INSTALLATION

INFRASTRUCTURE

The PowerPro Manager Service looks to register with the PowerPro Manager Console, and is hard coded to search for a computer named “powerpro”. To facilitate this registration, create a DNS record (either A or CNAME) named powerpro that points to the PowerPro Manager Console computer.

POWERPRO NAME RESOLUTION

A key element to centrally managing your PowerPro Manager workstations is providing name resolution to them. When the PowerPro Manager workstation service starts, it attempts to contact the console using the name “powerpro”. When it resolves the name and connects to the console, it updates its configuration.

7 | P a g e

Page 8: PowerPro Manager - exceleratesoftware.comexceleratesoftware.com/.../2015/11/PowerPro-Configurat…  · Web view9050-9051:tcp inbound from clients. Communications Diagram. Installation

XVR Software PowerPro Manager

DNSPerhaps the easiest method to provide name resolution is to create a record in your DNS server. You have two options.

The first option is to create a CNAME or alias to the console computer. If you are using Microsoft DNS server, right-click on the zone in which the workstation resides. Select New Alias (CNAME)… . From the window that appears, navigate through your server, forward lookup zones, zones and records until you ultimately select the server where the PowerPro Manager Console is installed. Give the entry an alias name of powerpro.

The second option is to create a Host or A record for powerpro. When creating the new Host record, specify the name powerpro and the IP address of the computer where the Powerpro Manager Console is installed.

ISC Bind and other DNS implementers should consult their documentation for guidance on creating CNAME and A records.

HOSTS FILEFor small implementations or tests, you may opt to configure the individual workstations to resolve powerpro directly. On supported Windows based computers, navigate to and edit the file the hosts file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts. On supported Macintosh computers, use the Terminal and administrative privileges to edit the file /private/etc/hosts.

Add a line specifying the IP address of the PowerPro Console computer, similar to the following example (Note that the IP address and “powerpro” are separated by a tab):

10.1.4.20 powerpro

TESTOnce you have your name resolution changes in place, test by pinging “powerpro” from the workstation. You should see the IP address resolved and a response.

C:\> ping powerproPinging powerpro.XVRsoftware.com [10.1.4.20] with 32 bytes of data:Reply from 10.1.4.20: bytes=32 time=4ms TTL=128Reply from 10.1.4.20: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128Reply from 10.1.4.20: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=128Reply from 10.1.4.20: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=128Ping statistics for 10.1.4.20: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

WAKE ON LAN

PowerPro Manager provides WoL features to start compliant computers at scheduled times or manually. Use the Wake On Lan Scheduler to specify when to send the “magic packet” to particular groups.

WoL technology depends on broadcast traffic, which is limited to the local subnet. When enabling WOL technology for a network, you will be prompted to specify a WOL Proxy or allow PowerPro Manager define one automatically.

Click the OK button at the prompt to allow PowerPro Manager automatically assign a WOL Proxy. Pressing Cancel will allow you to select a Primary and optional Secondary proxy.

You may manually specify a proxy by right-clicking the workstation from the list and selecting the Mode. Available Modes are:

Primary – this workstation will be contacted to send the WOL packet.Secondary – this workstation will be contacted in case the Primary is unavailableReset Proxy Mode – unsets the proxy configuration on this workstation.

Modes are identified as:

N – No Proxy configurationA – Automatically assigned as a ProxyP – Statically assigned as PrimaryS – Statically assigned as Secondary

If WOL is enabled for a subnet and no proxies can be found when a WOL action is set to occur, then PowerPro Manager will elect a running workstation to proxy the WOL packet.

APPENDIX A – ACTIVE DIRECTORY GPO BASED DEPLOYMENT

Active Directory can be utilized to deploy the PowerPro client to domain member computers. Use the following steps as a guideline.

Active Directory GPO Based software installs have known issues with mixed deployments. If you opt to deploy machines using group policies, you must upgrade or uninstall with group policies. You must not manually install or uninstall PowerPro on the GPO deployed installation. In case of partial installations, utilize the Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (MS Article 290301) to remove the orphaned components.

Example Configuration Environment

Our example environment consists of the domain greenco.com and its computers:

Create a deployment share for the PowerPro client .msi file. This location must be accessible from all client computers to be deployed to. The client computers need read access to the software.

