Introduction
The Beatles were a highly influential English
rocknroll band from Liverpool. They are the
most critically acclaimed and commerciallysuccessful popular music band in history.
This is the music I grew up with. The main
reason I have chosen this subject as the
theme to my project, is that I was fascinatedby them this whole time.

The formation
In March of 1957, John Lennonformed a group called TheQuarrymen (briefly known asThe Blackjacks).
The Quarrymen went through aprogression of names Johnnyand The Moondogs, Long Johnand The Beatles, The SilverBeetles (derived from Larry
Williams's suggestion "LongJohn and the Silver Beetles"),The Beat Brothers andeventually decided on 17 August1960 on "The Beatles".

Lennon, John (1940-1980),was born into a working-classfamily in Liverpool, England.His parents separated while
he was young, and he wasraised by an aunt. In 1955,while in high school, he joined his first rock-musicgroup. In 1956 he met bassistPaul McCartney. The twocollaborated on songs andformed several bands,including the four-memberband that became known asthe Beatles in 1960.

McCartney, Paul, (1942- ) wasborn into a working-classfamily in Liverpool, England.
Influenced by the music of hisfathers jazz band as a child,the young McCartney beganto play guitar in 1956. Laterthat year he met guitar playerJohn Lennon and joined

In May of 1960, The Beatles were hired to
tour the north-east of Scotland as a back-upband with singer Johnny Gentle, who wassigned to the Larry Parnes agency.
They performed in Hamburg by playing inthe Indra and Kaiserkeller bars six or seven
hours per night.

They went back a second time and played the
Top Ten club for three months (April untilJune, 1961).
Their third trip to Hamburg was when they
opened The Star Club (April, 1962) and werethere for two months.

The activity
The band's first televised performance was on
a program called People and Placestransmitted live from Manchester by GranadaTelevision on 17 October 1962.
Although the band had a huge popularity inthe UK record charts, it was not promoted in
USA.

The activity
But the USA couldntresist too long to theBeatles mania.
In the summer of 1964the band undertooktheir first appearances
outside of Europe andNorth America, touringAustralia and NewZealand.

The activity
On August 15 that year,
The Beatles performedthe first stadiumconcert in the historyof rock, playing at Shea
Stadium in New York toa crowd of 55,600.

The activity
The Beatles performedtheir last concert beforepaying fans atCandlestick Park in SanFrancisco on 29 August1966.
On 25 June 1967, TheBeatles became the firstband globallytransmitted ontelevision, in front of anestimated 400 millionpeople worldwide.

The activity
At the end of 1967, theyreceived their first
major negative presscriticism in the UK with
disparaging reviews of
their surrealistic TV filmMagical Mystery Tour.
Their final liveperformance was onthe rooftop of the Applebuilding in Savile Row,
London on 30 January1969.

The break up and after it
Lennon announced his departure to the rest
of the group in mid-September 1969 but was
talked out of saying anything publicly. McCartney publicly announced the break-up
on 10 April 1970, a week before releasing his
first solo album.
The Beatles' partnership was legally dissolved
after McCartney filed a lawsuit on 31
December 1970.

Following the dissolution of the group, all
four Beatles released solo albums in the early
1970s, including Lennon's JohnLennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970), McCartney's
Ram (1971) and Harrison's All Things Must
Pass (1970).

The Beatles still remain enormously popular.450,000 copies of Anthology 1 were sold on itsfirst day of release, reaching the highest volume
of single-day sales ever for an album. In 2000, a compilation album named 1 was
released, containing almost every number-onesingle released by the band from 1962 to 1970.
The collection sold 3.6 million copies in its firstweek and more than 12 million in three weeksworldwide, becoming the fastest-selling albumof all time and the biggest-selling album of theyear 2000.
