Kingsford Residence
New Build Residential Home and Garden
33 Wallace Street, Kingsford, NSW, Australia
Designed in partnership with Noek DesignOriginal budget $775,000 AUD
A new home in one of Sydney’s southern suburbs, this project had a total build cost of around $775,000. This detached three bedroom, three bathroom property was adapted from an existing company-held design, that had been constructed previously in another Sydney suburb. This client, having viewed the existing property, requested an identical copy to be built in their preferred suburb, with the addition of several unique features such as the first floor roof garden, the Balinese spa-inspired master en-suite and the family swimming pool, which was designed to custom fit the contours of this particular site.

This new, three story home and garden was built in the Sydney suburb of Gladesville, with a budget of $2 million. The simple render of the external facades was designed to place emphasis on the natural diversity of the surrounding bushland and the newly planted garden.

With the temperate Australian climate, providing great pportunitites for natural ventilation and lighting, this four bedroom property was designed with the maximum amount of glazing to the West and North facades, which also frames the native bushland and water views. Open glazing was kept to a minimum on the East and South facades, to maintain privacy and low noise levels due to the proximity of the neighbouring residences and a relatively busy access road. Instead, obscured louvre windows were used to provide adequate cross ventilation and daylight.

The structural design for this project was inherited from the client’s previous architect. Planning permission for the dwelling had already been approved by the local councill, so we were enlisted by the client to make the required changes to the design, without creating the need for additional council approval for major changes to the submitted plans and reports. This meant that our work was mainly confi ned to the internal walls and fi nishes., and through changing these we could still have a collossal effect on the fi nal built product.
With a budget of $7000 per m2, we were able to give the client an excellent quality of materials and fi nishes. The clients choice of custom joinery and designer furniture , harmonised well with our chosen limited palette of American Oak surfaces, stainless steel accents and hidden fi xings. Other fi nishes included large Travertine fl oor tiles and solid oak fl oorboards, which were carried through to the garden as pool coping, paving and decking materials.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN
The client’s brief highlighted the need for a basement with wine cellar and storage spaces that could be later converted to living spaces should their family’s needs change. Access to the outdoors was also paramount for the family, as was the requirement for a family swimming pool. This swimming pool became a particular focal point for the garden, as the sloping lawn provided a great opportunity for using infi nity-style pool construction.
The rear garden was divided into a series of unique entertaining areas, which could be used for a range of outdoor activites by all the family. Each area was framed by bright, architectural planting and incorparated invisile glass fencing to maintain family pool safety. To fully maximise the impact of the garden within the home, most rooms use large windows to bring the colour and vibrance of the new pool and planting into the house as a focal point.

SECOND FLOOR PLAN
The project involved the provision of alterations and additions to the value of $200,000 to a two storey dwelling in the quiet Sydney suburb of Birchgrove. This involved the redesigning of the fi rst fl oor into a resort-style open plan bedroom, bathroom, en-suite, offi ce and walk in wardrobe for a couple whose children had left home and who now wanted to better use the available space.
We took a holistic involvement in the project, from the initial concept design through to fi nal construction. Creating an appropriate drawing package to show the unusual roof arrangement and working with existing building plans to rearrange the internal layout into several options to show the clients, we also needed to provide several, tailored, industry-specifi c sets of drawings to be issued to the corresponding trades people. This included joinery plans and sections for the carpenter, lighting plans for the electrician and white goods/service plans for the plumber, in addition to plans, sections and elevations for the main construction contractor.
The unique roof shape in the master suite led to some great new spaces, where we could maximise the angled, previously unused areas as custom storage and working space. We recieved some really positive feedback from this client, and after completing this initial stage, they went on to commission us for a similar refurbishment of the ground fl oor also.

South KilaraResidential Garden
New Build Residential Garden and Pool
47 Arnold Street, South Kilara, NSW, Australia
Designed in partnership with Good Manors Original budget of $550,000 AUD
14
This family garden in the Sydney North Shore suburb of Kilara was completed in December 2011, right in time for the clients to enjoy the Australian summer weather. The redesign included a pool, spa, cabana, lawn and planted garden. The entire project from design through all aspects of construction were completed by the skilled team at Good Manors. The garden was designed to provide an instant impact, whilst the planting design allows the garden to transform and get better over time, as the plants mature and become established in the years ahead.

LANDSCAPE PLAN
The exsting garden at Kilara was well-kept but the pool and patio areas were dated and damaged and much of the planting was overly mature and in need of replacing. It was decided that the existing impractical pool would be fi lled and relocated with the addition of a large spa. The purpose of this was to open visual and physical access to the garden from the home and create new outdoor entertaining areas. The simple palette of pale stone and natural wood used in the patio and cabana areas contrasted well with the strong marine blue of the pool tiles and the evergreen of the new planting.

Glastonbury Festival PodUpcycled Temporary Living
This temporary structure was designed to house festival-goers to the 2010 Glastonbury festival. Made using decomissioned industrial pallets, this single storey, 3m2 wooden cube had a raised sleeping platform and storage space below for all camping equipment and supplies. It was unnecessary to provide social space or a kitchen, due to the abundance of existing on-site provisions.
The visual on the right page shows a later extension to the project, where the temporary pod was developped into some potential cheap flat-packed living space for students in cities where there is a shortage of suitable housing.

New Public Park and Outdoor Activity Centre
Tempelhof Airfield, Berlin, Germany
Designed in partnership with TOPOS Original budget €60,000,000 EURO
Redevelopment of this former international airfield in Berlin began in 2009, creating a new 2.3 km2 public park just south of the CBD. Located in a heavily residential area, with excellent existing transport links, this park was designed in cooperation with Grun Berlin, a local goverment body who will be responsible for the ongoing management of the site.
This new sports and recreation venue consists of a series of playing fields and sport-specific areas which divide this large site into a set of smaller interlinked spaces, which the public can easily percieve and explore. The proposal also takes into consideration the existing biodiversity and nature conservation of the abandoned airfield, and is designed to accommodate the ongoing restoration of the existing terminal building into a modern exhibition and cultural venue.

Frankfurt UniversityFeature Pocket ParkWorking with the architects Ferdinand Heide and Hesse Construction, the project for the redevelopment of the 50 km2 was completed in stages. The protected land around the listed 1920s IG Farben Building and the Casino in the south a will be part of a later stage. Firstly, a series of small ‘Pocket Parks’ was created, positioned throughout the campus to link up with the existing Green Castle Park. The pocket parks will be used by the students as short term meeting and social interaction spaces, during free time and lunch breaks. As shown below, these grassy, open spaces contain plenty of shaded seating and are edged with densely planted, colourful borders which block out the noise of the surrounding campus streets.