Example Configuration Steps

On the file server, create the folder, assign permissions and share it.

c:cd \md powerproicacls powerpro /inheritance:disableicacls powerpro /g:r builtin\administrators:F /grant:r builtin\users:RX /grant:r “NT Authority\Authenticated Users”:RXnet share powerpro=c:\powerpro /grant:Everyone,F

XVR Software PowerPro Manager

On the Active Directory Domain Controller, create a new policy to install the software on managed computers. The policy should assign the software to the computers and be set to uninstall when they fall out of the management scope. The package location should be the UNC path to the .msi setup file (in our example environment, this would be \\FILE01\powerpro\PowerProManagementServiceSetup.msi).

In the new policy, expand Computer Configuration and Software Settings. Create a new package in the Software Installation object.

XVR Software PowerPro Manager

APPENDIX B – SYSINTERNALS PSEXEC BASED DEPLOYMENT

Another method of deploying the PowerPro agent to multiple computers is to utilize the free PSExec utility provided by Microsoft/SysInternals.

First, you will need to download the PSTools (of which, PSExec is a component) from Microsoft. Create a new folder for the utilities (such as C:\Program Files\SysInternals) and extract the utilities here. For your convenience, you may add the folder to your system environment path.

Next, ensure that you have a distribution point for the PowerPro .msi installation file, and that everyone has execute permissions. For details on creating the distribution point, please refer to the PowerPro Configuration Guide.

Next, ensure that the client computers are accessible to PSExec. This includes:

Workstation service is running Server service is running Admin$ share is available Simple file sharing is turned off Network users identify as guests is turned off

Finally, run the utility from a command line as follows (all one line, continued for readability).

psexec \\computername –u domain\user –p password msiexec.exe /i “\\server\share\PowerProManagerServiceSetup.msi” /qn

where

computername is the name of the target computerdomain\user is the domain and user to use when connecting to the target computerpassword is the password of the account specifiedserver\share is the UNC distribution point

Example

To deploy the agent to a computer named WKSLIB02 using the PowerPro .msi file located on the server\share FS01\apps, and using the domain administrator account TESTDOMAIN\administrator with a password of P@ssword1, you would use the following command (again, all one line).

psexec \\wkslib02 –u testdomain\administrator –p P@ssword1 msiexec.exe /i “\\fs01\apps\PowerProManagerServiceSetup.msi” /qn

To deploy to multiple computers, create a text file listing each of the computers (one per line) and specify it as @filename instead of entering a target computer. For example,

psexec @c:\computers.txt –u testdomain\administrator –p P@ssword1 msiexec /i\\fs01\apps\PowerProManagerServiceSetup.msi /qn

XVR Software PowerPro Manager

RSYNC MODULE

WHAT IS THE RSYNC MODULE?

The Rsync Module for PowerPro Manager allows you to move files to a central server using the “rsync” command. Rsync uses the ‘rsync algorithm’ which provides a very fast method of bringing remote files into sync.

The Rsync module can be applied to select groups in which you want to move files automatically for backup, archiving, or other various purposes. The Rsync module will ‘rsync’ or move your files to an rsync server on an automated backup schedule provided by the module.

The amazing part about rsync is that it uses it’s own algorithm to only backup or “rsync” files that have changed. This means that you can create a directory and place files, folders, or programs on a workstation that you want to sync to an external location.

SETUP RSYNC SERVER

Download and install Cwrsync server from here: http://www.powerpromanager.com/downloads/rsync/cwRsyncServer_4.0.5_Installer.exe

Install the Rsync server software on the hardware that you want your rsync server to be on. For this example, we used the same server that PowerPro manager is installed on.

Download Rsync Server and install

Accept all default settings and ‘next’ your way through the menus until rsync server installs

Once Rsync Server has completed installing press “close”

58 | P a g e

Page 59: PowerPro Manager - exceleratesoftware.comexceleratesoftware.com/.../2015/11/PowerPro-Configurat…  · Web view9050-9051:tcp inbound from clients. Communications Diagram. Installation

XVR Software PowerPro Manager

Now rsync Server is installed.

