Welcome to the July 2010 edition of Positive Interest.

We can’t believe that we’re already over half way through our 21st birthday year. We are so grateful to everyone who has wished us well at events. Amongst those extending their congratulations was Edinburgh’s Lord Provost, the Right Honourable George Grubb. See the photos on page 3.

It’s going to be another busy August for Waverley Care’s Fundraising Team during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as they raise money to support our work with people living with HIV and Hepatitis C in Scotland. With bucketshaking and events galore – check out what is happening in the fundraising diary on page 9.

If you’re interested in learning more about World Hepatitis Day and Hepatitis C treatment then turn to pages 4 and 5 where we update you about this relatively new aspect of our work.

Why did you become a patron of Waverley Care?You asked to do a collection at The Pleasance. We came to see the Solas support centre in action and adopted Waverley Care as our main charity and we looked for ways to be more supportive. Out of this came the annual Tartan Ribbon Comedy Benefit at the Pleasance Theatre Festival as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

What is your most memorable moment about working with Waverley Care?Each year the sight of Waverley Care buckets at every theatre exit and coins and notes tumbling into them. The enthusiasm of the collectors and the smiling willingness of the contributors.

What is your favourite food and drink?Guinness and red wine – well Max Wall called Guinness a food.

Name three things you want to do before you die.Not be a nuisance to anyone, see all my friends again and again and win a Fringe First! Well, one must dream!!

What is your favourite place in the world?Edinburgh in August and particularly as the evening sun hits the Pleasance Courtyard.

Who inspires you?Dave Bennington and his father before him who used to deliver milk each and every day in Rutland, whatever the weather and whatever the circumstances ....and all those of their ilk!

Former Director of the Pleasance Theatre Trust Christopher Richardson has been a Waverley Care Patron since 1997. Christopher kindly sat down for a few minutes to answer some of our questions.

Volunteering

Green FingersIt might not be the Beechgrove Garden but Waverley Care staff, service users and volunteers are very fond of our wee allotment.

Volunteers Amy Sulton and Katherine Kemp are regularly down at the plot pulling out weeds and tending to the vegetables that are grown there. They are both available each week to help service users reap the benefits of the outdoor space and were recently acknowledged for their efforts with an Inspiring Volunteering award from the Volunteer Centre Edinburgh.

As well as getting fresh air and physical exercise, working on the allotment gives service users a sense of purpose and achievement when they see the fruits of their labour. It can be a real boost to damaged self-esteem.

During the summer months the allotment is visited by the children and young people’s groups who often enjoy a barbeque in the outdoor space.

As well as individual volunteers, teams also use their green fingers to get involved at Waverley Care. A team of volunteers from Lloyds Banking Group recently spent a day helping out at both the allotment and in the gardens of our respite unit,

Milestone. Although not great weather, the team made a real difference and we’re very grateful for their efforts.

As part of the Scottish Government’s three-year Hepatitis C Action Plan more people are being encouraged to come forward for testing and, if positive, start treatment. 25% of people infected with Hepatitis C clear the virus naturally without any treatment but the recent developments in medication give hope of a life clear of Hep C to the remaining 75%.

Medication has a 50-80% effectiveness, depending on the strain of the Hep C virus being treated. The treatment lasts for between 24 and 48 weeks and takes the form of a weekly injection and daily tablets. Everyone reacts differently to the drugs. Some people have been known to get lots of side

Hepatitis C Treatmentseffects and others hardly any. Common side effects include depression, tiredness, insomnia, breathlessness, nausea, flu-like symptoms, anaemia and hair loss.

Accessing support can really help with the mental and physical effects of treatment. Waverley Care’s services include a specialist Hepatitis C Buddy Service and Positive Self Management Programme (a project educating people on practical, everyday skills to manage physical and emotional health). The services are on hand to support individuals through their treatment and out the other side, hopefully free from the Hep C virus.

World Hepatitis DayWednesday 19th May was World Hepatitis Day. The World Hepatitis Alliance, together with The Hepatitis C Trust and five NHS boards, organised a week of events around Scotland to highlight the day and Waverley Care was involved in planning the events in Edinburgh.

The aim of the events was to raise awareness of Hepatitis C and carry the World Hepatitis Alliance messages to local communities. Messages were focused on preventing new infections and delivering health improvements to people living with Hepatitis. Their campaign ‘Am I number 12?’ is designed to communicate that 1 in 12 people worldwide are living with Hepatitis B or C and to encourage testing.

Nursing staff and people living with Hepatitis C were available on the day, alongside Waverley Care’s Hep C Buddy Co-ordinator, Annette Wilson, to share their knowledge and experiences.

“The day was deemed to be a great success with a real feeling of achievement” commented Annette.

“This was particularly felt by those living with the virus who were empowered to share their experiences and felt supported enough to take part in the day.”

Milestone Funding CutsIn our February edition of Positive Interest we told you about The City of Edinburgh Council’s proposals to potentially reduce funding to our respite unit, Milestone.

Things have now moved forward and, in April, the Council informed us that funding towards Milestone would be cut in the current financial year (2010/11) by £108,000. This is a major reduction in funding (20%) and will therefore unfortunately affect our ability to run services in the way we have traditionally been able to.

Senior Waverley Care staff are working with colleagues in the respite unit to develop new models of care that can be delivered within the new funding constraints. We are confident that we will be able to continue offering care and support the most vulnerable of those living with HIV.

Service users are being kept informed on a regular basis of the proposed changes which, it is anticipated, will begin from 1st September 2010.

Focus on: Arts Project

Work with creative arts happens in most of our support groups and services. It provides service users with a means of expressing emotions they find difficult to otherwise talk about and helps develop self-confidence.

