As we transition out of summer into the fall season, I hope you all have enjoyed some time out doors in our neck of the woods. My recent annual trip whitewater rafting on the Indian and Hudson Rivers was awesome this year. Despite a dryish summer, the dam release from Lake Abenaki was more than good. We attempted to surf some of the rapids (turn around and paddle hard up the rapids with the hope of getting stuck in a sweet spot in the cascade) on the first large rapid we got caught in rushing water

for at least five minutes before another raft collided with us and pushed us down the river. The other raft lost a passenger who was quickly picked up. The 17 mile trip is amazing. Ravens soar above the Hudson River Gorge. Beautiful blue dragon flies stopped to rest on the raft and sometimes your hand. Horse flies can be a problem, but this year we did not see a one. The day was cool, but the river was warm and a good time was had by all.

We also enjoyed a recent hike to Poke-O on a sunny warm day with ADK members and others. It is one of the innumerable great hikes in the Adirondacks. The trip is reason-ably short, but enough to get your heart pumping, especially if you choose the shorter steeper route.

Please come to our meetings and enjoy an entertaining presentation, prior to it, arranged by our Vice-Chair, Alix Heuston.

Get out there and enjoy the upcoming season, and as always, check our newsletter and Town of Plattsburgh website for more exciting outings.

See you in the great outdoors!

Fourth Grade Outing to Heart Lake By Nancy Olsen and Marilyn Smith

On Thursday, June 16, we met the Keeseville Elemen-tary fourth grade classes

at ADK Loj for their introduction to the ADK Three Seasons at Heart Lake program. Previously we had presented a proposal to participate in this unique ADK fourth grade experience to the fourth grade teachers at Momot Elementary School in Plattsburgh. They are now in their third year of participation.

This introduction to walking in nature with the ADK is a wonderful experience for the students as well as their teachers. There were four classes which were divided into groups of 10 with an ADK staff member plus a teacher and sometimes a parent. Each group hiked one of the Loj trails and explored their surroundings with a staff member who posed questions designed to make the students really look at where they were and what they were seeing. The students were also encouraged to ask questions and they were often quite perceptive. Since children are closer to the ground they see more than adults do. One child found a Spring Peeper (frog), a first view of one for us. We had lunch by Heart Lake and did a partner trust activity after lunch.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their experience. Next year thanks to our Algonquin Chapter community outreach introduction, the new fourth graders will visit Heart Lake for all 3 seasons: Fall, Winter and Spring.
