The Royal Borough of Kingston is teaming up with local employers to offer young people the chance to develop the necessary skills employers are looking for to secure a brighter future for themselves. If you want to get ahead or you’re just looking for a change of career then there are two ways you could get involved:-

1. Pre-Apprenticeships 2. Work Pairing

Pre-Apprenticeships If you are undecided on the type of job you would like or what route you would like to take to get there, there is the option of a Pre-Apprenticeship – which:

offers you the opportunity to taste different types of job opportunities before progressing to an Apprenticeship enables you to develop the required skills to apply for an Apprenticeship, including technical knowledge and required levels of numeracy and literacy, if needed gives you access to employability skills such as time management, customer service, CV preparation and interview skills provides real work experience to give you the opportunity to learn new skills and gain a greater understanding of the skills needed for different jobs. The Pre-Apprenticeship also covers important work-related knowledge such as health and safety and first aid.

If you are aged 16-18 you can apply for a Pre -Apprenticeship programme at any time during the year. An adviser will interview you and agree an individual training plan with you to identify the skills you need to develop to progress to an Apprenticeship. Pre-Apprenticeships in Kingston include access to Apprenticeships in any of the following sectors:

You will receive support from a dedicated mentor throughout the Pre-Apprenticeship programme and for 26 weeks once in paid employment as an Apprentice. Many young people who started the Pre-Apprenticeship last September have already progressed to an Apprenticeship in finance, business admin, customer service or engineering. Work Pairing If you prefer hands-on working to being in the classroom, you could consider The Royal Borough of Kingston’s Work Pairing programme. There are no formal entry requirements but you will need to show willingness to learn new skills and a genuine interest in working with business and trades people. You will be matched with a small to medium sized employer for a 6 month, 5 day per week work-placement. What you will get from the programme:

Real work experience in a real working environment The opportunity to earn a minimum of £15 per day as a trainee Travel costs paid Work specific equipment/clothing supplied An opportunity to gain qualifications An industry-relevant and academic reference and recommendation for further employment and/or training.

Throughout the work placement you will be supported by a mentor who will also help you to find the most suitable progression route at the end of your 6 month programme. This may be into:

L2 Apprenticeship Full-time employment Full-time further training

At the end of the work placement every trainee will receive an aftercare package with access to local employer information, references and Information, Advice and Guidance.