CONFIGURING RSYNC SERVER

To configure Rsync Server we must change the rsyncd.conf found in the installation directory of Rsync Server

Open the location at C:\Program Files\ICW

Find a file called rsyncd.conf

Edit the file by right clicking the file and selecting “edit”. If you do not have the option to edit the file, then open the program with notepad, textpad, or any text editor

In order to get rsync working we must adjust our configuration file. Make your rsyncd.conf look like this:

use chroot = falsestrict modes = falsehosts allow = *log file = rsyncd.logUID = 0GID = 0

# Module definitions# Remember cygwin naming conventions : c:\work becomes /cygwin/c/work#[test]path = /cygdrive/c/workread only = falsetransfer logging = yes

You can change [test] to anything you like. This is your rsync profile. Under the rsync profile, test, the default path used to save files is represented by “path”

Optionally you can change the path to where you want to save files. To avoid complications, it is best to make a folder under c:\ called “work” and all files rsynced to [test] will be saved there.

Rsync uses Cygwin naming structures in order to operate on windows. Just like the configuration file reminds us, /cygdrive/c/work becomes c:\work to rsync.

Before we test our rsync server, we must start the rsync server service.

You can either restart your computer to start the service or enable it manually.

59 | P a g e

Page 60: PowerPro Manager - exceleratesoftware.comexceleratesoftware.com/.../2015/11/PowerPro-Configurat…  · Web view9050-9051:tcp inbound from clients. Communications Diagram. Installation

XVR Software PowerPro Manager

To enable the service manually run services.msc and start the service manually by clicking start on the service.

INSTALL THE RSYNC CLIENT

You can download the Cwrsync client from here: http://www.powerpromanager.com/downloads/rsync/cwRsync_4.0.5_Installer.exe

Download and install Cwrsync. Accept all default setup options and proceed to completion.

Once Cwrsync is installed we can begin testing our rsync server setup. In order to use the Rsync Module it is recommended that you confirm rsync works manually before you automate the process with the module.

First we must make a test backup directory

Create the directory: c:\backup

Place any file that you want backed-up or synced in c:\backup

Open up a command prompt

Within the command prompt, change directory to the installation directory of Cwrsync.

For 32-bit workstations: C:\Program Files\cwRsync\bin

For 64-bit workstations: C:\Program Files (x86)\cwRsync\bin

Assuming that you have placed files in c:\backup we can issue the follow command:

Rsync –rv /cygdrive/c/backup 0.0.0.0::test

Rsync –rv - This starts the program and tells rsync that we want our sync to be recursive (-r) and that we want the output to be verbose (-v)

/cygdrive/c/backup: This is the backup location in the rsync/Cygwin naming scheme. Remember that /cygdrive/c/backup is really c:\backup

0.0.0.0::test - Replace 0.0.0.0 with the IP address to your Rsync server. The ::test portion tells rsync which ‘profile’ to be used which is specified in the rsync configuration file on the Rsync server.

**Note** ::test should be replaced to the profile name you used if you did not use [test] in your rsyncd.conf file.

XVR Software PowerPro Manager

Check to see if the files were sent over to the Rsync server.

Check the location at c:\work on your Rsync server.

If you see a file in your work folder called backup with the files you placed inside of that folder on your workstation then rsync is working.

POWERPRO MANAGER RSYNC MODULE CONFIGURATION

Now that we know syncing files between our workstation and server using Rsync is functioning properly we can move on to the module configuration.

Configuring PowerPro to use the Rsync Module is easy.

Open up the “modify groups” tab from the PowerPro Manager console. First select the group of workstations you want to setup the Rsync Module for. Navigate to the “rsync” tab on the far right.

You should now see the Rsync Module Configuration

XVR Software PowerPro Manager

There are four fields we must enter with information before the Rsync module will function.

Rsync Server Name: 0.0.0.0::testo Replace 0.0.0.0 with your Rsync server IP addresso Replace ::test with the name of your Rsync Profile as found in your rsyncd.conf file if you are not

using the name [test] RSYNC – Folder Name List

o This is where you tell the Rsync Module what locations across your entire group of workstations you would like to backup.

o Remember that Rsync uses a special naming configuration in order to locate files. So “C:\Documents and Settings\Brett\My Documents” becomes “/cygdrive/c/docouments and settings/brett/my documents

Time of day to Rsynco Set the time of that you want your Rsync to run

Enable Rsynco Check Enable Rsync When you are satisfied with the configuration.

Example

In this example, we rsync to an Rsync Server with an IP address of 192.168.125.55 using the rsync profile [test], which was specified earlier in the setup in our rsyncd.conf file pertaining to the server setup. The file locations being backed up are c:\inventory, c:\backup, and “my documents” in both windows xp and windows 7 form.

