By reinterpreting vernacular forms in Tokyo through careful observation of the city, we introduced informal situation in this housing
complex. Small volumes of housing units, uncouthly attached balconies, additional roof structures on the rooftops and tiny storage
spaces between exterior walls and fences are typical informal expansion of houses in residential area. These elements make the inte-
rior private space expanded to outside space or private space and achieve the situation where dwellers’ activit ies form the cityscape.

“IN GOD WE TRUST.” This phrase is written on one-dollar bil ls and well showing the signif icance of trust in rel igion and
finance. Their legit imacy is kept f irm as long as people trust them.
In these days, f inancial agencies seem to be losing their trust and have become one of infamous business. In order to
get trust back into their hands and rehabil itate their reputation, they need a new plan that should be executed by the way
of showing their trustworthiness.
When people trust something or someone, they believe in its rel iabil ity, truth or abil ity without clear evidence. This
means their trustworthiness can not be proven and only created through relationship.
Religious fraternit ies uti l ize mutual relationship that a rel igion and people rely on each other as means to show their
trustworthiness. They provide something necessary for people and get funds, lands or working force in return. This reci-
procity make the rel igious commugreliable infrastructure for people. Thorough this process, people come to trust them.
This process can be applied to f inancial agencies. In this case, they build a bridge passing through Wall Street in Man-
hattan providing a connection between JFK, Brooklyn, New York, Jersey City and EWR. It works as a necessary infra-
structure for people and make them dependent on the financial company. In return, they obtain an exclusive right to use
the space over Wall Street where the land value is extremely high. This bridge becomes a financial building at the same
time. In addition, the land value along this bridge goes higher because of the connection and becomes a target of new
investment. This bridge also can contribute to the development of the city.

Flower Garden
Forst is a post-industrial city positioned in Lausitz, eastern Germany. Widely known for its blooming texti le

city entering a process of declination. In the autumn semester 2011, Studio Tom Emerson at EHTZ init iated a
research project on the city of Forst. Our research was based on the strategy to f ind out elements which make
contrast between what is cult ivated and abandoned, in other words, artifact and nature.
Re-naturing of the former industrial site
We saw Forst as a mortal process of the city and decided to intervene in the process of death itself by implementing vast
public park in the middle of the city. It would be composed of abandoned monumental buildings and wildness achieved
by acceleration an cultivation of nature growth through several decades.
As a f irst step, we had to define the borders of the park. By estimating the yearly growth of the vegetation sprouting from
the abandoned spaces, we concluded that in 60 years the ruderal vegetation wil l have overgrown the city and achieved
the defined borders. Private grounds serve as an additional borderl ine.
We chose buildings of monumental quality to be included in the park, namely two churches and six abandoned texti le
factories. These are dispersed in the park and create an archipelago of public spaces in the wilderness. The second step
was to make this large area accessible to the public and to connect the ruined city with the city’s reality, by using on one
hand the existing grid, and on the other hand by creating new paths to interconnect the monuments.

Duration _ 3 months
Program _ Housing complex
Location _ Tokyo, Japan
This is new housing complex project for people who are l iving in Nishiazabu district in Tokyo for a long time. I made a
research on Tokyo in the first place. On the map of the center of Tokyo, I drew circles defined by radius with 800m (10
minutes on foot) and centers on train stations and subway stations. Then, I could f ind spots where are not covered by
these area. I named these spots “Urban Pocket” as hidden Tokyo, and found a small community composed of old houses
built in the beginning of 20th century. This “vi l lage” was supposed to be demolished and there was a construction plan of
new apartment building. For people l iving there, I decided to design a new structure which could work as a frame of this
community and an infrastructure connecting two places isolated by the cliff here.

Duration _ 3 months
Program _ Private house
Location _ Tokyo, Japan
Site plan
This is private housing project in Tokyo. The client had 3 different hobbies and needed three different rooms for each
other as Tea Ceremony Room, Atelier and Study Room. Because the site had difference in its height as 1.2m - 2.5m to
the street, I proposed burying concrete volumes of l iving area and putting glass volumes of hobby rooms on it. The buried
volume can keep the privacy and has a shape l ike street which create the connection to the city context. Glass rooms
can introduce l ight and air into underground spaces.

Kai Tak Airport is located on the north side of Kowloon Bay in Kowloon, Hong Kong. Kai Tak Runway, an elongated bay area,
is an especial ly unique site in the airport; the length is approximately 2.5km and the width is roughly 250m. This project is an
inner-city urban resort plan for the redevelopment of Kai Tak Runway.
The project emphasizes the tense relation between city and commercial complex. As the commercial complex takes on om-
nipotence and becomes an independent functional city, the surrounding city gets weak and spineless, and the city and the com-
mercial complex split. All that remains of the city is green spaces and streets with al l the business diminished.
Green spaces are signif icant components in the project. The complex is designed around a ria of green space, separating its
functions and maximizing the green space. Pedestrians can easily walk through the green space to access all the amenities.
Each complex block is large and iconic, having its own unique theme that giving visitors varied experience. The site is easily
accessed by foot, car, and ship.

Features of buildings in Akihabara, a district in Tokyo famous for Otaku culture, concentrate on their facades. The facades of
such buildings are covered with ads and have few windows, bringing forth the image of private, individualized spaces. Such com-

to the city fabric. In contrast to the facades of Akihabara, those of Shibuya, another famous district of Tokyo, are covered with

15 _ TRUSS MOUNTAIN BRIDGE
2006 _ Studio Tom Emerson ETH Zürich

Duration _ 1 month

Result _ 1st prize at Wooden Pedestrian Bridge Design Competit ion
We were required to make a wooden pedestrian bridge on one of the largest intersec-
tions in Kyoto. We adopted a truss structure and put the peaks of the truss beams on
the l ines that connect the center of the site and the tops of the mountains surrounding
Kyoto. The triangle shapes of the truss represent the figures of mountains and Japa-
nese traditional roofs. By seeing these trusses, people wil l be able to f ind the existence
of mountains, which are an important factor of the culture in Kyoto, and which have
now been hidden by the surrounding buildings. There are no mountains to the north
of the site, and accordingly, the bridge has no peaks in that direction. This part of this
bridge has the role of a gate for visitors from Osaka. The winding pedestrian is char-
acterized by the plan of Katsura Detached Palace. This project is a trial to rediscover
the culture of Kyoto.
