Chazal say; רש( ) י פרשה זו בהקהל נאמרה, which means all men, women and children had to be gathered and present when Moshe imparted the mitzvohs to them. The Chasam Sofer says that קדושים תהיוwas said בהקהל, to teach that if one thinks that in order to be holy, he must separate himself from people, he is mistaken. The opposite is true. In order to be holy, one should mingle amongst people and be very much a part of society. People think the Chofetz Chaim was a quiet, introverted person, since he wrote so much about shemiras halashon. On the contrary, he was very friendly and talkave. Rabbi Chaim Vital says in his sefer שער קדושהthat middos are not included in the תרי ג מצוותbecause they are הכנות עקריות- fundamental to the mitzvohs. Therefore, Chazal say that מדות רעותare even worse than the עבירותthemselves. The Gemarah says in שבת: דף ק( ) ה; כל הכועס כאילו עובד עבודה זרהממש“- A person who has a temper is considered as if he actually worships avodah zara. It also says מי שיש בו גסות הרוח הוא ככופר בעקר-Someone who is haughty is considered as a denier of הקב ה. According to Rabbi Chaim Vital, the mitz- vohs menoned in parshas Kedoshim, i.e. לא תקם,לא תשנא את אחיך,ואהבת לרעך...are mitzvohs we can draw lessons of middos from. Therefore, they are said בהקהל. As Rashi explains; רוב גופי תורה תלויים בה; fundamental aspects of Torah, not just quantavely, are derived from them. My rebbe, Rav Pam, זצ ל, spoke to us on the yartzeit of his mother about how full of Ahavas Yisrael she was and how careful she was in shemiras halashon. He once shared with us that when his mother heard about the concept of מחסוםלפי, in which people chose certain mes of the day to be extra careful not to speak lashon hora, she was bewildered and said ”How can one say lashon hora if they have Ahavas Yisrael? We all know that the first Beis Hamikdash was destroyed due to ג עברות חמורותand the second one was destroyed due to שנאתחנם. This teaches us that they are equally egregious. The Gemara notes that during the second Beis Hamikdash, the Jews were עוסקin גמילת חסדים, yet it was destroyed due to שנאת חנם. How is this possible? The Manchester Rosh Yeshiva explains that it’s easier to be גומל חסדwhen doing things without another person’s involvement. However, once someone else gets involved in the chessed and has differing opinions as to how to carry it out, then שנאהcan enter the picture. The compeon in the chessed program can cause jealousy and רעותמדות. The עבירהof שנאת חנםcan in some ways be worse than the ג עברות חמורות. In the laer, at least one is aware that it is wrong, whereas when it comes to שנאת חנם, there can be total denial of wrongdoing. The sefer יסוד ושורש העבודהsays that only through both mitzvohs of ואהבת לרעך כמוךand בצדק תשפט עמיתךcan a person achieve a level of קדושה. The path to קדושהis through ואהבת לרעך כמוךand not necessarily by doing extreme forms of עבודה. That is why it was said בהקהל-in front of all of klal Yisrael. In these days of sefirah, as we consider being מתקןourselves in preparaon for קבלת התורה, we have clear direcon from chazal how to go about this process. Let us take this on together with our enre family! YOM HAZIKARON & YOM HA’ATZMAUT Parnes Hayom Learning was dedicated on the following days:

On Wednesday, Yom Hazikaron, Israel Remembrance Day, YBH marked the day by honoring those members of the IDF who have made the

ultimate sacrifice in defense of our land and the unfortunate victims of terror. We lit a yahrzeit candle near the main office in memory of the fallen

soldiers and terror victims. We also commemorated the day with a visit from Rabbi Shmuel Greene, Director of Teen Initiatives at the Partnership for Jewish

Learning in Greater Metro West, a former IDF soldier. He showed a video to grades 5-7 called Under the Helmet, which followed five high school graduates

through their Army training in the IDF. The students in grades 1-4 wrote letters of thanks to soldiers for their service and for risking their

lives to protect Eretz Yisrael by serving in the IDF.

On Thursday, we celebrated Yom Haatzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day. Rebbeim focused part of their day on מצוֹות הּתלּויֹות ּבארץ in connection

with פרׁשת הׁשבּוע. All students were treated to a falafel lunch, courtesy of the PTA. In the afternoon, grades 1-4 boys enjoyed a special program that

focused on the land and places in ארץ ישראל. The 5th-8th grade boys watched and discussed a video describing Israel’s War of Independence in 1948,

called Toldot Am Yisrael; Fighters of 1948.

The eighth grade boys class enjoyed a trip to the lower East Side where they visited the Bais Medrash of R’ Moshe

Feinstein, zt’l, the Bialystoker shul, the 9/11 Memorial and Tower Observatory

and the Museum of Jewish Heritage. The students, their parents and the entire YBH family thank the PTA for

sponsoring this important, exciting and memorable trip.

We encourage YBH families to join us this SUNDAY, MAY 15

at 11:00AM for the Israel Flag Raising at Clifton City Hall

900 CLIFTON AVENUE corner Clifton & Van Houten Ave.

A few weeks ago there was a Palestinian Flag raising at this

same location where hundreds of people showed their support.

It is therefore very important to have a large turnout from our community. Please make the

effort to attend – even for part of the time if need be.

A Peek Into Our Week:

Rabbi Goldberg’s Kitah Alef: We started our second sefer of kriah, called kriah brurah, and we’re learning about the preparation and events of the teiva in parshas Noach and learning all about Shavuos. We have also started a contest to encourage the boys to go to sleep by 8 PM nightly and before Havdalah on Shabbos. Mrs. Rosenzweig's Second Grade Class: B.E.A.R. stands for Be Excited About Reading and we held an exciting reading contest over the last two months. Every time a student completed a book, he wrote the main idea of the story, the title, characters, setting and his favorite part of the book by writing the information in a bear. The goal was to read and write 100 books and we reached our goal, with Gedalia Wisotzky having read 17! books, Asher Kreimerman came in second place with 12 books and Dovi Solomon came in third place, having read 11 books! All the students got beary excited about reading and the class was rewarded with a pizza party on Tuesday.

Rabbi Mendlowitz’s Kitah Beis:

Yaakov Pianko’s grand- father, Dr. Zalman Berger, a renowned scientist, showed the boys a rare phenomenon known as the transit of Mercury, as it passes between Earth and the sun. We were able to see this unusual event that occurs only once every ten or more years through two high powered telescopes he set up in his backyard, where each boy got to see the wonders of Hashem.

Rabbi Hirschman’s Kitah Beis: Rabbi Perlstein farhered the second grade (2B-M) boys on the last two aliyos of parshas Chaya Sara and they celebrated with a siyum on Friday. The class bought two Kids Speak books for the school library with the money they collected in their pushkes. Mrs. Weissmann, School Librarian: The children have been enjoying the beautiful YBH of Passaic school library. We have acquired new books throughout the year to keep up with the interests and requests of the students. Pre-schoolers look forward to visiting the library for story time and perusing the books. Pre1A can't wait until first-grade when they will have a library card and be able to bring books home! The children who are signed up for the birthday club have had the pleasure of choosing new books for the library in honor of their birthdays. I want to extend a big thank you to Zipporah Gasner and Hindy Lifshitz for volunteering to help shelve the books each week. I also want to thank the parents who have donated their used books to the library. The children love seeing more of their favorite series on the book shelves.

ECD HIGHLIGHTS