**NOTE: In order to rsync “my documents” to the rsync server it is recommended that you add both windows XP and windows 7 directory structures to the Folder Name list.

Our Rsync Server is now setup and ready to sync. You can apply individual rsync module configurations to separate groups for optimal functionality.

Once we have entered all the necessary information, configured the Rsync module, and enabled the rsync module, your syncs will start anywhere from 0-5 minutes of the set time.

HOW CAN I TELL IF MY SYNCS ARE WORKING?

Check your backup location on your Rsync Server. Are you files being synced everyday like they should be? You should see all the files that Rsync has synced from the groups in your management configuration.

Every day at the same time you should see a black command prompt window that syncs your files, depending on the location and size of the file, this might be instantaneous for smaller files or it can take hours for files that are several hundred gigabytes.

FOREFRONT MODULE

WHAT IS THE FOREFRONT MODULE?

The Forefront Module is an additional piece of software to PowerPro Manager that provides an easy-to-use interface for easily managing your Microsoft Forefront clients without the need for System Center. A common problem for large enterprise networks with Forefront Endpoint Protection security clients is the complications of managing hundreds or thousands of security clients. From one easy-to-use backend management console you can tell how many computers are infected with viruses, which ones exactly are infected, and even remotely issue a complete scan and removal of all potential security threats that Forefront can pick up. In addition, the Forefront Module is also capable of scheduling virus scans, excluding files; file types, and locations from virus scans all under one computer.

A Black Skull-circle appears on the central management console under ‘client status’ when A Forefront client detects a potential security threat.

The Forefront Module interface closely resembles the style and usability of other PowerPro configuration pages.

FOREFRONT ALERT LEVEL

Whenever Forefront finds a virus or potential threat, the client will report back with an alert level. A forefront client can report four alert levels: low, medium, high, and severe. When an alert level is reached the user is given the option to remove or quarantine the potential threat. The Forefront module allows full alert-level management.

Set forefront clients to take action for a potential security threat or found virus. Automatically take action against viruses found in scans or through heuristics scanning. Configure the module to remove or quarantine a threat at 4 separate alert levels

EXCLUSION MANAGEMENT

During a virus scan it is often helpful to manually omit certain files or locations that would not otherwise be useful in searching for security threats. With the Forefront Module you can mark specific files and locations to be excluded during a virus scan.

INVENTORY MODULE

WHAT IS THE INVENTORY MODULE?

The Inventory module is a feature of PowerPro Manager that allows the user to keep inventory of various different computer-specific hardware, operating systems, and software applications. Every computer that has a PowerPro Manager client installed on it can be tracked in the inventory system. From the Inventory module you can create reports by PowerPro group or by specific computer. You also gain the ability to query searches for specific hardware or software applications across you entire network. The Inventory module can also keep track of smartboards, projectors, and other pieces of hardware that are attached to a computer. Along with the predefined categories that the inventory module comes with by default, manual categories can be created in order to further customize your inventory needs.

The Inventory Module can be turned on under the “modify groups” tab on the side of the main PowerPro Manager interface. Under the “group info” tab of the group management window check the box that reads “Enable clients to send Inventory Information. This option must be enabled on every group that you wish to be inventoried.

QUERY CUSTOM SEARCHES

The Inventory Module allows you to search all inventoried computers for a specific search term. For instance, if you needed information about how many Forefront Endpoint Protection Clients are installed on your network, you could search for the term “forefront”. The inventory Module will return the quantity and what computers the program is installed on. You can also narrow your search results by limiting searches to a specific group or just one computer.

SORT COMPUTERS BY HARDWARE

The Inventory Module enables the user to sort through computers by the hardware contained in the computer. For example, you can sort computers into categories by Motherboard, Network Adapter, amount of RAM, or even by the keyboard that is attached to the computer

ADD MANUAL INVENTORY CATEGORIES

The Inventory Module enables the user to add manual entries to the inventory list. Adding a manual entry creates a new subcategory under the inventory list. This is useful for adding virtually any item you want. With the manual entry option you can keep track of non-computer networked items such as whiteboards, projectors, and smartboards. For example, if you wanted to keep track of a large number of whiteboards across a school campus, you could add the name of the whiteboards and serial numbers. The “add manual entry” option allows the user to generate reports with manually entered fields.