For many years, art work has been instrumental in helping those using Waverley Care’s services. It has assisted people in coming to terms with a diagnosis or coping with the loss of a family member, whilst for others it has been the means of meeting and talking with others over a shared arts task.

Amongst the services that use the arts regularly is our Children and Families project. ‘The Wizard of Oz’ was the focus of a recent drama workshop for the Easter playscheme. The children made their own costumes and rehearsed and performed a few scenes for Waverley Care staff. The aim of this session was to grow the children’s self-confidence, whilst other workshops focus on more specific issues such as anger management. Anger can be a problem for many of the children who come from backgrounds where family breakdown and parental drug use compound the issue of HIV.

The women’s group, ISIS, also features the arts heavily as part of its work. The women have produced a number of textile banners that provide a common task over which to offer one another peer support and explore the many issues that affect them, including stigma and discrimination and social isolation.

The Jenkins family’s storyThe Jenkins children lost their father a number of years ago to AIDS and their mother recently died as a result of an HIV related illness. Her death was sudden and unexpected and meant that the children had a difficult time coming to terms with their grief and their new family situation of being cared for by their aunt.

Waverley Care, having worked with the family for a number of years, arranged for them to come together for one day a week to work with a textile worker. Each child created a textile square to be put together with those of their siblings to create a quilt. They chose to include colours and items that reminded them of their mum and also, as the project moved on, of their dad.

With the quilt as the focus of the workshop, it meant that there was no pressure on the children to talk. They felt more relaxed and comfortable enough to discuss their mum and their feelings about life without her. The sessions helped them to grieve together and, as there was a facilitator present, this meant they were without the conflict that the family often experienced.

The Arts Project made a real difference by helping the family feel closer to one other and enabling them to create something to help keep their mum’s memory alive.

Leith!’, our musical theatre event at Pilrig St Paul’s church, held as part of the Leith Festival. Leith Walk was definitely alive to the sound of music!

Mildred Zimunya is Waverley Care’s African Health Project Worker in Glasgow.

Mildred’s work includes providing support to individuals and families living with HIV and raising awareness of the virus and encouraging testing amongst the African community in Glasgow.

Why did you choose to work for Waverley Care? I had worked in the healthcare sector before and Waverley Care just presented the perfect opportunity that I was looking for. It offered me the challenge to put my public health background experience into developing a project that would fill a gap in African Health Services in Scotland.

What message would you give a young person about HIV? I would say to them: “You are tomorrow’s generation and tomorrow’s hope. But today you live surrounded by an epidemic – HIV/ AIDS. Young people have the highest rates of sexually transmitted infection

worldwide so it is important to get information about HIV, read about it, and get involved in activities around you...Why? Because you can make an impact and you can be the lasting change for an HIV-free adult generation to come, by fighting the stigma and prejudices that surround the HIV/AIDS pandemic.”

Is there anything that frustrates you about your job? Not being able to offer continued/linked support for HIV positive people who are being deported or returning to Africa, where treatment options are limited or next to none.

When not working, what do you spend your time doing? I catch up with family and friends abroad over the phone and net and at weekends I’m out and about with my family. I’m also involved with two churches in my local community area in Paisley.

What is your favourite food and drink? Sadza [cooked cornmeal] and roast chicken with green vegetables made the Zimbabwean way. Appletiser is the drink for me.

What was the last arts event you attended? Cinema – ‘The Tooth Fairy’ movie – very funny.

Fundraising Round-upIt has been a busy time for sponsored events recently with adventurous and active supporters raising funds for Waverley Care.

Thank you and a huge well done to Dougal Hawkshaw who raised over £450 in the Chris Hoy Half Marathon, Chrisie Borg who raised almost £200 in the Edinburgh Half Marathon and Gerard Hall for raising £140 as part of Walk for Scotland.

Our two relay teams in the Edinburgh Marathon braved the scorching heat to complete the 26.2 mile course and raise much needed funds. Relay regulars the Motley Crew took part in the relay for the third year and raised just over £2000, whilst Adrian Jenkins and his Team raised over £800. Thanks to both teams for their fantastic achievements.

Nine daring supporters took part in the Forth Rail Abseil in June and raised over £1600 between them. Congratulations to courageous participants Carolyn Hood, Jayne Mackay, Annemarie Marko, Dave McGregor, Allison Murphy, Rona Nussey, Joey Olsson, Susan Peck and Chair of Waverley Care Trustees, Tom Wood.

Mozart Requiem

Michael Bawtree, Musical Director of Glasgow Chamber Choir and Edinburgh Royal Choral Union, conducted a choir of almost 200 in a performance of Mozart’s Requiem at St Mary’s Cathedral in Glasgow in March.

Thank you to all those who took part as singers, to our soloists, accompanist and volunteers. Over £2000 was raised from the event.

Topping & Butch

Award winning comedy duo Topping & Butch took to the stage for Waverley Care in February for a special Valentine’s Night performance.

Accompanied by special guests Maria Tecce and Katrina, ex-Katrina and the Waves, everyone was on their feet at the end of the night singing at the top of their voices to Katrina’s ‘Walking on Sunshine’. Ernie Chalmers – In MemoriamWe would like to pay tribute to our colleague Ernie Chalmers who sadly passed away unexpectedly in May. Ernie worked at our respite unit, Milestone, since it first opened as a hospice in 1991.

Originally a night porter, Ernie became a much loved support worker in 1994. He met his wife Hazel whilst at Milestone and together they became a core part of life in the unit. Our thoughts are with Hazel at this very sad time.
